The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 7th study session on Sue Klebold's A Mothers' Reckoning. Published nearly 20 years after the notorious 1999 Columbine High School massacre, where 13 people were killed, Mrs. Klebold is the White mother of Dylan Klebold - one of the cowardly White killers. After spending years in silence, Klebold stepped center stage to share her anguish over losing her child and her perspective on her child's attempt to slaughter hundreds of his classmates while disintegrating the high school. Denver Public Radio reports the book has generated over $400,000 for numerous mental health groups. They have no evidence of payments to Mrs. Klebold. Last week, Sue began detailing Dylan's turbulent junior year at Columbine. He and Eric were arrested, and Sue suggests they took the episode seriously. They allegedly reduced the boys contact with each other for a period after chatting with the Harrises. Sue even makes time to address the diversion form where it states that her older son Byron was booted from the house for narcotics. In the memoir she says this was a mutually agreed upon decision without rancor. She continues to heap all the blame on Eric - following the trend of labeling him a psychopath, while insisting Dylan was a sad victim of peer pressure and bullying. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 7th study session on Dave Cullen's COLUMBINE. On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 people and injured 24 more at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. This week, we continue our exploration of Cullen's narrative of the events leading up to the massacre, the motivations of the White killers, and the aftermath of the slaughter. The teen duo apparently had contact with enforcement officers well in advance of the shooting. Last week, we learned more about the tandems' arrest for stealing from vehicle in advance of the massacre. The boys were suspended from school hacking to school computers to break into students lockers. Wayne Harris found one of his son's pipe bombs, and was allegedly stymied about how to dispose of the device. Dylan Klebold's journal has strong homoerotic tones when taking about intense bond to Zack. In fact, Dylan dreams about killing Zack's White girlfriend for breaking up their "threesome." Harris and Klebold's parents remained dedicated to their code and said next to nothing to police. "Myth 1. Black Nonbelievers Don't Exist The general population is well aware of the existence of atheists by now. Dawkins, Harris, and other prominent white atheists have made sure of that. But black atheists make up less than 0.5% of the black population in the US and a very small proportion of the atheist population. Though logic dictates that black nonbelievers must exist, their small numbers and lack of visibility contribute to their erasure. Why does this matter? Because perpetuating the myth that black people are inherently theistic ignores the diversity of thought that actually exists within the black community. It contributes to the stereotyping of black culture as monolithic, even amongst black people who (should) know better. Furthermore, when people don't consider the possibility of black nonbelievers existing, it can affect their relationships with the non-religious people in their lives. Think of theists offering prayers to nonbelievers with sick family members, or comforting grieving nonbelievers by talking about the afterlife, or encouraging an agnostic cousin to say grace at dinner, or telling a strident atheist they'll “come around eventually.” These are just a few examples of the ways that nonbelievers in general are invalidated, annoyed, and silenced by well meaning people. The smaller number of nonbelievers in the black community heightens their erasure in particular. Black nonbelievers often encounter the assumption that because they are black, religion and spirituality should be especially important to them. And when this assumption is coming from other black people who are themselves religious, it can feel like a denial of cultural identity to express one's nonbelief. Recognizing and affirming the existence of black nonbelievers isn't just about making them more comfortable. If members of the black community strive to recognize and understand people with different views of the world, they can more thoughtfully approach and get along with the people in their lives with whom they disagree. Myth 2. Black Nonbelievers Haven't Been Active in Social Justice A lot of prominent freethinkers, humanists, and atheists seem more concerned with denouncing religion than solving issues of structural inequality and systematic injustice. This contributes to the myth that nonbelievers are unconcerned with social justice, or are less concerned with doing good in the world than religious people. There have been a number of skeptics, mostly older white men, who have made the case for abandoning religion in the modern age. But for all the Dawkins, Hitchens, and Harrises in the atheist world, there aren't as many skeptics focused on feminism, racial justice, and other sociopolitical issues that would exist with or without religion. Alongside the myth of the apathetic nonbeliever are even greater myths about religion's role in black culture. Religion can be wielded as both the weapon of the oppressor and the shield of the oppressed. For example, during the Transatlantic slave trade, white captors used passages of the Bible to justify the enslavement of Africans and demand their subjugation. Veteran rapper T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris have denied the most recent round of allegations from Sabrina Peterson, who previously accused the rapper of holding a gun to her head. The latest round of allegations are in a series of screenshots of DMs from several women accusing the rapper and his wife of disturbing incidents of sexual abuse and other transgressions allegedly from more than a dozen women. The accounts claim that the women were forced to take drugs and “pressured for sex.” In a statement first posted on Complex, a spokesperson for the rapper and Tiny called the claims “egregiously appalling” and claims the couple have been having “difficulty” with Peterson for more than a decade. The statement reads: “Mr. and Mrs. Harris want to be on record and more importantly want the public to know they emphatically deny in the strongest way possible the egregiously appalling allegations being made against them by Sabrina Peterson. The Harrises have had difficulty with this woman for well over a decade. They are taking this matter very seriously.” Along with their long-running musical careers, the pair starred in the VH1 reality series “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle” for six seasons, beginning in 2011. Tiny aggressively denied the gun claim from Peterson earlier this week, responding in a comment on the Shade Room: “Hold up… So you want your abuser to train your sons? He was just uncle 2 years ago Now when did you say my husband assaulted you? Did you change your mind or change it back? What wit you today Pooh? I'm confused,” Tiny wrote in a comment on The Shade Room. “Stop Harassing My Family. You strange. Everybody know you been special (face slicing seminar lady). Please get help but LEAVE US ALONE.”

In this episode, Emma Park speaks with Lee and Lizanne Harris about their experience of the collective worship requirement in schools. The Harrises recently initiated judicial review proceedings against the primary school attended by their children. They challenged its decision to provide no alternative to a proselytising Christian assembly once a week conducted by representatives of the local C of E church. Lee and Lizanne discuss their children’s experiences of these assemblies, what happened when they withdrew them, and the school’s failure to provide a secular alternative until they were forced to by the threat of legal proceedings. The Harrises’ case may encourage other parents to speak up about concerns that their children will be indoctrinated if they participate in religious assemblies, and excluded from school life if they do not.
