I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Dr. Wendy Morrison. I've been mildly obsessed with Iron Age hillforts ever since I first walked the Ridgeway National Trail back in 2016. My obsession only deepened when I walked the trail a second time in 2020, and I was inspired to visit all the hillforts near the Ridgeway. I feel such an indescribable connection to hillforts. Is it the sensation that I'm walking in the shadows of ancient people? Is it something spiritual? Dr. Morrison and I discuss this and more. I hope this episode inspires you to get outdoors and visit your local hillforts or other ancient sites. About Dr. Wendy Morrison Dr. Wendy Morrison currently works for the Chilterns Conservation Board as Project Manager of the NLHF funded Beacons of the Past Hillforts project. She also is Senior Associate Tutor for Archaeology at the Oxford University Dept for Continuing Education. She is Chair of the Hillfort Study Group and President of the Marlow Archaeology Group. She has over a decade's excavation experience in Southern Britain, the Channel Islands, and India and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Setting out to give voice to forgotten lowland landscapes of Monmouthshire overlooked by visitors, plodcast host Fergus instead get lost as the little-used footpaths have disappeared or been blocked. With ravens and skylarks for company, he finds that the countryside can sometimes be a frustrating place to explore on foot. Back in the studio, we meet Jack Cornish, Head of Paths for the Ramblers, to discuss what can be done when footpaths go missing… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Danebury is one of Britain's best-excavated hillforts. Amongst the ramparts and roundhouses were found scores of grain pits containing dozens of bodies. Many had the tell-tale signs of post-mortem decapitation, potential evidence of a much mythologised Celtic headhunting cult. This episode focuses on the society and culture of the early and middle Iron Age. We talk about warfare, politics, economics and the first hints of a religion we call Druidism. ***Talk to me: oldbonespodcast@gmail.com---Support me at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/bonesandstuff---Join the community on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oldbonespodcast ---Keep up to date on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oldbones_podcast/---oldbones.co.uk
Clare Balding heads for the Clwyd Hills in North Wales as she joins the county's Archaeologist, Fiona Gale, to find out more about the many Iron Age hill forts that are so prevalent along the range. They start at Moel Arthur , walking along to Penycloddiau, one of the largest sites. They are joined by two of Fiona's colleagues. David Shiel and Helen Mrowiec, all three of whom are passionate about the area and the leisure opportunities it offers. While they all discuss the marks left on the landscape by past generations, Clare and her companions become united in their hatred of a twenty first century scar, the plastic dog poo bag, filled and left hanging on branches or in bushes. Clare is now on a mission to eradicate these eyesores from the countryside. You can follow the walk on Explorer no 265 Clwydian Range/Bryniau Clwyd. Starting grid ref , SJ146657 Producer Lucy Lunt.

History of the English Castle Many English castles were built of stone during the Medieval era. But the history of the English castle goes back much further! Exploring the History of the English Castle takes us as far back to the Neolithic Period - to Stone Age History! Understanding the History of the word 'castle' The word 'castle' is derived from the Latin words castellum, meaning fortress, and castrum meaning a ortified place. The castle can be defined as the following: "A safe place against intrusion or invasion" Another definition is: "A large fortified (strengthened)building " The history of the English Castle can date back to the time when people started to live in settled communities – which was the Stone Age over 7000 years ago! The History of the English Castle becomes clearer! When looking at the History of the English Castle we need to look for people who worked together to create, or build, a safe place to live against invasion! This would apply to the people living in England during the Neolithic Period, the Stone Age (7000 years ago) then on to the people of the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Romans and finally on to the Medieval era. By the time we reach the history of the Renaissance period (14th to 17th century)the castle was used as a symbol of wealth and power rather than a necessary safe place against invasion! At this point in time and history the castle was replaced with the 'Palace', a large or splendid residence. The History of the English Castle - The Stone Age ( 3000 - 1800 BC ) We can travel back in the History of the English Castle to discover very old buildings like Stonehenge. The History of the English Castle - The Bronze Age ( 1800 - 600 BC ) We look to Bronze Age period of history to discover the Hillforts of England, the biggest being Maiden Castle The History of the English Castle - The Iron Age and the Romans ( 600 BC - 400 AD ) The Hillforts were developed even further during the history of the Iron Age and then the Romans invaded England and made structures such as the massive Hadrian's Wall and the Roman Forts The History of the English Castle The Dark Ages, also know as Anglo-Saxon England ( 400 AD - 1066 AD ) The Fall of the Roman Empire led to a time in the history of England when the Celts of England were invaded by the Scots, the Welsh, the Saxons and the Vikings. A new National Defence system was established by Alfred the Great by the formation of fortified towns called 'Burhs' (later changed to Burghs then Boroughs) The Dark Ages - Alfred the Great - the Burhs. The History of the English Castle The Medieval Period also known as the Middle Ages ( 1066 - 1500 ) The Norman Invasion heralded the Medieval period, or the Middle Ages. The Normans introduced the wooden Motte and Bailey castles which were immediately followed by the construction of stone castles and Keeps such as the Tower of London in the History of the English Castle - . The Medieval Kings of England went on to build the magnificent Windsor Castle and Warwick Castle. The English King Edward I conquered Wales where he constructed massive fortifications called Concentric castles such as Conwy Castle, Harlech Castle and Caernarvon Castle.
