Couch Potato Theater: THE SURE THING (1985) Watch: Fandom Podcast Network YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/@FandomPodcastNetwork Listen: Couch Potato Theater Audio Podcast Link: https://fpnet.podbean.com/category/couch-potato-theater Welcome to Couch Potato Theater, where we celebrate our favorite movies on the Fandom Podcast Network! On this episode we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the cult classic and very underrated teen 80's rom com, THE SURE THING (1985). Plot: College freshman Walter (Gib) Gibson decides to go cross country to visit his friend in California during winter break. Awaiting there is a bikini-clad babe whom his friend assures him is a "sure thing". Meanwhile, Allison, a cute (but somewhat retentive) girl at Gib's college has also decided to head out to Cal. to see her boyfriend during break. Gib and Allison are thrust together on a road trip from hell, and somewhere along the way, they find each others company to be tolerable. Now, what will become of Gib's "sure thing?" The Sure Thing is a 1985 American romantic comedy Christmas road film directed by Rob Reiner and starring John Cusack, Daphne Zuniga, Viveca Lindfors, and Nicollette Sheridan. The film chronicles the cross-country journey of college students Walter Gibson (Cusack) and Alison Bradbury (Zuniga) as they make their way from New England to Los Angeles over Christmas break, each in an effort to meet their ideal romantic match. Released theatrically in the spring of 1985, The Sure Thing received mostly favorable reviews from film critics, who commended it for its traditional comedic structure, with some likening it to a modern version of Frank Capra's It Happened One Night (1934), though Reiner himself stated that the parallels between the two films were unintentional. The Sure Thing (1985), Something Wild (1986), Lars and the Real Girl (2007). This week, Janet, John, (and Pen) explore three amazing films starring young actors who all got their big break and became movie stars who are to this day still giving astounding performances. Their break through movies in the 80's look at love with a slightly wacky angle; one man wants to just find a girl to end his virginity, another takes off with a total stranger to his near demise while our final tale of love has a young man dealing with grief in a very "plastic" way. Madrid's Jan Swam joins our series with a potent delivery of centrifugal, sub-heavy psychedelia. At the helm of the Organic Signs label and its annual Refractor Festival, Jan Swam is a guiding force in the realm of modern sonic exploration, in constant pursuit of new avenues for mental metamorphosis through his boundary-pushing platforms and his own exquisite productions. We finally connected at last year's Positive Education festival, bonding over our appreciation for expansive dance floor experiences and a shared love of certain records nearly lost to time. It's a pleasure to share this mix in which every turn is carefully considered, where rhythms contort beneath the surface and the mind's textures become obscured within smoke. Across the world of construction and trades, failure to secure payment for work done and materials purchased is probably the biggest and most common threat to any company's survival. The system of bonds, liens and sureties we rely on to safeguard contractors and subcontractors can be so arcane that many of us simply don't bother – and take on massive risk in doing so. Steve Ness of SAC says the system can be made to work for you and joins GlassTalk to explain how. He also addresses the persistent myth that the Ontario court's Earth Boring decision has undermined surety bonds.
Cio D'Or hardly requires an introduction, having long stood as both a pillar of our scene and a source of inspiration for so many. Over the course of her singular and decades-spanning career, the Cologne-based artist has cultivated a universe of sound entirely her own, immediately recognizable yet endlessly evolving much like the work of her contemporaries and collaborators Mike Parker and Donato Dozzy. To experience Cio's music is to follow a throughline that traces the complex history of contemporary techno in a single gesture, compelled by the vast unknown and the primordial familiar in equal measure. Recalling the blurred realism of Richter's photo-paintings or the timeless intricacy of Bach's fugues, Cio's self-contained sonic world delicately reframes our own precious lifecycle, a reflection revealed through its elegant and subtractive minimalism. In collaboration with our friends at Mostra, I'm honored to share a selection from Cio D'Or's set performed at this year's edition of the Barcelona-based festival, a sublime triumph from a scholar of sound. @cio-d-or @mostrabcn Artwork by Camille Ferdinandus.

