If you lower the weights slowly when training, will that boost your muscle growth and strength gains? In today's episode, we're discussing a new meta-analysis (still in preprint) that pooled the results from eight studies on this topic, to see if an intentionally slow eccentric tempo when strength training produces better results. The results gave us a lot to debate, so let's dive in! *** Do you like what you hear so far? Please leave a five-star review in your podcast player. And hit that follow button! Our guest on this week's episode is Andrei Quinn-Barabanov, Supply Chain Industry Practice Lead and Senior Director with Moody's. It was five years ago this month that our world was rocked with the Covid-19 virus. That is when businesses and schools closed and we were all stuck at home waiting for things to get better. All the while, supply chains kept us fed and happy at home, for the most part. Our supply chains had to adjust and they are still feeling the effects of the pandemic five years later. Our guest reflects on how supply chains reacted then and how they now will never be the same. Most of our editorial staff was at ProMat 2025 this past week in Chicago – a huge supply chain show and the largest material handling exhibition in North America.  And everywhere we looked, there were robotics and automation systems to be seen. Most distribution facilities and factories will eventually end up with a number of different types of automation and robotics within their facilities. So, the big challenge is to integrate all of these disparate systems to play nice with one another. We look at a couple of "orchestration" solutions on display at ProMat.All of the automation solutions exhibited at ProMat take power. In this episode, we look at some innovative energy solutions that keep those automation systems operating at peak performance. We also discuss an energy management solution that can potentially lower the utility bills of facilities.Supply Chain Xchange  also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. Government systems often take a lot of flack for their (sometimes) built-in inability to take risks and make big bets. So, what would it take to encourage the government to take those big, risky moonshots? For Health, that's the role of ARPA-H – to fund new ways of improving health by investing in people with big ideas. We sat down with ARPA-H Director Renee Wegrzyn at Aspen Ideas Health to talk about how it's going and what comes next. We discuss:Why ARPA-H is personal for President Biden. How ARPA-H's special authorities – from flexible hiring to novel contracting – are its secret weapons for speed and scale. The critical role of Program Managers – single decision maker driving the vision and execution of each $50-$200 million initiative.Renee says ARPA-H gives her the ability to direct funds into areas that are sometimes left off the list of “must haves” for innovation:“...one of the only top down things I've done as a director is said, ‘Why aren't we funding more in women's health? We don't have any program managers in the pipeline that want to exclusively focus on this'. But I think we all inherently understand that women are underrepresented in almost every aspect of health. So I asked our [Program Managers].. who wants to raise [a] hand and pick a topic that is really either unique to women, or is disproportionately affecting women that we can do a sprint and invest around. And so I got six Program Managers to come up with topics, everything from Women's Health at home, to brain health, to understanding and quantifying pain – and through the Investor Catalyst Hub we have worked with investors to understand what kind of convincing scale do we need to get to for you to be the second investor. And we competed this across the country.”Relevant LinksAbout ARPA-H ARPA-H Health Equity Factsheet The Minor Consult Podcast EpisodeARPA - H TimelineYoutube Conversation with New Yorker writerWhite House FAQ Sheet on ARPA-HAbout Our GuestDr. Renee Wegrzyn is the first director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), appointed by President Biden on October 11, 2022. Evin Sisemore talks about founding a business alongside her husband; navigating its acquisition; how sales have evolved; & supporting women in supply chain.   IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:   [07.47] Evin's career journey, and how she found supply chain. “I ended up taking a job and falling in love with it. We always joke, ‘Don't ever burn any bridges in this industry' because, once you're in it, you're hooked!” [09.22] Why Evin decided to found her own business, Texas Motive Solutions, in 2018; and her advice for budding entrepreneurs. “The reason we were so successful is because we had an amazing team. I would never go into anything without having the best people surrounding me.” [12.52] Evin's experience founding a business with her husband, and how they achieved a work/life balance whilst living and working so closely together. “My husband is my biggest cheerleader, but he will also push me more than anyone else to be better.” [16.29] How Evin navigated the acquisition of Texas Motive Solutions by Concentric; how the acquisition allowed her to continue to achieve high levels of customer experience whilst growing rapidly; and how she found her place in the new organization. “It didn't feel like I was selling our company. It was: we're merging with these other people, and we're going to have people that we can share best practices with. They have their strengths, we have ours – and we're just bringing them all together and making it better for our customers.” [19.41] Evin's role as Regional Vice President, and why entrepreneurship means doing the dirty work. [23.51] A closer look at the forklift power industry, and its increasing focus on sustainability issues. [26.14] The changing face of sales, and how Evin adapted her strategies and techniques, especially as a woman in the industry. “Sales used to be that you had to be at the golf course, or the bar. But, as a woman, I didn't want to just go out to happy hours every night – we had to find a way to bring our customers value. We go in, find their problems, and find a way to prevent them.” [28.31] Evin's experience as a woman in the forklift power industry, and how she approaches equality in her own organization. “There are definitely still challenges, but it's changing – people are seeing value in great people, whether you're male or female.” [32.18] How Evin supports women in the industry and her advice for what we can all do to help move the needle. [33.52] The biggest lessons Evin has learned over the course of her career so far. [35.20] Evin's love of sports! [37.08] The future for Evin.   RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:   You can connect with Evin over on LinkedIn. They discuss the following case: A 20-year-old woman with a history of hypertension (HTN), initially thought to be secondary to a mid-aortic syndrome that resolved after aortic stenting, presents with a re-occurrence of HTN. The case will go through the differential diagnosis of early onset HTN focusing on structural etiologies of HTN, including mid-aortic syndrome and aortitis. We will also discuss the multi-modality imaging used for diagnosis and surveillance, indications and types of procedural intervention, and how to diagnose and treat an underlying inflammatory disorder leading to aortitis. The expert commentary was provided by Dr. Daniella Kadian-Dodov, Associate Professor of Medicine and Vascular Medicine specialist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Case Media - Hypertension With a Twist Pearls - Hypertension With a Twist Early onset hypertension (HTN) and lower extremity claudication should raise suspicion for aortic stenosis (including mid-aortic syndrome). Initial evaluation should include arterial duplex ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging such as CT or MR angiogram of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis to assess for arterial stenosis involving the aorta and/or branching vessels. Mid-aortic syndrome can have multiple underlying etiologies. Concentric aortic wall thickening should raise suspicion for an underlying inflammatory disorder. Initial evaluation should include inflammatory markers such as ESR, CRP, and IL-6, but normal values do not exclude underlying aortitis.  While Takayasu arteritis is the most common inflammatory disorder associated with mid-aortic syndrome, IgG4-RD should also be a part of the differential diagnosis. IgG subclass panel can detect IgG4-RD with elevated serum IgG4 levels, but some cases can require pathology for diagnosis. Catheter based intervention is a safe and effective treatment of aortic stenosis for both primary aortic stenosis and post-procedural re-stenosis. Multi-modality imaging, including cross-sectional imaging and duplex ultrasound, plays a central role for the diagnosis, management, and post-procedural surveillance of aortic disease. A multi-disciplinary team (as exemplified by the participants of this podcast!) is essential for the management of complex aortopathy cases to optimize clinical outcomes. Show Notes - Hypertension With a Twist 1.  