Just in time for Halloween, we're hosting a virtual hauntology reading group (specifically, hauntology the music genre) at 4pm ET next Thursday, October 30. If you want to join in, sign up for a paid subscription, or toss a few bucks into our haunted tip jar, and we'll send you the readings and a link to log into the conversation. We hope it'll be the first of more group reading sessions to come.We spend a lot of time here talking about the structural forces that turned pop culture into an endless churn of sequels, remakes, and nostalgia plays. But what if the blame for our current “creative recession” lies on more than just economics or platforms? What if our cultural values themselves have shifted in ways that make true innovation harder to sustain? That's the focus of Blank Space: A Cultural History of the Twenty-First Century, the forthcoming book from Tokyo-based culture critic W. David Marx—and probably the first major exhaustive account of the last 25 years in music, film/TV, internet culture, and fashion. He doesn't just look at the technological, political, and economic forces that that created a winner-take-all landscape where billionaires and centi-millionaires like Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Paris Hilton, MrBeast, Jay-Z and frankly Donald Trump took up all of the cultural oxygen in the room, making it harder and harder for the next generation of innovators to break through. He zeroes in on the cultural attitudes that have led us here—and that set us apart from our 20th-century forebears—including poptimism, the valorization of entrepreneurial heroism, cultural omnivorism, and more.In addition to Blank Space, David the author of the mega-influential books Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change and Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style. He joins us to talk about the mind-boggling task of summing up the past quarter-century of culture, and why most of the coolest, most innovative outputs ended up getting pushed to the margins. We also get into what originality means in a climate of constant churn, and why he believes that fighting for it is still important, even in a postmodern landscape where “everything has already been done.”Finally, David makes the case that building a healthier cultural ecosystem starts with changing our cultural attitudes. That means embracing and reinforcing social norms that have fallen to the wayside in the past quarter century, like normalizing giving credit to smaller artists, learning the canon so we can break it, and yes, making it lame to sell out again.Pre-order Blank Space, which is out November 18 via Penguin Random House. This is an emergency broadcast from the EIC newsroom, on the third of October 2025 Taylor Swift released her twelfth studio album, The Life Of A Show Girl. Here at EIC headquarters we had been warming to Taylor after a collective indifference, but it seems we may have potentially picked a bad time to enSwifticate ourselves. TLOAS tracks were leaked just before release, and immediately, the drama began. The album was recorded in Sweden with the producers Max Martin and Shellback, who she made "22," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," "Blank Space," "Style," "Shake It Off," "…Ready For It?" and "Delicate."with, mostly during the European leg of the Eras Tour in 2024.The album consists of 12 tracks, with one featuring Sabrina Carpenter. It sold 2.7 million copies in traditional album sales — which include physical and digital formats — in its first day in the U.S. That's according to Luminate, an industry data and analytics company, breaking her previous record for most first week sales with TTPD.In the now infamous episode of her American Football playing fiance's podcast, Taylor described the album as “What was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant. It just comes from like the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life.“And so that effervescence has come through on this record' she said ‘that the goal of the album was “melodies that were so infectious that you're almost angry at it” and also lyrics that “are as vivid, crisp, focused, and completely intentional.”‘This is the record I've been wanting to make for a very long time. Every single song is on this album for hundreds of reasons … It's just right.” she said.Controversy started with Actually Romantic, which is rumoured to be about Charli xcx, but that isn't her only eyebrow raiser. Some are upset at the highly sexualised nature of tracks like ‘wood', some are critcising her for releasing multiple variants with bonus tracks, or different recordings, to appeal to collectors and boost album sales by counting each variant as a separate purchase; some of the promo videos that used QR codes or other interactive elements were flagged by people online as possibly being made partly with generative AI, which has caused a stir not least because Swift has been vocal about artists needing control of their work and masters, but also because of the awful instance when people made a deepfake of her. However that is unconfirmed. What is confirmed is that for the first time potentially in Swift's career, it's her own fans saying they don't like the album, or are disappointed. We try to see the wood from the trees... see what we did there ;)Thanks so much for all of your takes on this topic, we appreciate you all! HEAVY Music Interviews
