Our manager this week is an old friend of the show. He won the Vase at Wembley, won hearts with this approach to those working with him and won a place in history in his latest role managing a club looking to rise back up to the Football League from their current Step 5 rank. Dave McNabb is just two weeks into the role at Bury FC but already you can sense the impact it has had on him and the potential he knows the club has. Our Chairman this week is another old friend of the show. Another FA Vase winner at Wembley, he's hoping his club can replicate and go further their successes in recent years in the FA Trophy this weekend as they commence their part in this season's competition in the Third Qualifying round.. When he was first involved in the club as a player they were a Step 7 side. Now they are a Step 3 side with aspirations to reach the top in non league. Ken Beattie of Morpeth Town is always good value and that's what he's always trying to drive through at his club The Newspaper journalist is our own Jon Couch Executive Editor at the Non League paper. A big news week, a big week on the managerial merry-go-round and plenty of big reasons flagged up to buy this weekend's Non League Paper.

Graeme Rendall returns to tell us the story behind the airfield at RAF Morpeth. In World War Two, RAF Morpeth was extremely important to Bomber and Coastal Commands, as the station was home to an Air Gunners School which trained airmen how to shoot effectively whilst in mid-air. Trained gunners were constantly in demand and often in short supply. Many of the pilots of the training aircraft based at Morpeth were from other Allied nations and Graeme gives us a really interesting view of operations at the airfield. Post-war, like many airfields, it lost its status and faded away with only relics remaining today. Graeme also gives us an insight to his other three Northumberland airfield books, from air crashes to storage facilities. The remarkable life of 94 year old Olive Roberts: orphaned aged 8 in wartime northeast England before finding true love and embarking on unexpected adventures #129

Nicole Bremner

EP129: Olive recently celebrated her 94th birthday and is still in fine form. Her active mind and unfussy approach to life is refreshing in people of any age, not least those in their 10th decade. She narrates her story in exactly the same way, and even when tragedy strikes - for example the loss of a dear cousin and step-sister in a car accident - she is able to see the bigger picture. This is a lively and spirited account of a long life lived to the full. Olive's story is a remarkable one. Beginning in the north east of England in the late 1920s, her life encompassed the aftermath of the First World War, the upheavals for Word War Two and the unexpected post war opportunity to travel and see the world. Born in Morpeth, Northumberland, in March 1928. Her parents had suffered the hardships of a working class upbringing but at the time of her birth were happy and settled into family life. This was all to change with the death of her father, who died in 1934 of TB, the result of a chest weakened by a gas attack during World War One. Her mother married again, but after just two years she died while giving birth to twins. These children were adopted and Olive was left as an orphan. As Olive's story unfolds, interspersed from extracts from her husband Ron's account of his war years and subsequent word for GCHQ, her resilience and optimism shine through, even as she moves away from her beloved north east to explore the exotic shores of Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Mediterranean. Her account is humorous and knowledgeable, casting lift on the constraints of the 1930s, the fear and exhilaration of the war years and, eventually, the chase to see the world and become immersed in cultures that a person of her background would otherwise have little access to. True to the form of so many of our region's most successful property hosts, Newcastle-based Sheriden Rhodes is a wildly talented multi-tasker. As a creative child who yearned to become a journalist, she went on to do exactly that, spending her young adult years cutting her teeth working for the local newspaper before ultimately branching out as a freelance travel writer. Since then, she has written for some of the country's most celebrated media including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, QANTAS Magazine, Good Weekend and The Robb Report. In more recent times, Sheriden and her husband Tom, along with daughter Ella, purchased, renovated and styled a potential-filled cottage in the as-yet relatively undiscovered NSW Hunter Valley hamlet of Morpeth, not far from Newcastle. Now known as the River Haus and having been open for guest stays for coming up to a year, Sheriden has repeatedly drawn on her professional background to secure a coveted array of press for the property, including a feature in Country Style's recently published 'Dream Stays' magazine, House&Garden and more. As I predicted, my chat with Sheriden a couple of weeks ago was a super enjoyable one that I know you'll get a lot out of. Please enjoy.

