Not unusually for this podcast, we look back – with quite some affection – to the 1970s. Many of our listeners will also no doubt remember the decade through a haze of nostalgic introspection… but of course it was also a tumultuous ten years that not only laid many of the foundation stones for the modern game, but also witnessed the English national team twice failing to qualify for the World Cup Finals after their heroics in the competition in 1970. Bringing a younger, but no less well-informed perspective, Jon Holmes and Colin Shindler are joined by Jon Spurling – whose book Get It On: How The 70s Rocked Football focuses on the decade that has been described as the one when football went from black & white to colour. This week, our Discourse Digest kicks off the show with a look back on a hugely successful Rugby World Cup, and a look forward to the weekend's final between England and Canada. Ross picks England by ten, Gareth thinks Canada pull off a heist in the home of English Rugby. Who is your pick?We also discuss an article by Sean Ingle, that revealed that between 50 and 60 athletes with DSDs had been identified by World Athletics since 2000. Ross explains how these athletes were identified, what they were required to do in order to compete, and why their number supports the introduction of screening of all athletes who enter women's sport. In Center Stage (29:08) we look back at Tokyo's World Championships one last time. We nominate our best athletes, best performances, biggest surprises, best events, most impressive comebacks, and 'winners and losers' from a championships that we both scored very highly for entertainment and intrigue.Ross Replies (1:00:26) remains focused on Tokyo, and a question from Neil about the rarity of 400m-800m doubles in elite athletics, and how the 800/1500m combination seems to have been replaced by a 1500m/5000m pairing. Ross discusses the physiological differences, with some fascinating insights on pacing strategies in 800m world records, a limit to how fast the second lap can be run, and how shoes and changes to qualification criteria may have tilted the balance in favour of the 1500m athletes against the track distance specialists. And Finally (1:12:09), celebrities who run marathons end our show, with a recent impressive Berlin sub-3:00 performance the catalyst. We wonder who the most recognized name is in the world who has run a sub-3 marathon? We are now also on YouTube! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Send us a textCourtney Coppinger takes us inside her journey to the Mountain Running World Championships in this candid conversation about mental resilience, team camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence on the international stage. From Colorado's high altitude training grounds to the pristine trails of Europe, Courtney shares the rollercoaster of emotions that define an elite athlete's preparation. "Nothing felt really shiny and nothing felt really good," she admits about her final training block, before describing how arriving in Europe instantly restored her confidence: "The stoke immediately came back because sea level, 60-degree temps, perfect trails... I had a run yesterday and it just all came back and I'm like, yep, you're fit, you're ready."Her recent performances validate that preparation. At the World Cup Finals in Slovenia, Courtney made a pivotal mental shift, deciding to race aggressively from the start rather than working from behind. The result? A breakthrough third-place finish that transformed her self-belief. Similarly, at the A-Basin Cirque Series race, she pushed through early suffering to claim second place, reinforcing valuable lessons about race strategy and recovery. What truly shines through is Courtney's deep appreciation for team culture. She speaks passionately about the pre-World Championships camp organized by teammate Cam Smith, where Team USA members formed meaningful bonds. "There were no egos, everybody was just super excited to get to know each other," she reflects. This team-first mentality extends to her Brooks teammates, who have become her closest friends in the sport. "I literally was tearing up because I didn't know that I was going to sign with you guys and find two of my best friends," she shares, emphasizing that these relationships transcend running achievements.Looking ahead to the World Championships, Courtney's confidence in Team USA is unwavering. "This team, it's just these girls on this team... I couldn't pick a better group of four sub-ultra classic style racers," she declares, believing they have excellent medal potential. With a month in Europe planned after the championships, Courtney's passion for the sport, her teammates, and the adventure of it all promises to carry her through the biggest race of her season.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Brian Kerr's voice is instantly familiar as a broadcaster, and his contribution to Irish football is extraordinary. Born in 1953, his first coaching role came while barely a teenager. In the 1980s he would come to manage the team he had supported since his childhood, St Patrick's Athletic, before going on to historic victories with Ireland's youth teams in the 1990s. In this discussion, we touch on everything from the 1966 World Cup Final to the visit of the Al-Helal Football Academy in Gaza to Dublin. A little language in this one. With thanks to Naoise Nunn and all at Mindfield/Electric Picnic. For more on Kerr's story, see Joe O'Rourke's ‘The People's Champions' exploring his 1989/1990 league winning side.
