We welcomed Karlton Johnson, CEO of NSS and Chairman of the NSS Board of Governors. We started the program with our guest remembering Anita Gayle, former CEO of NSS. Karlton, a caller and myself also honored Anita who recently passed away. I asked Karlton a lead off question about the fate of Artemis and SLS. This started an amazing discussion with great story examples from our guest on leadership, changes, strategy for moving forward and realizing that today, many things given the new administration are just unknown and unsettled. Later we talked about valuing space and once again our guest provided us with an excellent example. Marshall call to provide his own examples of space value for farming plus Phil called with another great question you will want to hear. I believe this to be an important 90 minute discussion so don't miss it. See the full summary when available at www.thespaceshow.com for this date, Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025.

This episode of Building the Base features a discussion with Nadia Schadlow, a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, and Stephen Rodriguez, an investor in the defense tech space who is leading The Atlantic Council's work on Software-Defined Warfare. Nadia and Stephen have extensive backgrounds in national security: Nadia spent many years at the Defense Department and was the architect of the 2017 National Security Strategy under President Trump, while Stephen has experience spanning the intelligence community, policy world, tech startups, and now The Atlantic Council. Overall, the discussion highlights the value of bringing together diverse perspectives from government, industry, and academia to tackle the complex challenges facing national security today. This episode was recorded live at the Reagan National Defense Forum on December 7, 2024.Five Key Takeaways: The adage "DoD does not have an innovation problem, it has an innovation adoption problem" holds true. Both Nadia and Stephen emphasize the need to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies across the commercial and defense sectors. Stephen recently contributed to an Atlantic Council report (alongside co-host Hondo) on this topic. Heed the Four Ms: The idea of Software-Defined Warfare is all about finding practical, near-term ways to enhance the capabilities of the military's existing platforms and systems, rather than just focusing on long-term future tech. Stephen stresses the importance of identifying the right Four Ms - "Money, Mission, Motivation, and Mechanism" - for companies looking to work with the military.Crafting a national security strategy... where to begin? Nadia explains (from experience) that crafting an effective NSS is all about clearly defining the country's key interests, understanding the challenges, and proposing high-level solutions; the departments then have to figure out the operational details.Crisis of Repetition: In her 2024 Breaking Defense op-ed, "America's crisis of repetition is hurting national security," Nadia proposes four steps by which Washington can break the cycle of writing reports that are never fully implemented: 1) aggregate what's been done, 2) assess why past administrations failed to achieve goals, 3) research existing legislative authorities, and 4) assign accountability for leading implementation.Optimization opportunities exist, leveraging AI and DOGE: Nadia suggests that AI could be used to "identify the regulatory environment" and "point out how many duplicative and repeating and inane regulations there are," helping to enact regulatory reform that ultimately speeds up DoD innovation adoption.

Cattle Industry News NCBA Endorsed Disaster Tax Relief Bill, Passes Senate The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the U.S. Senate for passing the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. In addition to providing much needed relief to victims of hurricanes, this legislation would provide tax relief for cattle producers who received payments due to wildfires. Previously, these payments counted as taxable income, meaning producers who already suffered from disasters were hurt again by having their relief payments taxed. The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act addresses limitations in casualty losses and allows producers to take greater deductions for disaster related losses. Additionally, the bill excludes any payments received due to a “qualified wildfire disaster” from being counted as income for federal tax purposes. The bill also retroactively applies to any wildfire payments received in tax years 2020 through 2025. Producers will have the opportunity to file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for relief payments received in these previous years.  The complete bill can be reviewed HERE. Cattlemen Relieved By Court Decision To Halt Corporate Transparency Act Many producers hailed the issuance of a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the Corporate Transparency Act from being enforced on January 1, 2025. This ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas protects millions of family farmers and ranchers from onerous reporting requirements imposed by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. We've talked about The Corporate Transparency Act in great detail a few episodes back and remember that every producers' situation is different, and this information should not be construed as professional advice. Is it time for 10-minute medicine deliveries?

Mint Business News

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2024 4:07

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, November 8, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. One of India's marquee airlines finally ended its journey yesterday. The Supreme Court ordered the liquidation of Jet Airways, ending a long quest for survival. Krishna Yadav writes that the Jalan Kalrock Consortium had failed to meet obligations such as infusing ₹350 crore and settling worker dues, leading to this decision. Jet Airways has been bankrupt since April 2019. Krishna adds that this case has raised concerns about the effectiveness of India's Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, particularly regarding airline insolvencies. Have you ever thought why we get pizzas and groceries in 10 minutes, but not life-saving medicines? That might change soon. Jessica Jani writes that companies like Tata 1mg, PharmEasy, and Apollo 24/7 are piloting ultra-fast medicine delivery services. 1mg is collaborating with fellow Tata brand BigBasket for quick delivery in select cities, while Apollo 24/7 has launched a 19-minute delivery in major markets. Swiggy is also partnering with PharmEasy for under-10-minute deliveries in Bengaluru. However, inventory management, medicine storage, and regulatory compliance are big challenges.  In a surprise decision, the government announced that it will stop paying interest on National Savings Scheme accounts from October 1. This means that both principal and interest will be taxable on withdrawal. Aprajita Sharma spoke to NSS holders who expressed concerns about the negative impact on their tax liabilities as senior citizens. The sudden change has also prompted calls for the government to reconsider its decision, and offer tax relief or alternative investment options. This move undermines trust in small savings schemes, and it also triggers fears about the stability of other savings products like the Public Provident Fund. A day after the big result, we're still assessing the implication of Donald Trump's victory. Shouvik Das writes that Trump's pro-business and anti-regulations will be favourable for Big Tech companies like Twitter and Meta. These companies have faced some issues in India as well as Europe, where they are under scrutiny for their trade practices. Lawyers and policymakers that Shouvik spoke to told him that Trump's backing could ease their worries in India, which has often been tough on Big Tech's practices so far. For most, homes are private spaces. It's where you come to relax, take a breather, and sometimes escape from the outside world. Not for influencers, though: Pratishtha Bagai writes about content creators who share tours of their homes on social media. House tours have become a major "self-expression trend", as Pratishtha writes. Experts suggest this fascination reflects aspirational consumer behavior. Viewers seem to be actually influenced and inspired to recreate the aesthetics of their favorite influencers in their own homes, irrespective of the high costs involved in such a practice.