Hello to you listening in Morpeth, Northumberland, North East England!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories from Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. In January of this year my story friend and galpal Michelle Desreux encouraged me to submit an application to the Podca$h competition supporting small, independent podcasts with cool ideas. Applications were judged on 6 criteria including: creativity; compelling topics; suitability of the host; likelihood of success; and strength of endorsements or “Love Letters” submitted by the podcast's listeners. And guess what? Stories From Women Who Walk is one of the lucky winners of sponsorship and cash out of some 3,000 applications! How did I do it? I didn't. You did. With all the Love Letters you submitted to the judges endorsing this podcast.    I owe this honor to you and each of you who gave me a hand up. Each One Lift One is how we roll here!Story Prompt: When has someone given you a hand up that's made the difference in your life? How did you pay it forward? Write that story!Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! First up, out-going Chairman James Court at Street FC who have announced their intention to take demotion at the end of this season after just one term in the Southern League. Not due to financial or ground grading reasons but for the sheer lack of bodies to take the club forward and run it. A tough decision to make but one he and his fellow committee members hope will help ensure a long-term future for the club. Next up, non league journalist Mark Carruthers with an update on what has been going on at Gateshead in recent weeks and what he hopes will come about int he coming weeks before the new season is upon us. As well as the gloom hanging over Gateshead howeever, Mark has also been covering the Championship success at Morpeth Town and the Northern League success of Dunston UTS and offers his insight as to how well they may do next season, each a step higher. Rounding off, Alex Narey Editor of The Non League Paper takes a look ahead to the final handful of games in the National League and predicts the Easter programme could decide it. He also offers insight into those who have finished in the bottom four in the National League and wonders what will happen to those relegated.

The Daily Gardener

It’s decision time in the garden. What will your projects be this year? Often, we have no idea if our dreams for our gardens will come true.  Gardeners may dream bigger dreams than emperors, but we can often get stuck, too. We put plants in the wrong spot. We buy the wrong thing. We spend too much money. We over do. But, every now and then we get it completely right.  I waited for years to put paths in around my front garden. Why did I wait so long. No reason really.  But, once it was in, I knew it was the perfect thing my garden had been missing. Whatever you’re dreaming of and planning for your garden this season, I hope you get it completely right.   Brevities On this day in 1847, Birkenhead Park opened to "great rejoicing and festivity, and in the evening there was a gorgeous display of fire-works. The day at Birkenhead, and indeed partly at Liverpool, was observed as a holiday; and the workmen at the Birkenhead Docks, 2,000 in number, each received a day's wage.  Later in the evening a ball and supper took place in the Dock warehouse” Designed by Joseph Paxton, Birkenhead was the first publicly funded civic park and inspired New York’s Central Park.   Clippings from the Liverpool Mercury during the month of April that year show that Birkenhead was quickly becoming a bustling port city and, mindful that the people of the community who were the “source of all wealth and power” would appreciate the "accommodation and recreation”, the commons area, "overgrown with fern, and rough with prickly gorse [had] been converted into a magnificent park, beautifully laid out, and planted with every variety of shrubs and flowers”.  The prickly gorse mentioned in that clip, now considered noxious, is a yellow-flowered shrub and member of the pea family. The day of the grand opening, Lord Viscount Morpeth gave the commemorating speech gushing, “We have seen something this day beyond even the dreams of Venice.  For instance, such an array of steamers as has today graced the Mersey, never could have been witnessed in Venice; and though perhaps a steamer may not be so picturesque an object as a gondola, I may yet remind you that… Venice never could have sent forth a message which in ten days might reach those harbors and roadsteads of the new world." In the first four days following the grand opening, the paper reported that a Mr. Cooper had  crossed the river and visited Birkenhead park, and 58,000 persons had done the same.   