This week, the two of us decided to dive straight into one of the most talked-about and highly anticipated horror films of the year: The Backrooms. What began as a single unsettling image posted online anonymously has now evolved into an A24 feature film, already amassing over $200 million worldwide. We break down the origins of The Backrooms and how it's evolved over the years, from its roots on 4chan and the rise of liminal horror to becoming a viral YouTube sensation created by a teenager before eventually being picked up by A24. We discuss what worked, what didn't, what disappointed us, and what we hoped to see from the adaptation. And despite moments that genuinely impressed us, we found ourselves grappling with why some of the horror elements that worked so well online didn't translate nearly as well onto the big screen.  We also chatted about creepypastas, filming found footage, and Slender Man, and why some horror concepts might be more effective online than they are in theaters. If you've seen the film and have thoughts of your own, this is a great convo to dive into, so ... COME HANG OUT!!! The Black Dog of Depression: Dreamwork and Self-Discovery in Ireland with Diane Hartman

The Dream Journal

In this powerful episode of The Dream Journal, host Katherine Bell speaks with award-winning author Diane Hartman about the profound connection between dreams, depression, writing, and self-discovery. Diane shares the deeply personal story behind her memoir, Getting Lost on My Way: Self-Discovery on Ireland's Back Roads, and how a solo journey through Ireland helped her confront the “black dog” of depression, reclaim her voice, and rediscover herself through writing. Together, Katherine and Diane explore how dreams can guide healing, illuminate emotional truth, and reveal the deeper patterns shaping our lives. Diane opens up about recurring dreams of a black dog chasing her—a powerful symbol of depression—and the unforgettable dream encounters that shaped her path, including a life-changing connection to Irish poet and philosopher John O'Donohue. The conversation also touches on creativity, memoir writing, ancestral memory, photography, humor in healing, and the courage it takes to follow a dream even when fear is present. If you're interested in dreamwork, memoir, mental health, healing journeys, Ireland travel, creative transformation, or the role of dreams in personal growth, this episode offers inspiration, depth, and practical encouragement. In this episode, we explore: Dreams and their role in emotional healing Depression and the symbol of the “black dog” Diane Hartman's solo travels through Ireland Writing as a path to recovery and self-discovery The influence of John O'Donohue and the idea of anam cara (soul friend) Memoir, creativity, photography, and transformation How humor and courage can coexist with grief and struggle Diane Hartman is an award-winning author, photographer, and retired school librarian. #221 - A one-way ticket sounds romantic until you're standing in a foreign airport, exhausted, hungry, and convinced you've made a huge mistake. That's where Tracy Smith's story gets real and why it's so relatable. After a divorce, years of nonstop parenting, and a career grind that left little room to breathe, she finally chooses herself and discovers that freedom can feel like fear at first. We talk about what actually led to that first leap to Iceland and how one impulsive booking turned into a multi-country sprint through Iceland, Denmark, Norway, and Ireland. Tracy shares the messy details most people leave out: the panic of being lost, the running inner commentary, and the moment she realizes she has to stop asking whether she “deserves” to be there. From there, travel becomes a mirror for identity, especially as the empty nest edges closer and her work identity starts to wobble. You'll also hear how she travels “solo” in a practical way, planning logistics and often hiring private guides for deeper context, connection, and safety. And yes, we get into the monkey scratch in Bali, the rabies-shot scramble, and how being a mom stays in the back of her mind even while she's chasing adventure. Tracy's book, The Purpose of Getting Lost, ties it all together with the episode's biggest takeaway: permission is a skill you can practice. If Tracy's message hits home, subscribe to The Human Adventure, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find these stories. To learn more about Tracy and her book check out her website www.tracysmithauthor.com and check her out on social media @tracytravelseverywhere on both Facebook and Instagram.I would love to have you join The Human Adventure Community on Instagram @humanadventurepod.Want to be a guest on The Human Adventure? Don't forget to like and subscribe to this channel, ring the bell, and you can support this channel by becoming a Patron on Patreon, a Member of this YouTube channel, and you can pick up Dragonlance media and get $10 by signing up to StartPlaying.Games, using my affiliate links. All links are in the description below. Discussion Segment 1 — The Worldbuilding Trap New Dungeon Masters often believe: “I need to build the whole world before we play.” You don't. In fact, overbuilding can: delay starting the game lock you into ideas that don't serve the table make improvisation harder, not easier Worldbuilding should serve play, not replace it. Segment 2 — Start Where the Characters Are The only part of the world that matters is: where the characters are what they care about what's about to happen Everything else is optional. Build outward in concentric circles: The immediate location Nearby threats or opportunities Distant forces that might matter later If the players can't reach it, they don't need it yet. Segment 3 — Build in Broad Strokes, Not Detail Think in impressions, not encyclopedias. Instead of: “The Kingdom of Valen has a three-tier tax system…” Use:  “Valen is rich, paranoid, and ruled by bureaucracy.” Broad strokes: give you flexibility are easier to remember invite player interpretation Details should emerge through play, not prep. Segment 4 — Turn the World Into a Problem Generator A good setting creates problems, not just flavor. Ask: Who wants something they can't have? What is about to break? What happens if no one intervenes? Worldbuilding works best when: factions collide values conflict power is unstable If nothing is in tension, the world is static. Segment 5 — Let Players Help Build the World Your players are an untapped resource. Ways to involve them: Ask where their character is from Let them name places or NPCs Tie backstory into existing conflicts This does two things: reduces your workload increases player investment Shared ownership makes the world feel alive. Segment 6 — Reusable Worldbuilding Smart worldbuilding can be reused endlessly. Create: factions instead of organizations themes instead of histories NPC roles instead of fixed characters Example:  “Corrupt local authority” can appear in: a village a city a kingdom Reuse patterns — reskin details. Segment 7 — Maps Are Optional Maps are tools, not requirements. You only need a map when: location matters tactically travel choices are meaningful players ask for one Otherwise: verbal geography is enough sketches beat perfection imagination fills the gaps Never let cartography stop play. Segment 8 — Worldbuilding as a Play Aid Ask yourself: “How does this help me run the game?” Good worldbuilding helps you: improvise NPC reactions answer player questions create consequences quickly If a detail doesn't make play easier, cut it. Segment 9 — The DM101 Mindset Shift Here's the key mindset change: You are not creating a world to be admired.  You are creating a world to be used. Your setting is: flexible incomplete responsive A living world grows in response to player action — not prep time. Worldbuilding doesn't need to be big to be meaningful. Start small. Build outward. Let play do the heavy lifting. When your world exists to support the table, you'll never feel lost in it again. In this episode I am joined by Igor Vasilevitsky, a counselor, father, and exceptional writer on all things healing, masculinity, and femininity. He works with archetypes to help men and women heal and grow (he has helped me on my own journey). We dive into the benevolent or divine father archetype and unpack why he is so important in our world. The father represents guidance towards what is good and it's very clear how we as a society deeply long for our collective 'dad' to come home to us. Listen in as we dissect the masculine archetypes, demystify the healthy father, discuss power and love, how anyone can learn to father themselves, and so much more.Igor, as a father himself, has created an online community hub for men who are seeking to mature into the healthiest, most benevolent and generative versions of masculinity. In this deeply reflective episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sayan welcomes Tracy Smith, author of The Purpose Was in Getting Lost. Tracy opens up about her journey from feeling disconnected and directionless to finding self-belonging and purpose through vulnerability, travel, and self-trust. She shares how the quiet ache of being “lost” became the very invitation to rediscover her authentic self — not through reinvention, but by saying yes to herself for the first time. About the Guest: Tracy Smith is a writer, traveler, and mother based in Washington, D.C. Her memoir explores how losing herself — both literally and emotionally — led to powerful transformation. Through stories of courage, midlife exploration, and self-compassion, Tracy helps others see “lost” not as failure, but as freedom. Key Takeaways: Getting lost can be the path back to yourself. Reinvention isn't about becoming someone new — it's about reclaiming who you've always been. Saying yes to yourself, even in small ways, is radical self-love. Travel and solitude can be powerful mirrors for inner healing. Connect with Tracy Smith: Instagram | Website | Author Page  — Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? In today's episode, I talk about the good side of getting lost in my garage. I often talk about avoiding YouTube rabbit holes, but the difference is getting lost in content that is contained, like books and magazines. The point with the guitar is to be selective, but also to have fun.   So if you have a bunch of courses or books on guitar playing, great! Turn off the internet and use them. Once a month,  have a dabbling day and go through your materials in a no-pressure way. You might discover some new things or rediscover some things you've forgotten. THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - GETTING LOST IN A MYSTICAL MIST WITH ERROLL GARNER AND BIX BEIDERBECKE - TWO TITANS OF JAZZ TRANSPORT US TO REALMS OF MYSTERY. DOUBLE DOWN!!

