Today's guest gives me the blues. But it's OK; that's his job. I welcome Lance Lopez to the podcast. While music wasn't exactly in his DNA, it was a huge part of his family. His dad was in the Army with Elvis Presley and they stayed friends after their time in the service. When he wanted to learn guitar, his dad gave him and acoustic and a Chuck Berry record and said, “Learn this”; no mean feat for a kid not even in double digits. But his world changed when he saw Stevie Ray Vaughan open for BB King. Lance had no idea who Stevie was at the time. But he sure knew who he was after. He moved to New Orleans with his dad, who encouraged him to play gigs in the French Quarter after school. So while most teens are working at McDonald's, Lance was playing three gigs a night and then going to class in the morning. All that work payed off when Buddy Miles saw him play and took him under his wing. After four solo albums and living the blues, Lance's sound changed and songwriting became his craft instead of soloing. He has been unbelievably busy over the years; at one point even hearing one of his songs and not recognizing himself. But when COVID slowed everything down, he turned to writing and recording remotely as well as repairing tube amps as another income source. Lance's new album, Trouble Is Good, is a direct product of the pandemic. It's packed with amazing guests and there's a tribute to one of his favorite guitarists, who we lost during that time. Go to lancelopez.net and grab Trouble Is Good. Because the album is good, whether you're a blues fan or not. Follow him @lancelopezguitarist for info and tour dates. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Lance Lopez is an American blues rock and Texas blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Lopez has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Beck has described Lopez as "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". Lopez has spoken over the years about being mentored by both Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter. Lopez was age 16 at the time he met Gibbons, and they have remained friends throughout. Over the period between 2008 and 2011, Lopez toured in Europe extensively, playing at larger music festivals and supporting acts including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2009, Lopez had signed a new recording contract with MIG (Made In Germany) Music / String Commander, who were based in Hanover, Germany. In 2010, the album Salvation From Sundown, which was produced by Jim Gaines was released by MIG. It was issued in limited edition format alongside a DVD of the Rockpalast concert recorded on July 25, 2009. It was deliberately arranged in a Texas blues style, which led to Jeff Beck calling Lopez, "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". In March 2012, MIG Music released the sixth album from Lopez, Handmade Music. As with the previous release, the album was produced by Jim Gaines and recorded at the Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2012, Supersonic Blues Machine was formed by Lopez, the drummer Kenny Aronoff, and the bassist and record producer Fabrizio Grossi. They released their debut album, West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco, which was recorded mainly by the three musicians separately and using Pro Tools technology to bring the various elements together. The same principle was used in selecting the guest musicians tracks to be added to the overall mix. The band was 'augmented' on the recording by Billy Gibbons, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales and Chris Duarte. Supersonic Blues Machine had its worldwide debut concert at the Holland International Blues Festival on June 4, 2016, in Grolloo, the Netherlands. The rigors of touring and the lifestyle caught up with Lopez around this time. Lopez stated "My own personal struggles were overcoming alcoholism, drug addiction and to start eating healthier, lose weight and exercise... I struggled for years drinking and drugging and eating badly while I was drinking... I became very overweight". Once recovered, Lopez noted about performing, "That still doesn't mean every night is perfect... but at least I can walk away and say I did the best I could and I was sober doing it". His next release was Live in NYC (2016), which was issued on Cleopatra Records and produced by Paul Nelson. The recording come out of Lopez attending, and performing at, the 70th birthday party for Johnny Winter. Lopez signed with the Mascot Label Group in November 2017, and his debut album on their Provogue Records imprint was Tell the Truth, which was released on March 2, 2018.It was produced by Fabrizio Grossi, and featured Jimmy Zavala. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Brought to you by The Rock Star Chronicles Series One my new book featuring over 45 intimate conversations with the greatest music legends the world will ever know. Available now at bookbay.com and amazon.com. With a collection of over 21 albums, it's no wonder Gary Hoey is listed as one of the top 100 guitarists of all time.  The world-renowned rock guitarist's first break came in 1987 when Ozzy Osbourne liked Hoey's tape enough to fly him to LA for an audition and encouraging him to move to the West Coast. In 1990 Hoey was signed to Reprise Records with a short-lived band called Heavy Bones but followed up in 1993 with a solo album and Gary's cover of “Hocus Pocus” rocketed into the Billboard's Top 5 Rock Tracks.  He went on to score the successful “Endless Summer II” soundtrack for New Line Cinema and in 1995 started a trilogy of “Ho!Ho! Hoey,” a collection of instrumental Christmas classics that continues each year in his Rockin Holiday shows.  Gary's release in 2016, “Dust & Bones,” displayed an exuberant fusion of blues and rock. But whatever style he plays, one thing is certain, Gary Hoey is a fiery, charismatic player who connects with the crowd. Whether he's playing scorching originals or classic rock covers, his solos are thrilling and reminiscent of Clapton or Stevie Ray in their fiery youth. One thing that remains consistent is Hoey's impassioned command of the guitar. He can attack his instrument with feral intensity and then play something very soft and achingly beautiful. This ability to mix feeling, phrasing, technique, and tone is the true mark of a master guitarist. Please welcome rock & blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer GARY HOEY to Interviewing the Legends …   Purchase the latest release by GARY HOEY Neon Highway Blues  At amazon.com Gary Hoey releases his new blues album NEON HIGHWAY BLUES on Provogue Records. Starting with 2013's DEJA BLUES and continuing with 2016's DUST & BONES, Hoey has tapped into his early musical influences and applied his own feral skills to take the format in a unique direction. He stays in the same lane on his latest endeavor, NEON HIGHWAY BLUES, steering its 11 tracks with the confidence and assuredness of a veteran and the freshness of someone who's still in the process of discovery and refinement -- with the help of famous friends such as Eric Gales, Lance Lopez, Josh Smith and Hoey's 17-year-old son Ian. "I really wanted to make sure this album had a lot of blues on it," says Hoey, who self-produced NEON HIGHWAY BLUES and recorded it at his home studio in New Hampshire. "It's funny because sometimes you can set out to do a blues record and halfway through you realize there's not actually that many blues songs. Lance Lopez has been on a slow, steady climb up the mountain of blues rock guitar heavyweights for the last decade. Lance has a voice that let's you know he's walked the walk and his smoky tenor has grown more gravely and passionate with the years. Lopez started playing professionally at the age of 14 in bars and clubs in and around New Orleans, and along the Gulf Coast. After High School, he was hired by soul great Johnny Taylor when he was just 17. Quickly becoming a modern blues legend, he was Lucky Peterson's band leader at 18, and eventually joining the Buddy Miles Express. He's lived the life every day since, and you can feel every mile of the road in every note he plays. LANCE LOPEZ live clip Lance Lopez released his first of six solo studio albums, First Things First, independently in 1998, a handful of guitar jam heavy albums for indie label Grooveyard Records in the early 2000's along with several live outings, more notably the 2015 release of “Live In NYC” which was recorded at Johnny Winter's 70 birthday party at BB King's Club in New York City. 2010 and 2012 saw the release of two albums (Salvation From Sundown (2010), Handmade Music (2012) produced by legendary producer/engineer Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Miller, Santana) 2014 saw Lopez join blues rock super group, Supersonic Blues Machine, as lead vocalist and guitarist and the release of two critically acclaimed albums (West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco (2015), Californisoul (2017) which featured ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Toto's Steve Lukather, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Eric Gales and many other notable guitarists. 2018 saw the release of “Tell The Truth”, one of Lopez's best and most mature albums to date and saw him tour North America extensively. For the last 3 decades he's toured extensively all over North America, throughout Europe and Eastern Europe, UK, and as far east as India and Jakarta, Indonesia. Lopez has opened for and toured with legendary icons such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, Rod Stewart, Whitesnake, Johnny Winter, and many others. The path to becoming a blues guitar legend is not an easy road, and even with mentors and friends like Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter, that road is long and fraught with the necessity of the literally thousands of clubs, endless nights, low wages, and long travels, all of which lead to the many temptations that make for distractions to get one through the day. Lopez was mentored by the best, and that means that along with the priceless lessons in the musical life from legends like Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Johnny Guitar Watson and Buddy Miles, also came lessons in drinking, drugging, late nights, the ravages of road food, and that side of the life that has broken so many.