A Force Of Nature With ERIC VANLERBERGHE From I PREVAIL

HEAVY Music Interviews

I Prevail swept into town like a rampaging force of nature with their debut album Lifelines in 2016. It was an album that screamed defiance from every note, emphatically heralding the arrival of I Prevail onto a musical landscape that was destined to be changed forever. While bands had previously flirted with fusions of post hardcore, metalcore, pop punk, hard rock, nu metal, electronics and hip hop, none had managed to find a completely happy medium, choosing more fleeting moments of amalgamation rather than combining all of the genres under one banner. But here was a band who seemingly found the perfect balance on their first offering.Prior to this, I Prevail had endeared themselves to the crossover metal community with a heavy take on Taylor Swift's Blank Space, but that proved to be merely an appetiser for the sonic feast that was to come.Despite attaining gold status over their first two albums as well as Grammy nominations previously unheard of for music of their preference, I Prevail refused to stick to what was already a winning formula, pushing themselves and their boundaries more and more with each release. Where many would find comfort, I Prevail found challenges, all of which have come together to form the nucleus of the band's fourth album, Violent Nature, which was released worldwide last week. It is an album of triumph over adversity, light where there should have been dark, and a defiant enthusiasm and hunger for personal musical fulfilment, which a betting man would say is still a long way from being satiated for this ever-evolving band.HEAVY caught up with frontman Eric Vanlerberghe recently to discuss Violent Nature and how it represents I Prevail at this current point of their career. We start by asking how the early reception has been for the album."It's been incredible," he replied. "Just seeing the love on it and playing some of these new songs live. We played one of the songs before the record came out, and people were just jumping. It felt great. It's good to finally have it out."We mention a quote from the press release that says I Prevail have taken things to the next level with Violent Nature and ask if he agrees."Yeah," he measured after a brief pause. "I think that's a fair assessment (laughs). Just like every record in the past, we always look back and go Okay, what can we do better? What can we improve, and how can we cut the fat? With the heavier stuff, I feel like we've gotten and created different ways to get heavier, and when it comes back to writing the hooks and choruses, we spent a lot of time to make sure we loved every single one of them. Each one felt like a 10 out of 10 before it went out the door. After 11 years of writing, I think we're just starting to get it (laughs)."In the full interview, Eric dives deeper into Violent Nature from a musical point of view, highlighting the opening track Synthetic Soul and how it came together. We discuss the recording process that was split in two parts and how that impacted the finished result, as well as this being the first time that I Prevail have actually recorded an album in a proper studio as opposed to more DIY methods. We talk about Eric taking on clean vocals for the album to go with his usual harsh singing, and how difficult the transition into the dual roles was. He told us about the variations writing for clean vocals had during the creative process, and how the band ironed out any bumps as they occurred. Talk also turned to the eclectic blending of genres and how I Prevail find their balance in the creative process, plus Eric discussed last year's Australian tour with Parkway Drive, and just when I Prevail might be planning their own run of shows and plenty more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Known for her autobiographical songwriting, artistic reinventions, and cultural impact, Swift is the highest-grossing live music artist, the wealthiest female musician, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.Swift signed with Big Machine Records in 2005 and debuted as a country singer with the albums Taylor Swift (2006) and Fearless (2008). The singles "Teardrops on My Guitar", "Love Story", and "You Belong with Me" found crossover success on country and pop radio formats. Speak Now (2010) expanded her country pop sound with rock influences, and Red (2012) featured