Madrid's F-on is a much beloved figure within the Spanish scene, known for his elegant all-vinyl sets and curation behind the brilliant Alpenglühen label among so much more. We stayed in touch after his particularly beautiful set at 2017's Paral·lel Festival, and I've been looking forward to one day sharing this episode of the series since. (This podcast was previously recorded and published on July 11, 2020) Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... Pam Padgett, put her car up for sale. Her neighbor was interested in buying Pam's car. The neighbor borrowed the car and took it to her mechanic to examine the car. That seemed so strange to me for she knows Pam well and should know Pam would conceal nothing from her concerning the car. Further she knew Pam took good care of the car through the years and the car was priced at a low price for the quality of the car, $6,500. A new car of the same model and equipment would cost $55,000. The people who bought my house in Texas wanted a sure thing so they hired a man to inspect the house. They seemed to need a guarantee from another human. The inspector found a few very minor things wrong at the house. (He was being paid to find things wrong, so of course he had to find things wrong to justify the amount he was being paid by the buyers.) The buyers could have fixed these things themselves but they wanted me to fix them. So I just added $7,000 to the price of the house to allow me to fix these things. I didn't know how much it would cost, so I had to guess at the cost, and I raised the price of the house to cover the cost. It ended up costing less than $3,000 to fix the items. The buyers could have saved $4,000 by just fixing these things themselves. Being wise in your own eyes can cost you money. But this is the way people of this world live. Also the people who bought my house wanted a "warranty" which cost $600. I added this to the cost of the house and these people ended up paying for that warranty themselves. Recently I had some sound materials added to a car. They tried to charge me $700 for insurance on the speakers. I told them I did not want that insurance. The way I live is this: If I can afford to replace the item. I don't buy insurance. If I cannot afford to replace the item, then I will consider insurance, such as on a house or medical supplement. I had difficulty in getting the store manager to remove the insurance from the cost of the project. But I insisted and he removed the insurance. We had exactly the same problem when we purchased the car. They wanted to add an extended warranty. We insisted that they remove this. They really fought us. But we did get it removed. The dealer must make a great deal by getting people to buy these "warranties". Pam's neighbor, Jim, bought warranty on his house but he could never get them to fix anything. When it broke, they just said, "The warranty does not cover that." I manage to have money left over after purchasing something and I keep that money in my savings and pay for the item, if something goes wrong. I find it is less expensive for me to do it that way. But I find the people of this world usually want this world to protect them. And often it ends up costing them more than it would have cost if they had just saved money to replace that item after the lifetime of the item. Also when something goes wrong, the company issuing the "insurance" sometimes files bankruptcy if there are too many claims and they don't cover the warranty anyway. It is better to trust in God than to put your trust in humans. I like to be sure God is showing me to make "that" purchase. That is my peace. But this world has no peace in God. Their peace is in their plans. It is a very hard way of life. ***** Proverbs 3 5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge HIM, and HE shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil *** Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. *** James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. *** II Peter 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of HIM in peace, without spot, and blameless. *** Does God approve the purchase you are considering? To me, this is the starting point. I ask God this question, "Should I buy this? or should I do this? Examples: * Fireplace: changing from gas to wood burning * Defective TV: what God showed me to do James 3 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. If we are trying to impress someone, we are already in trouble. My cleaning woman once came to me and said, "Don't you ever feel you have to keep up with the Joneses." I was shocked, and replied, "NO". *** Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. *** I do not buy anything unless I have the cash to pay in full for the item, and have cash left over after purchasing that item. God told me this in 1975, when I was born again: "Get out of debt ... and stay out of debt." I did that by 1976 and have never been in debt again since that time, not even for a house. I believe this is the better way to live. *** II Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. *** God showed me incredible things to do which allowed me to accumulate money whereby I could afford to pay for things I never even thought of buying. Ephesians 3:20 Now unto HIM that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, The power that "worketh" in us is the Holy Spirit who brings ideas to our minds. * Houses * Sound equipment for car * Home theater equipment *** Revelation 18:11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: *** Ephesians 1:12-14 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. *** John 14:26 Jesus says ... But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in MY name, HE shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 16:13 Howbeit when HE, the Spirit of truth, is come, HE will guide you into all truth: for HE shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever HE shall hear, that shall HE speak: and HE will shew you things to come. *** 2 Peter 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of HIM in peace, without spot, and blameless. *** Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Ephesians 3 20 Now unto HIM that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, The power of God that works in us is the Holy Spirit. As we follow the Holy Spirit, one step at a time, everything falls in line for us in ways that later amaze us. The people of this world strive and plan to get things of this world. We just follow God by HIS Spirit and things appear around us in our lives. It is amazing. One scripture at a time ...
