George Szell took over the Cleveland Orchestra in 1946, and, once he had created the instrument he needed, he started an extensive series of recordings for CBS (American Columbia, now Sony Classical). The focus was on the great works of the Austro-German repertoire and, needless to say, the nine Beethoven symphonies and a selection of overtures were among them (recorded between 1957 and 1967). Sony Classical have just gathered together the symphonies and overtures from the large 'George Szell Complete Columbia Collection' set from 2018, and are releasing them on seven CDs on December 13 and also digitally (already available). James Jolly went to talk to Gramophone's long-serving contributor Rob Cowan about the recordings, and also about George Szell as a conductor in general.

Leonard Bernstein (1918-90) was perhaps the most ‘complete' classical musician of the last century, as composer (covering everything from Broadway musicals to serial orchestral works), conductor (one of the 20th century's most admired), teacher or pianist. Edward Seckerson interviewed Bernstein for Gramophone in December 1989, but his admiration went back much further, as he reveals to James Jolly in this next instalment in our occasional series focusing on major composers. The music is drawn from Bernstein's extensive CBS catalogue, now available from Sony Classical.

SynopsisToday we honor one of America's greatest patrons of chamber music, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, who died on this date in 1953.Born in 1864, Elizabeth was the daughter of a wealthy wholesale grocer. She put her inheritance to good use. In 1924, she proposed to the Library of Congress that an auditorium be constructed in Washington, D.C., that would be dedicated to the performance of chamber music. A year later it was built, and Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress still stands today. Not content with just a superb venue for chamber music, Coolidge diligently commissioned new works to be played there. The list of important chamber pieces her foundation commissioned is impressive, and includes Bartok and Schoenberg string quartets, the original chamber versions of Copland's Appalachian Spring, Stravinsky's Apollo ballets, and modern works by American composers as diverse as Samuel Barber, Milton Babbitt, George Crumb and John Corigliano.Coolidge was an amateur composer and accomplished pianist. Her passion for music and enthusiasm for the creation of new works was all the more remarkable considering that tragically she battled deafness from her mid-30s.Music Played in Today's ProgramIgor Stravinsky (1882 – 1971) Apollo ballet; Stockholm Chamber Orchestra; Esa-Pekka Salonen, cond. SynopsisOn today's date in 1955, Leopold Stokowski gave his first concert as the new music director of the Houston Symphony — or, as Stoki pronounced it, the “Hooston Symphony.” It was a major cultural event in those days. NBC even televised a bit of the famously white-maned conductor rehearsing the Texans in a brand-new work that Stokowski had commissioned for the occasion: the second symphony of Alan Hovhaness, subtitled Mysterious Mountain. At the time, Hovhaness explained his subtitle as follows: “Mountains are symbols, like pyramids, of man's attempt to know God. Mountains are symbolic meeting places between the mundane and spiritual worlds.” The new piece proved to be a terrific success for all concerned. The next day, the Houston Post's music critic wrote, “The real mystery of Mysterious Mountain is that it should be so simple, sweetly, innocently lovely in an age that has tried so terribly hard to avoid those impressions in music.” For his part, Hovhaness once said, “Things that are complicated tend to disappear and get lost. Simplicity is difficult, not easy.”Before his death in 2000, Hovhaness would complete 67 symphonies.Music Played in Today's ProgramAlan Hovhaness (1911 – 2000) Symphony No. 2 (Mysterious Mountain) - London Symphony; John Williams, cond. SynopsisSay the phrase “BBC Proms” to most music lovers, and they'll conjure up a mental image of the rowdy “Last Night of the Proms” at which normally staid and reserved Britons don funny hats and make rude noises during Sir Henry Wood's arrangement of British sailor songs. But the raucous “Last Night of the Proms” is only the festive finale of several weeks of fairly serious music making: dozens of concerts covering a wide range of old and new musicFrom the very beginning of the Proms in 1895, Sir Henry, who started the whole thing, had this specific agenda: “I am going to run nightly concerts to train the public in easy stages,” he explained. “Popular at first, gradually raising the standard until I have created a public for classical and modern music.”On today's date in 1996, for example, violinist Gidon Kremer premiered a brand-new violin concerto by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho at a Proms concert. The work had an unusual title—Grail Theater. “I like the unusual combination of these two words,” explained Saariaho, “because it represents two such different things. SynopsisOn today's date in 1959, Leonard Bernstein celebrated his 41st birthday in Moscow. The New York Philharmonic was embarked on an extensive world tour, which included three weeks in the Soviet Union.Their August 25th concert proved controversial, offering two works of Igor Stravinsky, a composer still condemned in the Soviet Union as “bourgeois” and “decadent.” Even more daring, Bernstein opened his concert with “The Unanswered Question,” a short piece by the American composer, Charles Ives.Even worse, Bernstein broke traditional Soviet protocol by talking directly to the audience through an interpreter, explaining Ives' unusual philosophy of music. The enthusiastic audience response after the Ives led to it being encored. This really upset the Soviet authorities, and the music critic of the Ministry of Culture wrote, “Before this four-minute piece Bernstein spoke for six minutes. Only the good manners of the hospitable public resulted in a ripple of cool applause. Nevertheless, the conductor, setting modesty aside, himself suggested that the piece be repeated.”Bernstein, although furious at what he called “an unforgivable lie,” was persuaded to forgo any further controversial lectures from the podium for the remainder of the Soviet tour.Music Played in Today's ProgramCharles Ives (1874 – 1954) The Unanswered Question New York Philharmonic; Leonard Bernstein, conductor. SynopsisOn today's date in 1992, lovers of the tango had good reason to be sad. The great Argentinean composer and bandoneón virtuoso Astor Piazzolla had died in Buenos Aires at the age of 71.Now, the bandoneón is a close relation of the accordion, and for it Piazzolla composed new music inspired by the tango, an Argentinian dance form that originated in working-class dancehalls. While still a teenager, Piazzolla had played bandoneón in the orchestra of Carlos Gardél, the most famous tango singer of the 1930s. Eventually, Piazzolla formed his own band, which became famous throughout South America. But Piazzolla had a burning desire to write concert music, and won a scholarship to study composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. She encouraged him to explore the possibilities inherent in the music he knew best, and so Piazzolla set about “reinventing” the tango. The result was dubbed “nuevo tango,” as vital as the old ones, but often dark and brooding. When asked why these “new tangos” were so melancholy, Piazzolla replies. "Not because I'M sad,” Piazzolla replied. “Not at all.  I'm a happy guy.  … No, my music is sad because the TANGO is sad — sad and dramatic, but not pessimistic.”Music Played in Today's ProgramAstor Piazzolla (1921 - 1992) Tres minutos con la realidad Nestor Marconi, bandoneon; Yo Yo Ma, cello; ensemble Sony Classical 63122