Early onset HTN can have multiple etiologies – aortic stenosis (including but not limited to secondary to congenital aortic coarctation and mid–aortic syndrome, as well as in stent re-stenosis if there is a history of aortic stenting), thrombosis, infection, inflammatory/autoimmune disorders, renovascular disease, polycystic kidney disease, and endocrine disorders. 2. Mid-aortic syndrome is characterized by segmental or diffuse narrowing of the abdominal and/or distal descending aorta with involvement of the branches of the proximal abdominal aorta (renal artery, celiac artery, superior mesenteric artery) and represents approximately 0.5 to 2% of all cases of aortic narrowing. Underlying etiologies include genetic syndromes, inflammatory, non-inflammatory, and idiopathic. It is important to have a high suspicion of underlying inflammatory disorders if cross-sectional i...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: CE-incubated tobacco & NCD policy Charity: updates, funding gap, and future plans for Concentric Policies, published by Yelnats T.J. on December 29, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Executive Summary Tobacco is a massive global issue: 8 million annual deaths and 230 million annual DALYS (15% and 9% of global totals respectively). There are evidence-based policies - outlined by the WHO's MPOWER framework - that countries can adopt to reduce tobacco use. Policy advocacy for implementing MPOWER measures in neglected countries can avert DALYs with cost-effectiveness matching GiveWell's top charities. Since starting in mid-September, Concentric Policies has engaged with seven ministries of health, met with four, and received a partnership request from one to develop a multisectoral plan for noncommunicable diseases. Closing our Year 1 funding gap ($21,000) is critical for building the necessary capacity to support our government advocacy plans in 2024. About Us Concentric Policies is a nonprofit focused on preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases. We support the adoption of evidence-based health policies in countries underserved by large NGOs and the international community. Through collaboration with governments, civil society, and citizens, we aim to reduce the unhealthy consumption of tobacco, alcohol, sodium, and sugar. Concentric Policies provides free assistance by engaging stakeholders, strengthening the evidence base through research, and offering technical assistance throughout the policy process. Concentric Policies was launched through Charity Entrepreneurship, a London-based incubator that turns well-researched ideas into high-impact organizations. Charity Entrepreneurship has helped launch over 30 charities that are now reaching over 20 million people annually with their interventions. Problem Annual deaths from tobacco were 6 million in 2013 and rose to 8 million before the pandemic. Today, more people are killed annually by tobacco usage than malaria, HIV, and neonatal deaths combined… twice over.[1] In addition, tobacco usage increases healthcare expenditures, decreases productivity, exacerbates inequality, degrades the environment, and contributes to child labor. This EA Forum post from World No Tobacco Day covers these harms in more detail. Solution The WHO's MPOWER framework provides cost-effective demand-reduction measures to help countries reduce tobacco consumption. Since MPOWER was introduced globally 15 years ago, an estimated 300 million less people are smoking than might have been if smoking prevalence had stayed the same.[2] Tobacco taxation is the most effective (and cost-effective) intervention for reducing tobacco consumption, yet it is the most neglected intervention.[3] Tobacco has an average price elasticity in LMICs of around -0.5, meaning that for a 10% increase in the retail price of tobacco, consumption decreases by 5%.[4] Opportunity The number of countries that have adopted at least one MPOWER measure at the highest level of achievement has grown from 44 in 2008 to 151 in 2022. However, only a handful of nations have full compliance with MPOWER guidelines and 44 countries remain unprotected by any of the MPOWER measures.[5] Despite nearly every country signing the WHO's treaty on tobacco, only 13 nations outside of Europe meet the WHO's recommended minimum of taxing tobacco at 75% of retail value. Since starting work in September, we have learned and reaffirmed the following: Some governments are not aware of the potential ROI from comprehensive implementation of the MPOWER framework Consolidated funding in the tobacco control space has led to only a dozen or so of the highest-burden countries receiving the majority of resources Many smaller countries do not receive any attention from major tobacco control organizat...

