As this is being written the firestorm in California is continuing. It is not only government that responds to disasters and the needs of disaster survivors and victims. The Disaster Accountability Project was created to help coordinate nongovernmental organizational efforts. To date, the site has more than 900 organizations registered worldwide. Following a stringent review process, organizations are presented with information that displays proximity to a specific crisis, and the range of services provided to survivors, and a detailed but easy-to-digest overview of the organization's financial health – which gives an indication of the percentage of aid that will be directly passed on to survivors. You can find all the details at www.smartresponse.org The podcast guest is Ben Smilowitz, ben@disasteraccountabilityproject.org He witnessed the bungled Hurricane Katrina response while managing a high-volume Red Cross Client Service Center in Gulfport, MS. Soon after, Ben launched Disaster Accountability Project, an independent watchdog, to confront the root causes of the failed Katrina response and maximize the impact of billions of dollars of disaster relief and humanitarian aid. Disaster Accountability Project has successfully advocated for the release of millions of dollars of disaster relief and recovery funds after Superstorm Sandy, investigated deficiencies in emergency planning surrounding 19 commercial U.S. nuclear power plants, and improved the transparency of nearly 2 billion dollars of disaster relief donations after disasters in the U.S., Haiti and Nepal. Under Ben's leadership, DAP's reports, advocacy, and op-eds have been covered by global news media including The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and CNN. Many of DAP's successes over its thirteen years are attributable to the hundreds of volunteers from around the world that Ben has recruited and managed. Prior to starting DAP, Ben had a background in youth civic engagement and issue advocacy. He wrote successful legislation in Connecticut and created a Youth Cabinet in Missouri. What does Mississippi have to do with getting to the Moon? What are the laws concerning the Moon? We'll find out with the help of our guest Michelle L.D. Hanlon, Executive Director, Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law and Co-Founder, President & CEO of For All Moonkind In 1971, Apollo 14 was the third Moon mission of the U.S. Apollo space program, but the flight was unique in one way: tree seeds were taken on the flight to later germinate “Moon Trees”! When selected for the Apollo 14 mission, Astronaut Stuart Roosa was allowed to carry approximately 500 tree seeds with him into space. The species selected were sycamore, loblolly pine, sweetgum, redwood, and Douglas fir, taken from lots of seeds collected at two U.S.F.S. Institute of Forest Genetics (I.F.G.) stations, the southern station in Gulfport, Mississippi, and the western station in Placerville, California. We call upon all former Navy SeaBees to join us for a conversation marking the 83rd anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Navy's Construction Battalions on March 5, 1942. Formed in response to the urgent need for military construction forces capable of working under combat conditions, the Seabees have since established themselves as an indispensable part of U.S. military operations. Before World War II, the Navy relied on civilian contractors to build bases and infrastructure. However, after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entry into the war, it became clear that construction crews needed to be able to defend themselves. The solution was the formation of Naval Construction Battalions—skilled builders trained as combatants. The name “Seabees” comes from the phonetic pronunciation of the initials “CB.” Seabees undergo rigorous training that combines construction expertise with military readiness. Initial training takes place at the Naval Construction Training Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, and Port Hueneme, California. Recruits learn essential skills like carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, heavy equipment operation, and demolition. In addition, they receive weapons training and instruction in defensive tactics, ensuring they can operate in hostile environments. Their motto, “We Build, We Fight,” reflects their dual purpose. During World War II, Seabees were deployed to the Pacific and European theaters, constructing airstrips, roads, bridges, and bases under combat conditions. They played a key role in the island-hopping campaigns of the Pacific, building the infrastructure necessary for advancing U.S. forces. In the Battle of Guadalcanal, Seabees constructed Henderson Field, a crucial airstrip that enabled the Allies to gain air superiority. At Iwo Jima, they worked under constant enemy fire, repairing airfields to keep American planes in the fight. By the war's end, Seabees had built over 400 advanced bases and countless facilities that proved essential to victory. When the Korean War erupted in 1950, the Seabees were once again called upon to provide critical construction support. They built airstrips, roads, and supply depots in challenging environments. One of their most notable achievements was the rapid construction of an airfield at Wonsan, which played a key role in supporting