A new year means a new After Class Podcast series! The guys take an initial look at John's new book “Priestly Presence” which they will use to guide this series. This first episode focuses especially on how Christians should relate to the world. They engage Richard Niebuhr's paradigm that he laid out in his book “Christ and Culture” to look for common ground as well as deficiencies. This should prove to be a practical series for Christians wondering how to navigate our tumultuous times.
Christians in North America today face increasing hostility for publicly identifying with the faith and affirming basic moral principles that were, until recently, held by most people. For many Christ-followers, being accused of hate or being called a bigot for embracing the Bible's teachings on a variety of issues—sex, gender, abortion, suicide—is disorienting and discouraging. How did we get here? What should we do now? And, importantly, what new missional opportunities are we being presented with in the world we find ourselves in? These are the questions we will explore in this three-part series.

How has our culture influenced you? Have you downloaded Instagram? Is there a desire in you to climb the corporate ladder or have a beautiful home that HGTV would want to visit? These things are in and of themselves evil or sinful. However, we must be aware that the world has the habit of trying to infiltrate our hearts, convincing us it's more important than Jesus.

Richard Niebuhr's classic, Christ and Culture has shaped the way we understand the relationship of the church and culture by assuming that what we mean by "Christ" when we discuss Christ and culture is Christian ethics. But is that the right place to start? Shouldn't ontology be the starting place since all things were created by Christ and for him? (Col. 1:15-17) If we take this as our starting point, what becomes of Niebuhr's famous archetypes of Christ and Culture? Join the Pugs today as they ruminate on the theme! Presenting at Concordia University in Austin, Texas, Larry presents three perspectives from which we should consider creation care: 1) God's Word, the Bible; 2) God's World - what we observe as we study God's good creation; and 3) God's Work - what we do to take care of His amazing and bountiful creation. Areas of concern which he addresses are loss of biodiversity, the growing accumulation of waste and trash, pollution in various forms, and a warming planet.
The past few weeks we've been talking about culture. Culture is what we make of the world. Sometimes as we walk through life and encounter elements of culture, even though we know what is good and right, we just don't want to do it. We want to experience that part of culture. This week we looked at three stories of people who did just that. While looking at these stories, we see the Paradox of Culture and how good God is that He shows us grace when we get it wrong.
Dr. Painter carries us on a journey from tilting windmills to a transformed world, showing how the gospel narrative not only changes our reality, but expands our imagination of what is possible. Don't miss this profoundly moving presentation of the gospel story in all its power and wonder!
King Nebuchadnezzar gets a really big head, he does not want to die, or have any other kingdom arise. He also wants everyone to bow down to his beliefs and culture. What do Christians do when culture tries to bend it towards an unbiblical and unholy way of life? Daniel's friend's show some really important ways to understand how to stand up to culture.

Sermons – New Life in Christ Church | Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania
One of the biggest challenges to the Christian faith is knowing how to relate our faith to life in the world, especially when our faith comes under attack. The Bible is clear that this world is not our home, we are citizens of the kingdom of heaven (1 Peter 1:1, 2:11). The worlds beliefs, values, and convictions conflict with the kingdom in which we live. Even though the message is not always appreciated, we are called to be witnesses, to be salt and light, and to pray for Gods kingdom to come and will be done. Jesus said we need to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16). How do we do that? Even though he lived thousands of years before Jesus said this, Abraham demonstrated this way of living as he sojourned in Canaan. Its an important example for us as we consider the hostility of our own day.
