What if the symptoms your body was sending you were trying to tell you something your mind had not yet figured out how to hear?In this episode of the Let's Talk Brain Health! Podcast, Dr. Krystal Culler makes space for a story. Because at the heart of brain health is not just the science— it is the lived experience. The hard seasons. The wisdom that only comes from having walked through something yourself and come out the other side with something worth sharing.Nora Rodden is the Founder and CEO of Nervana, an AI-powered digital health company helping people with chronic symptoms explore the psychological and emotional factors that may be contributing to how they feel. But before the company and the Harvard MBA, Nora spent years navigating chronic back pain following a car accident, debilitating GI symptoms, and insomnia — searching desperately for answers that conventional medicine could not give her. What she eventually discovered changed everything. And she has dedicated her career to making sure others do not have to search as long as she did. This is her brain care story. What You'll Learn in This Episode

▶️ Connect with Richard on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richardatherton-firsthuman/   What if many chronic symptoms - pain, IBS, migraines, fatigue, insomnia - aren't caused by damage in the body, but by patterns in the brain?   In this episode of Being Human, Richard Atherton speaks with Nora Rodden, CEO and co-founder of the health app Nervana. After being hit by a car during university, Nora developed chronic back pain that persisted for five years despite countless treatments and no obvious lasting damage in her body. Later, severe digestive issues and insomnia followed.   Everything changed when she joined a clinical trial exploring neuroplastic pain, the idea that the brain can learn and sustain physical symptoms long after an injury has healed.   Through mind-body techniques including journaling, somatic awareness and visualisation, Nora eliminated her pain and restored her sleep.   Her experience led her to build Nervana, an AI-guided program designed to help people retrain their brain-body response and recover from chronic symptoms. We discuss: Facing the triple whammy of chronic pain, GI symptoms and insomnia The "medical" trial that changed her life The drug-free approach that cured her symptoms in 3 months Her ground-breaking providing relief from pain Should Advil carry a warning? Your nervous system learned danger. It can learn safety too. In this episode, Peter Fenger sits down with Nora Rodden, CEO and co-founder of Nervana, a science-based mobile app helping people regulate their nervous systems and reclaim their lives from chronic pain. After a life-altering car accident left her suffering from chronic pain, GI issues, and insomnia for over five years, Nora didn't find relief through injections, surgery, or nerve ablation. She found it through neuroscience. A clinical trial at Harvard Business School introduced her to the power of mind-body therapy, and effectively rewired her brain's alarm system. Now, drawing on her background in biotech and her training as a certified yoga teacher, she's on a mission to bring these evidence-based neuroplasticity tools out of the research lab and into the hands of millions. In this conversation, Nora takes us inside her recovery, the science behind chronic pain, and how Nervana is helping users move from a chronic state of fight-or-flight back to one of lasting internal safety, one small, powerful experiment at a time.   For more information about Nervana, please visit: https://www.trynervana.com To download Nervana from the Apple App store, please visit: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nervana-chronic-symptom-coach/id6754898332 Listeners can save $50 on their subscription with BHT50. In this episode of Ditch the Labcoat, Dr. Mark Bonta does something different. For the first time on the podcast, he speaks with a former patient.Nora Rabah Rodden joins the show not as a clinician, but as someone who lived for years with debilitating symptoms that medicine couldn't explain or fix. Despite normal tests and repeated reassurance, her pain, GI symptoms, fatigue, and nervous system distress persisted. What she encountered instead was a gap in care. Not a lack of effort, but a lack of framework.Nora shares how learning about neuroplasticity and nervous system patterning finally gave her symptoms context. Not imagined. Not psychological. Learned, reinforced, and reversible. That experience became the foundation for why she later co-founded Nervana.Together, they explore why so many patients are dismissed once serious disease is ruled out, how threat signaling and conditioned responses can keep the body stuck in symptoms, and why telling patients “nothing is wrong” is often the most harmful message of all. The conversation breaks down the science of neuroplastic recovery in plain language, while staying honest about its limits and responsibilities. This episode is about what happens when medicine runs out of explanations, and what becomes possible when we stop treating unexplained