1978 song by Chic
POPULARITY
Unfassbar viele Hits. Die er entweder geschrieben, produziert oder performt hat – oder alles drei zusammen: „Good Times“, „We Are Family“, „Lost in Music“, „Everybody Dance“, „I Want Your Love“ mit seinen Bands Chic und Sister Sledge. „Upside Down“ von Diana Ross, „Let's Dance“ von David Bowie, „Like a Virgin“ von Madonna.
Nile Rogers of Chic Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson This sit-down with my old friend, multiple Grammy Winner, Rock & Roll Hall Inductee, Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist, Nile Rogers, is SOLID GOLD… more like triple platinum. Even though we never exchanged more than a few words in the handful of times he graced my jams back in the day, there was always DHM (deep hidden meaning), as there always is with Nile. This day, we got to that and so much more. STORIES! Oh my lord, No one tells ‘em like Nile. Case in point, his tome, Le Freak, may be the greatest memoir I've read. I could not put the thing down. When was the last time I read a book cover to cover in less than 24 hours? A rare score on Amazon these days, Nile's assured he'll be updating and republishing. It's a MUST-read for music fans, flower children, and anyone who loves to sink their teeth into a great story, well-told. Nile covered his very humble early days, his barely older than him mother, the drugs, the bi-coastal extended family, the moves, the schools, early influences from Coltrane to The Beatles, flute to clarinet to guitar… how Bernard Edwards got him to the Hitmaker Strat and chucking, which has become synonymous with Nile's style. We talked the DHM, the breakdown, the Chic magic as well as the music during and since… producing the top of the top for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran, still winning Grammys and kicking it with Daft Punk, Beyonce, and Cold Play, to name but a few, 750 MILLION albums worth. Say what? We got the sweetest stories about Michael Jackson… a funny with Keith Richards, a Grace Jones impression, and a scary story about Nile's coke psychosis leading to him bottoming out and getting clean and sober. 31 years worth and counting… That Nile was able to do all that he's done, and it's Herculean - aside from the massive number of hits, the films he's scored, the shows he's played, there's the We Are Family Foundation, Chairing the Songwriters Hall of Fame, receiving the 2024 World Economic Forum's Crystal Award for his extraordinary efforts to make the world a more peaceful, equal, and inclusive place… Nile is a humanist, a gentle soul with a heart of platinum like the records that line his walls. I've always admired, respected, and adored Nile. After reading Le Freak, and spending this time with him, I cherish him all the more. What a man, what a man, what a mighty fine man! I can't quite believe we're here - Season 14! And what a way to kick things off because today's guest is nothing short of musical royalty. Nile Rodgers is a man whose music has shaped generations. A Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, he's the genius behind some of the biggest songs in history, think Le Freak, Good Times, and We Are Family. As the co-founder of CHIC, he pioneered the sound of disco and funk, but his influence didn't stop there. From producing Let's Dance for David Bowie to Like a Virgin for Madonna, working with legends like Diana Ross, Duran Duran, and Daft Punk, Nile's fingerprints are all over some of the most iconic records of all time. And that's before we even get to Get Lucky, the global smash hit with Daft Punk and Pharrell that introduced his magic to a whole new generation.Beyond his music, Nile's life is an incredible story of resilience, of reinvention, and creativity. His journey from the streets of New York to the biggest stages in the world is filled with extraordinary moments which he shares with us today. And since we recorded, Nile has had even more reason to celebrate, because at the Grammys, Beyoncé officially made history by winning Country Album of the Year - Nile worked with Beyoncé on the record which we discuss on the episode today, and he's long been an advocate for breaking boundaries in music, so I can only imagine how much joy that moment brought him. We spoke in December at the stunning Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, in a beautiful suite overlooking the