//The Wire//2300Z September 12, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CHARLIE KIRK ASSASSIN ALLEGEDLY APPREHENDED, AS MORE DETAILS IN THE CASE AND ADDITIONAL SUSPECTS POSSIBLY BECOME INVOLVED. ANNAPOLIS SHOOTING DISCOVERED TO BE THE RESULT OF HOAX CALL, ONE MIDSHIPMAN WOUNDED IN FRIENDLY-FIRE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Utah: This morning federal authorities confirmed that one individual was in custody who is assessed to have been Charlie Kirk's assassin. Tyler Robinson was physically detained at his home by his father, who turned him in after recognizing him as the shooter. This afternoon, during a press conference, Utah Governor Spencer Cox conveyed additional information that was compiled by the FBI on the shooting. He stated that text messages were recovered between the alleged shooter, and his roommate. During an interview with the FBI, the alleged killer's roommate volunteered to show investigators Discord messages between himself and the shooter. These messages involved the shooter stating that he needed to recover the rifle from a drop point located in a bush, wrapped in a towel. Additional messages were noted referencing engraving bullets.Analyst Comment: Information manipulation is already well out of control regarding this individual. For example, earlier today a Twitter/X account posted a photoshopped version of a photo of the suspected killer, which depicted Robinson wearing a Trump t-shirt, with the caption "Tired of these terrorists". The same exact account owned up to their fake information, but as this account has over 5 million followers, the damage had already been done. Robinson has zero ties to any sort of conservative politician or party, all of his associations are via politically left organizations.Nevertheless this is a common tactic used by many organizations; posting two messages/photos at nearly the same time, one of which is fake and the other either an apology or a correction. The fake content gets boosted in the algorithm and amplified everywhere, but the quiet correction never makes the rounds. This is a very tired tactic to evade both being banned on social media, along with criminal prosecution. In the age of AI, there are probably tens of millions of people who are seeing these fake images (not just from this one account, but many others as well), and due to everyone being in their own ideological bubble, there are significant efforts underway to make people think the shooter was a "far-right terrorist", instead of the overwhelming evidence that suggests otherwise.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Yesterday's reported shooting at the US Naval Academy turned out to be another hoax like the other reported shootings, but the response to the hoax involved the friendly-fire shooting of one student. Authorities state that a former student at the Academy made threats of violence online, though he was able to spoof his IP address (or conduct some similar effort) to make it appear as though he was still at the Academy. A campus-wide alert was sent out regarding the threats, and initial reports circulated among students that the shooter was attempting to pose as a police officer to gain access to more victims. In reality, the individual that was spotted was a genuine police officer, one of the first to arrive on scene, working to clear the facility of threats. This resulted in a case of mistaken identity that resulted in the real shooting taking place. When the officer was attempting to gain entry to one building, a Midshipman attempted to beat the officer to death with a non-functioning parade rifle, thinking that he was the shooter. This Midshipman was shot in the arm by the officer, with the officer thinking that *he* was the shooter. After the Midshipman was shot, the situation of mistaken identity became clear, and the Midshipman was airlifted to a local area hospital, where he his expected to survive.
//The Wire//2300Z September 11, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CHARLIE KIRK ASSASSIN REMAINS AT LARGE AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. MULTIPLE HOAX SWATTING INCIDENTS REPORTED AT UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE NATION. CUBAN ILLEGAL ARRESTED AFTER BRUTAL MURDER AT DALLAS HOTEL. SHOOTING REPORTED AT US NAVAL ACADEMY IN ANNAPOLIS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Utah: The situation regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk continues to develop, with many new details coming to light overnight. At the moment, multiple individuals seem to be involved in this case in one way or another: One actual shooter, and many more persons that caused confusion during the initial reaction to the shooting. The individual identified as George Zinn was initially arrested after he verbally confessed to the crime, stating that he was the shooter. He screamed "I did it" and "shoot me" immediately as the shot was heard. This could have been a case of mental illness (as Zinn has a criminal history that reflects such and he was known to authorities for this kind of thing) or this could also have been an intentional act of diversion to allow the real shooter time to escape. Whatever the intent was, this did function as a diversionary tactic, and the shooter was able to egress from the area. Nevertheless, local reports state that Zinn was released from custody. Another unidentified individual was initially arrested at the scene as well, in possession of a pellet rifle. No further information regarding this individual's status at this time.Idaho: A fight broke out at a candlelight vigil at the Idaho Capitol (which was arranged to memorialize Charlie Kirk) when leftist activists began to interrupt proceedings. Several leftist demonstrators were removed after they attempted to gain entry to the crowd and scream obscenities during the vigil.Colorado: Yesterday afternoon a school shooting was reported at Evergreen High School near Denver. Local authorities state that Desmond Holly, a 16-year-old student at the school, shot two students before taking his own life.Texas: Yesterday afternoon a woman was beheaded at a motel in Dallas. Local authorities state that Yordanis Cobo-Martinez, an illegal migrant from Cuba, murdered his employer (Chandra Nagamallaiah) with a machete after a brief argument at the Downtown