On April 23rd of this year, there will be a presentation hosted in conjunction with the Friends at Birkenhead Park.  For over two years, plans have been developed to secure Birkenhead Park's listing as a World Heritage Site. The evening's presentations are intended to provide an opportunity to learn more about this process.  Presenters include Professor Robert Lee of the University of Liverpool’s Department of History.   Happy Birthday today to the German botanist and early evolutionist Matthias Jakob Schleiden, (born April 5, 1804, Hamburg[Germany]—died June 23, 1881, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) Schleiden was also the cofounder (with Theodor Schwann) of the cell theory, Schleiden was the first person to recognize the importance of cells in plants. Later, speculated on the roll of the nucleus in cell division. Matthias Schleiden who said, "Youthful fancy lends to the rock, the tree, the flower, an animating genius, and in the thunder hears the voice of God. Then comes earnest science stripping Nature of that inspiring charm, and substituting the unvarying law of blind necessity."   Unearthed Words The poet Algernon Swinburne was born on this day in 1837. In A Forsaken Garden, the poem describes a garden - or rather, “the ghost of a garden”. Although the sun still shines and the rain still falls, the beds in the garden are blossomless. Now there is only brushwood and thorn.  Branches and briars cover the paths. Even the weeds are dead. The wind is relentless. The sun burns. The only thing left is one gaunt bleak blossom of scentless breath. Here’s the first five verses of A Forsaken Garden - In a coign of the cliff between lowland and highland, At the sea-down's edge between windward and lee, Walled round with rocks as an inland island, The ghost of a garden fronts the sea. A girdle of brushwood and thorn encloses The steep square slope of the blossomless bed Where the weeds that grew green from the graves of its roses Now lie dead. The fields fall southward, abrupt and broken, To the low last edge of the long lone land. If a step should sound or a word be spoken, Would a ghost not rise at the strange guest's hand? So long have the grey bare walks lain guestless, Through branches and briars if a man make way, He shall find no life but the sea-wind's, restless Night and day. The dense hard passage is blind and stifled That crawls by a track none turn to climb To the strait waste place that the years have rifled Of all but the thorns that are touched not of time. The thorns he spares when the rose is taken; The rocks are left when he wastes the plain. The wind that wanders, the weeds wind-shaken, These remain. Not a flower to be pressed of the foot that falls not; As the heart of a dead man the seed-plots are dry; From the thicket of thorns whence the nightingale calls not, Could she call, there were never a rose to reply. Over the meadows that blossom and wither Rings but the note of a sea-bird's song; Only the sun and the rain come hither All year long. The sun burns sere and the rain dishevels One gaunt bleak blossom of scentless breath. Only the wind here hovers and revels In a round where life seems barren as death. Here there was laughing of old, there was weeping, Haply, of lovers none ever will know, Whose eyes went seaward a hundred sleeping Years ago.     Today's book recommendation In honor of the anniversary of the opening of Birkhead Park, Today’s book recommendation is: The Busiest Man in England: A Life of Joseph Paxton, Gardener, Architect & Victorian Visionary by Kate Colquhoun     Today's Garden Chore Friday is picture day! Today take wide-angle shots of your garden.  Get the vistas from the windows of your house, from the approach from the street, from your neighbors house, from the corners of your property.       Something Sweet to revive the little botanic spark in your heart Edward Kemp the landscape gardener and architect at Birkenhead, placed an ad in the Liverpool Mercury after the opening of Birkenhead, he was out of work and was offering his services, “[Edward Kemp] begs to offer his services to the Noblemen and Gentlemen in the vicinity of Birkenhead and Liverpool…The fluttering testimonials which he has received from numberless visitors to the Birkenhead park, induce him to believe that a simple reference to the past and present condition of the park …. will be sufficient to ensure for him a large and liberal patronage.” He must have found something - because Edward Kemp went on to be a leading Victorian Landscape Gardener and successful gardener.