rooftops of the city. If you're new to the podcast, this interview is not how my voice typically sounds, I was ill and could barely speak unfortunately, but that didn't get in the way of what I look back on as a magical conversation. C'est Chic is the second studio album by the iconic disco and funk band Chic, released on August 11, 1978. This album solidified Chic's place as a defining force in late 1970s disco music and pop culture. It features some of the most memorable grooves and polished production of the era, created by the legendary duo Nile Rodgers (guitar) and Bernard Edwards (bass). The album is best known for its international hit "Le Freak", a dancefloor anthem with its unforgettable hook ("Ahh, freak out!") and an iconic bassline that became a hallmark of disco. The track was a massive success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining one of the best-selling singles of all time.Another standout on the album is "I Want Your Love," a smooth yet emotionally charged disco ballad featuring lush orchestration and dreamy vocal harmonies. The rest of the album blends elements of funk, soul, and R&B, all wrapped in Chic's signature style of crisp instrumentation, rhythmic precision, and glamorous flair. Tracks like "Savoir Faire" (a jazzy instrumental) and "Happy Man" highlight their versatility and musical sophistication.C'est Chic is often hailed as a quintessential disco record, combining infectious grooves with sophisticated musicality. It remains a testament to Chic's innovation and influence, not just in disco but across genres that followed, including hip-hop and modern dance music.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? (superfly.fm)
There is no contemporary pop music without Nile Rodgers. Born in 1952, Rodgers grew up playing classical music on flute and clarinet before picking up jazz guitar. And at age 20, alongside bass player Bernard Edwards, Rodgers formed the band Chic. They wrote the biggest disco hits of the 70s, like: “Dance Dance Dance,” “Everybody Dance,” “Le Freak," and "Good TImes," which formed the core of Sugarhill Gang's “Rapper's Delight”. In his music career spanning six decades, Rodgers has produced and played on some of the biggest pop songs in history, for artists like Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Madonna, Daft Punk, and Beyoncé. He is also the chair of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, so with the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony taking place this June, we invited him onto Switched on Pop to talk about the making of a great song. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Songwriters Hall of Famer Nile Rodgers is our inaugural guest on the At First Listen podcast! On this episode, Andrew and Diamond dive into Chic's 1978 sophomore album, C'est Chic, with Nile himself as their guide. Nile offers recollections from creating legendary hits like "Le Freak," "I Want Your Love," "Chic Cheer" and others, as well as memories of his close relationship with fellow Chic co-founder and producer late-bassist Bernard Edwards, as well as music icons Jimi Hendrix and Prince.Nile is arguably the most successful record producer in music history, and his fingerprints are all over generations of music from the 1970s to present day. I've got to be real this week and ask some tough questions. I was made for dancing, and when I put on my dancing shoes, do ya think I'm sexy? In the latest of a series of interviews with gamechangers from the worlds of culture, business, sports and politics, Amol Rajan speaks to musician Nile Rodgers. As a songwriter and producer, Rodgers has worked on worldwide hits including David Bowie's Let's Dance, Madonna's Like a Virgin, Sister Sledge's We Are Family and Daft Punk's Get Lucky. Rodgers tells Rajan about his childhood in 1960s New York City, with his mother only 14 years older than him, falling prey to drug addiction as she brought up her young son. Rajan finds out about the circumstances around Rodgers setting up the band Chic with his musical partner Bernard Edwards and the story behind their sensational record, Le Freak. As one of the most successful black men in the music industry, Rodgers reflects on the racism which still troubles America and the structural inequalities that come with music streaming, and he tells Rajan about the death of his mother in 2020.