As we have seen over the past few practices (starting with Week 95) imbalance in the body causes a limitation in movement, connective tissue strain and joint instability. Muscles that get locked long, or short, are both considered weak, as they don't have full range of motion or usage of their function. Concentric contraction is actively engaging the muscles, they shorten. Isometric contraction is actively holding the muscles engaged. Eccentric contraction is actively lengthening, stretching the muscle. The opposing muscles are balancing this action out. We sit most of the day, our hip flexors are locked short, bum muscles are locked long and we slouch. The natural antidote to this is to stand up and do some stretching because moving dissolves the build up of collagen and promotes elastin within the connective tissues. There is an innate wisdom in our bodies that seeks balance, when you are tired physically, mentally and energetically, you activate and engage muscles to release their holding pattern and wake them up by yawning and stretching. This is called pandiculation. However, when we stand up we then notice an imbalance within our posture which is shown as lower cross syndrome. If the pelvis has an anterior tilt, the hip flexors and lower back are locked short and tight, then the abdominals and glutes are locked long and weak. If the pelvis has a posterior tilt the hip flexors and lower back are locked long and weak, then the abdominals and glutes are locked short and tight. Either way sitting and slouching for long periods of time, weakens the glutes and locks them for a very long time where they fall asleep! This class we will focus on balancing this out by knitting the abdominals, zipping up the zipper extending out of the pelvis and maintaining a tall integral posture while focusing on the glutes, specifically the piriformis muscle, awakening the posterior parts of the pelvis and toning the muscles for healthier engagement. The piriformis attaches on the front of the sacrum and crosses the back of the pelvis to the outer femur bone called the trochanter. Piriformis is a lateral rotator and stabiliser, this means it externally rotates the leg bone out whether the leg extends back behind the body or lifts forward higher than 90 degrees of the pelvis. The piriformis works to hold the legs in relation to the pelvis by stabilising, this can be felt by bringing the weight in the heel of the foot. Yoga bricks will help us explore this phenomena by isolating movement in the toes (meant for mobility) and heels (are for stability). With weight in the heels, we can feel the tone and integrity rebound up the body creating tensegrity, (interconnectivle tensile force of awakened integral tone of engagement). Remember during your practice – No muscle acts alone, so feel how everything is interconnected and use the breath to both (inhale) invigorate and feed the muscle that energy, then (exhale) calm and nourish the tissues. We will repeat this piriformis engagement, working on stability first and then mobility over and over in this class to wake up and energise these muscle groups, balancing out our imbalances. Faith in Christ should affect all of our decisions and our lifestyle. A believers' choices can affect other believers—either directly or indirectly. Mature believers make loving sacrifices to help those who are not as mature in their faith.

Download Episode (9.6 MB, 14.0 minutes) Show notes: Microbe of the episode: Dictyostelium discoideum Skipper virus News item Takeaways Large multicellular organisms like us have interesting mechanisms for using one set of genetic instructions present in all cells to form a large, complex community of many different types of cells with different structures and functions, all working together. Single-celled microbes do not have the same requirements for genetic or structural complexity, but they do often display interesting communal patterns and behaviors. In this study, bacteria growing in colonies on agar displayed a particular mechanism of pattern formation previously seen only in eukaryotes, called segmentation clock or clock and wavefront process. In this process, the cells in the colony are all acting individually without communication with each other, but nevertheless form a repeating ring structure in the colony as it grows, possibly allowing some measure of differentiation of cells that could help the community survive various challenges.   Journal Paper: Chou K-T, Lee DD, Chiou J, Galera-Laporta L, Ly S, Garcia-Ojalvo J, Süel GM. 2022. I experiment in my gym each week with different ways to load the body in an attempt to make it Xplode! Add a load to the body and the body will adapt to that load. But no all loads are created equal! You have different ways for the body to handle the load. Different types of contractions to manage the loads. Concentric (yawn), Isometric (double yawn) and most exciting, Eccentric (Gahhdouche). Eccentric contractions are where the muscle is actively lengthening. Think about slowly lowering a mountain climber on a rope. The rope is getting longer but it is always under tension. This illicit incredible adaptation in the muscle fibers. This makes you LoadXplode faster. Want to hear some of my favourite Eccentric exercises?