Phil explains how you can get involved and nominate your team. Nathan Munson Assistant Manager at Needham Market Town explains how their trip to Weymouth in the FA Trophy got rained off and the club forced to concede the tie when a midweek Tuesday was the only possible date for the re-arrangement. Morpeth Town Chairman Ken Beattie was fearful of his club's future when he was last on the show last season, being forced to take compulsory promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One East. It's proven financially costly but he's pleased with the results with his side sitting atop of the League heading into Christmas. Alex Narey, Editor at The Non League Paper admits the internal appointment of Wrexham interim boss Graham Barrow to full-time manager was a bit of a shock, but thinks it may just prove a very shrewd and sensible one. With Dulwich Hamlet set to return home to Champion Hill on Boxing Day too, Alex touts theirs as the story of a very successful year for non league football.

It's still only January but Tim Fuell and Swampy are discussing promotion from two very different perspectives. First up Morpeth Town Chairman Ken Beattie and his sleep-depriving decision to be made on whether to take promotion to the Northern Premier League and risk the demise of the club he loves and has built over years as a community hub or stay in the Northern League and risk the wrath of the FA in not accepting promotion which appears to be mandatory for those finishing in the promotion spots with a suitable ground. A very interesting debate. Next Ben Connell, who started a team with his mates and now finds himself as manager of the side being hailed the first to be promoted in the football pyramid. 17 wins from 17 for Colne Athletic in Division Three of the Essex and Suffolk Border League Division Three and still 5 games to play with the title potentially wrapped up this weekend. Finally, a chat with former Molesey, Basingstoke Town, Crawley Town, Whitehawk and now Eastbourne Borough FC midfielder Sergio Torres on why a documentary is being made on is life. From an Argentinean brick factory to Old Trafford, his is a story of boyhood dreams and self-belief, the crowdfunding project to make the documentary is well advanced but still needs pledges to make it happen.

Announcer:          Hi and welcome to the R and R Property Podcast with The Real Estate Girl, Denise Haynes. In our podcast we talk about all things real estate in rural New South Wales. We discuss a diverse range of topics to do with real estate, whether it is about making the tree change, doing a rental, or getting to know our awesome country community. If ever you're in the area please pop by and meet our team. R and R property are an amazing all-women real estate agency working within the Stroud, Gloucester, and Bulahdelah areas. Now for our podcast. Denise:  Hi everyone and welcome to podcast number six. I'm Denise Haynes from R and R property. Today I have invited a special guest into the R and R office to chat with us. You know at R and R Property we specialise in assisting our clients in making the move from city areas to the country, what we like to call a tree change. Our guest today is Karen Hutchinson, one of the busiest ladies I know. Firstly I'd like to welcome you Karen, and thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us. Karen:    Thank you Denise. It's a pleasure to be here. Denise:  Karen is a local council representative from Mid-Coast Council. She also runs her own businesses and a thousand acre farm, is that correct? Karen:    Yeah. Denise:  She's a very busy lady. The reason I wanted to speak with you is because you have actually done the tree change yourself. As everyone knows I'm always advising our clients to chat with others that have already made the move just to get an experienced account of things. I know you packed up your family and moved to the country and we'd love to hear your story, Karen. Firstly, how long has it been since you made the move and where were you living before? Karen:    It's 19 years since we left the Northern Beaches in Sydney, which I thought was God's country. We've re-established that God's country is up here. Denise:  Very good. I agree with that. What were you worried about with moving to the country area? Karen:    I had my own business in Sydney and I'm a bit of a people person and I was only momentarily concerned about the move and I just thought, "Well, let's run with this." I suppose I had plan B in my mind that I could always run back to Sydney but never, never, never. Denise:  Very good. I'm very pleased to hear that, I must say. Karen is a very big advocate for Stroud, she's Stroud proud and we love her. People are often concerned about finding work in a country area. That's one of the major things that I hear all the time. Have you had trouble finding work? I know that's not true because as I said you are one of the busiest people I know, but maybe just let everyone know what it is that you do do and how you've come about that. Karen:    Okay. Eight years ago I broke my leg on our farm and while I was recuperating I designed a label to go on a jar. I didn't know what I was going to put in that jar but I thought I wasn't going to waste this nine months of being incapacitated and not come out with something positive out of it. We now run a very successful family-owned and run jam and condiment business and you'll find our products scattered between Sydney, Newcastle, America. We're very, very delighted about that.                   