Suites Hotel. Cobo-Martinez was arrested at the scene.Maryland: This afternoon, an active shooter was reported at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. This is a developing situation at this time, but initial reports indicate that a former Midshipmen returned to the institution to conduct the attack. Early reports indicate as many as 1-3 casualties, however the scene is still locked down at this time. More details to follow as information becomes available.USA: This afternoon the recent wave of swatting calls flared up again, with several calls being made around Boston this afternoon. An active shooter situation was reported at the University of Massachusetts (UMass), which turned out to be a hoax. Several other locations around Boston were also host to swatting incidents, which also were hoaxes. This morning a bomb threat was called in to the DNC headquarters in Washington, which was also confirmed to be a hoax. Throughout the afternoon the University of Central Florida also reported a similar hoax being called in at their campus.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: When it comes to risk assessment and mitigation, making decisions based on details that are speculative is acceptable if time is of the essence, such as when a high-profile assassin is still on the loose. However, it would be wise to focus on the details that help with that assessment, rather than getting dragged down rabbit holes that eat up time that we don't have. Panicking helps no one, and though it is a challenging skill to develop when the general mood is that of extreme anger, rem

//The Wire//2300Z July 25, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: "DATING" APP DATA BREACH HIGHLIGHTS NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: This morning a major PII leak was exploited on the Tea app, the infamous app that has gained notoriety around the United States. This data leak was not a hack by any means; the selfie ID feature and driver's license images used to register users were stored unencrypted on the app's servers for anyone on the internet to see. Furthermore, the location data was not scrubbed from the images, so the exact GPS coordinate of each user was also leaked, with tens of thousands of users' private location data being leaked online.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: This app gained infamy as it's entire purpose is to serve as a "Yelp" for women to rate men, and to allow women to secretly share personal information regarding prospective dates, all without men being allowed to either face their accusers or even know that they are being gossiped about (thus the name of the app being a slang term that serves as a synonym for "gossip"). Most importantly, the app uses facial recognition to prevent biological males from obtaining an account. Beyond the unfortunate origins of the app and the equally unfortunate data leak, examination of the data that was leaked is likely to cause exceptionally grave risks to national security. The "gossipy" nature of this story doesn't matter, a bunch of unflattering selfies doesn't matter either; what does matter is that this may have inadvertently revealed significant national security concerns. For instance, preliminary analysis of the datasets indicates that many users of the Tea app downloaded the app, took a selfie, and registered for an account while at work. In some cases, at government facilities or on military bases...such as the rather unfortunate individual who decided it was a good idea to register for this app while stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Or the person who felt that they needed to use this app while on a gunnery range at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. So far, other interesting sites located via personnel taking a selfie to register for this app at work include the following locations:- An ammunition storage bunker at Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey.- The legislative offices at the Connecticut State Capitol building.- One of the headquarters buildings at Minot Air Force Base.- A maintenance site on the airfield at Eglin Air Force Base.- Alumni Hall at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.- And the off-base housing complexes at nearly every single military base in the United States.Of course, these data points only encompass the GPS coordinates that were embedded in the metadata of the selfies taken when users created an account on the app, so the data that was leaked is merely a snapshot of wherever a person was when they registered an account. Most of the GPS points presented in this data were very precise, pinpointing users within a diameter of 36ft or so on average. GPS errors are also likely to throw off this dataset, so it's probable that quite a few data points are inaccurate. However, most of the data (as leaked) is good enough for nationstate-level malign actors to have a field day when it comes to espionage. A person who is unhappy with the person they are in a relationship with, who is also willing to submit their full legal name and street address (or GPS location) makes for a prime espionage target when this data is cross-referenced with other data. It takes exactly two clicks to import the leaked data to a map, and overlay that map with known sensitive military sites around the nation...perhaps in the process finding a few new locations as well. It is also easy to cross-reference this data with property ownership documents to find out how many people took a selfie at a different ad

