Today's guest deejay is Martyn Palmer AKA Broken Chip. I came across Martyn while scouring Bandcamp for new music, a modern treasure hunt. Immersed in his album The Quiet Garden, I found myself drawn into its depths. I asked Martyn to share a mix with us. Martyn is an Australian musician and sound artist, a creator of serene soundscapes. His works have graced labels such as Flaming Pines (UK), Feral Media (AU), King Deluxe (CA), and A Future Without (UK). His music, often built on looped sounds, crafts a tranquil, contemplative atmosphere. His latest work, Landscapes, exemplifies this gentle electronic ambience, captivating listeners with its peaceful stillness. The name “Broken Chip” arose from his trials with a malfunctioning Roland Juno 106 synthesizer. The 80017a VCF/VCA voice chips began to fail, producing a detuned, raspy sound. Martyn wove this brokenness into his music, finding beauty in imperfection. Though the synthesizer eventually became unusable, the broken sound it produced inspired the name of his project. Martyn hopes his music serves as ambient background sound, suitable for homes, planes, or trains. Once released, he seldom reflects on its reception, preferring to let listeners discover and experience it on their own. His initial promotion is brief; he avoids persistent self-promotion, letting the music speak for itself. Martyn has two albums coming out on Home Normal later this year. You can look forward to them, and perhaps, find solace in the quiet moments he creates. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Philippe Neau. See you then. Oslated is a label collective from South Korea, often found presenting lovely deep meditative techno from the likes of Doltz, Saphileaum, Launaea, Javier Marimon, and many more personal faves. They also host a mix series, which has previously featured some great contributions by many faces readers of ASIP will recognize, so it was a pleasure to be asked to contribute a mix. I don't have too much to say on this one, but it moves through some very specific chapters with a common theme throughout (see if you can spot it)… as do many of my mixes! Today's guest deejay is Andrew Tasselmyer . I met Andrew through Robert Farrugia, co-founder of Complex Holiday. After Robert guest deejayed on Soundwave (listen to his mix here) I asked him who he thought would share a mix on the show and he suggested Andrew. I listened to some Andrew's many releases and extended an invitation immediately. Andrew is a musician from Baltimore currently living in Philadelphia. He utilizes samplers, field recordings, and lo-fi recording techniques to make textured and tactile sounds. In addition to his solo catalog on labels such as Laaps, Seil Records, Eilean Recs, Constellation Tatsu, Home Normal, and more, he is a member of Hotel Neon, Gray Acres, and Mordançage. Andrew has a new album coming on June 17 called Music for Nonexistent Films on Somewherecold Records. Andrew's mix for today's show has everything I love to hear on Soundwave. However, what surprised me was his inclusion of Julie Byrne's “Wisdom Teeth Song” in his mix. Julie's appearance in his mix isn't incongruous. It feels inevitable. I was so delighted to hear Julie's music in Andrew's mix that I was inspired to put together my own mix, which includes one of Julie's songs. You can listen to that mix here. Andrew has some words about his mix below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Dan Haines Cohen, founder of Machine Records. “Music for walking through piles of dead leaves.” For this mix, I was inspired to focus on the specific time and place I was in: the peak of autumn in the northeastern US.I love this time of year when mornings are cold, but not brutally so… just enough to smack you with a jolt of heightened awareness when you step outside. And for some reason, the sunshine feels better when it's filtered through the exploding colors of the leaves. I have no scientific basis for saying this but trust me, it's a fact. It also seems that the calendar has progressed far enough at this point in the year that people start to reflect on months past and look forward to the new year ahead. Everyone feels a little more thoughtful, I suppose. For this mix, I chose songs that could accompany someone on a wooded walk through the forest (or a nap in bed, whatever), with lots of textural analog sounds like hissing tape and shaky vibrato. The idea is that cracking leaves and snapping twigs can enhance the character of these recordings, which all feature a healthy dose of guitar (acoustic and electric), lo-fi beats and rhythms, and nostalgic timbres. I would encourage listening while walking and using earbuds/headpho --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message

