While we often touch on the contemporary songs of our own and subsequent generations in the show, we also like to drill into the performers and sounds that contributed to our musical heritage. The foundation of America's music is not just a single flavor. It is a melting pot of many from all corners: the British Isles, the African continent, the islands of the Caribbean, and points south and north. The resulting harmonies, topics, and musical celebrations have further woven themselves into the fabric of our culture. This week's show leans on some pieces that were suggested by a listener and this allowed me to take liberties when digging a bit deeper for the show. We'll hear from Pete Seeger, The Million Dollar Quartet, Buck Owens, Alison Krauss and Mississippi Fred McDowell. We'll also take in the American Songbag's In The Pines and then proceed down the river and over the hill in the show this week.

Black Spirituals, Field Hollers, and Slave Seculars celebrate Black American Traditional Music and Experience. This show is dedicated to sharing and raising awareness of folklife, songs, dance, scripture, lyrics, and everything related to black Spirituals, Field Hollers, and Slave secular expressions, as well as the coded songs of Black Spirituals that were maps and landmarks for escaping bondage. June 5th, I will be speaking with Eric Crawford, Associate Professor of Musicology, and Peter K. Siegal, Producer and American roots music archivist, about the June 14, 2024, Smithsonian Folkways release “The Complete Friends of Old-Time Music Concert” by Bessie Jones, John Davis & The Georgia Sea Island Singers with Mississippi Fred McDowell and Ed Young. The album is a live recording of a 1965 concert that captured the intersection of Black folk traditions and civil rights activism, produced and hosted by Folklorist Alan Lomax and recorded by Peter K. Siegal. The Liner notes, and essay are written by Eric Crawford, whose research focuses on the rich tradition of Gullah music. Crawford has also written books titled Gullah Spirituals: The Sound of Freedom and Protest in the South Carolina Sea Islands (2021) and Gullah Culture in America (March 2023). Together with Smithsonian Folkways, they have collaborated on presenting a significant album that conserves black expression while introducing these outstanding performances to new audiences. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jackdappabluesradio/message

Today on the program we present the story of the father of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues, Mississippi Fred McDowell. From humble beginnings, Fred was inspired from the likes of Charley Patton, his neighbor Eli “Booster” Green and the sounds he gathered from guitarists in Memphis, Mississippi and the Delta, and defined the often overlooked nuances of the blues. Like many of the great Southern pre-war blues guitarists born around the turn of the century, Fred was “discovered” by Alan Lomax in 1959, and continues to inspire slide guitarists to this day, despite not being a household name in the blues realm. Chris was a man possessed. “El Fanatico,” Ry Cooder called him. A song catcher, dedicated to recording the traditional, regional, down home music of America, his adopted home after his family left Germany at the close of WWII. Mance Lipscomb, Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Big Mama Thornton, Clifton Chenier, Rose Maddox, Flaco Jimenez… the list is long and mighty. Chris Strachwitz was a keeper. His vault is jam-packed with 78s, 33s, 45s, reel-to-reels, cassettes, videos, photographs — an archive of all manner of recordings. And an avalanche of lifetime achievement awards — from the Grammy's, The Blues Hall of Fame, The National Endowment for the Arts – for some 60 years of recording and preserving the musical cultural heritage of this nation through his label, Arhoolie Records. In honor of Chris Strachwitz The Kitchen Sisters reprise The Passion of Chris Strachwitz, produced for The Goethe Institute's Big Pond series. With interviews with Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. Also featuring selected interviews done by Chris Strachwitz with Howlin' Wolf and The Maddox Brothers and Rose. Produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva & Davia Nelson) with Nathan Dalton and Brandi Howell, mixed by Jim McKee. The Kitchen Sisters Present is part of the Radiotopia network from PRX.