Fifty-five years after the terrible shooting at Kent State University, I spoke with Brian VanDeMark, a Professor of History at the US Naval Academy, about his new book, Kent State: An American Tragedy (Norton, 2024). Cutting through the reductive narratives of the shooting, VanDeMark offers a definitive history of the fatal clash between Vietnam War protestors and the National Guard, illuminating its causes, lasting consequences, and cautionary lessons for us all. On May 4, 1970, at Kent State University in Ohio, political fires that had been burning across America during the 1960s exploded. Antiwar protesters wearing bell-bottom jeans and long hair hurled taunts and rocks at another group of young Americans―National Guardsmen sporting gas masks and rifles. At half past noon, violence unfolded with chaotic speed, as guardsmen―many of whom had joined the Guard to escape the draft―opened fire on the students. Two reductive narratives ensued: one, that lethal state violence targeted Americans who spoke their minds; the other, that law enforcement gave troublemakers the comeuppance they deserved. For over fifty years, little middle ground has been found due to incomplete and sometimes contradictory evidence. Kent State meticulously re-creates the divided cultural landscape of America during the Vietnam War and heightened popular anxieties around the country. On college campuses, teach-ins, sit-down strikes, and demonstrations exposed the growing rift between the left and the right. Many students opposed the war as unnecessary and unjust and were uneasy over poor and working-class kids drafted and sent to Vietnam in their place. Some developed a hatred for the military, the police, and everything associated with authority, while others resolved to uphold law and order at any cost. Focusing on the thirteen victims of the Kent State shooting and a painstaking reconstruction of the days surrounding it, historian Brian VanDeMark draws on crucial new research and interviews―including, for the first time, the perspective of guardsmen who were there. The result is a complete reckoning with the tragedy that marked the end of the sixties. Dr. Andrew O. Pace is a historian of the US in the world who specializes in the moral fog of war. This episode covers a lot of ground. On the heels of last week's episode where we had to edit out our discussion of women in special operations, that's exactly where our conversation this week starts. We originally connected with our guest because of his LinkedIn post about a woman in her senior year at the Naval Academy who has been selected to attend BUD/S, but we quickly move on to focus on how mindfulness fits into human performance. Jon Macaskill is a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned consultant and mindfulness and meditation teacher. He was born in South Africa but grew up in Ruston, Louisiana. After graduating high school, he served briefly as an enlisted sailor in the US Navy before receiving an appointment to the US Naval Academy and graduating from there with a BS in mathematics 4 years later. He also has a Master's degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School.During his 24-year Navy career Jon served in Iraq, Afghanistan, off the coast of Somalia, and in Panama. After retiring, he served briefly as the Deputy Executive Director for the veteran nonprofit, Veteran's PATH. He now runs a podcast called Men Talking Mindfulness; does keynote speaking engagements on developing leadership, grit, and resilience; and owns his own consulting company, Frogman Mindfulness. In all three roles, his desire is to improve cultures and individuals through mindfulness, meditation, vulnerability, and compassion.Jon's wife, Beka, also served in the Navy and is now a civilian Orthopedic Physician Assistant. Together, they are the proud parents of three children, and after an adventurous 6 months as a family in an RV, they have settled on a small farm in Colorado Springs.
Newt talks with Sean Spicer, former White House Press Secretary, about his recent appointment to the board of the US Naval Academy by President Trump. Spicer shares insights into his career, including his military service and his tenure in the White House. He recounts his legal battle against the Biden administration's unprecedented dismissal of service academy board members and reflects on the media's portrayal of political narratives. Their conversation also covers Spicer's current endeavors, including his podcast, “The Sean Spicer Show” and his role as co-host of “The Morning Meeting” on 2way.tv Additionally, Spicer praises the current White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, for her poise and leadership, and discusses the challenges and strategies in managing the White House press corps.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join 25,000+ who receive these insights in my free newsletter: https://davidburkus.com/podcastAre generational clashes at work really as big of a deal as people make them out to be? We've all heard the stereotypes—Millennials got participation trophies, Gen Z is lazy, Boomers are out of touch. And let's be honest, Gen X…well, people just forget to mention Gen X. But what if I told you these so-called generational differences aren't actually the problem? The real issue isn't when someone was born—it's where they are in life. Millennials are balancing careers and family, Boomers are thinking about legacy, and Gen Z is just starting out, trying to figure out where they fit. And yet, we talk about these differences like they're unbridgeable gaps when, in reality, they're just different life stages. The truth is, the more we emphasize generational labels, the more we create unnecessary tension. It's not age that divides teams—it's the assumptions we make about each other. And as leaders, we have to stop managing based on stereotypes and start focusing on strengths.00:00 Intro00:49 Forget generations. That is how Trump supporters would be feeling if Harris had won. Each side feared tyranny if the other side won, and neither can imagine how the other side could feel that. The work now is to reduce the chasm between these lived world views and for both sides to be vigilant and protect the rights we cherish.”Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeBook: To Stop a Tyrant by ChaleffBook: Intelligent Disobedience by ChaleffBook: The Courageous Follower by ChaleffAbout The International Leadership Association (ILA)The ILA was created in 1999 to bring together professionals interested in studying, practicing, and teaching leadership. Ever hear of the Army Navy football game? The Navy side of that is from the US Naval Academy, and my alma mater. Join me in today's "other Salisbury adventure" episode where I interview Deputy Commandant from the US Naval Academy CAPT Dave Forman, my classmate and friend. He explains the many differences in technology, teachings, training, and leadership between 1998 and today, along with the duties of the "Vice Principal" of an incredible institution that commissions officers into the US military. Join me in a conversation inside the Naval Academy.
