When I checked in with myself and listened to our community and the pulse of the world right now, what felt right this week was not to publish a new podcast episode, but to point your attention to one of our favorites from the past that features a black woman whose work is devoted to black liberation. In the summer of 2018 I savored every word of Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds by Adrienne Maree Brown. (She's since published Pleasure Activism, which became a NY Times bestseller and is also incredibly powerful.) Adrienne dances the intersection between spirituality and social justice work in a way that feels really necessary right now. If you've noticed spiritual leaders (especially white ones) jumping directly to unity and oneness without first acknowledging the 400 years of oppression that needs repair, and it doesn't sit well with you, listen in. If you're feeling immobilized by the reality of the profound limitations of society and our history around race and what it means for you and your people, and you're grappling with how it could possibly be at all connected to spirituality, listen in. Adrienne's words, laughter, and ideas are medicine. In this episode that first came out January 1, 2019, but is no less relevant today, you'll hear: • How Adrienne practices time bending (and how feeling good is part of it) • How she finally answered her calling to be a Doula despite being freaked out by blood • Who she writes for (and who she does not) • How to organize your life around the “YES!” • How to join your spirituality and social justice work together • How to know when to coast and why working hard all the time isn't the way to go • And so much more! Press play and listen to her brilliance (and prepare to laugh!) Thank you for being here in this community. Over the last week it's become ever more clear to me that not all communities are places where people feel safe to be themselves and, even more so, affirmed for all of who they are. While I will never get it perfect and I will continue to be humble and ready to fumble (quoting Erika Hines), you have my commitment that you matter to me and you are welcome here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for continuing to show up. I'll continue to do the same. Show notes and links for this episode can be found at http://www.katenorthrup.com/podcast.

What are the key factors to wellness? Wellness is important for everyone, but is vitally important during pregnancy and the postpartum period, both for new moms AND dads. Let’s talk about the key factors on the path to wellness.   Adrienne Griffen is the founder and Executive Director of Postpartum Support Virginia. She started PSVA to fill a gap in services in her area. When she experienced postpartum depression and anxiety in 2002, it took almost six months to find the help she needed. Since then, she’s been providing information, outreach, and support to new mothers and the healthcare providers who serve them. For her efforts, Adrienne was selected as the Peer Specialist of the Year by the National Council for Behavioral Health in January 2016, and a Woman of Vision by Arlington County’s Commission on the Status of Women in June 2018. Adrienne graduated from the US Naval Academy and has a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Her early career included military and government service at the White House, Pentagon, and IRS. Adrienne lives in Arlington, VA, with her husband and three children.   Show Highlights:   Adrienne’s The Path to Wellness, a one-page summary to help moms; it starts with the basics and moves into self-care, social support, therapy, and medications The scaffolding approach of The Path to Wellness Self-care and its four key components: eat, sleep, exercise, and time off How Adrienne helps moms realize the necessity of self-care Tips to get good sleep (4-5 uninterrupted hours) for new moms Nutrition for new moms: eat when the baby eats, and focus on nutrient-dense, high protein snacks with lots of water Tip: stock a feeding station wherever you feed the baby To get good exercise, go for a walk outside, which can benefit both mom and baby To get “time off,” figure out what can make you better for the day, whether it’s showering, yoga, meditation, journaling, etc. For social support, get connected to other women who are going through the same thing Support will give you validation, normalization, and hope Social support can take varied forms, so find the one that works best for you In-person support groups can offer positive reinforcement Talk therapy or counseling can help moms gain control over emotions and learn coping strategies One goal is to “soften up” women who are in a brittle state so they can be more stable Medications are not a first step, but some are safe for pregnant and breastfeeding moms Why there are many misconceptions and much misinformation about medications Why mental health meds are perceived as optional, but not other meds How these valuable interventions help new moms Why we do new moms a disservice by not talking about postpartum issues How single moms can find the help and support they need The value in short-term help, especially for getting good sleep The warning signs of too much sleep, not falling asleep well, or not staying asleep Words of Hope from Adrienne: “You are not alone. You are not to blame, and with help, you WILL be well.”   Resources:   www.postpartumsupportinternational.org   Find PostpartumVA on Facebook Contact Adrienne:  adrienne.griffen@gmail.com Find the printable Path to Wellness sheet: http://www.postpartumva.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Path-to-Wellness-February-2015.pdf

