Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Watermelon Slim! Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans has built a remarkable reputation with his raw, impassioned intensity. HARP Magazine wrote “From sizzling slide guitar…to nitty-gritty harp blowing…to a gruff, resonating Okie twang, Slim delivers acutely personal workingman blues with both hands on the wheel of life, a bottle of hooch in his pocket, and the Bible on the passenger seat.” Paste Magazine writes “He’s one hell of a bottleneck guitarist, and he’s got that cry in his voice that only the greatest singers in the genre have had before him.”Watermelon Slim,Into The Sunset,Traveling ManWatermelon Slim,Oklahoma Blues,Traveling Manwww.makingascene.org,WaterMelon Slim,Watermelon Slim,Smokestack Lightning/Two Trains Running,Traveling ManWatermelon Slim,Highway Blues,Traveling Man

This is a tune from our local Old Time jam held once per month in the historic old "Occidental Hotel" in Buffalo, WY. Lynn Young and Mark Paninos were the lead players on this tune. I was very much in the background playing my banjo. Anyway, this is one of my favorite tunes of the ones I've recorded over the last few years at our old time jams. And, Lynn and Mark's fiddle playing (when they were part of "Too Wet to Plow" years ago) is what got me hooked on old time music and led to me playing the banjo and, playing with our local old time group (Lynn is the one responsible for this great group and Mark joins us when he can) over the last few years lead to me buying my first fiddle last August.

Southern Guitar MastersMississippi Fred McDowell Charley Patton Robert JohnsonSkip James Bukka White Rose Hemphill Sunnyland SlimFrom southern England:CreamThe blues is about many things. About how your woman done you wrong. The Boss Man being mean to you. Things humorous. Things sad. Death. Dying and all manner of worldly matters concern the blues. The blues was created long before the turn of the 19th century. The blues was built on slavery and the fact that a man was taken from his family and homeland against his will. Slavery happened for centuries. However; it wasn't until those slaves were brought to the shores of the United States that the blues, as we know the art form today, was born. The blues reside in almost every country in the world. Even countries that don't call English it's first language.Everyone in the world can relate to the blues. And today, with all the problems in the world, more and more people have an absolute right to sing the blues.Today's show presents the blues from the early part of the 20th century. These are but a handful of the original blues men who traveled the dusty roads of the south; did time in many of the prisons and rode the rods, as the trains were called back then, into the annals of musical history. Just imagine that time. This is one show I really enjoyed putting together.
