Summary Episode 25: Jon Gomm is a singer songwriter considered to be one of the world's true virtuoso guitarists possessing a unique style most elite musicians consider revolutionary. Jon was born and continues to live in the North of England. His songs are driven by his use of one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and twisting melodies all at the same time with no external effects. The emphasis remains on his soulful vocals and songwriting with his original material influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead. His live shows combine deeply personal performances allied with a natural wit, with a once seen, never forgotten two-handed guitar style, both physical and complex, producing sounds people can barely believe are coming from a humble acoustic guitar. https://vimeo.com/678255603 (Timestamps are for audio version of the podcast.) 00:25 Introducing Jon Gomm 04:07 Jon recalls the gig with Adam 05:18 Graceland by Paul Simon - one of Jon's earliest music inspirations 07:00 The Jeff Beck Influence 07:25 John describes his early frustration with electric 19:09 Jon talks about playing covers 20:51 Jon talks about the current pop music paradigm & asks should one compose? 25:34 Musical Segment: Jon plays his own composition "Passionflower" 32:20 Jon talks about his approach with unconventional tunings, techniques and percussion 33:34 His excitement with novel techniques - slide, flamenco percussion 34:13 Jon talks about the "Bukka White" style 34:57 Jon talks about playing electric guitar in bands at 13 35:29 Jon discovers Laurence Juber and Michael 41:31 Jon talks about gigging as a working country, metal and jazz player 43:34 How Jon is currently connecting with music emotionally 46:24 His new album which he describes as "quite emotionally intense" 52:59 Jon talks about doing music arrangements 1:02:46 Jon's best advice for every guitar player! 1:08:24 Jon's "last words" for the interview 1:08:45 Ending credits & podcast contact info Jon's Links Jon's Website Jon's Youtube Jon's Facebook Jon's Instagram Jon's Twitter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY7GnAq6Znw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcmecyoZgjo Never Miss an Episode - Subscribe NOW!

In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

In 1940, bluesman Bukka White recorded "Parchman Farm Blues," a lament about being imprisoned in the infamous Mississippi State Penitentiary (2:30). Insightful lyrics, impassioned vocals, great slide guitar, and some nice accompaniment from Washboard Sam to boot! Even though he denied it, jazzman Mose Allison adapted White's song in 1958, titling it "Parchman Farm" and giving the song a controversial punchline (43:43). His version was an unlikely dance hit amongst the British Mods, with an insistent piano riff, solid rhythm section backing, and lots of hipster irony. In 1966, The Blues Breakers took the song on, with John Mayall's harmonica in place of the piano, another great rhythm section (including future Fleetwood Mac-er John McVie on bass), and Eric Clapton in the back, reading his Beano comic book. Finally, back to the States to hear The Traits,  with Johnny Winter, who shreds on guitar and vocals mere months before he finds fame at Woodstock (1:38:59).  Drink some wine, sit on Number 9, and open your textbooks ...

Riley “Blues Boy” King (1925-2015) was born into deep poverty in Jim Crow Mississippi. Wrenched away from his sharecropper father, B.B. lost his mother at age ten, leaving him more or less alone. Music became his emancipation from exhausting toil in the fields. Inspired by a local minister's guitar and by the records of Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker, encouraged by his cousin, the established blues man Bukka White, B.B. taught his guitar to sing in the unique solo style that, along with his relentless work ethic and humanity, became his trademark. In turn, generations of artists claimed him as inspiration, from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to Carlos Santana and the Edge. KING OF THE BLUES presents the vibrant life and times of a trailblazing giant. Witness to dark prejudice and lynching in his youth, B.B. performed incessantly (some 15,000 concerts in 90 countries over nearly 60 years)—in some real way his means of escaping his past. Several of his concerts, including his landmark gig at Chicago's Cook County Jail, endure in legend to this day. His career roller-coasted between adulation and relegation, but he always rose back up. At the same time, his story reveals the many ways record companies took advantage of artists, especially those of color. Daniel de Visé has interviewed almost every surviving member of B.B. King's inner circle—family, band members, retainers, managers, and more—and their voices and memories enrich and enliven the life of this Mississippi blues titan, whom his contemporary Bobby “Blue” Bland simply called “the man.”

