Tonight on Triple Feature, Mark Radulich and Mac Kettner embark on a cinematic journey through the bold, genre-bending filmography of the Wachowski Sisters, tracing their artistic evolution from the noir-tight thriller Bound (1996), through the ambitious, time-hopping epic Cloud Atlas (2012), to the sprawling, space-operatic chaos of Jupiter Ascending (2015).We begin with Bound, their directorial debut—a lean, tightly constructed neo-noir starring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly. While remembered today for its stylized depiction of a lesbian relationship and its feminist reversal of genre tropes, the film also laid the groundwork for the Wachowskis' signature style: sharp visual framing, subversive gender politics, and a meticulous blend of genre tradition and rebellion. Critics at the time praised its confidence and tension, and it's since become a cult classic, often cited for how it queered the crime genre with both sensuality and grit.Fast forward to Cloud Atlas, a deeply ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell's novel. Co-directed with Tom Tykwer, the film features a sprawling ensemble cast—Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Doona Bae—playing multiple interconnected roles across six timelines. Aesthetic maximalism meets spiritual recursion here: past lives, future consequences, and the collapse of individual identity into something larger. The film was divisive, praised for its ambition but criticized for its complex structure and controversial use of makeup. Still, in retrospect, Cloud Atlas is regarded as a turning point—a declaration that the Wachowskis were more interested in ideas than in simple spectacle. Finally, we crash into Jupiter Ascending—a wildly uneven, endlessly fascinating space opera starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum. The film throws genetic royalty, flying rollerblades, Eddie Redmayne whisper-shouting, and bureaucratic intergalactic dynasties into a blender. It's messy, no doubt. But it's also unmistakably Wachowskian: rich with metaphor, post-capitalist critique, and gendered power struggles wrapped in ridiculous sci-fi fantasy. It was largely panned upon release, but like much of their work, Jupiter Ascending has developed a loyal fanbase who see past the surface chaos to the emotional and thematic sincerity underneath.Through these three films, we trace the Wachowski Sisters' cinematic transformation: from intimate noir storytellers to high-concept philosophers to unapologetically maximalist dreamers. No matter the box office or Rotten Tomatoes score, their work consistently pushes boundaries—of genre, identity, and cinematic form itself. So buckle in. We're talking legacy, aesthetics, ideas, and all the gloriously weird stuff in between.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Matt, aka the Black Country Vlogger, has chosen the iconic Run Lola Run from 1998 this week. Checkout Matt's vlog here: https://www.youtube.com/@BlackCountryVlogger The production of Run Lola Run was a testament to director Tom Tykwer's innovative vision and determination to push the boundaries of German cinema. Filmed predominantly in Berlin, the movie leveraged the city's vibrant and modern aesthetic to create an urban, pulsating backdrop for the story. Tykwer's use of kinetic camera work and rapid editing, combined with a blend of live-action and animated sequences, gave the film its distinct and high-energy style. The unique visual approach was complemented by a techno-heavy soundtrack, composed by Tykwer and collaborators Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, which underscored the tension and pace of Lola's journey. These creative choices not only shaped the film's unique identity but also aligned with the burgeoning techno culture of 1990s Berlin. Casting was a critical aspect of the production, with Franka Potente taking on the physically demanding role of Lola. Her fiery red hair, a decision made during pre-production, became an iconic visual marker of the film. The production schedule was tight, requiring a mix of meticulous planning and on-the-spot improvisation to capture the dynamic movement through the city. Tykwer's hands-on approach and collaboration with his team ensured that the film's technical challenges—like its seamless transitions between timelines—were executed flawlessly. Released to critical acclaim, Run Lola Run became a breakout success internationally, cementing its reputation as a modern classic and demonstrating the potential of German cinema to innovate on a global stage. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week on "Shat the Movies," we're sprinting into the energetic world of Run Lola Run (1998)! Join us as we follow the heart-pounding journey of Lola, played by Franka Potente, as she races against time to save her boyfriend in a series of electrifying scenarios. We'll explore the film's innovative storytelling, stunning visuals, and the pulse-pounding soundtrack that keep you on the edge of your seat. From the high-stakes decisions to the alternate realities, this film redefines the action genre in a unique way. Whether you're revisiting this stylish classic or experiencing it for the first time, get ready for a fast-paced discussion that highlights the thrill of running against the clock! Plot Summary: In the 1998 German thriller Run Lola Run, directed by Tom Tykwer, Franka Potente stars as Lola, a young woman who embarks on a heart-pounding race against time to save her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). Manni, a low-level criminal, loses 100,000 Deutsche Marks in a botched money drop for his gangster boss. With only 20 minutes to find the money and prevent Manni from committing a desperate robbery, Lola is thrown into a frantic quest through the streets of Berlin. The film's narrative structure is one of its most unique features, unfolding in three different versions of the same story. Each version explores how small changes in Lola's actions and timing lead to drastically different outcomes. Whether by chance encounters, split-second decisions, or twists of fate, each run has profound consequences, shaping the lives of Lola, Manni, and the people they encounter. The film masterfully blends live-action sequences with animated inserts, set to an energetic techno soundtrack that drives the relentless pace. Tykwer's innovative use of time loops and alternative storylines keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, turning what could have been a simple rescue mission into a philosophical exploration of fate, chance, and the power of individual decisions. As Lola sprints through the city, encountering obstacles and allies, Run Lola Run keeps audiences captivated with its kinetic energy, visual style, and themes of love, loyalty, and determination. The film's fast-paced, high-stakes action, combined with its unconventional storytelling, has made it a cult favorite. Join our podcast review as we dive into this adrenaline-fueled thriller, discussing its groundbreaking narrative structure, stunning visuals, and whether its pulse-pounding excitement still resonates with modern audiences. Franka Potente never became a bonafide movie star after Run Lola Run, but her intensely iconic work in this breakout movie remains awesome 25 years later. Tom Tykwer has had a solid career of his own since writing and directing this video-game-esque flick with the butterfly-effect gimmick. He and future collaborators the Wachowskis were making some of the coolest movies around back then, taking advantage of new technologies, narrative devices and editing techniques. In truth, while Tykwer clearly loves Potente, he doesn't do so right by Moritz Bleibtreu's Manni (and the first part of the man's last name rhymes with "tribe" by the way, not "leeb"). Bleibtreu is a whiny screw-up who needs his dedicated girlfriend to save his life by racing around Germany for 20 minutes to come up with a small fortune. Lather, rinse, repeat. Here's the hard truth about MBC, according to advocacy and research organization Metavivor: In the US alone, an estimated 42,360 women and 530 men will die from the disease in 2023—117 per day. And despite the optimism around early detection and prevention that infuses “Pinktober” and its focus on survivorship, one in three diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will eventually progress to become metastatic. Only 10% are metastatic at their first breast MBC diagnosis. This painful and sobering reality—that so many of us ultimately develop the kind of breast cancer that kills—needs to be part of the annual month-long conversation about breast cancer. Most importantly, it should help to guide decisions about how breast cancer research funds are invested. Shockingly, the estimated share of breast cancer research dollars that go to MBC is 5%. And while new treatments are extending survival for many with MBC, the disease is still terminal. To live with your own diagnosis or to be a loved one, caregiver, or friend of someone with MBC is to inhabit a community of loss. Every day, we confront