Today we present two piano instrumentals that explore the mysteries of Mist.  Strictly speaking, a “mist” can be defined by some water vapor that obscures your vision, but how many more evocative instances can you think of where a mist appears in a story or film, usually preceding an arrival of some spiritual manifestation? There was a video game called “Myst” (spelled with a Y) which featured a series of puzzles saturated with a heady whiff of the arcane. Your sight is always obscured; your emotional restlessness is never assuaged.  Erroll Garner and Bix Beiderbecke were two jazz titans writing compositions separated by 30 years that hint at this other-worldly quality inherent in the idea of the Mist. Their music excites the senses and tugs at the heart simultaneously; it's music that lifts off and keeps insinuating an urge to maintain altitude in an unresolved quest for landing, but never deciding on a perch.ERROLL GARNERMost of you probably know Johnny Mathis's version of Misty, with lyrics by Johnny Burke, that was a monster hit of 1959, but Erroll Garner wrote the song as an instrumental 5 years earlier, on a plane flight to Chicago's OHare airport, after seeing a rainbow through the airplane window. That's a fitting image for the complicated feelings invoked here: a glimpse of hope through tears. Influenced by Earl Hines, Garner played with spontaneous timing changes, liquidy octaval melodies, and improvised chordal voicings, and his contribution to jazz evolution was to reconcile the gap between BeBop spontaneity and Orchestral formalism. His style was so free that he was dubbed “the happy man” because this joy he exuded was so palpable. Misty was concocted from the eternal music of the spheres - maybe because his feet were not on the ground when he composed it.BIX BEIDERBECKEThe comet of Bix Beiderbecke's talent was a mystery in itself: dead from alcohol in 1931 at the age of 28, his cornet style and compositional originality continues to fascinate almost 100 years later. A self taught musician, Bix appeared from podunk Iowa and immediately became a ragtime sensation at the height of the Jazz era with The Wolverines, then with Paul Whiteman's orchestra (along with Bing Crosby). He was a white man playing a traditionally black form of music, which was a novelty, and that made him easier to market to middle America - but such genius is color blind.Although renowned for his horn playing, he composed In a Mist on piano in 1927 (he was 24), and it's here that you see the influence of the impressionist composer Claude Debussy, the creator of such sensuous works as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and La Mer. Is this Jazz? How did he do it? Clearly, Bix was in touch with mystical forces beyond human understanding, or maybe, like Robert Johnson, he just made a deal with the devil. Either way, the spiritual quest suggested by these chord changes transports us into a misty continent of emotional confusion.