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Rory BlockRory Block grew up in New York's Greenwich Village at the height of the "folk music revival", a time when a number of the founding giants of traditional country blues were being rediscovered and brought through New York City to perform. At the age of 14, already an accomplished guitarist, Rory was able to meet and play music with Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Fred McDowell, Reverend Gary Davis, Skip James and Bukka White. Rory's father, sandal maker and country fiddle player Allan Block, founded the Allan Block Sandal Shop on West 4th Street, which quickly became a central hub for many luminaries of the folk and blues world. A young neighbor named Bob Dylan, fellow Village residents like John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur, John Hammond and many others frequented Block's famed Saturday afternoon jam sessions, which filled the shop and spilled out onto the sidewalks. This incredible time period formed the basis of almost all of Rory's formative musical inspiration.

In this video, we're looking at the 6 songs from Bob Dylan's first album that launched his career and where he drew his inspiration from. While my sources say he wasn't a song thief, I think you'll be able to draw your own conclusions after this video... Bob Dylan is definitely one of the most influential singer-songwriters that ever lived. I mean, the guy has a Nobel Prize in literature. But if we look at the beginning of his career, to the very first set of songs he recorded and started selling commercially, how many of them were covers? I'm not saying that just because Bob Dylan did covers that he means he stole. My point is more nuanced: did he give credit? Did he pay homage to those folk heroes who he is standing on today? To help understand, we're looking at the 6 songs from Bob Dylan's self-titled first studio album. #6: "Song to Woody"Bob Dylan was a huge fan of folk musician, artist, and writer Woody Guthrie. In fact, Bob Dylan went so far as to style himself after Woody Guthrie. In paying tribute to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan wrote "Song to Woody," one of the few originals on the self-titled album. Funny enough, the melody for "Song to Woody" is directly lifted from Woody Guthrie's song "1913 Massacre." Did Bob Dylan use the same melody to pay homage to Woody Guthrie? Or, did Bob Dylan decide to lift the melody because it was just that good? Let me know what you think in the comments! #5: "Highway 51 Blues"Written by a blues pianist by the name of Curtis Jones, "Highway 51 Blues," is another song Bob Dylan covered on his self-titled album. Curtis Jones' vocals and piano playing is spectacular on this song and sounds drastically different from the Bob Dylan cover. I love listening to an original tune that I've only heard covered. "Highway 51 Blues" is no exception. I always thought Bob Dylan wrote this song, but I'm happy to know that the original Curtis Jones song is just as awesome and inspiring — even if it is on piano! #4: "You're No Good"A one-man band rockin' a twelve-string, Jesse Fuller wrote "You're No Good." Like my experience with "Highway 51 Blues," I came to love and appreciate the original after I started doing this research. While I can't feature "You're No Good" performed by Bob Dylan or Jesse Fuller due to copyright, I can feature Jesse Fuller's "Railroad Blues." He is one incredible, driving singer with a classic acoustic blues sound. #3: "In My Time of Dyin'" While Bob Dylan's cover of this song is stunning, if you trace it all the way back to the beginning...it's even more stunning. The earliest recording of this song comes from Blind Willie Johnson. Blind Willie Johnson has a voice that just sends shivers down your spine. I've always loved his voice and I know you NEED to check out his performance of "In My Time of Dyin'." Bob Dylan's version is definitely the neater, cleaner, the more commercial sound of what Blind Willie Johnson created and passed on. #2: "Fixin' to Die"It was sometime in college, when I was maybe 18 or 19, that I first heard this song covered by Bob Dylan. When I heard it, it sounded like Bob Dylan transformed into a completely different person. His singing was just unlike the other songs he played. As I came back to this song, I discovered that this song was written by Bukka White. I was stunned because Bukka White is such an incredible played that you NEED to check out. With a distinct style and voice, Bukka White is clearly being channeled by Bob Dylan in his cover of "Fixin' to Die." Let me know what you think in the comments though! #1: "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"Written by Blind Lemon Jefferson, this song has become a standard in the American songbook. So many artists have covered this song over the years, and some better than others. To give you a sense of Jefferson's style, I played "One Dime Blues" for you. While Bob Dylan's version of "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" is similar to Blind Lemon Jefferson's, it's just a different version altogether. So...is Bob Dylan a song thief? No. But follow me down this train of thought: Bob Dylan choosing these songs was a way of him simultaneously honoring and making his mark on the folk world. Wow! This was the first podcast we've gone into a little "Star Struck"! You not only get a conversation with the Rev. Peyton, but Washboard "Breezy" Peyton and Maxwell Senteney also joined in on the fun. How do you go from the being the fan to being the interviewer? Have fun finding out the answer to that question with us. We talk some things music and LOTS about fishing. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band has built its reputation the long, slow, hard way. After 12 years of playing as many as 300 shows each year, Rev. Peyton, the world’s foremost country blues finger-style picker, along with the biggest little band in the country has pieced together one of the most dedicated followings out there. With all the power of a freight train, the Big Damn Band is known for its live shows. Rev. Peyton delivers guitar pyrotechnics the old fashioned way — ten fingers, a 6 string and an amp cranked at full tilt. In the country blues style, he plays the bass with his thumb, while picking the lead with his fingers at the same time. When he lifts the guitar behind his head to play there’s nothing but skill and 16 gauge nickel strings to make the sounds coming out of the speakers. Beside him on stage are just two other people. His wife, “Washboard” Breezy Peyton playing with all the nuance and percussive power of a New Orleans drum line, and keeping the train moving is Max Senteney on a lean drum kit including a 5 gallon maple syrup bucket. Together they play Peyton’s wildman country blues that’s as much ZZ Top as it is Bukka White. The 6th Meridian Hops Farm show blew us away and we can't wait to see them again. If you haven't checked out a show you need to do it!!! Seriously!!!! We've included the link to their website. You can find everything Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band related there...including their own podcast! Special thanks to these guys for taking the time out of their busy schedule to sit down with us http://www.bigdamnband.com/ https://www.facebook.com/6thMeridianHops/ http://www.tedandalicemiller.com/

