Uisce (pronounced "ish-ka," the Irish word for "water") is the sole full-length album by Australian band Non-Intentional Lifeform (N.I.L.), released in 1997 by Roadrunner Records. Two books of essays consider the female experience through different stages of life. First, Kate Kennedy's One in a Millennial documents coming of age as a member of a highly-scrutinized generation. Her book explores the origins of millennial stereotypes and pop culture, but also focuses on the way that shared experiences of girlhood are often dismissed as frivolous. In today's episode, Kennedy joins NPR's Juana Summers for a conversation that touches on AOL Instant Messenger, college pre-games, and self-editing our own desires. We then hear from Jenny Slate about her new book Lifeform, a compilation of experimental essays that follow her life through five phases: Single, True Love, Pregnancy, Baby, and Ongoing. Slate joined Here & Now's Emiko Tamagawa at a live event in Boston, where the two discussed the confidence it takes to write down our ideas, fear and bravery in love, and Slate's perspective on childbirth and motherhood. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Today we're bouncing off our recent conversation with evolutionary biologist, Dr. Michael Lachmann from SFI, and unpacking why the modern definition of life sucks and why it matters. We attempt to construct a more scientific (i.e. less circular) definition of life and take it for a walk in the park. As a test case we examine an inadvertent hypothesis, which stems from Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker, a science fiction work that supposes stars themselves have an interior life and that when they move according to gravity they are simply doing the dance of a school of fishes or drivers on a freeway. We pull out cases where the stars satisfy a scientific definition of life and also problems with the theory. The notion forces us to reconsider the limits of life and its possible forms in the universe. The actor, writer and comedian Jenny Slate (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Obvious Child) isn't afraid to bare it all in projects that are vulnerable, frank and touching. In her whimsical new book of essays, “Lifeform,” Jenny writes about meeting her husband and having her first child during the pandemic. Jenny joins Tom Power to talk about the book and her thoughts on motherhood. Plus, she reads one of her essays for us.

Comedian, actor, and author Jenny Slate joins us to discuss her new collection of essays, Lifeform, about love and new motherhood. Jenny will be speaking tomorrow night at Town Hall.

Jenny Slate is ready to be herself. “I think what is [evident] in my work is that through my own journey, not just through motherhood, but my own connection with myself as a developing artist, is that I just don't feel myself flailing anymore.” She's writing about this confidence in her new book of essays Lifeform (Little, Brown and Company, October 22), which depicts her unique journey into motherhood. She began writing the book out of a fear for losing her old self: “Just wanting to hold on to a life, my professional life and my identity within that, because I was very newly pregnant.” She found that it wasn't her old self she was looking for, but this new person. “I feel that I increasingly have things to say, but really little to prove. And that is such a different thing. I don't feel a desperation that I felt in my 20s and 30s.” And now, the comedian says, this new self is providing her with strength. “I have noticed whether I'm doing stand-up or I'm writing a book, I just have this sense, for the first time in my life, that there's a super nice, stable mommy in the room, and the mom is me.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Listen Now to Dr. Jonathan Trent Transcript Interestingly Dr. Trent had his start in oceanography and the study of small water-based lifeforms at UCSC back in the 1970’s as an undergraduate. Later at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a post doc in Germany at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry he became one of the world’s experts in how biology was able to adapt to the most extreme conditions on Earth imaginable. He was brought back home to NASA Ames, where he, as an astrobiologist delved deeply into how such life might exist elsewhere in the solar system. NASA did an extensive interview of his career, posted here. Dr. Jonathan Trent Now, semi-retired in the Santa Cruz area, he brings home his knowledge of extreme forms of life in creating solutions to some of our biggest issues of today, namely the escalating food, water, and energy crisis. His latest project is called “UpCycle Systems,” and its goal is to create a cohesive green life support system for our growing need of Data Centers, places that are needed for cloud computing, AI, Crypto, memory storage, etc. In Dr. Trent’s vision, data centers will not simply use massive amounts of water and power, they will generate such resources by turning our organic waste into clean power and water, with excess energy to share. This works through the combination of several innovative technologies, including bioreactors and fuel cells. I think you’ll enjoy hearing Dr. Trent’s story, we sure did! Enjoy.. UpCycle Data Centers that will contribute clean water and energy to the community instead of taking it.
This interview is an episode from @The-Well, our publication about ideas that inspire a life well-lived, created with the @JohnTempletonFoundation. Watch more from Robert Hazen ► • The missing law of nature, and how we... According to leading mineralogist Bob Hazen, minerals may hold the key for discovering if we actually are alone in the universe. He highlights how Earth's dramatic increase in mineral diversity—from 2000 to over 6000 types—aligned with the emergence of life, which drastically altered our planet's atmosphere and chemical processes. Knowing this, scientists can now look for specific clues in minerals as they study other planets. If another planet, such as Mars, were to have similar biosignatures, it could be a clear indicator that it harbored life at some point in time. This method would not only help us discover if life existed on other planets, but, depending on the specific similarities, could tell us how closely this life resembled our own, and could prove how unique humanity truly is. ------------------------------------------ About Robert Hazen: Robert Hazen is a renowned American mineralogist and geologist, known for his pioneering work in mineral evolution and mineral ecology. He is a Senior Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution's Geophysical Laboratory and a Professor of Earth Sciences at George Mason University. Hazen has written over 400 articles and 25 books, contributing research as a profound leader in mineral evolution and mineral ecology. His studies delve into the complex interactions between minerals and life, contributing to our understanding of Earth's history and the potential for life on other planets. Hazen is also a passionate educator and science communicator. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About The Well Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life's biggest questions, and that's why they're the questions occupying the world's brightest minds. My special guest is Simeon Hein here to discuss his book called Dark Matter Monsters. You can add it to your collection now from Amazon from your local book store! - f Bigfoot is an Ancient Primate or an Undiscovered Human, why is the Creature Seen Around Balls of Light and Other Paranormal Phenomena? Thousands of people have witnessed bigfoot and other strange creatures for decades in North America and worldwide. In many cases, these encounters have been followed up and documented, including physical evidence by trained investigators. Is bigfoot an undiscovered primate, a relic hominid, or an alien species? And why are so many encounters also filled with unusual and extraordinary phenomena like luminosities, time slips, and telepathic interactions? Dark Matter Monsters examines critical, new scientific findings in coherent energy-matter and how these ideas help explain seemingly paranormal phenomena, like space-time anomalies and orbs, seen around creatures such as bigfoot and other mysterious cryptids. Are cryptids related to ball lightning and orbs? Coherent matter was a subject of interest to inventor Nicola Tesla over one hundred years ago and many researchers, such as Fleischmann and Pons, who did cold fusion experiments at the University of Utah in the late 1980s. Japanese, American and Russian scientists like Takaaki Matsumoto, Kenneth Shoulders, and Alexander Parkhomov have seen similar results. Discover: What often happens right before a bigfoot encounter and why How bigfoot creatures can morph or become invisible How social stigma prevents us from talking about these phenomena Sudden temperature changes around bigfoot, orbs, and UFOs The connection between the Fifth State of Matter and ball lightning Strange space-time anomalies experienced around bigfoot creatures How a Midwestern town in the US mysteriously suffered a short-term total electromagnetic collapse How weird gravitational effects are caused by ball lightning Unexplained camera and battery failure around cryptids and crop circles Why a Pentagon Program called AAWSAP researched cryptids at Skinwalker Ranch The book begins with a look at cosmological dark matter, which has yet to be identified but appears to occupy some 34 percent of the universe as a source of cryptids' strange and remarkable abilities. One candidate for explaining dark matter is relic neutrinos produced in huge quantities during the Big Bang. Relic neutrinos interact with biological organisms on Earth and might explain why creatures like bigfoot seem to possess remarkable abilities such as extraordinary speed, strength, cloaking, and can generate orbs and ball lightning. The author also delves into how coherent matter relates to fractals, the Pentagon's AAWSAP Program, research at Skinwalker Ranch, and sudden battery and technology malfunctions around cryptids, cold fusion/LENR experiments, and crop circles. Other subjects covered include how social stigma is attached to these and related topics like Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UAP) encountered by the US Navy and why that makes it harder for witnesses to report such encounters. It contains new witness accounts of cryptid encounters, never shared before.