symptoms as a dead end and start treating the nervous system as something that can learn, adapt, and heal.Nora's Link : https://www.trynervana.com/Episode Takeaways 1. Patient Experience Matters: Normal tests do not equal normal lives. Symptoms can persist even when disease is ruled out.2. Neuroplastic Symptoms Are Real: Learned nervous system patterns can drive pain, GI distress, fatigue, and insomnia without structural damage.3. “Nothing Is Wrong” Is Harmful: Reassurance without explanation often deepens fear, confusion, and isolation.4. Symptoms Can Be Learned and Unlearned: The brain adapts quickly, for better or worse, and those patterns are reversible.5. This Is Not Psychosomatic: Neuroplastic recovery is grounded in neuroscience, not imagination or positive thinking.6. Awareness Changes Identity: When patients stop identifying with symptoms, recovery often begins.7. Recovery Is Gradual, Not Dramatic: Progress usually looks subtle, steady, and cumulative rather than sudden.8. Lived Experience Can Build Better Care: Nora's recovery is why Nervana exists, to close the gap medicine often leaves behind.Episode Timestamps04:18 – Why This Episode Is Different: The First Patient Voice08:36 – When Tests Are Normal but Symptoms Are Not13:09 – The Gap Between Disease and Dysfunction18:52 – Neuroplasticity Explained Without the Jargon24:35 – Why “Nothing Is Wrong” Can Be Harmful30:13 – How the Nervous System Learns Symptoms36:56 – What Recovery Actually Looks Like in Practice43:14 – Turning Lived Experience Into a Care FrameworkDISCLAMER >>>>>>    The Ditch Lab Coat podcast serves solely for general informational purposes and does not serve as a substitute for professional medical services such as medicine or nursing. Follow us on YouTube---------Today, we have a great episode with Joe Rodden from Lydian. And we are talking all things eFuels and their story. Lydian uses Co2, Water, and abundant Green Energy to create eFuels/SAF. And because of their flexible run method, they can do it profitably, consistently. In the recent past there has been a huge demand for SAF that has been hard for major airlines to procure. In part because the technology was not there, but mostly because there were no plants up and operating. SAF plants are assumed to look like chemical production facilities… ie: always on. This way the cost of the investment is paid back soon. Lydian made sure they used inexpensive materials to create their system. And they made it to start and stop whenever there is excess electricity being produced. It's a game changer. On top of this, Joe has a great story. A story that I'm sure you'll enjoy on today's episode. California's Central Coast is the ancestral homeland of indigenous California tribes including the Chumash and Salinan peoples. For years, the Northern Chumash have been working to create a new marine sanctuary. If the federal government approves that designation this summer, California would be home to the first national marine sanctuary nominated by, and named after, an indigenous tribe. It's the culmination of decades of tribal conservation work. And, as reporter Benjamin Purper tells us, it's also the legacy of a father and daughter. Later, we talk to professional rock climber Beth Rodden who has conquered some of the most treacherous climbs in the world. She was the first woman to complete two routes up Yosemite's famous El Capitan, with no gear helping to pull her up. But despite her success, she's battled raging self-doubt and multiple injuries. Rodden v R - A Discussion About Costs In Criminal Proceedings

It is sometimes said in the law that nothing generates hard work and legal ingenuity more than a costs application.  This week the wigs examine a recent decision that was keenly awaited by the criminal law community in NSW. Rodden v R 2023 a decision of the nsw court of criminal appeal. Mr. Rodden was acquitted of murder and his lawyers sought a certificate under the costs in criminal cases act that would have allowed legal aid nsw, who funded his defence, to recover substantial costs incurred in the trial. The first instance judge refused the application, holding that the Act only allowed a certificate where the individual accused had personally incurred costs. This was contrary to the long standing understanding and functioning of the act and in tension with high court authority that states the legally aided status of an accused is generally disregarded in costs matters. The decision was appealed and the decision set aside with the court holding it was no bar to an application being granted that an applicant had not personally incurred the costs. As said, the judgment was keenly awaited. Legal Aid had at stake its institutional interest in recovering such costs certificates and many lawyers had at stake a direct financial interest, because legally aided lawyers recieve a significant uplift in fees in legally aided matters when they secure such a certificate. Unsurprisingly the case was a well argued matter and the judgment is an interesting journey through appellate jurisdiction in NSW and the policy issues at play in costs in criminal proceedings.