Target wants us sipping sugar cookie milk, Amazon says “tip your driver,” In-N-Out says goodbye to the #67, and we're reminiscing over our favorite throwback hairstyles. Oh, and the Contra Costa teachers strike? Officially done. Let's get into it.  Second Date Update: Tony called us about Mariah after their pizza date in Oakland. He said she was next-level gorgeous, sharp, funny, and told this story about her grandmother making tamales that “made him see the whole future.” They bonded over concerts (both of them love live music) swapped favorite Bay Area hangouts, and even agreed that the only people still eating gas station nachos at midnight are heroes.  Australia's Social Media Ban: Australia's government says it's protecting young people. The kids say their freedom is being taken away. In this episode, we explore the new under-16 social media ban, what sparked it, how it works, and why teens are now protesting.  Good News: Quicksand is REAL, and a Utah hiker found out the hard way. Stuck for hours in 21-degree weather, buried up to his thighs, and rescued with ladders and traction boards — this story is wild. Today we talk about how it happened, what rescuers did, and why this wasn't even the first quicksand rescue in the area.

Please enjoy our last re-release of favorite episodes before we launch season five! This one looks at the Science of Reading: The recent movement to look deeply into the Science of Reading (SOR) has shifted the training we seek for teachers, the training and programs endorsed at the state level, and the curriculum school districts purchase. So, why are our students still not reading and writing proficiently? Is it the instruction, curriculum, or teacher training and knowledge that is seriously impacting learning outcomes? Or, is it a combination of all three factors? In this episode, we discuss the SOR movement and why some students, particularly those with dyslexia, seem to be getting lost in the debate. UK Cider Tour 2025 Audio Snap Shots Wallace and Ria in Bristol In this Episode 469 of Cider Chat, we brings listeners inside the UK Totally Cider Tour 2025 through the voices of the guests who joined. From Somerset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, to Wales guests on this tour discovered not just cider and perry, but also community, history, and inspiration. First Impressions and Highlights Many guests shared that they signed up to experience places they couldn't access on their own. From the scale of Showering's Cider Mill, the second largest in the country to the intimate welcome at Oliver's, the contrast certainly left a deep impression. The discovery of Perry was a recurring theme. From Ohio travelers Chris and Megan who tasted their very first Perry on the tour, while Rodney from Virginia declared he'd be grafting Perry scions at home. Personal Connections Group Selfie with Sam Leach of Wilding Cider For repeat travelers like Debbie and Bryce from California, the tour reaffirmed how relationships with makers enrich the experience: “ They treat us like friends, not tourists.” Ancha from Hungary spoke of the joy of hiking the Malvern Hills in the rain and celebrating with fellow cider lovers. Rachel and Mary of Kanga Cider in Texas noted the value of orchard insights for their own plantings back home, while Thomas from Australia praised the tour for covering the full spectrum of producers—from industrial to artisanal. Learning and Inspiration Guests emphasized that tasting ciders in their native terroir cannot be replaced by books or certifications. Dan from Spacetime Mead and Cider Works in Dunmore Pennsylvania highlighted how only by being in Herefordshire or Somerset can one grasp the range of English cider styles. Susan and Tom of Heeman's Cellars in Ontario pointed out how the pacing of the tour allowed real reflection—something missing from busier farm tours. The Takeaway Whether first-timers or repeat guests, everyone agreed: the Totally Cider Tour offers access, education, and camaraderie that can't be replicated alone. As David of Oregon said it best, “It wasn't really about the cider—it was about the people.” Contact info for Totally Cider Tours Website page: https://ciderchat.com/totally-cider-tours/ For details on upcoming cider journeys and to join the waitlist, send an email to info@ciderchat.com and write in the heading Totally Cider Tours.
