In the wake of 2020's racial reckoning, DEI initiatives surged across the country, from corporations to the classroom. But that momentum has taken a big hit in recent months under a new presidential administration as evidenced by federal funding cuts, restructured priorities and arguably a growing political backlash against DEI policies. So what's been learned? And what's next? Chandra Thomas Whitfield hosted a panel discussion at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library as part of Juneteenth. She was joined by retired senior Denver County Court judge Gary Jackson, community advocate and "actionist" Candice Bailey, Boulder author Rosalind Wiseman, and recent CSU graduate and budding documentarian Jevon "JJ" McKinney.
“Adolescence isn't the end of your close relationship with your child, it's the beginning of the best one you've ever had.”For so many parents, the teenage years loom like a storm cloud, fraught with anxiety, conflict, and the fear of losing connection. But what if everything you think you know about adolescence is dead wrong? What if it's not a time to dread or simply get through, but an invitation to lifelong closeness and understanding with your kids?In this episode we sit down with Megan Saxelby, founder of Wild Feelings, veteran educator, and reformed “middle school monster” on a mission to radically reframe how we all understand and approach adolescence. Drawing from 17 years in middle school classrooms and her pioneering work in dignity-based conflict resolution, Megan shares how these pivotal years can unlock the best, most meaningful relationships we'll ever have with our kids. We discuss:Why the “doom and gloom” narrative about teens does everyone (kids and adults alike!) a massive disservice, and what actually happens when we expect more from themThe powerful science behind adolescent brain development (hint: ages 11–17 are just as crucial as birth to five—and why we need to stop checking out right when it matters most)How dignity-based conflict resolution can transform peer relationships, empower young people to speak up, and bring empathy and accountability into every hard conversationThe number one thing teens want: to truly MATTER, to belong, and to have agency—along with simple, actionable shifts you can use to support them (no matter whose kid they are)Real talk about parenting through change: whether that's divorce, growing up, or just learning how to be your child's anchor, not their peerPractical ways to help teens (and yourself) meet the chaos of growing up, especially in a world that makes belonging and inclusion feel more urgent (and more fraught) than everOUR GUEST: Megan Saxelby is on a mission to reframe adolescence as a time of growth and connection—not chaos. A veteran educator and founder of Wild Feelings, she brings 17 years of classroom experience and cutting-edge research to her work with parents. Megan has collaborated with thought leaders like Rosalind Wiseman and Dr. Donna Hicks, and helped develop core curriculum for #halfthestory, a leading digital wellness nonprofit. Through Wild Feelings, she offers practical, evidence-based tools that help parents navigate the teen years with confidence and compassion.Want more Megan? Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, is a cult classic teen comedy based on Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The film humorously yet accurately portrays the harsh realities of high school social dynamics, focusing on cliques, peer pressure, and the impact of popularity on self-identity. The story follows Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl navigating the cutthroat social hierarchy of public high school life after moving from Africa. As she infiltrates "The Plastics," the school's most popular clique, Cady faces a moral dilemma that tests her values, self-image, and relationships. Though often comedic, the movie sheds light on serious issues like bullying, conformity, and the challenges of adolescence. In this episode, Kevin Stoller, Nancy Shapiro Rapport, and Steven Shapiro discuss the movie through the lens of parenting and education. They explore the challenges faced by kids and parents in today's society, particularly focusing on the mental health crisis and the breakdown of family structures. The conversation delves into character analyses, the impact of school environments, and the importance of emotional health in raising children. Takeaways: Consistent, intentional conversations about values and behavior are essential for raising resilient, emotionally healthy children. Small, deliberate actions can lead to significant, long-term results. A strong family culture, built on open communication and shared values, can help children navigate social pressures and define their identity. Parents need to engage in ongoing discussions about kindness, respect, and self-worth. Technology has fundamentally changed how teens communicate and form relationships. Setting boundaries around device use and fostering in-person connections can help counteract the isolating effects of screen time. Adolescence is a time of self-discovery, and social interactions can be intense and confusing. Understanding the pressures teens face helps parents provide better support. Schools can support parents by reinforcing positive behaviors and values, while communities can provide a support network for parents