NEON HIGHWAY BLUES, steering its 11 tracks with the confidence and assuredness of a veteran and the freshness of someone who's still in the process of discovery and refinement -- with the help of famous friends such as Eric Gales, Lance Lopez, Josh Smith and Hoey's 17-year-old son Ian Hoey. "I really wanted to make sure this album had a lot of blues on it," says Hoey, who self-produced NEON HIGHWAY BLUES and recorded it at his home studio in New Hampshire. “I kept sticking to the blues and listening to the classic players, all the Kings, Albert King, Freddie King, BB King, and finish with some Burger King. Hoey laughs” tried to get that to be a focus of this record -- and still put some songs for that my long-time, die-hard fans expect; instrumentals and some rockin' Zeppelin type stuff. There's definitely a variety here." Hoey's not kidding. NEON HIGHWAY BLUES kicks off with "Under the Rug," a funky, Jeff Beck style workout with Eric Gales. Up next is the dynamic 6:29 slow blues "Mercy of Love," with Josh Smith, with biting guitar solos, Hoey gets his Texas swing on for "Still Believe in Love" and settles into some roadhouse shuffles on "Your Kind of Love," and "Damned If I Do," is a big, stomping blues rocker with Lance Lopez trading licks. And those majestic instrumentals he mentioned? Check out "Almost Heaven," "Waiting on the Sun" and the cinematic title track, all showcases of virtuosity that complement the grittier fare around them. A very personal highlight for Hoey is "Don't Come Crying," an aching blues track that features one Ian Hoey, then only 16, planting his flag in the "family business." "I'm so blown away my son is actually on the record," Hoey says. "He loves the blues. I said, 'If it turns out good enough, I'll have you on the record, and he did a great job. After it was mixed and I listened to it. I totally forgot where he was playing and where I was playing. It brought tears to my eyes." NEON HIGHWAY BLUES "wasn't a quick record to make," nor was it easy, according to Hoey, and displays the care that came with the time spent on it. "I always say that's why they call it the blues, because it ain't easy," he notes. The album took about a year and a half, he estimates, much of it done during gaps in his heavy touring schedule. "I just kept going in and trying to come up with the right licks or the right lyrics, and some days it just wouldn't come," Hoey recalls. "It was really about staying in there and trying things, abandoning some ideas, going on to new ideas. There was a lot of that on this record. I'm kind of a stickler for making sure I'm happy with it -- even though I had people breathing down my neck to get it done."