Listen now to 63 Future Now Podcast It appears we may have some new lifeforms on the planet, ones that can take Nitrogen from the air rather than the ground; makes sense considering that 78% of the atmosphere is Nitrogen. Scientists are fascinated, and see this as a big deal, up there with the creation of plants and animals! Also amazing this week is our exploration of interspecies communications and its intersection with AI. Yes, contact with critters of all kinds will soon be happening, with AI serving as a kind of Rosetta Stone between us and the myriad of other intelligences that live on this planet. A fascinating development in trans species communications, with many unexpected twists and turns to come! Meanwhile, we have successfully used optics for communicating for the first time with a space probe 130 million miles away, and are testing a new kind of space propulsion system that is non-reactive! Just wow!! Enjoy..

Is human civilization fundamentally mistaken about the nature of plants? Emerging evidence reveals complex behaviors and communication abilities in flora, provoking profound questions. Might plants possess a collective intelligence coordinating adaption on a planetary scale? Have psychotropic plant chemicals co-evolved to subtly influence animal cognition for floral advantage? Off we go! Off to watch Wild Blue Yonder! Don't worry, I won't turn this entire synopsis into a song! It's far too early for that. But this week we watched the 2nd of the 60th Anniversary Specials: Wild Blue Yonder! In which we learn the value in not knowing everything that's going to happen in a story before it airs. And it was freakin' bonkers as The Doctor and Donna land on a ship out at the edge of the universe where something (some...not-things) are trying to get in. And what ensues in a visually stunning adventures in which our beloved actors really get to work double duty!

We continue our Sonic Boomers series by speaking to one of the first Sonic cosplayers I ever saw on the internet, Sonic The Cosplayer. Sonic the Cosplayer has built an impressive following through his unique and creative brand of cosplay-ception. Ever wondered what Sonic would do if he was into cosplay, this guy has your curiosity covered. We discuss the first Sonic games that made us go "Ok I'm into this franchise", the first cosplay he ever created and also reflect on how the internet has evolved around it all. Check out Sonic The Cosplayer at https://www.instagram.com/sonicthecosplayer Like the podcast? Let us know, give a review/rating and tag in social media! I will admit, the title here is a bit of click bait. In the early 1950s a researcher named Nils Aall Barricelli started in on a bold project. His goal was to simulate evolution on a computer and, in doing so, create a perfect lab to study evolutionary processes. What he found was astonishing. Given a simple rule set these interesting patterns emerged. He called them symbioorganisms. Despite being simple numeric constructs, they exhibited many properties of living things. Did Barricelli create a digital form of life? Selected Sources: https://sci-hub.se/10.1007/BF01556771 - Numerical Testing of Evolution Theories. Please, just read this paper and be amazed!