I think as far as employment is concerned, there's a lot of casual work up here if you're willing to have a go and I have seen so many home-based businesses evolve in this valley, is unbelievable. You would be surprised what's in a lot of people's homes with creative arts, men with mechanic businesses at home. It's just amazing. Denise:  That's true. There really is plenty of work there depending on what you want to do. The work is there to find if you want it. Just so everyone knows, too, Karen's business is called Stroud Valley Harvest and it's absolutely beautiful. We stock our settlement gift packs with Stroud Valley Harvest goodies and everyone always raves about them. She's a very busy lady and am I correct in saying you do all that out of your home kitchen? Karen:    Yes. We do. We run it, we cook it, we package it and we have fun. It's a family involvement because when you've got a few hundred jars of jam to label you call in the troops for help. Denise:  Even the grandkids get a helping hand, do they, or actually help you out, sorry? Karen:    Absolutely. Absolutely, and they help on the farm. We have an egg farm with birds that are free to range. We're now with Woolworths with our farm fresh eggs. The five grandchildren help on the farm, too. Denise:  That's great. I've seen them on Facebook digging veggie gardens and having a great time riding their motorbikes around. What are your eggs called? Karen:    Stroud Valley Harvest Eggs. Denise:  Excellent. I can recommend those, too. Another thing that people worry about is their friends and family. "Will they ever, ever come and visit us?" Maybe have a chat about friends and family. Do you still see them? Do you still go back to Sydney? Have you made friends here? Let us know what that's about. Karen:    I've got a huge friend base in this valley. I go back to Sydney for business only and I go down and I run straight back. Friends and family, we had a very big influx of visitors when we first moved up here and they were amazed that we actually had running water and electricity. The visits that we have now, are sort of spread far apart, because they thought my husband was taking me away from the city into the boondocks but they were flabbergasted when they saw the way we live up here. Denise:  That's good, that they come and visit you. Have any of the made the move themselves? Karen:    Yes, actually. We have some friends at Bulahdelah that were friends on the Northern Beaches and they've embraced the community in Bulahdelah, too. It's wonderful and you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like. It's all about choice. Denise:  That's it. It's all about quality of life isn't it? Yeah. That's great. How do you find our local community? Karen:    Our local community are just absolutely amazing. They've got the biggest hearts. If anybody's in strife there's always somebody that you can call on and it's an amazing community. Denise:  Yeah, that's true. Everyone pulls together when the time is needed, don't they? If there's any sort of drama or disaster or someone's struggling everyone pulls together and that's when you really find out what the community's like.                   Another thing that we do here quite often is about the commuting and I quite often say to people, "Look, yes you can commute to work but you are travelling along lovely country roads taking in the landscape, not stuck in gridlock." Have you actually found that to be the case as well, because I know you do a lot of travelling? You work from home but with the council you're also travelling a lot. Karen:    It's amazing. You don't realise until you look at your speedometer and go, "Wow, have I done that many kilometres?" It doesn't feel like you're doing that many. We actually live on the Bucketts Way and there is a peak hour and it starts about 5:00 a.m. in the morning and there is a stream of people that go down the Bucketts Way to commute to Newcastle. I know for a fact that there's even a few people that commute to Gosford for work. It's an easy drive. Denise:  I love to listen to podcasts just like this while I'm