While he gained great musical experience - he also picked up a nasty drug habit which would run him ragged for over 15 years… Lance also shares his story about getting hooked on drugs and his subsequent rehab and recovery, helped out by Musicares… And how the life he lives today being sober, is different from life before getting clean. All this and much more, in this very frank conversation with this amazing Texas blues guitarist...   Go to http://www.EveryoneLovesGuitar.com to get notified of future episodes

It's a holiday weekend in the US - that means a Roadhouse Rewind. From 2010, I hope you'll enjoy Roadhouse 300. I'll be back next week to start the holiday season in the The Roadhouse. A big thanks to all who have made the 300th Roadhouse possible – listeners, labels and artists. This milestone edition stretches things out with fewer songs but plus-size creativity. The Chris O'Leary Band, Mel Brown, Lance Lopez, Lucky Peterson, and Buddy Guy provide more than enough propulsion to move through the hour with toes tappin', hands slappin', and full-on chair-dancin'. There's another hour of the finest blues you never heard in the 300th Roadhouse.

Salvador Santana  is a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, composer, poet and activist. The son of ten-time Grammy-winning guitarist Carlos Santana and poet/author/activist Deborah Santana, his music roots reach back to his maternal grandfather, Saunders King, an icon of American blues and his paternal grandfather, violinist and mariachi bandleader Jose Santana. Salvador  began playing piano at the age of five and became comfortable with other instruments in high school.  In 1999, he collaborated with his father on composing the Grammy-winning track "El Farol" on the album Supernatural. He has recently teamed up with CASA in Action and DEC Artists to create a campaign to tell immigrant stories from across the country and drive voter registration and activism to reform immigration laws.   Ally Venable, lead vocalist and guitarist of the powerhouse blues rock Ally Venable Band, started young, singing in church a child.  It was only recently, as a protégé of Lance Lopez,  that she found her passions: the guitar, blues, and rock.  She formed the band and never looked back. The Ally Venable Band  has become a powerhouse in the Lone Star State and Ally was named the 2014 and 2015 East Texas Female Guitarist of the Year. Joined by bassist, Bobby Wallace and classically trained drummer Elijah Owings, it is easy to see why some people in the Texas blues community hear the future of blues when she plays.  Now on tour in Texas, we are proud to introduce her to an international audience.

Greetings AaA enthusiasts and welcome to yet another opportunity to take the episodic adventure that is the Amps and Axes Podcast. In this episode the guys make a mention of last week's Lance Lopez 'cast, chat a bit about last week's Summer NAMM Show in Nashvegas and talk a bit about a new acoustic guitar offering from Epiphone. Then there's unfortunately the acknowledgement of yet another couple losses in the musical world (this year seems to be exceptionally brutal). And then, on a brighter note, this week's guest. He is very much alive and well and has been doing the musical thing for many decades now, so do what it is you do when you listen and please help us welcome our guest of the week, Mr Joe Louis Walker.