ADHD Coach Katherine Sanders Today's episode is different: what happens when our energy runs out?I wanted to share with you the how I responded to a day of zero energy and why I think it's important for ADHD Coaches - and coaches in general - to show up as real humans who have days where our personal growth shows up as love, compassion and permission instead of shiny routines, perky planners and catchy phrases in pep talks. (My clients will confirm I never use any of those...)There are a few research studies that are relevant, showing that ADHD adults are more likely to report fatigue and experience low energy but the questions for today are simple:What do I NEED? How can I meet that need? What people, resources, skills are available to me?How can I show myself compassion and adaptability?I hope you enjoy this different episode - I know I liked sharing something personal and more coach-like with you.Remember to let me know if you have questions - I'll be making a series of 5-10 minute episodes soon to answer them. As we continue to discuss generative AI on Nashville Software School's podcast, Stories from the Hackery, Founder and CEO John Work and lead Data instructor Michael Holloway, dive into various techniques for leveraging large language models (LLMs) like generative AI. They explore the potential of using hosted public LLMs via chatbot interfaces and discuss strategies for embedding LLMs into applications. One such technique discussed is the use of a prompt engineering, which involves wrapping the LLM API to tailor user prompts for more effective responses. They also discuss more advanced techniques like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which involves using external data to tailor LLM responses further. This approach helps mitigate challenges like hallucination and ensures contextually relevant responses. Additionally, they touch on fine-tuning LLMs for specific applications, which requires more computational resources and domain expertise. John and Michael highlight the importance of having machine learning skills to implement these techniques effectively. While fine-tuning LLMs may require specialized skills and resources, the emergence of smaller LLMs makes certain applications more accessible. They also mention the potential of multi-agent models for deeper and more focused outputs, indicating an exciting direction for LLM applications. Refers to artificial intelligence systems that have the capability to generate new content, such as images, text, audio, or even video, that is similar to, or inspired by, the data they were trained on. These systems are designed to learn the underlying patterns and structures within the data and then generate novel outputs based on that understanding. LLMs = Large Language Models. Refers to a type of artificial intelligence (AI) model that has been trained on vast amounts of text data in order to understand and generate human-like language. These models, such as OpenAI's GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) series, are designed to process and generate text in a wide range of contexts, tasks, and languages. Foundation Model = Foundation models use self-supervised learning to create labels from input data. This means no one has instructed or trained the model with labeled training data sets. This feature separates LLMs from previous ML architectures, which use supervised or unsupervised learning. Emergent Behavior = Refers to actions or patterns that weren't explicitly programmed into an AI system but developed as a natural outcome of its complexity and interactions. Imagine a colony of ants. No single ant has the blueprint for the colony's intricate behavior.

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Kim Smith. Kimberley Bodenhamer Smith's Facebook Bio says: “Texan born in California and residing in Tennessee: Mudder, Author, unicyclist, Caver, Transhumanist, and an Episcopalian.” Many other labels and clubs could be added to the vast interests of this American TAG Caver. Kim, as she prefers to be called by friends and family (or Kimmie with an IE) is a typical Alpha female caver. "She states you either love me or hate me. I have a polarizing personality. Kim bought Chilliheads a fleece product company, from Darrell and Susan Bryant in the winter of 2010. The company started on Signal Mountain, TN in 1991. Chilliheads was one of the first fleece hat and liner companies in the southwest and serviced mountaineers, rock climbers, skiers, kayakers and cavers just to name a few markets. This was a “golden ticket” into the caving community that is notoriously a very closed community for a number of very legitimate reasons which we discuss. Kim states; there are only 15,000 active NSS Cavers in the US. Kimberley put the pleasure and service of the sport before her business, and became the secretary of Chattanooga Grotto and sat on the executive committee for three years. Finishing out her Geo-political contribution to the National Speleological Society, as the chairwoman of CG in 2014. The Chattanooga grotto is an elite group of big-name Cavers and has been in existence for over 50+years. Kim has also been a member of the Sewanee Mountain Grotto. Her cave mentors have been the late Moore J. Smith of Lookout Mountain, Page Ashwell of the TAG Grotto, Kelly Smallwood of the G-Spot Grotto, and the late Steve Hudson of PMI ropes. Her love of adventure began by running away from ski school on Mammoth Mountain at five in 1981—to white water rafting the Zambezi river in August 1999, right after South Africa's apartheid. She also built a cabin off grid at 10,000 feet in Park County Colorado, in South Park Ranches, during her early 20s. She is an avid skier/snowboarder. The snowboarder was retired in 2006 after having a level three spinal fusion at C-three, four and five. Kim's NSS number is RL63293. She's waiting on that 15 year pin—it's a year or two off from showing up in the mail. Kim is fiercely loyal and loving. Kim is proudest accomplishment in life is her son Bo, 19 and Burke who is a senior and 18. She believes deeply in manifestation and synchronicity. Thanks for listening!