the reality of mortality and struggle to balance fear with hope, and sorrow with joy. “We Remember” is OMBCL's opportunity to give voice to the profound grief we share and to honor and celebrate each person we've lost. It's a chance to express our gratitude for the extraordinary and unique ways they made our lives richer. And it is also an opportunity to channel some of our grief, fear, and anger into advocacy for the attention, support, and research needed to truly put us on the Road to a Cure.MUSIC CREDITS:'Memories' by Maroon 5'Mandy Love Theme' by Jóhann Jóhannsson'Season Suite: Late Winter, Early Spring' by John Denver 'Fly Me To The Moon' by Frank Sinatra 'Rêverie, L 68' by Claude Debussy 'Songbird' by Fleetwood Mac'All Boundaries Are Conventions' by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, and Reinhold Heil

Welcome back to PPM. Subscribe to the Patreon to access ASFA (Pt. V): patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping Hop on the Hindenburg & pop over to Babylon Berlin, where we will use BB character Dr. Anno Schmidt as a prism thru which we can examine a handful of historical hypno valences, the subliminal undercurrent gurgling through the National Socialistic discharge of Weimar Germany. In today's EP, we discuss: Necessary Babylon Berlin exposition; protagonists - Vice & later Homicide Detective Gereon Rath (which I accidentally keep mispronouncing in this EP) & the assistant gumshoe Charlotte; we break down Dr. Schmidt's inhumane experiments w/ the methamphetamine Pervitin on weasels, wolves, & even humans; foreshadows of the Nazi weaponization of psychoactive drugs to program their shock troops into fearless Übermensch-berserkers; Dr. Schmidt's Institute for Suggestive Therapy (hypno-suggestive title there), where he uses hypnosis to treat WWI vets, morphine addicts, & the homeless; points of reference for Dr. Schmidt's character: Erik Jan Hanussen, Dr. Max Nonne, & Dr. Mabuse from Fritz Lang films; some antecedents of the rise of Nazism—economic imperialism, residual wartime mass trauma, cultural hegemony, mass manipulation; night club Moka Efti, which actually existed; themes of automatism, transhumanism, & Social Darwinism; Gereon's fraught relationship w/ his brother Dr. Schmidt; wartime service together; S1 & S2 bookended w/ scenes of Gereon being hypnotized by Schmidt; Dr. Schmidt's name = real life Dr. Heinrich Schmidt, a wretched SS member & "First Camp Physician" at Buchenwald, Dachau, etc.; the real life Schmidt's prosecution post-WWII; accusations against him, including that he murdered 8 ppl by withholding care & the selection of gas chambers; the fact that real Dr. Schmidt may have been acquitted, in part, because of his repeated collaboration w/ the Allies immediately following the war—including acting as a witness in the Bergen-Belsen Trials & the fact that he worked as "Senior Doctor" at the Allied-run Bergen-Belsen Displaced Persons Camp immediately following Nazi surrender  Alt., we consider Dr. Schmidt as allusion to Ernst Schmidt, a fellow messenger that was present on a dangerous courier mission when a Brit grenade exploded & shot shrapnel into Lance Corporal Hitler's leg; we compare this incident to the crucial moment of Gereon's abandonment of his brother Dr. Schmidt in no man's land; Schmidt brings us to Hitler's near-death in the Maximillian II barracks after the war, when he Freikorps executed 1 out of 10 soldiers stationed there for suspicions of being Red Army; Hitler spying; a Palm Sunday Putsch reference; further similarities between Dr. Anno Schmidt & Hitler, including their respective gas attacks & interest in the occult; speaking of which, Dr. Schmidt is a member of the Fraternitas Saturni; the nightmarish mustard gas lung "sloughing" effect; we explore the Black Reichswehr; we juxtapose the Black Reichswehr & Freikorps w/ the American Legion; we compare the dinner that Gereon attends at his fascist Polizei partner Bruno's house & the "stab-in-the-back" myths promulgated during it to W.D. Pelley's antisemitism; direct connections b/w Black Reichswehr & Nazis; the Küstrin Putsch & attempt to overthrow Gustav Stresemann's administration; Gereon's partner Bruno's name probably being a reference to Black Reichswehr commando Bruno Buchrucker; a possible connection b/w paramilitaries & hypnotherapy in the show... via the Black Reichswehr's primary funder, the German industrialist fail-son Alfred Nyssen (who is definitely a composite of Thyssen & Krupp); Nyssen is a manic depressive & his doktor is—you guessed it—Anno Schmidt.
