(NLV)Drie kort sinne wat so baie sê. 454: Ronald Mengerink of Dochter van de Korenaar is Still Hoping to Make the Perfect Beer

De Dochter van de Korenaar (https://www.dedochtervandekorenaar.be) is unusual even for Belgium—a country full of brewers who don't particularly enjoy being hemmed in by style definitions. Founder Ronald Mengerink has a passion for aging beer in barrels, but the expressions take a more vinous, wine-like approach than those more commonly found in North America. And his riff on port-like beer, Tout va Bien, is one that can't be made commercially in many places due to the process—inspired by fortified wine, arresting fermentation with an addition of grain spirits. English-style barleywine, Portugese process, French name, Dutch brewer, Belgian beer—it's an idiosyncratic but fascinating approach to beer making. In this episode, Mengerink discusses: barrel-aging everything from 3 percent ABV pale beer to port-like fortified barleywine building a brewhouse with an intentionally wide and shallow lauter tun and kettle drawing inspiration from American beers such as Bell's Two Hearted finding balance despite big malt bills, high ABVs, and bold flavors achieving proper viscosity through extended aging conscious cellar design for intentional barrel-aging sourcing barrels from winemakers, and the differences between American and French oak how tannins reduce dissolved oxygen in barrel-aged beers And more. Today on The Cameron Journal Podcast we are exploring the beautiful world that Otis Lee has discovered in the highlands of Brazil. In this book, I Was Born in the Forest, he tells the story of the Columbo tribes of Brazil. These towns were founded by escaped slaves from the Portugese plantations in Brazil and were self-sustaining and held back European forces for nearly 100 years. The descendants are still there today and they are a unique aspect of the greater African diaspora in the New World. We talk about all these topics and his other books in this wide ranging and delightful conversation. You can learn more at: https://otislee.com

Ludimila had graduated in psychology and opened her doors as a therapist a few years previously, but wondered whether she was being prompted to hold onto her secure, old work as a teacher and translator. So she asked, 'What should I focus on professionally?' and cast Hexagram 3, Sprouting, with no changing lines. It's a beautifully simple answer, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring it together. Those explorations touched on the nuclear story, at which point I came up with a highly sophisticated visual aid... (This may come in useful towards the end of the episode if you're not familiar with nuclear trigrams and hexagrams!) You can learn more about Ludimila and her work here - she does sessions in both Portugese and English.

Hello to you listening in Berlin, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (& a bit more) for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. This lovely poem you're about to hear was written in Portugese by Ricardo Gondim Rodrigues, a Brazilian theologian and progressive pastor. The English translation and title (“My Soul Has a Hat”) is often mis-attributed to Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), poet, novelist, essayist, and one of the founders of Brazilian modernism.Click HERE to read the backstory.Click HERE to read “My Soul Has a Hat” by Mário de Andrade Is Fake News for more information. Remember, not everything you find on the InterWeb is correct. Accuracy is everything!O Tempo que Foge (The Time That Runs Away)"I counted my years and realized that I have less time to live by, than I have lived so far. I feel like a child who won a pack of candies: at first, he ate them with pleasure but when he realized that there was little left, he began to taste them intensely.I have no time for endless meetings where the statutes, rules, procedures and internal regulations are discussed, knowing that nothing will be done.I no longer have the patience to stand absurd people who, despite their chronological age, have not grown up. My time is too short: I want the essence; my spirit is in a hurry. I do not have much candy in the package anymore.I want to live next to humans, very realistic people who know how to laugh at their mistakes and who are not inflated by their own triumphs and who take responsibility for their actions. In this way, human dignity is defended and we live in truth and honesty. It is the essentials that make life useful.I want to surround myself with people who know how to touch the hearts of those whom hard strokes of life have learned to grow with sweet touches of the soul.Yes, I'm in a hurry. I'm in a hurry to live with the intensity that only maturity can give. I do not intend to waste any of the remaining desserts. I am sure they will be exquisite, much more than those eaten so far.My goal is to reach the end satisfied and at peace with my loved ones and my conscience. We have two lives and the second begins when you realize you only have one."Question: Are you spending your time on the right things? They were here in California for a film festival and recording of future stories for their award-winning series on passionate lifestyles.  And author Annelise Schinzinger made it up the hill to chat with us about her new book documenting her pioneering experiences in South America with Ayahuasca, a psychoactive brew used by Amazonian tribes for spiritual and healing purposes. Annelise’s experiences go back to the 1970’s, way before Ayahuasca was known  in North America.  I was particularly fascinated by her understanding of “burracheira,” the field of consciousness created by those sharing an Ayahuasca experience. It is also worth noting that she was the Portugese translater for scientist Dennis McKenna in his field research while in Brazil. She takes us on a most fascinating and insightful journey into some of the deeper mysteries of life and death. Enjoy!

More ballads, plays, biographies and books were written about Avery's adventures than any other pirate. His contemporaries crowned him "the pirate king" for pulling off the richest heist in pirate history and escaping with his head intact (unlike Blackbeard and his infamous Flying Gang). Avery was now the most wanted criminal on earth. To the authorities, Avery was the enemy of all mankind. To the people he was a hero. Rumors swirled about his disappearance. The only certainty is that Henry Avery became a ghost. 1686 Portugese pirate