travelling around. It's a great time to think and reflect and to learn as well, isn't it? Okay, so how has your family adjusted to the move? Karen:    Our family, we brought our two girls up, well we brought one daughter up from Sydney and her daughter and one daughter went to uni at Bathurst the same year that we moved up here. She's finished uni and she's moved back home and we are all on the farm. We all have our own separate homes of course. Then I've had more grandchildren born into the area and they just love it. They go to the local schools and they play netball down in Raymond Terrace which is not far to go. All their sporting requirements are all fulfilled. Denise:  Yeah. That's it, they can do whatever they want really, can't they? Can be, again like us, as busy as they want to be. Karen:    Exactly. Exactly. Denise:  Okay. Do you have any tips for those considering moving to the country? Karen:    My biggest tip would be think positive, embrace it, and enjoy it. Denise:  Good advice. Karen, Dayanna your daughter is now studying again isn't she? Karen:    She's studying at Newcastle University and she's actually doing her master's now in work health and safety. Our granddaughter who is now 21, she's studying by distant education with UNE at Armidale. She's doing ag-business. Our oldest daughter who is actually running our farm now, she picks up every little biosecurity course, any course that's going through the Tocal College which is only 45-50 minutes away from here.                   Everything, as far as education is concerned, everything is at your fingertips. Denise:  Yeah. It's great. They certainly don't miss out on anything here, do they? Karen:    No, no. They don't and if your child's keen well then they will find these courses just like my children do. Denise:  Yeah, exactly. Just thinking about that we've also got an Olympian in our area as well, haven't we? Karen:    We do. Denise:  Certainly the children can do whatever they choose to do. Karen:    Yes, yeah. Look, and they can. Our oldest granddaughter is a State Age champion in rowing, in doubles. She used to train at Morpeth. She would leave the farm at 4:30 in the morning but that was her choice and she enjoyed that before going to school. Denise:  Yeah. Yeah. Just the dedication's there so they just take that opportunity. Karen:    Exactly. Denise:  Yeah. No, that's wonderful. I just wanted to check with you before we finish up. Do you have any regrets about moving to the country? Karen:    I have no regrets whatsoever. It's just been fantastic and when I see the news of the night I just think, "How lucky we are that our grandchildren are growing up in this area." They have everything at their fingertips and they just love being outside, they just love the atmosphere. They have their friends. Yeah, you've got to travel sometimes to drop little friends off and pick your grandchildren up but that's all part of country living. Denise:  Exactly. Like we said before, the commuting's very enjoyable as well isn't it? It's not a chore. Karen:    No, not at all. Not at all. Because I, just like yourself Denise, I do a lot of thinking, a lot of planning, in the car and I am fulfilling a lot of dreams I've always dreamt and that was to own my own patchwork shop which we've done. We've run retreats and patchwork lessons on the farm and hopefully in early 2017 we start the building of our café and farm gate shop on the farm. Denise:  I can't wait for that, I must say. That's going to be amazing and just another wonderful thing for our community. Thank you so much Karen for coming and chatting to us today. It's been a pleasure. Karen:    Thank you for having me, Denise. It's a pleasure to share our experience. Denise:  It is. Thank you.                   Thank you everyone. That is podcast number six. I hope you've got great value out of that and once again I'd like to thank Karen for coming in and joining us. It's been wonderful. The topic of this episode of Exploring Environmental History is the history of severe river flooding in the north east of England. With the floods in the town of Morpeth in September 2008 fresh in the minds of people in Northern England it seems appropriate to look back in time to great historic floods and to see whether the rivers of Northumberland have produced even greater floods than those experienced recently. The guest on this podcast is David Archer, a retired hydrologist who worked for Northumbrian Water and the National Rivers Authority, and an expert on the history of floods in the North east of England. He will explore the great floods in the Tyne basin of the past 250 years and even beyond. In addition David will discuss what historical sources are used for the reconstruction of past floods and how such information can be used for current flood risk management.