Kerry and Collin didn't plan on 2025 being a John Cusack-a-thon, but that's what ended up happening. After talking about "Serendipity" back in February and with "The Ice Harvest" coming up in December, the hosts decided to do a Cusack double-header of Christmas-adjacent films that came out 40 years ago. "The Sure Thing" was Cusack's first starring role in the teenage take on "It Happened One Night" while "Better Off Dead" took on a much weirder tone and ended up being a cult favorite, much to Cusack's chagrin. How does our sense of humor change as we get older? Which of the two films do the hosts respond to more? What is the third film co-starring John Cusack from this same year? Tune in to find out (or just IMDb him for that third question. Or look at the show notes below?). Plus, Kerry gives three more films from "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die," one of which might tie into one of these Cusack films. Book films covered: "It Happened One Night" (1936) "Ran" (1985) "The Sting" (1973)

Send us some LOVE!Sarah Mayfield brings a uniquely powerful perspective to the conversation about children's grief – she's both a former elementary school counselor and a bereaved mother who watched her four-year-old son navigate the sudden loss of his younger brother. When Sarah's 18-month-old son Elliot died unexpectedly in his sleep, she faced not only her own devastating grief but also the challenge of helping her living son Bradley understand and process what had happened. Despite her professional background, nothing had prepared her for guiding a child through sibling loss while managing her own raw emotions. What makes this episode particularly valuable is Sarah's candid sharing about the realities of childhood grief. She challenges the well-meaning but dismissive comments like "he's too young to remember" or "kids are resilient" that often minimize children's grief experiences. Instead, she offers practical insights about using direct language, answering repeated questions with patience, and creating meaningful rituals that honor the person who died.Sarah's experience led her to write "The Sure Thing," a beautiful children's book that illustrates how a child can continue to "live that love" for a sibling who has died. Beyond the touching story itself, the book provides valuable resources for grieving families, including 30 suggested activities for honoring lost loved ones and templates for children to express their feelings.Perhaps the most comforting message Sarah shares is that while the trauma of loss may diminish with time, the love never does. For this episode we welcome the extraordinary talents of Aaron J, Brooklyn's Sure Thing record label and podcast founder, known for hosting an immense list of explorative modern techno artists from around the globe. Altering our consciousness for the first time in 2023 with a particularly awe inspiring set at Sustain-Release, Aaron's deeply considered and intricate approach is something of sheer beauty, and coupled with masterful technical ability, his inspiring DJ sets allow for fully immersive dancefloor experiences. Here Aaron explores the softer edges of his expansive sound palette, meditative soundscapes and tranquil IDM converging in total harmony for what he describes as a 'recalibration of the senses'. @arn_j @sure_thing Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in? A. Of all the mixes I've put together over the years, this one definitely feels the most vulnerable. The months I spent thinking about and working on this mix accompanied an intensely busy time in my life, and the process helped me stay in touch with the simple joy of listening as a way of stepping back and letting things go. There is a direct connection here between the music within and the emotions that live inside me. At the same time, I've tried my best to mix this as transparently as possible, so that the act of DJing takes a back seat and allows the music to take center stage. The inspiration behind the tracks I chose and the story of the mix is one of finding balance, so I hope listening to it feels like a casting off of the present day and a recalibration of the senses. I'd love for people to listen to the mix in a setting where they feel most protected from the changes and stressors of the outside world, whether