Marine and Army operations. Seabees also repaired and maintained infrastructure in war-torn areas, showcasing their ability to work in extreme conditions. In Vietnam, the Seabees operated extensively, constructing bases, airstrips, hospitals, and roads while also engaging in civic action projects. They built schools, hospitals, and bridges to help local communities, winning the support of Vietnamese civilians. One of their most daring projects was the construction of Khe Sanh Combat Base, a strategic stronghold. Seabees worked under enemy fire to complete the base, enabling U.S. forces to hold their ground during the pivotal siege of Khe Sanh in 1968. Since Vietnam, Seabees have continued to play a crucial role in military and humanitarian missions worldwide. They built infrastructure in the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, repaired damage from hurricanes and natural disasters, and provided disaster relief in Haiti and the Philippines. In Iraq and Afghanistan, Seabees built forward operating bases, roads, and medical facilities, ensuring U.S. and allied forces had the support they needed. Mark Moore is the Vice President and General Manager of Gulf Islands Waterpark in Gulfport, Mississippi. With nearly 30 years of experience in the water park industry, Mark started his career as a lifeguard and has since played a pivotal role in developing operational efficiencies and guest experience strategies. Gulf Islands Water Park, which opened just weeks before Hurricane Katrina in 2005, has grown into a regional attraction, drawing visitors from across the Gulf Coast. In this interview, Mark talks about cabanas as daytime hotels, balancing demand with dynamic pricing, and free soft drinks. Cabanas as Daytime Hotels “I said to a friend who operates a park with over 100 cabanas, ‘So you're a daytime hotel,' and he kind of cocked his head at me and said, ‘I never thought about it that way.'” Mark shared an insightful perspective on the role cabanas play in the water park experience. He compared them to hotel rooms, emphasizing how guests use them as a home base for relaxation, much like a hotel stay. The average length of a hotel stay, when excluding sleeping hours, is similar to the average duration of a visit to a water park—around four to five hours. With this in mind, Gulf Islands Water Park has considered adding amenities typically found in hotels, such as towels, cushioned seating, and concierge-style service, to elevate the cabana experience. Recognizing cabanas as more than just an upcharge but rather a premium hospitality experience has allowed them to enhance guest satisfaction and increase demand for these spaces. Balancing Demand with Dynamic Pricing “It took about two years to convince ownership, but once we did, we saw our weekday attendance grow by 8 to 10%, while peak weekend crowds eased up by about 2 to 3%.” Mark discussed the journey of implementing dynamic pricing at Gulf Islands Water Park, a process inspired by his experience in hotel management. The idea was initially met with hesitation, but after demonstrating how businesses across various industries use demand-based pricing to influence consumer behavior, ownership came on board. The result has been a more evenly distributed attendance pattern, reducing strain on peak days while incentivizing visits on traditionally slower weekdays. The messaging around dynamic pricing has been carefully framed to highlight guest value—focusing on the savings of visiting during less crowded periods rather than the higher cost of peak days. Over time, guests have embraced the model, with many now purchasing tickets in advance to secure the best possible rate. Free Soft Drinks “We had done everything we could to speed up our food service, but then we realized the biggest bottleneck was people deciding on drinks. Offering free soft drinks eliminated that completely.” Inspired by Holiday World's long-standing free soft drink program, Gulf Islands Water Park introduced complimentary fountain drinks as a way to improve efficiency and enhance guest experience. The results were immediate—food and beverage revenue increased by 20% in the first year, and the overall guest experience improved as wait times at food stands significantly decreased. Instead of bottlenecks forming as guests debated drink choices, they now receive their food quickly and grab a drink at self-serve stations. While there were initial operational challenges, such as managing cup waste, the overall benefits far outweighed the drawbacks. The move has been a major marketing win, with guests frequently citing free drinks as a key perk of visiting the park. Gulf Islands Water Park continues to evolve by embracing innovative operational strategies and guest-centric enhancements. To learn more about the park, visit gulfislandswaterpark.com. The largest seafood distributor on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and two of its managers have been sentenced on federal charges of mislabeling inexpensive imported seafood as local premium fish weeks after a restaurant and its co-owner were also sentenced. “This large-scale scheme to misbrand imported seafood as local Gulf Coast seafood hurt local fishermen and consumers,” said Todd Gee, the U.S. attorney for southern Mississippi. “These criminal convictions should put restaurants and wholesalers on notice that