Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Barbara Kingsolver joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss her support of Higher Ground, a long-term residence for women recovering from addiction. Kingsolver talks about Lee County, Virginia, which is both Higher Ground's location and the setting for her wildly successful novel Demon Copperhead, which transforms Charles Dickens' David Copperfield into a story of the opioid epidemic in Appalachia. Kingsolver explains how she came to use profits from the novel to found Higher Ground, as well as the local partnerships and conversations that made the project possible. She also reflects on Purdue Pharma's exploitation of Appalachia; her views on ethical philanthropy; her worries about what the Big, Beautiful Bill will do to rural America; and her opinions on Vice President J.D. Vance's authenticity. She considers how she developed the voices of her novel's characters, and reads from Demon Copperhead. When life isn't fair, when tragedy strikes, when Shtuff Happens; our response or reaction is our choice. We can either rage or reach out. If you wish to keep your Happy, look for someone to help. If you wish to become something quite the opposite of Happy, then look for someone to blame instead. In this week's episode we talk about the tragedy that happened in Texas with the flooding of the Guadalupe River over the 4th of July weekend this year, only we talk about it from a perspective unfortunately not heard by many. We actually had many options for what we could have titled this episode, but we chose "Shtuff Happens Seek Higher Ground," because when Shtuff Happens, that's the best way to overcome it. What does it look like to Seek Higher Ground? Listen and find out. You'll be Happy you did. The song we used for the intro was "Are You Happy" by Primitive Radio Gods. The ending song was "Make Someone Happy" by Jimmy Durante. We don't own any rights. We would also like to give a special thanks to James Kocian, for the use of his song "More Beautiful". The Higher Ground gravel ride will return to Johnstown on November 2. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council is partnering with race coordinators Dave Pryor and Michael Cook, with support from the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies. This year's event will take riders through some of the most scenic and historic parts of the Laurel Highlands, such as the Path of the Flood Trail (this year's Pennsylvania Trail of the Year), the Conemaugh Valley, and much more. Higher Ground is part of a growing gravel cycling scene in Pennsylvania, which is showcasing the value of public lands and activating rural economies. PEC believes that the more opportunities people have to connect with the outdoors, the more likely they are to protect and steward those places for generations to come.

Past and present blur as Hannah drifts through memories—some real, some imagined. She recalls interviewing Owen for the cook position, the night of the bonfire when he invited her to Paris, and a haunting moment from Rebecca's time at the manor when she caught Peter stealing. But the past holds more than memories. One night, Peter is killed by the mysterious Lady in the Lake and returns as a ghost, discovering he can possess young Miles. When Hannah sees Peter speaking through the boy, it's already too late—Peter forces Miles to push her into the well, killing her. Unaware of her own death, Hannah continues to walk the manor grounds… until Dani's arrival begins to unravel the truth. At the episode's end, the bonfire scene plays again—but this time, we see it for what it truly is: Hannah's final goodbye.