that be sitting outside in nature or laying on a couch surrounded by the comforts of home. Q. Are there any songs in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much? A. There is a track in the mix by Autumn of Communion called “Goodbye PK” dedicated to the late Peter Kuhlmann, who many of your listeners will know as the legendary Pete Namlook of FAX +49-69/450464. It's an immensely moving track that manages to convey both the tragedy of his loss and the depth of the beauty he left with the world, and I feel we're so fortunate to have music and influences like this in our recent history. I included it early to set the tone of the rest of the mix, which is quite different than any I've done before, and to pay my respects to those who've inspired our scene from the very beginning. Q. I was lucky enough to witness your set at Sustain-Release in 2023 and was in awe of your ability to practice restraint while steadily building up tension and energy in the set with such clinical and seamless execution. Is this part of the DJ craft something you spend a lot of time planning and refining? A. That was such a life-changing moment for me, so I'm really glad you were there! You really nailed what I hoped to accomplish with that set, and I definitely spend a lot of time thinking about where my sets will begin, where I would like them to end up, and what sort of path I might take to get there. Understanding the minutiae of how a transition will affect someone's state of mind and how to propel someone forward without jarring them back to reality is something I'm always working to improve on. That said, the upward trajectory is not always the most interesting one, and there are so many other ways of charting a course through a set that I hope to be able to explore. For the mix I've made for you, it's not so much a set that builds energy as it is one that expands and contracts, hopefully in a gentle and purposeful way.

First up, we dive into the exciting news that Netflix has officially greenlit a new Little House on the Prairie series. But before you panic—relax! It's not a reboot. Dean, Alison, and Pamela break down what this means, why it's great news, and what we may expect.Then...We revisit a Season 1 classic: Mr. Edwards' Homecoming! These are the early days on the Prairie, and this episode is a standout in establishing the heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) relationships between our beloved characters. This marks the first appearance of Mr. Edwards, and Victor French delivers a masterclass in acting—showcasing every layer of this complex, rugged-yet-tender character.Ever wonder how quickly Little House went from a pilot to a full series? Spoiler: it happened in record time! Plus, we break down Chesty Charles' peak “Pa” energy in his interactions with Mr. Edwards—proving that strength and vulnerability can go hand in hand. And, of course, we tackle the big questions:Why is Bonnie Bartlett's Widow Grace giving major “town Karen” vibes? Is this the very first instance of bedroom popcorn in the series? And how does The Sure Thing with John Cusack complete Dean's full-circle Prairie moment?Join us for all this and more as we celebrate another unforgettable trip back to Walnut Grove! Then join us on Patreon, where we'll see Pamela's new puppy, and discuss the working relationship between Bonnie Bartlett and Victor French.Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Feeling stressed or overwhelmed? In this powerful sermon, Pastor Eric Thomas uses lyrics from Miguel's hit song "Sure Thing"—"Bet that, never gotta sweat that"—to remind us that when you bet on God, you never have to worry about the outcome. No matter what chaos or challenges you face, God's promises are always a sure thing. If you're tired of carrying the weight on your own, this message will show you how to let go of stress and fully trust that God has everything under control. He won't fail you—ever. Key Points: God is a Sure Thing: Why you can always count on Him, no matter the situation. How to release stress and trust in God's perfect plan. Strategic warfare: while the enemy may have a plan, God's plan is always greater. Stop worrying—when you bet on God, you never have to sweat it! Scripture Reference: Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