This week, TWT interviews Adrienne of “Learn with Adrienne”, an SLP who specializes in early intervention. Through online videos, she has taught thousands of people how to use sign language to support a child’s language development.  She and Rachel discuss several topics, including how sign language and high-tech AAC can be used as part of a multi-modal approach!   Before the interview, Chris and Rachel talk about motivation and why it is such an important part of any intervention. Rachel shares a personal story about a difficult conversation she had with a peer, and why it is important not to be too hard on ourselves when there is a breakdown in communication. Rachel also talks about why we should “inspire not require” our students to communicate, and why placing repeated demands can be so disruptive to progress. Finally, Chris asks why we can't have an AAC course in high school or college - maybe even one that satisfies a language credit!   Next, Rachel interviews Adrienne! They discuss: 1) How Adrienne became interested in early intervention and sign language, 2) How research indicates that learning sign language doesn’t limit spoken language growth, 3) Why teaching sign language can help a child receive more positive feedback, 4) Why it can be helpful to teach students more than one communication modality - e.g., teach both sign language and high-tech AAC devices as needed, and 5) How we should receive an approximation of a sign when a child has their own way signing something!   We want to know what you think! I think a lot of you are going to relate today with my guest and entrepreneur, Adrienne Dorison. Like many, she found herself in a corporate job that was “OK" and paid the bills, but she ended up starting a business/side hustle because she needed to create space in her life for something that she loved. Initially her goal wasn’t to replace her corporate income, but when the corporation had a problem with her side hustle, she was nudged into it. At the time, Adrienne was trying to pay off $50K in student loan debt, however without a full-time job, she worried that it would take her forever to pay if off. So, rather than allow her boyfriend (now husband) to pay off her debt for her, she made an aggressive plan to pay it off herself – and give back at the same time. Adrienne wanted to balance out the negative feelings of shame that came with debt or bad credit and instead made it a feel-good experience. Today, giving is built into her business’s structure – both monetarily and by sharing her experiences. Tune in to hear more about Adrienne’s driven and giving spirit.  -- Question Highlights: Who is Adrienne Dorison? What was your transition like from corporate America to entrepreneurship? Why did your corporate job have a problem with your blog? Why do we stay in bad jobs for so long? What was one of your big “crash and burns?” What is it like to be the bread-winner of your family? What’s your advice to couples who wake up in this position? How do you make it work? How did you work giving into your business’s DNA? Where does your generosity come from?   In This Episode We Talk about:   Adrienne’s transition from corporate America to entrepreneurship How shame around debt/bad credit led her to donate How she paid of $50K in debt in 6 months (while still giving) How Adrienne made paying off her debt a feel-food experience Spousal communication and balancing feminine and masculine dynamics How Adrienne likes to take action from the place of how she wants to feel Why it’s so important to share what your business gives And so much more…   Adrienne’s Thoughts…   “I needed to create space in my life for something that I loved.”   “Giving grounds you in what you have.”   “I want to make a lot of money so I can give a lot away.”   “When you earn more, you can give more.”   -- Adrienne is the CEO of Lean Growth Group, a business operations consultancy that helps companies double their results, with half the effort. Adrienne is a certified LEAN Six Sigma consultant + SCRUM expert trainer from the world of corporate manufacturing, who has created her own proprietary systems + tools specific to small business owners. Adrienne has helped hundreds of businesses (from Fortune 500 companies to fast-growth start-ups) meaningfully expand profit margins and cut costs in 90 days or less. She understands how to simplify complex business problems and help teams restructure so they can scale to the next level.   Adrienne has been featured in a number of publications including Entrepreneur, Business Insider, and TIME, and she's personally passionate about helping entrepreneurs earn more to give more. She started her business by getting serious about her debt and paid off over $45,000 of student loan debt in just 6 months, all while giving away money at the same time. Her company has now given away over $120,000 to meaningful causes in less than 2 years, and has empowered and equipped her clients to do the same. Adrienne lives in St. Petersburg, Florida with her husband, Tyler, her Bernese Mountain Dog, Church, and their rescue Terrier, Airy.    -- Resources: http://Adriennedorison.com IG: @adriennedorison http://TheAdventureProject.org -- For more stories and tips on becoming unapologetically wealthy, follow me @Chriswharder on Instagram and check out fortheloveofmoney.com.