In our first season of the podcast, we interviewed author Michael Zigarelli, who wrote a book called The Messiah Method: The 7 Disciplines of the Winningest College Soccer Program in America. The book outlined the tremendous success of Messiah College soccer, where between 2000 and 2010 the mens and women's teams had won 11 national titles and been to 17 Final Fours between them. Ever since then, we have wanted to bring onto the podcast the architect of that dynasty Dave Brandt. Today we get to do that. In 24 seasons as a college head coach, including stints at Messiah, the US Naval Academy, Hope College and Bucknell, Dave Brandt has won over 360 games. In 12 years at Messiah, his teams compiled a 246-25-14 (.888) record, won six Division III national championships and made eight Final Four appearances. Brandt was a four-time National Coach of the Year honoree at Messiah, and five of his student-athletes earned National Player of the Year honors. He then moved on to the Naval Academy where he turned around a program and won the Patriot League as the first undefeated, untied conference champion in league history. After a short stint in professional soccer with the Pittsburg Riverhounds, he returned to college coaching at Hope College in MI where he again turned around a losing program and led them to an NCAA appearance and conference championship. This past Fall he led Bucknell to the Patriot League title and an NCAA tournament bid. In our chat today, Dave unpacks the core principles of all the winning programs he has built, how passion and intentionality drive his programs, the secrets to having standards not rules, the value of love in your coaching, and so much more. #194: Charlie Duke is a former Astronaut & Apollo 16 Lunar Model pilot who became the 10th and youngest human being to ever walk on the surface of the moon. He has also served in many other critical historical events. On Apollo 11, the first ever moon landing, Neil Armstrong asked Charlie to serve at CAPCOM (which is the voice of Houston/mission control when they landed on the moon). He served back up on Apollo 13 working tirelessly to help safely bring back his fellow astronauts. Charlie attended the US Naval Academy before becoming a fighter pilot in the US Air Force. After a few years in the Air Force he attended MIT and then became a test pilot with Chuck Yeager. During this time he was encouraged by Yeager and others to apply to become an astronaut and the rest is history. Apollo 16 was NASA's second scientific expedition on the moon. During his time on the moon he logged 20.25 hours in extra vehicular activities and collected some 213 pounds of soil and geological samples. He took the only videos of the lunar rover in action. Charlie's stay on the moon was a record setting 71hours and 14 minutes and he was also the first person to do Moon Olympics. On the show Charlie shares his story of growing up, becoming a fighter pilot, test pilot and then astronauts, the many of tense stories of the Apollo landings, his own experience walking on the moon, life after NASA, the impact and influence of his wife Dotty, forgiveness, fulfillment, faith, and much more. Today's podcast is an inside look at what it's like running for a US Military Academy. I have the privilege of speaking with Murphy Smith from the US Naval Academy. Murphy has run 7:57 in the 3k, 13:55 in the 5k (indoor school record), and 28:37 in the 10k which is also a school record. Back in high school, Murphy ran 2:00 in the 800m, 4:19 in the 1600m, and 9:15 in the 3200m. He was also a state-champion in the state of North Carolina. Last year, Murphy qualified for the 2023 NCAA XC Championships individually, and this year just missed qualifying. In today's conversation, Murphy takes me through what it's like to be a student-athlete at the United States Naval Academy, how he's grown as a person/athlete during his time there, what he wants his legacy to be, his outlook on his future in the sport, and much more. This one was a really fun opportunity to look into a very unique life and hear more about how Murphy excels in various areas in his life. Tap into the Murphy Smith Special. After the untimely death of Captain John Paul Jones in Paris, a funeral was provided as well as a lead-lined coffin, and the coffin was deposited in the New Orleans area of Paris, a graveyard for non-citizen Protestants. This occurred during the height of the French Revolution, and the papers marking the place of burial were burned, making it difficult years later to locate. In addition, the cemetary became vacant, was filled in with 15 feet of dirt, and used for the building of cheap tenements served by septic tanks as well as a burail yard for dead animals including horses. It was definitely no way to treat a hero- but no one cared at the time and through the 100 years that the body beneath the heap. In 1898 the new Ambassador to France, Horace C. Porter, honored his earlier pledge to recover Jone'sbody and return it with honor to the United States, which had made their naval hero an honorary citizen. It took 6 years to find John Paul Jones- and this is the story of that search and what it means to the US Naval Academy to house the remains of the Father of the American Navy.