Will Kallinderis aka Harpin' Will K joins Di Spillane this week to discuss his musical journey, a journey that has followed him from Ottawa, Edmonton Alberta, Vancouver, and since 2005 South Australia. Will Kallinderis aka 'Harpin' Will K' is a singer-songwriter who performs a lively mix of original roots, funk, and blues. Emerging in 2016 with his debut solo album Last Of The Singing Peace Chiefs, a collection of acoustic guitar-driven songs, full-throttled harmonica soloing, and backup harmony vocals. More recently he has been revisiting early influences to create a repertoire of raw ‘n' gritty stripped-back blues. Will's been performing on the local Adelaide scene as a soloist and in various projects since 2007. At 16, Will was inspired to pick up the harmonica after hearing the music of Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, and Bob Dylan. The following year he took up the guitar and was influenced by Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf), John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters to name a few. Will's soulful roots sound is a result of many years honing his skills as a regular busker on the streets of Edmonton, Alberta followed by performances in the local blues and folk scene. Over the years his musical influences expanded to include the sounds of R&B, folk, rock as well as Latin, funk, and world music. Will moved to Adelaide in 2005 and in 2007 he formed a power trio called Star Step Evolution with Mike Palmer on bass and Benjamin Gallasch on drums. Featuring a funky, bluesy, reggae style with plenty of harmonica soloing. The members parted ways in late 2009. Will continued gigging around town as a solo performer honing and evolving his singer-songwriter roots originals as well as building a repertoire of blues. In 2017 Will joined local slide guitarist Cal Williams Jr for several festival shows. He stepped in at late notice when Adelaide's blues icon Chris Finnen had to pull out of the Fringe show ‘A History Of Early Blues'. The success of the show led to Will joining Cal Williams Jr and Kory Horwood on double bass for the next two seasons. Will also joined Cal and Kory in Cal's project The Ukulele Blues Explosion featuring stripped-back possibilities with ukulele, bass, and harmonica. In 2018 Will formed The Young Sequoias with Matt Colyer on drums featuring upbeat guitar and amplified harmonica together with Matt's catchy rhythms that introduced new interpretations of Will's debut album along with a vast range of new songs drawing on roots, rock, jazz, soul, funk and electric delta blues. One of the highlights for the duo was the successful sold-out 2020 Fringe show, ‘Electric Delta – Blues Hits Big Town' celebrating the Blues from raw and gritty Mississippi to the refined urban sounds of Chicago, featuring popular classics by such artists as Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell and more. The Young Sequoias have taken a break and may remain dormant indefinitely. In the meantime, Will is focusing on recording his next solo album and considering teaching harmonica. We had the pleasure of interviewing Brad Barr over Zoom video! Brad Barr - the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of The Barr Brothers and The Slip - recetly released The Winter Mission, Barr's brand new instrumental solo guitar album through Secret City Records. For more than 20 years, Brad Barr has been counting the number 216. It's a mysterious number that seems to show up everywhere—from clocks and license plates to Ouija boards and receipts—and now it's also sewn the fabric of his new album, like the 216 stitches on a baseball. Inspired by artists like Caetano Veloso, Mississippi Fred McDowell, D'Gary, and John Frusciante, Barr set out to make music that was naked and unprocessed, but also occasionally loud—alive with a sense of wakeful intimacy. The number 216 was a constant theme. The guitarist first encountered the so-called "magic square" during a teenage acid trip; in the years since then it's become a talisman—one of the few areas where Barr feels mystical, sensing a genuine order in the universe. These songs pay tribute to that order—from 216's lofty mathematical and astrological properties to its function as an area-code (for Cleveland). Barr spent decades developing his visceral approach to the guitar, first with The Slip and then across three records with The Barr Brothers. The Winter Mission—the follow-up to The Fall Apartment, Barr's 2008 solo debut—had its origins in a commission from Michael Wolk, Artistic Director at New York City's All For One Theater. It "felt like a gift," Barr recalls—to have a sound he could explore all by himself, away from the road, during COVID's strange intermission. Brad Barr is the lead singer and songwriter of The Barr Brothers, a folk-Americana band that's been around for over a decade. They have toured with The War on Drugs, Calexico, Shakey Graves, and Patrick Watson. Their TV performances include The Late Show with David Letterman and CBS This Morning Saturday. Nat Myers is a songwriter from Kenton County, KY. A poet with an amazing voice, Myers will blow you away with folksy blues and talented pickin', an incredible acoustic blues player and singer, and uses this musical medium to tell his stories. His delivery follows in the footsteps of players like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi Fred McDowell and his favorite, Charlie Patton. Nat's music isn't pure; it's raw and rigid. But it's his unique sound that continues to make crowds across the country drop their jaws.
