On this Thanksgiving-week episode of Spellbreakers, Matt Trump dives into the true early life of George Washington, using the upcoming film Young Washington as a launching point for a deep historical journey. After opening with holiday reflections, parade observations, and shifting cultural symbolism, Matt explores the origins of Thanksgiving through Washington's own proclamations before moving into a sweeping lesson on colonial America. He traces Washington's family roots along the Potomac, the rise of Virginia's planter class, the formation of the Ohio Company, and Washington's three expeditions into the Ohio Country that helped ignite the French and Indian War. Through maps, anecdotes, and vivid descriptions of Washington's encounters with the French, the Iroquois, and the brutal frontier, Matt unpacks how a 21-year-old Washington—ambitious, flawed, and untested—played a direct role in sparking a global conflict. He follows this thread to the fall of Fort Necessity, Braddock's disastrous campaign, Washington's improbable survival, and the eventual British victory that set the stage for the Revolution. Blending humor, personal stories, and meticulous research, Matt brings to life the young man who would become America's founding giant.

Back in North America, General Jeffrey Amherst attempted to rack up more British victories against the tenacious French forces. Would he succeed? The Young Frontiersman Series follows Barnabus Locke as he lives through a formative period in America. The son of a fur trader, Locke's odyssey from the Revolutionary Period through the time of the Louisiana Purchase. The volumes of his adventures, "Fidelity," "Allegiance," and "Alliance" are now joined by the latest in the series, "Identity." All come from the pen of Matthew Blaine and available through Milford House Press. Inspired by the works of Ernest Hemingway, Jack London, Louis L'Amour, and John Steinbeck, Blaine tells of his varied life: a steelworker, factory floor assembler, carpenter, and cab driver, he also managed trade shows across the East Coast. His interests included primitive archery, hiking, and canoeing. During the pandemic, Blaine wrote two self-published memoirs of his life. All of this spurred him to create Barnabus Locke, and live history through times of change in the colonies, the Spanish/French conflict over the Louisiana Territory, and the Ohio Country, which has its roots in Western Pennsylvania. Retired, Matthew Blaine lives in rural Pennsylvania. When not writing, he works in a shop in the woods, practicing the skills required for leather working, shaping and fletching primitive arrows and marrying old ax heads with newly fashioned handles.

As the British and French colonies in North America expanded in the middle of the 18th century, they inevitably clashed. Fighting between the two sides and their respective Native American allies began in Ohio Country (now western Pennsylvania) in 1754. Dan Snow tells Don how the fighting began in 1754 in Ohio country (now western Pennsylvania) and spread, over almost a decade, across the disputed territory in the Great Lakes region and into New France (modern-day Canada). As a result of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the war, France's presence in North America was all but ended. They were left only with the small islands of St Pierre and Miquelon, off Newfoundland.Produced by Benjie Guy. Mixed by Aidan Lonergan.