a pop-friendly production. She recalibrated her artistic identity from country to pop with the synth-pop album 1989 (2014) and the hip-hop-imbued Reputation (2017). Through the 2010s, she accumulated the Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", "Shake It Off", "Blank Space", "Bad Blood", and "Look What You Made Me Do".After Swift signed with Republic Records in 2018, she re-recorded four of her Big Machine albums due to a dispute with the label, which prompted an industry discourse on artists' rights. She released the eclectic pop album Lover (2019), the indie folk albums Folklore and Evermore (both 2020), the electropop record Midnights (2022), and the double album The Tortured Poets Department (2024). Her Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles in the 2020s are "Cardigan", "Willow", "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)", "Anti-Hero", "Cruel Summer", "Is It Over Now?", and "Fortnight". Her Eras Tour (2023–2024) is the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Its accompanying concert film, The Eras Tour (2023), became the highest-grossing in history.Swift is the only artist to have been named the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year five times. A record seven of her albums have each sold over a million copies first-week in the US. Publications such as Rolling Stone and Billboard have ranked her among the greatest artists of all time. She is the first individual from the arts to be named Time Person of the Year (2023). Her accolades include 14 Grammy Awards—including a record four Album of the Year wins—and a Primetime Emmy Award. In this podcast episode about a podcast episode, Kate obsesses over a 30-something woman and her boyfriend existing and being normal, which surprisingly turned out to be the best entertainment of all. She recaps Taylor Swift's unprecedented appearance on New Heights, where we learned about TS12: The Life of a Showgirl, coming October 3rd. She breaks down her personal interview highlights, from SAT vocab words to otters to human exclamation marks and having fun. It's official — Cindy Allen is flying solo! In this debut episode of Simply Trade: Cindy's Version, the internationally respected trade expert (often dubbed the “Taylor Swift of Trade”) dives headfirst into the latest tariff actions, geopolitical shake-ups, and economic indicators that every global trader needs to know. Cindy brings you real-time insights, straight talk, and a dose of personality that only she can deliver — all wrapped in a fast, focused 20-minute briefing. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Breaking Down the New Reciprocal Tariffs: Who's hit and why (Canada, Brazil, China, and more) The Real Impact on U.S. Companies: From Ford's $800M hit to disappearing profit margins How Price Hikes and Uncertainty Are Shaking Economic Forecasts Domestic Manufacturing & Supply Chain Shifts: Is reshoring happening or just diversifying? The End of De Minimis?: What the August 29 Executive Order means for importers, brokers, and CBP Copper 232 Duties: Why the carve-outs matter for U.S. manufacturers CBP Organizational Changes: What's happening inside the Office of Field Operations and Office of Trade Key Takeaways: More than half of U.S.-based companies affected by trade have cut or withdrawn guidance due to volatility. Fentanyl-related tariffs raise questions about the effectiveness of politically motivated trade actions. The end of Type 86 entries will transform how low-value shipments are processed — major change ahead. Companies are not necessarily reshoring — many are seeking alternative low-tariff markets instead. A sharp uptick in consumer pricing may be felt in late summer as new tariffs take hold. We kick off episode four with a new segment spotlighting the concert photographers who work regularly at Pine Knob, and their work. Our first comes from Ken Settle, recalling when Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were joined by a special appearance from former drummer Charlie Martin, who had been paralyzed from the waist down after an automobile accident in 1977. I Prevail was formed in Oakland County, Michigan during 2013 and made its first splash with a remake of Taylor Swift's Blank Space that became a viral hit in 2014. The quintet co-headlines the Summer of Loud 2025 package on Wednesday, July 16 at Pine Knob. Things stay heavy the next night -- Thursday, July 17 -- when Pantera and Amon Amarth will be rocking Pine Knob. This is Pantera's first headline show in the metro area since 2001, and its first Pine Knob appearance since OZZFest during July of 2000. Wrapping things up, Styx will not perform at Pine Knob until August 16. But on Friday, July 18 the veteran group releases its 18th studio album, Circling From Above -- the follow-up to Crash of the Crown in 2021 and Styx's third album in eight years after taking a 12-year break from recording.