Prakash Slim grew up in poverty outside the town of Lalitpur, Nepal. Drawn to music since childhood, he traded a bicycle for a guitar and threw himself into learning and listening to blues and blues rock. By his early twenties he was in a blues, rock and instrumental band as well as working as a guitar instructor. An invitation to the Walden School of Music in San Francisco was a big break for Prakash, but then came the devastating Nepal earthquake of 2015. Work as a musician in Nepal was impossible during the earthquake aftermath, and to make matters worse, in 2017 Prakash fell seriously ill. During his convalescence he happened to scroll across the facebook group "Acoustic Guitar Pickers", and he completely changed musical directions; developing an obsession with Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and many of the other pre-war blues greats. They provided Prakash Slim both solace and as a way to continue his musical career. Although it is difficult for many to travel outside of Nepal, Prakash has connected with the online blues world in a big way! In recent years, he's garnered an impressive amount streaming/radio play, blues press coverage and great reviews of his music. His goal is to tour in America, Europe and South America-- his first destination? The Crossroads in Clarksdale MS, of course! Check out Prakash's original tunes "Living In Memory", and one sung in his native language "Corona Blues"-- he performs both in this video. Adam Sikora is a Polish harmonica player who completely by chance became obsessed with the pre-war harmonica styles of Sonny Terry, Johnny Woods and Billy Bizor. Luis (Gigi) de Cicco is an eclectic multi-instrumentalist from Benevento, Italy, who, like Adam, found a home in the thriving Berlin arts scene. Capo, acoustic guitar and fingerpicks in hand, Gigi has found his own blues groove by delving deep into the styles of Mississippi Fred McDowell, RL Burnside and other Hill Country masters. Adam and Gigi formed the duo Juke Joint Smokers in Berlin and started to record an electric record together, but decided to go acoustic. They have a great blues feel and mood and we look forward to their first recording. We also recommend their other bands; Adam's the leader of The Soul Thrivers, a collaboration with a Jamaican/UK based singer Dvora Davis and American/French guitarist Nick Morrison. Gig's band Caboose is an ambitious psychedelic/African/rock/blues gumbo that competed in the IBC in 2019. By the way, neither of these bands have a bass-- they both go for a raw, stripped down sound in their own way. This is an inspired duo and both Adam and Gigi are players to watch. WOW. Shirley Collins has led a wild full life! The British Folk singer, who helped bring about the 60's folk revival in Great Britain, is on Basic Folk talking about her new album Heart's Ease and her entire extraordinary career. Shirley also talks about her childhood, which occurred during World War II and started her love and connection with traditional folk songs. Her grandparents would sing to her and her sister Dolly during air raids to try and keep the girls calm. This watershed moment would define her love of sharing these songs and how it feels for Shirley to sing. She talks about her late sister Dolly, a brilliant musical arranger and frequent collaborator, and how her compositions matched up perfectly with Shirley's singing. Shirley was a part of the historical Alan Lomax Southern Journey recordings, where she assisted the folklorist in collecting recordings of traditional folk songs in the American South. A lot of those songs were familiar to Shirley as they came over to America from England hundreds of years ago. She talks about the musicians she met along the way including Mississippi Fred McDowell. After she returned, she sang and recorded music from about 1955 - 1979 and then stopped when she went through a terribly traumatic event and developed dysphonia. Recently, Shirley has returned to making albums, starting in 2016 with Lodestar and now with her latest just released. She is generous with her answers and is good natured about my ridiculous questions. Also, a very fun lightning round! I can't wait to have Shirley on again.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
DANNY BURNS is a red-headed, storytelling, hard-touring Irishman whose own voice is just as evocative as his songwriting. He grew up in the Irish county of Donegal surrounded by singers and instrumentalists receiving a first-class education in Irish folk music along the way. He kicked off his career as a traveling folksinger, logging shows on both sides of the Atlantic. He's been on the road ever since, sharpening a sound that mixes the folk traditions of his native Ireland with diverse American influences. ‘North Country' is Danny's new collaborative album filled with appearances by icons like Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, and Tift Merritt. REED TURCHI was raised in the Swannanoa valley of Western North Carolina and grew up playing piano, focusing on boogie woogie and New Orleans styles before becoming infatuated with slide guitar. While learned Hill Country Blues (RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Mississippi Fred McDowell) firsthand in North Mississippi, he's become a master of guitar driven blues that shapeshift seamlessly between acoustic slide, electric juke joint boogie, and the improvisational, groove-driven, massive sound of his band. Reed's eleventh album, ‘Midnight in Memphis' was recorded live at legendary Sun Studio featuring his Kudzu Choir band. WoodSongs Kid: Christian Gisborne is a sixteen-year-old indie rock & roll singer and songwriter from LA.