The Blues Foundation Podcast - Season 1: Blues Hall of Fame  Booker T Washington White, aka Bukka White, was many things. Like most African Americans born into the oppressive, Jim Crow era in the Mississippi Delta, he grew up sharecropping and picking cotton for plantation owners. He also drove mule teams. Bukka was a wandering Delta nomad, a professional boxer, a preacher, he played professional baseball in the Negro Leagues, and he even spent time working on a chain-gang. But he's best known for playing the blues. His first instrument was the fiddle. He'd play for community dances on the plantation. History tells us that while performing at the Dockery Plantation, Bukka met Charlie Patton, Father of The Delta Blues, who became his friend and mentor. He soon graduated to guitar, mastered the bottleneck, and developed a completely unique sound of his own. Before long, he was touring the south and recording as “Washington White, The Singing Preacher.” Some of these early sides feature Memphis Minnie singing with Bukka. Bukka relocated to Memphis and in the early 40's invited his nephew, Riley B King to come up from Itta Benna, MS to live with him. Riley, of course, became BB King, King of the Blues. In the early 60's, white, folk artist Bob Dylan recorded White's song, “Fixin' To Die Blues” for his debut album and it introduced him to a global audience. Bukka became a major part of the 60's blues revival, performing to audiences around the world. This is his story. Bukka White inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1990.