Back in 1978 was a typical day like another Sunday in Salem where it was fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.? Was that just too much heaven for a blue collar man? When Monday came along, in a strange way, perhaps you felt alive, and were ready to take a chance again. With that double vision now cleared, you left that bottle on the shelf and proceeded straight on back to work. After a time, all that bad blood would recede, and even the French who had labeled you “Le Freak” had a change of heart. This week, ooh baby baby, we travel back through those time passages to have a listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 18th, 1978. To celebrate Accutron's 62nd birthday, a true music icon joins the conversation, the one, and only Nile Rodgers. As the co-founder of CHIC and the Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rodgers pioneered a musical language that generated chart-topping hits like "Le Freak," (the biggest-selling single in the history of Atlantic Records) and sparked the advent of hip-hop with "Good Times." Nile's work in the CHIC Organization and his productions for artists like David Bowie, Diana Ross, and Madonna have sold over 500 million albums and 75 million singles worldwide while his trendsetting collaborations with Daft Punk, Avicii, Keith Urban, Disclosure, Sam Smith and Lady Gaga reflect the vanguard of contemporary music. Join us for a journey into the life of a living legend that has changed the face of music.Episode Highlights6:36 I grew up in an era where the album was the film and the singles were the trailer. You had to make a hit single so people would be interested in listening and purchasing the album. In today's world the consumption of music is the reflection of society, a headline oriented society.14:35 My parents were heroin addicts and I was constantly on the move, I don't remember going to the same school for more than a few weeks. But all schools had standardized music education, they all had school orchestras and each school assigned to me a different instrument I had to learn to play. By the time I grew up I became a self-contained band, doing all my orchestration, writing every part of every instrument myself.26:44 I remember being in Central Park in NYC, watching a moon landing and remember seeing the Bulova logo here. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
Today we are revisiting one of our favorite early episodes of Broken Record with the legendary producer, Nile Rodgers. Over the course of his five decade-long career, Nile Rodgers has performed on, written, and produced some of the greatest dance songs of all time, including Diana Ross's “I'm Coming Out,” Daft Punk's “Get Lucky,” and Madonna's “Like A Virgin.” Back in Fall of 2018, Nile met up with Bruce Headlam at the same New York City recording studio where 35 years earlier, Nile recorded the Let's Dance album with David Bowie. This time around, Nile brought his famed disco funk band Chic to the interview to perform live renditions of their classic hits including, “Le Freak,” “Good Times,” and “Everybody Dance.” So all the music you will hear in today's episode was recorded live, just for us. In between performances, Nile shares exhilarating stories from his life, including how he found salvation as a young jazz guitarist whose teenage mom struggled with heroin addiction. Nile also talks about the night he played old James Brown tunes with Prince and Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood at a small club in London. And he explains what it was like going clubbing with Madonna as her star was starting to explode in the mid-'80s. You can listen to a playlist of some of our favorite songs produced by Nile Rodgers HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Lets go back to a time when The Deer Hunter, two months away from winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards, was number one at the movies, Le Freak and Y.M.C.A. were burning up the radio air waves and gold was at an epic high. But just as big, the Steelers and Cowboys were vying for the Lombardi Trophy and to become the first team to earn three of them. Relive that awesome classic on the Steelers Retro Show. Join host Chris Molanphy as he shares his founding principles for Hit Parade, and counts down your 20 favorite shows. Happy fifth birthday to us! We're finally old enough for kindergarten. Among music legends, Nile Rodgers is truly exceptional. He amplifies his legacy as a multiple GRAMMY-winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist by constantly traversing new musical terrain and successfully expanding the boundaries of popular music. As the co-founder of CHIC , Nile helped to pioneer a musical language that generated chart-topping hits like "Le Freak," (the biggest selling single in the history of Atlantic Records), and sparked the advent of hip-hop with "Good Times". As a writer, producer and musician, Nile has worked with artists as diverse as Diana Ross, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Madonna, Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, Lady Gaga, Daft Punk, and Sister Sledge, whose “We Are Family,” written by Nile and Bernard Edwards, also lends its name to his We Are Family Foundation, an organization which raises funds and awareness in the fight against systemic racism, inequality, inequity, and injustice.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Look at all the freaks! This week our monsters compete to be the main attraction at the Freak Show and Louisianna emerges as a real staple of the season by facing her fears all on one leg. We applaud Dollya’s decision to defend her drag, question Priscilla’s penchant for putdowns that pummel too hard, and analyze Evah’s self-destruction that has been tapping at her all season. Colin tortures Johnny with blueberries, Johnny campaigns for Miss Nelson’s drag persona, and a top three prediction rears its ugly head. Who is in your top three, Mary?