navigating the challenges of raising children. Comedy can be an effective way to connect with teens, understand their world, and initiate meaningful conversations. Movies like Mean Girls use humor to highlight real issues in adolescence. About Steven Shapiro: Steven Shapiro is a veteran school reimaginer, with over 30 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience, 15 concurrent years as a high school humanities program director, and four years as a district leader of experiential learning. YES. FINE. MY SISTER WROTE A FUCKING HORRIBLE BOOK EXPOSING ALL MY SECRETS ABOUT HOW I WAS ABLE TO MANIPULATE AND CONTROL PEOPLE IN MIDDLE AND HIGHSCHOOL - FINE. But i didn't want to take responsibility for the narrative that Tina Fey made me into and I refused to look at my behavior because it was what i need to do to surivive in the fanciest school - with peiple who worshiped money and power and I felt like i had no money and power because my father lost all our money when i was little and then my mom had to leave me so she could save our house and keep me in the trappings of private education and my sister had to go to college to learn how to survive and I was left alone and I was terrified and lonely and had no access to the money that everyone else had so in order to not literally want to kill myself i learned like a evil computer how to be the loudest person in the room so in case they ever found out my shame I could silence them with a look. I have spent my life trying to be different and quell the regina that i made in my head and only look out for people who champion light and have truama so i could sit with them and let them know that their story matteried to me and i think it was because i felt undeserving of my mother still loving me and no displin8ng me and letting me run rampant and terrorize unsupervised and always holding my hand no matter what. I learned alot abut my past when i did acid in the woods surrounded by my family and acid showed me the truth about the sexual trauma I had experienced and domination from men i had endured and why i canm't remember anything and i live only in the now because the shame of how i had to live and how unahppy i was afraid it made my family was to much to bear and still show my sahme publically because i htught eventually they would leave me and i would lose the only thing i had my sister and mother. I am sorry. I am ready to sit quiter and learn new skills so i can continue to do the light i was born to do and kill the inner critic that i created to make sure i could cntrol my own narrative but it's over. Shes dead for me. Inclusivity is in, cliques are out. SO GET IN THE UNIVERSAL MAGIC SCHOOL BUS LOSERS - ITS TIME TO HEAL.

We examine the harms minors face online — from how tech companies profit off addictive usership, to the consequences of social media on kids' mental health and emotional development — and we explore some new proposals for how to protect their privacy. Are more parental controls the answer? Will newly-proposed laws be the key? Or will these bills cause more harm than good? Cady starts hanging out with the Plastics, a clique of popular, stuck-up girls. The group consists of Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), and leader Regina George (Rachel McAdams). Cady agrees to help her friend Janis (Lizzy Caplan) get revenge on Regina so Cady can go out with Regina's boyfriend Aaron (Jonathan Bennett). Other characters include Janis and Cady's friend Damian (Daniel Franzese), math teacher Ms. Norbury (Tina Fey), principal Mr. Duvall (Tim Meadows), and Mrs. George (Amy Poehler). Upon release, Mean Girls garnered praise for its humor and cast. It grossed $130 million on a budget of only $17 million. It went on to become a cultural phenomenon, generating catchphrases, fads, and homages. It also led to a made-for-TV sequel and Broadway musical which got its own film adaptation. Aaron, Josh, and Stefan talk about their histories with Mean Girls before going into the plot, performances, and humor. They also discuss its legacy and the possibility of a proper sequel. For more comedies, you can listen to Aaron and Josh's retrospective on Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. In which the Monsters join me in reviewing MEAN GIRLS (2024), from writers Tina Fey and Rosalind Wiseman, the film is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. In a movie that's based on a musical that's based on a far better movie a home-schooled girl finds herself thrust into the dog eat dog world of public high school where she must navigate the perils of staying true to herself or succumbing to the superficial lure of popularity. The film clocks in at 1 h and 52 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Do you prefer to have a male or female boss? Have you ever thought about why? A UCLA study analyzed responses from more than 60,000 people and found that women, even those who were managers themselves, were more likely to want a male boss than a female one. The participants explained that female bosses are “emotional,” “catty,” or “bitchy.” If we want more women in positions of power, we need this narrative to change. It's so important that women respect their female colleagues and appreciate working for women in power. Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes, the inspiration for the Mean Girls franchise, hears from countless women that their workplace is like high school, and existing in that environment every day can be tough, if not impossible. Thankfully, Wiseman has excellent advice for finding allies in the workplace and handling conflict with your colleagues (yes, even when it's super uncomfortable). In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who's wondering if she should be the co-owner of a property she's buying for a granddaughter, and we check in with someone who is considering taking a job at a company with terrible reviews… Should she bring this up in an interview? For episode two of two of our bonus Mean Girls content, we've got Rosalind Wiseman on the show today, whose 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World was the basis for Tina Fey's screenplay for the original 2004 Mean Girls film. This book—which is currently undergoing its third revision—is the go-to manual for being a teenage girl and raising a teenage girl. This isn't Rosalind's only book—she has written nine and has multiple New York Times bestsellers—but it's likely her most well-known book, and Rosalind is a subject matter expert when it comes to girls and the complex social issues they face, like cliques, gossip, bullying, self-image, social hierarchy, and (of course) boys. On Tuesdays we wear pink! After many years of missing Oct 3, Brenna and Joe *finally* cover Mark Waters 2004's film Mean Girls and its source material, Rosalind Wiseman's parenting guide, Queen Bees & Wannabes. We've got some pretty major problems with Wiseman's 400 page tome, which relies heavily on gender binaries, barely addresses queer or racialized teens, and seems to hate girlhood?Thankfully the film is highly enjoyable. Despite being very white and featuring very 2000s language, these performances and jokes have stood the test of time. We're still trying to make fetch happen!Wanna connect with the show? My brilliant, beautiful daughter Avery is turning 22. I'm so proud of the woman she's become, and the relationship we've built. I'm celebrating her by opening up about all the ways I screwed up raising her. Avery grew up as the younger sibling of a strong-willed older brother, so she experienced it all. But we've proven that being human and making mistakes doesn't have to drive a wedge between mother and daughter. In this episode, you'll learn: How honesty and humility about your mistakes can help you build a close, resilient relationship with your kids, from childhood through adulthood. That it's possible to break cycles of trauma and mistreatment even if you're not a perfect parent. How the relationships you had - or wanted to have - with your parents inform the relationships you have with your kids. And much more! As always, thanks for listening. HERE IS NEW YORK by E.B. White / QUEEN BEES & WANNABES by Rosalind Wiseman This takes the cake for oddest book pairing ever on our show! First, Toby reviews 1948 travelogue HERE IS NEW YORK and finds similarities between author E.B. White and Grampa Simpson. Then, Bailey offers far too many quotes from MEAN GIRLS as she covers the movie's source material, 2002 parenting manual QUEEN BEES & WANNABES: HELPING YOUR DAUGHTER SURVIVE CLIQUES, GOSSIP, BOYFRIENDS, AND OTHER REALITIES OF ADOLESCENCE by educator Rosalind Wiseman. Will they make "fetch" happen and find common ground between the two books?! Plus, the hosts share their latest bookworm problems, practice their spelling, and question Dillon's role on the podcast.
Talking about race and racism isn't easy. There are a lot of questions that we may not know how to answer while in the moment and many situations that we may not know how to handle when we are in them. We also may be confused about how to raise children who are true allies and who are willing to step up, have tough conversations themselves and not just do what's right in the moment but also what could be helpful in the long run as we strive for lifelong relationships and lifechanging opportunities for growth. How do we ensure we do better and embrace a willingness to engage in courageous discomfort as we dive into our questions about race and racism? For this, we have 2 amazing women on today, Shanterra McBride and Rosalind Wiseman. On this week's episode of Currently Reading, Meredith and Kaytee are discussing: Bookish Moments: DNF progress and a new way of enjoying a book Current Reads: five books we're excited to talk about and one that might cause some clutched pearls Deep Dive: the books we know are terrible but are our secret pleasures The Fountain: we visit our perfect fountain to make wishes over our reading lives As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you'd like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don't scroll down! New: we are now including transcripts of the episode (this link only works on the main site). These are generated by AI, so they may not be perfectly accurate, but we want to increase accessibility for our fans! *Please note that all book titles linked below are Bookshop affiliate links. Your cost is the same, but a small portion of your purchase will come back to us to help offset the costs of the show. If you'd prefer to shop on Amazon, you can still do so here through our main storefront. Anything you buy there (even your laundry detergent, if you recently got obsessed with switching up your laundry game) kicks a small amount back to us.