A few things I noticed from my year-end list - no berlin-school music, very little what I would call 'space' music, a fair amount of dusty, loop music like Maps & Diagrams or Tapes & Topographies, several guitar based albums like Dave Depper, Dave Nelson, SUSS, and Devendra Banhart, and lastly, a lot of modern classical/modern composition albums from Mastrokristo & Alapastel to Max Richter and Viktor Orri Árnason and Glåsbird. That collection of favorites is nothing new for me. I've been a big fan of that dusty, noisy, loop-based style for a long time & as modern composition has grown over the years, so has my interest. Although, I may need to dive back into spacey, droney ambient like the stuff in the stargazing mixes. I guess there's not much else to say for this post other than here is part 2 of my favorite ambient albums of 2021. The moment I heard Rami Malek whisper "Mind awake, body asleep" (Mr Robot, series 2) I knew this would be the inspiration for a new mix. A mix about half-sleep, lucid dreaming impressions... ungraspable images... and about "letting go". After all, Mr. Robot's tagline was "Control is an Illusion". Control proved to be an illusion indeed, with these different, unrelated, fragments coming together like pieces of a puzzle, creating a mix "like its own cinematic score." It’s a beautiful chronicle, with its own special plot and emotional journey: 'For this mix I collected many fragments of music, dialogue and foley sounds which were taken directly from the films themselves and which I then arranged variously and carefully placed to construct some possible narrative. I always feel drawn to the most intimate moments within a film, most often I find it’s where the music and story hold the most emotion and poignancy. Curated by Ian Hawgood, this independent imprint running out of Japan has been responsible for many fantastic albums that have been featured in our Best of the Year lists since the inception of Headphone Commute. Two years ago I even published my own tribute to the label, At Home With Home Normal. Today, one of the label’s artists, Jara Tarnovski, recording under the alias Gurun Gurun, shares with us another great selection of tunes. Imagine yourself in deep sleep. Very deep sleep. Unaware of your surroundings, unable to control images built from memories, unable to distinguish your dreams from impressions originating from the outside world. At times, following a gentle sleep cycle, your consciousness slowly raises - almost up to the point of waking up. At these moments, the outside world is more perceptible, you're vaguely aware of what's happening around you. But not for long, because you gradually sink back to the realm of subconscious deep sleep. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- PLAYLIST: 00:00 Susanna and the Magical Orchestra - Hallelujah (stretched intro)- Melody Mountain, 2010, Rune Grammofon RCG 2057, 00:32 Able - The Circumpolar North- Migrations, 2010, Rope Swing Cities RSC04001:40 Cliff Child - Between Sides- Einn, 2010, Fruit Tree Records 03.27 Colin Potter & Michael Begg - Lymphoy a Precise Flight- Fragile Piches, 2010, Omnempathy OMIC104:47 Max Richter - When She Went Away- Elle s'appelait Sarah (OST), 2010, Editions Jade 06:27 Benjamin Dauer - Sense of Place- Burning of Wine, 2010, Distance Recordings, DIST01808:18 Gonjasufi - Candylane (filtered acapella)- 2010, unreleased08:50 Alan Lamb & Sarah Hopkins - Cello Chi- Sky Song, 1989, Vox Australis VAST012210:03 i8u - Gallowalking- Flowers Dragon's Eye Fourth Anniversary, 2010, Dragon's Eye DE600612:30 Bob Ohrum - Everytime I Close My Eyes- Elevated, 2010, Relaxed Machinery, rM_00413:40 Janek Schaefer - Exposure- Explorer's Club, 2010, Explorer's Club17:20 Federico Durand - Pudu, Tu Nombre Es Tobias- La Siesta Del Cipres, 2010, Spekk, KK:02318:51 David Velez - Division 1- Vacío Retórico, 2010, Audio Gourmet Netlabel AGN02023:26 Elian - Whispers, Then Silence- Whispers, Then Silence, 2010, Home Normal homen01725:58 Het Fukking Licht - Flutheelal- Kutplaneet, 2010, Narrominded NM03827:41 Fredo Viola - Lullabye- Soothing Sounds for Baby, 2010, Luvsound.org29:15 Joe Frawley - Apparition- Speak of This to No One, 2010, Joe Frawley Music JFM-CD0931:33 Benjamin Dauer - Contoured Silhouette- Burning of Wine, 2010, Distance Recordings, DIST01834:08 Listening Mirror - The Leechpool- ...After The Briefest of Pauses, 2010, Rural Colours rc00237:08 Brian McBride - Girl Nap- The Effective Disconnect, 2010, Kranky krank15039:04 Brian McBride - Mélodrames Télégraphies (in B Major 7Th) Part 2- The Effective Disconnect, 2010, Kranky krank15041:48 Herzog - K Lessgo- Coffee Break Ambient, 2010, Audio Gourmet Netlabel AGN02142:12 Max Richter - Time Piece- Elle s'appelait Sarah (OST), 2010, Editions Jade 42:59 Anna Rose Carter - A Mirror Sitting- Silver Lines, 2010, Schedios SCH_00245:10 Mark Rushton - Owlsketch- Three Sketches, 2010, Audio Gourmet Netlabel AGN01047:13 Slow Dancing Society - Love is on the Way- Under the Sodium Lights, 2010, Hidden Shoal Recordings HSR072 50:48 Gaston Aravelo - Marea- Marea, 2010, Passage pass 00451:58 Jonathan Uliel Saldanha - Rumor is Listening (In Verto)- The Earth as a Floating Egg, 2010, Soopa.org52:46 Dr. Jeffrey Thompson - Miranda- NASA Voyager I & II Space Probe Recordings, 1992, Psychoactive Audio Programs55:32 Ozy - Night Shift 33C- Duskscape Not Seen, 2010, Nothings66 N66CD00159:11 Christina Kubisch - "An Electrical Walk - Utrecht" (stretched sample)- Impakt Festival, Utrecht, 2010, unreleased private recording60:00 End

In the first few months of 2010, Ian Hawgood, the owner of Home Normal, bombarded my mailbox with envelopes full of promos, and my ears with sublime ambient bliss. In 2009, Hawgood managed to publish eight releases, and this year he’s already on the way with another five! I spent a whole weekend enveloped in drones, early morning soundscapes, and experimental ambient music. And then I came up with a way to thank Ian. The following is a one hour mix composed entirely out of my favorite selections from Home Normal releases. It’s a perfect label sampler, if you will, showcasing the artist roster from one of the important, up and coming labels.

It's the dead of winter, just trying to outlast the snow & cold, trying to make it to spring break. The music in this mix has a sort of lonely winter feel to it. The tracks are not too dark or depressing, they just seem to conger up images of vast, snowy landscapes. There are a few recordings in this mix from some of my recent favorite record labels. I'll just list some of those favorites... Low Point Experimedia Hibernate Under the Spire Home Normal Phantom Channel Dead Pilot Records Own Records Low Point, Phantom Channel, Home Normal, Infraction, Serein, 12k and Under the Spire all made it into the mix. Although no Hibernate recordings made it, I've really been enjoying all the output from them lately. Check out the releases from all these great labels. Next month I've got a mix coming out on Fluid Radio on MixCloud. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this newest mix.