In the past, traditionally only the biggest orchestras released recordings, and historically only via labels like Sony Classical or Deutsche Grammophon, but this is a big area where the narrative has changed. Now, ensembles of any size can release recordings across a multitude of platforms. In this episode, Aubrey is joined by two experts — Mike Warner, Head of Editorial Marketing Partnerships North America at Believe, and Jamie Freedman, Head of Classical Programming at Pandora — to talk us through the play by play (stream by stream) on how any ensemble can take advantage of the way recording and distribution has changed. They cover topics including how an ensemble can self-release, how an organization can be empowered to do yourself things a label historically or traditionally would have done and have more control because of it, how the artistic, production, and marketing teams will need to work together, and the nuts and bolts of releasing music directly vs going with a distributor. And if you don't know what all that means or looks like, that's ok too — the whole point of this episode is to learn so you walk away educated and informed. And therefore confident and ready to tackle your next recording project knowing exactly how you'll get maximum ears to listen to it.

The album follows up on the soprano's Sony Classical debut, an aria recital entitled “Rachel,” released last year to unanimous international praise. Germany's Das Opernglas noted that “Willis-Sørensen sings marvelously with her beautifully shimmering, silvery, well-rounded soprano voice, whose slight vibrato enhances the emotions expressed.” While Gramophone Magazine recommended the album as “a rewarding and intelligent debut from a very fine singer”. French classical magazine L'Opéra praised her as “An uncommon talent, able to rival the best examples of the past”.TRACKLISTRICHARD STRAUSS 1864–1949 Four Last Songs / Vier letzte Lieder TrV 296 Four Last Songs 1. Synopsis On today's date in 1946, Leonard Bernstein conducted the American premiere of Benjamin Britten's opera, "Peter Grimes," at the Tanglewood Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts. "Peter Grimes" had received its very first performance in London the previous year, and had already been staged elsewhere in Europe before reaching America. In fact, this quintessentially British opera was originally an American commission from the Koussevitzky Foundation run by the famous conductor and music patron Serge Koussevitzky, who was the founder and guiding spirit of the Tanglewood Festival. Opera News covered the American premiere with a feature titled "Peter Grimes On Trial – A Symposium of Verdicts," beginning by quoting with the grudging praise of the New York Times' very conservative critic that the opera was "a very interesting modern work in a provocative form." Also included were quotes from the lead singers, who noted its "strange intervals, harmonies, and difficult counter-play of the various voices." But Boris Goldowsky, the music director of the Tanglewood Center, provided the most accurate assessment, given the hindsight of history: "The opera has lasting merit," said Goldovsky, "and it will join the standard repertory. Like all new works, it was difficult at first, but future productions will be easier." Here's an additional historical footnote: the Tanglewood premiere of "Peter Grimes" was the first opera Leonard Bernstein conducted professionally, and the opera's instrumental "Sea Interludes" were on the program of the last orchestral concert he ever conducted, 44 years later, in August of 1990, and again at Tanglewood. Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered John Williams's Second Violin Concerto, written for her, in Boston in July 2021 and DG recorded the work shortly after. One of the most listened-to composers on the planet, thanks to his peerless film scores, Williams has long been drawn the concerto as a form, and has written for many great musicians, including Gil Shaham and Yo-Yo Ma.  James Jolly caught up with John Williams by phone earlier this year to talk about the new violin concerto, Williams's concert music and his love of conducting.  John Williams features on the cover of the July issue of Gramophone, out on June 10. Andrew Farach-Colton writes about Williams's concert music and we review the new DG recording of the Second Violin Concerto as well as Yo-Yo Ma's new Sony Classical recording of the revised version of John Williams's Cello Concerto.

Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique. Among those who discovered these talents was Alfred Brendel, who has encouraged the young pianist. A holder of scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, she completed her studies with Professor Pavel Gililov in her adopted home of Cologne in 2013, passing her Concert Examination with Distinction. She rounded out her training with Professor Arie Vardi and Professor Dmitri Bashkirov. Olga Scheps now performs with great success in world-famous concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Cadogan Hall London, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Suntory Hall Tokyo. She is a sought-after guest at festivals like the Rheingau Musik Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Kissinger Sommer, Heidelberger Frühling, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, MDR Musiksommer, Lucerne Festival am Piano, ACHTBRÜCKEN Festival in Cologne, Mozart Festival Würzburg, Mersin Festival in Turkey, and Menuhin Festival Gstaad. Since 2009 Olga Scheps has been an exclusive Sony Classical artist. Her debut album ‘Chopin' immediately won an ECHO Klassik award. The two recordings that followed, ‘Russian Album' (2010) and ‘Schubert' (2012), were also highly praised by the press. Her fourth Sony Classical CD was released early in 2014 and features Chopin's Piano Concertos nos. 1 and 2 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The success of her solo-album ‘Vocalise', published in 2015, was surpassed by her latest album ‘Satie' which Olga Scheps has recorded on the occasion of the French composer's 150th birthday: It reached top 1 of the German classical music charts at first go. Her CD "Tchaikovsky" was released in October 2017 and she broke new ground with the album "100 % Scooter - Piano Only", on which she recorded arrangements of the most famous Scooter hits by Sven Helbig. In March 2019 Olga Scheps' album “Melody” was released, containing pieces spanning four centuries, from Bach to Aphex Twin. Her recording of the Weinberg Piano Quintet with the Kuss Quartet was released in late 2019. Olga Scheps is a Steinway Artist. Steve Wood has lived a rich musical life, full of synchronicities. Leading like a lucid dream from one expression to the next, always guided by both his inner voice and a buoyant, or dare I say, defiant spirit accepting only passion as a course of action. His joie de vivre is both evident and shining as ever as this wonderfully accomplished rock musician, turned IMAX wunderkind composer, walks you through his storied and fascinating life. What a pleasure it is to bring this interview with the Wizard of the big screen to light! At age 14 Steve Wood was living the young surfer's dream of living on the beach in Newport Beach, California where he could surf every day before and after (and sometimes during) school.  His world came crashing down when his father was transferred to Dallas, Texas.  Not knowing what to do when he got there, he bought his first guitar and started a band.  Two years later he had a number 4 record on the local charts and he had stumbled onto his life's path.  Moving back to California he played in a variety of local bands for a couple of years until he founded the band Honk which composed the soundtrack for Greg MacGillivray's iconic surfing movie “Five Summer Stories”.  A song from that movie became number 1 in Hawaii and soon Honk had a major recording contract and was touring with The Beach Boys, Loggins and Messina and Chicago.  Several years later Steve became the keyboard player and musical director for Kenny Loggins, a position he held for 10 years.  During that time he wrote several chart making songs with Kenny and helped produce several hits including “Footloose”.In the meantime Greg MacGillivray shifted from surf movies to become the most successful IMAX documentary film maker in history.  He tapped Steve to compose scores for 30 of his films including “Everest”, “The Living Sea” and “Dolphins”.  Steve's work earned him 8 “Best Score” awards, the most by any composer and allowed him to work with Sting, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, The Moody Blues, Dave Matthews Band and Brian May of Queen along with a host of others.Among his other accomplishments are his Clio Award winning work with Stevie Wonder and his production and composition work for Sony Classical artists. He composed, recorded and mixed the music for 2 PBS specials filmed at the Colosseum in Rome and ancient Agora Amphitheater in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is currently composing and working with his wife Beth Fitchet Wood, a gifted singer songwriter. He is also producing an upcoming series of live streams of gifted up and coming musicians from high schools from around Orange County, California with Laguna Beach Live where he is a board member.