Hi I am Mijaelle and in this Heart -Beats video series we chat to Mike Meiring the founder, lead guitarist and singer for Highway Jam, a blues rock / jazz fusion band. He had reasonable success in Durban and Johannesburg in the 1980s as lead guitarist with popular Durban band The Street Rockers, with their song “Don’t cry without emotion” topping the Radio 5 charts in the late 1980’s. Mike performed in a show called “Déjà Vu”, a tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, after which Highway Jam was born. Highway Jam initially comprised drummer Steve De Kock and bassist Donovan Thatcher. The early ’90s saw the release of the band’s first album, “2 B Played Loud”. Apart from the club gigs, Highway Jam played at various festivals, including Rustlers, Splashy Fen and Oppie Koppie - until 1997, when the band broke up. Mike carried on under the Highway Jam banner with Kai Horsthemke and Reuben Samuels. This ushered in a creative, synergistic period, with funk, jazz and world music influences. In 1998, Highway Jam's “Grasslands” project was recorded and released followed by “Always Being” in 1999. By 2000, a stable line-up of Mike, Ekkie, Kai and drummer Brett Collings saw the band revisiting their eclectic mix of jazz and world music influences, leaning towards hip-hop grooves. Highway Jam was voted best jazz band, regionally and nationally, in the prestigious “Old Mutual Jazz Encounters”. In 2003, the band recorded another album, “Highway Jam Goes Wild”. Highway Jam collaborated with Kathy Raven, one of the band’s all-time favourite singers. Kai, Reuben and Mike released the album “The Road Less Travelled” in 2017. Topics discussed in part 2 are: 1 - The origins of the name Highway Jam 2 - Playing different genres opens you up to new audiences - Garage grunge to blues rock and jazz fusion 3 - Jazz fusion includes complex arrangements and requires technical proficiency. The grasslands album has songs with various time signatures 4 - Is it important to create emerging sounds and to be influenced by your environment. For example the birth of Delta Blues (from Mississippi Blues creating Chicago Blues) 5 - Songwriting can be a cathartic process like Bukka White's song Parchman Farm Blues - so have you had a tough experience that influenced you musically? 6 - Is it important to leave a listener with a positive feeling regardless of the genre or subject matter? 7 - Music for Music sake - being creative outside of the box and that has deeper meaning 8 - Was composing The Road Less Travelled a freeing experience? www.highwayjam.co.za www.facebook.com/HeartBeatsSA www.facebook.com/MusicalMuseDevelopment soundcloud.com/heartbeatssa iTunes - Heart-Beats SA Music Industry podcast Visit www.musicalmuse.co.za www.instagram.com/mijaelle twitter - @Mijaelle

The Blues Foundation Podcast - Season 1: Blues Hall of Fame    We continue this series with The King of The Blues, BB King. Born in 1925 on a cotton plantation near Itta Benna, MS,  Riley Benjamin King found his muse early in the sacred sounds of rural, Pentecostal church. First given a guitar by his mother's cousin, famed blues man Bukka White, King soon traded the cruel world of cotton plantations and sharecropping for the excitement and opportunities of life in Memphis and on Beale Street. Never has it the phrase "and the rest is history" been more true. One of the most important and influential people in the pantheon of American music, BB and his guitar Lucille will live on forever. This is his story.  B.B. King inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980.

Tom Holland is joined by Dr Lucy Robinson from the University of Sussex to consider jazz in the trenches, woad and the women behind the Notting Hill Carnival. Helen Castor meets Dr Michael Hammond, Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, to hear about Blues in the Trenches. Dr Hammond argues that 'the blues' as a musical tradition was brought to the trenches of the Great War by African-American soldiers from all parts of the US and they shared different performance styles and traditions - creating cross-pollinations that foreshadow the country blues recordings of the 1920s and 30s by Charley Patton, Furry Lewis, Bukka White, Geechie Wiley, Ma Rainey, Elvey Thomas, Blind Willie Johnson and notable others. Closer to home, on the banks of the River Thames, Iszi Lawrence traces the origins of today's craze for tattoos and body art back to the Celts, when she learns to make woad. The blues was built on slavery and the fact that a man was taken from his family and homeland against his will. Slavery happened for centuries.
