This week on Yes But Why, we talk to Nick Byrne, one of Australia's most prominent improvisational trainers and producers. Nick Byrne is Artistic Director of the Impro ACT theatre in Canberra, Australia. Starting in 2005, Impro ACT has been providing improv classes at all levels, performances of comedic, dramatic, musical, physical, and experimental unscripted theatre, as well as the Canberra International Festival of Improvisation (aka “Improvention”). Nick is also the Artistic Director of “Improvention,” Australia's international festival of Improvisation. Since 2009, “Improvention” has hosted hundreds of improvisers from every continent to participate in half-day workshops and perform every night in shows, over the course of eight days. In Nick's career in entertainment, he has played the role of trainer, director, producer, actor, musician, and comic. He has worked in political satire, musical theatre, corporate comedy, theatre in education, theatre restaurant, street theatre, film, advertising, and radio comedy. Focusing for the last fifteen years on improvisation, Nick has taught hundreds of hours of workshops on spontaneous thinking, problem-solving, improvised theatre, team-building, and adaptability to change. In the most recent before times, Nick had been found touring the globe. He has worked in 35 international cities as a director/performer/teacher of improv at festivals and with theatre companies; including Vienna's ‘Moment' Festival, St Petersburg's Russian International Improvisation Festival, Singapore Improv Festival, and Mt Olymprov Festival in Athens. In our conversation, Nick and I chatted about the global improv community and how our current connectedness is helping to shape innovation in improv across the world. We talk about the improv festival circuit. Nick gives us a glimpse of the world of a traveling improviser! We talk about mixer shows, marketing, and audience connection. Nick tells me about how his improv festival came to be. Nick's focus on education and providing a good experience for his attendees is the cornerstone of “Improvention.” It was really fascinating to hear his perspective on this because building an improv festival seems like such a herculean task. And it was great to connect to another corner of the improv universe. Support Nick Byrne! He is continuing to operate Impro ACT, in Canberra, produce “Improvention,” and participate in various other theatrical arts activities around the city. Canberra, he says, is almost back to normal so Aussie listeners, swing on by! And other international listeners, check out impro.com.au to look for online workshops you can try!! This week’s episode of Yes But Why Podcast is an interview with Argentinian improviser Matias Avaca. Listen in as we discuss the journey that led him to running the Mabel Impro Teatro team in New Zealand. Amy and Matias were connected through previous Yes But Why guest, Christiane Brew, who met him at Improvention in Australia a few months back. There and at many other festivals, Matias has shared his “Living the Impro Loca” format which challenges international improvisers to speak only in their native tongue, even if their scene partner is not fluent. It is a beautiful melting pot of language and comedy and Matias loves to share it. Matias talks to Amy about being in the midst of a yearlong tour of the world teaching improv workshops and attending improv festivals. He shares his experiences on the road as well as stories of the gurus who taught him improv games at home. This is a great interview to listen to if you are interested in traveling as a performer!Yes But Why Podcast is a proud member of the HC Universal Network family of podcasts. It's Tuesday and... Joe Bill is our guest! Joe Bill is widely regarded as one of the best teachers of Scenic and Comedic Improvisation in America today. He currently teaches, performs and is the Director of Corporate Training at iO Chicago. He is also on the faculty at The Second City Training Center where he teaches intensives in Duo Improvisation and Improvisation for Actors. He is one of the founding members of Annoyance Theater Chicago where, for 12 years, he performed in and/or directed more than 60 different shows. Joe tours internationally featuring innovative formats in Long Form Improvisation including BASSPROV with Mark Sutton, (Annoyance Theater Co-Founding Member and Artistic Director for Training and Development at The Second City). They have been heralded by the NY TIMES: “BASSPROV refreshingly has the feel of a quiet character study…jokes emerge organically, using wordplay, character quirks and quicksilver wit.” In the last year Joe toured Eastern Europe, teaching and headlining with Jill Bernard (Huge Improv Theater – Mpls.) in their hit Duo show SCRAM! He headlined with Chicago Improv Goddess Susan Messing in Messing With a Friend at the Miami Improv Festival, with Lee White (CRUMBS – Winnipeg) in their show PARADIGM in the U.K., Germany, Switzerland and Italy, with International Improv Legend Patti Stiles (AD – Impro Melbourne) in Paris and Rome with their show Our Play, with Israeli Powerhouse Inbal Lori in Brest, France with their show That Date and with David Razowsky (Host A.D.D. Comedy Podcast) in Razowsky & Bill at Wurzburg (Germany) Improtheaterfestival and at Improvention in Canberra, Australia. Joe performs in The Del Tones, The Armando Diaz Theatrical Experience and Musical Armando at iO Chicago. He has played as a guest in The Scene and Chica GO-GO at The PIT in New York City, with Let's Have A Ball and ASSSSCAT 3000 at UCB Theater in New York & L.A and with Kornfeld & Andrews at Magnet Theater in New York City. He has performed, directed, taught and served as an Artistic Adviser for a number of Improvisation/Comedy Theaters & Festivals all over North America, Europe, Australia and South Africa and at every major Improv Festival in The United States.
Executive Producer Becca Posterino talks comedy with some seasoned professionals. Tim Ferguson, comedy legend and former member of Aussie musical comedy group the Doug Anthony Allstars, has honed his craft for many decades and now teaches comedy in various workshops around Australia. Becca also speaks with Artistic Director of Impro ACT Nick Burns about the importance of remaining in the moment as an improvisation artist. Improvention 2016 showcases local and international talent including an improvised movie that features at the festival.
Recorded at Improvention in beautiful Canberra, Australia. Our guest today is the wonderful “Queen of Improvisation,” Patti Stiles. Patti is an actor, improviser, director, and just one of the most inspiring people you’ve ever met. She’s worked with the world renowned “Loose Moose Theatre,” and was trained by and worked closely with Keith Johnstone, author of the seminal improv book “Impro.” Patti is the Artistic Director of Die Nasty AU, co-Director of Secret Impro Theatre, and Impro Melbourne. She’s traveled all over the world, and is as sought-after as any improv inspiration could be. I’d never before met Patti, but, boy, did we share a lot of improv philosophies. Stick around for Patti’s “Not My Finest Hour” segment. It’s crushingly good. Enjoy.
Recorded in Melbourne, Australia, today’s guest on ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky is Australian improv veteran Jason Geary. Jason is a teacher, a film and television actor, and the former Artistic Director Of Impro Melbourne. I’ve worked with Jason at Improvention, the awesome week-long celebration of “Impro Down-Under,” that annually occurs in Canberra, Australia. (The reason I’m in Australia and soon to be in New Zealand!) Jason’s smart, funny, confident, and one of the best people to sit down with and have a pod chat. And, stay tuned, of course, for his installment of “Not My Finest Hour” at the end of our episode. This is a good one.