they must be honest with customers about what is actually being sold.” Sentencing took place in Gulfport for Quality Poultry and Seafood Inc. (QPS), sales manager Todd A. Rosetti, and business manager James W. Gunkel. QPS and the two managers pleaded guilty on August 27 to conspiring to mislabel seafood and commit wire fraud. QPS was sentenced to five years of probation and was ordered to pay $1 million in forfeitures and a $500,000 criminal fine. Prosecutors said the misbranding scheme began as early as 2002 and continued through November 2019. Rosetti received eight months in prison, followed by six months of home detention, one year of supervised release, and 100 hours of community service. Gunkel received two years of probation, one year of home detention, and 50 hours of community service. Mary Mahoney's Old French House and its co-owner/manager Anthony Charles Cvitanovich, pleaded guilty to similar charges May 30 and were sentenced November 18. Mahoney's was founded in Biloxi in 1962 in a building that dates to 1737, and it's a popular spot for tourists. The restaurant pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to misbrand seafood. Mahoney's admitted that between December 2013 and November 2019, the company and its co-conspirators at QPS fraudulently sold about 58,750 pounds (26,649 kilograms) of frozen seafood imported from Africa, India, and South America as local premium species. The court ordered the restaurant and QPS to maintain at least five years of records describing the species, sources, and cost of seafood it acquires to sell to customers, and that they make the records available to any relevant federal, state, or local government agency. Hi, we're Kaylee and Ian. Originally from Kentucky, we moved to Gulfport, Florida with a lifelong dream: to live on a sailboat. Life in Kentucky had been difficult for us with various financial and medical struggles, but we took what little money we had and decided to take a chance on the life we wanted so badly. With limited funds, we poured our hearts and souls into making it happen. Unbridled Spirit, our beloved 35ft Columbia sailboat, was neglected and needed many repairs. We fell in love with her the minute we saw her and wanted her as our own anyway. She wasn't livable, but we were determined to make her our home. We sacrificed everything for her; we lived out of our vehicle to save money, spent every dime of our paycheck on the things she needed, and worked every night and weekend after our day jobs. We even worked while sick or injured, then went back to sleep in our vehicle every night.Living in our truck was grueling. The Florida heat, without AC, was unbearable. Even a simple bathroom trip meant a 20-minute journey to a gas station. But we were determined, channeling every penny into the boat.We began by tackling the infestation of palmetto bugs and layers of mold and rot. Scrubbing every inch, often wearing masks to protect ourselves, we transformed the boat. Ian tirelessly worked on the engine, finally bringing it to life—a moment of pure joy.We dedicated ourselves to the process, engaging in weeks of back-breaking labor, replacing the interior piece by piece. Despite the busted fingers and sore hands, we created a livable space. Though far from finished, we no longer had to endure life in our truck.Sunday night shattered our dreams at the hands of Debby. The storm's ferocity caught us off guard. Flooding was expected, and we didn't have a way to evacuate. Our only options were to stay in our boat, which was attached to a mooring ball, or to stay in our truck, which seemed dangerous with the flash flooding. We reinforced our boat with extra lines and did all we could to secure our home.Winds and waves became too strong, and our dinghy was swept away, solar panels were torn off, and we were violently tossed around inside. Water surged in, and the standing rigging began to tear out.Petrified and helpless, we attempted to anchor, but it quickly snapped. With no motor keys due to the storm's chaos, we secured essential belongings in a dry bag. The boat spun out of control, narrowly avoiding a collision before a wave pushed us toward the seawall.Just before impact, we jumped into chest-deep water and swam to shore. We watched in horror as our boat slammed into the seawall, creating a gaping hole and accelerating the flooding. Now, we face an uncertain future. Our beloved Unbridled Spirit is likely totaled, and we're back to sleeping in our vehicle. We lost our home, memories, belongings, and months of labor. We had plans and dreams for our future on that boat, and it's heartbreaking to see it all washed away.Reluctantly, we created a GoFundMe after numerous suggestions. We don't expect anything, but any support, even a share, means the world to us. We could use help with securing housing, replacing our personal belongings such as toiletries and clothing, and with food since we are unfortunately living in our truck again. Updates will be posted on Facebook. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this storm. Many suffered severe damage, and you are all in our prayers. Much love to you all.https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-after-debby-took-unbridled-spirit-our-home?lang=en_US&utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=facebookBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
