When you hear the word, feedback, what comes up for you? Most of us do not have a neutral relationship with feedback. It's tangled up with our past experiences, workplace power dynamics, cultural expectations, and–importantly–our early relational wounds. But at its core, feedback is a deeply relational act that has the power to help us unburden rather than re-wound.Which is why it's so frustrating that feedback in leadership and workplace culture is so often done without care, rendering the process performative, detached, and isolating. Some of the constraints that can hamper authentic feedback in the workplace are necessary and protective, but it feels like we've lost the plot for the role and purpose of feedback, and in some cases, have abandoned it altogether. But it is possible to navigate these complex systems intentionally and with clarity. We can make feedback a tool for accountability, care, and growth that helps leaders strengthen their self-awareness and be better advocates for their teams. My guest today helps us unpack how leaders can cultivate a feedback culture that allows for mistakes, growth, and realignment.Therese Huston, Ph.D., is a Cognitive Neuroscientist and Faculty Development Consultant at Seattle University. As estrogen drops, our midlife brains go through a lot of changes. The activity in our dopamine network declines, which can leave us going from highly motivated to “meh.” We can experience bigger cortisol spikes and have elevated levels of the stress hormone longer. We can end up feeling constantly stressed out and in a doom spiral we can't quite escape. And it doesn't exactly help that many of us are also firmly entrenched in the most demanding period of our lives. This week's guest, cognitive neuroscientist Therese Huston, PhD, is coming to the rescue with a host of simple–and quick–ways to boost our dopamine, keep cortisol in check, and help our midlife brains be their best.Therese Huston, PhD, is a cognitive neuroscientist at Seattle University and the author of four books. She's always asking, “How can we remove the pesky obstacles that get in the way of smart people?” Her latest book, Sharp: 14 Simple Ways to Improve Your Life with Brain Science, offers science-backed actionable strategies, many of which take 5 minutes or less, to help you make the most of the brain you've got. Therese received her MS and PhD in cognitive psychology from Carnegie Mellon University. She completed a prestigious post-doc in cognitive neuroscience at the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition and earned a degree in Organizational Leadership at Oxford University. She frequently gives talks and runs workshops for organizations like Microsoft, Amazon, Morgan Stanley, Strava, and the Cleveland Clinic. She also loves a good 5K, especially when the rain takes a pause in her hometown of Seattle. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn't as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there's a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life. His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.John's technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. Constantly battling that harsh inner voice that tells you you're not enough, that you'll never measure up? It can feel like this voice is always lurking, trying to undermine your confidence and making it so much harder to move forward. The good news is that you can change your internal narrative. For this episode, Jill welcomes Shawn Costello Woolley and Holly Yates, coauthors of The Inner Critic Workbook, a fantastic resource that helps you transform your inner critic into a supportive, empowering voice. You'll understand how shame fuels negative self-talk, but more importantly, how self-compassion, mindfulness, and connecting with shared humanity can help you to quiet your critic and start building a kinder, more confident inner dialogue. Listen and Learn: How your inner critic often sabotages your path toward what matters to you most Why your inner critic exists, how it hijacks your progress, and the ways it holds you back in life Is your inner critic pushing you to avoid discomfort, keeping you from the meaningful things you crave? Why self-compassion isn't about letting yourself off the hook Why attempting to replace your inner critic with positivity frequently fails, and what works instead When your inner critic speaks, does it close doors or point you in the direction of values you care about? In this episode of the Stellar Rae podcast, Dr. Laura Gallagher discusses the importance of self-acceptance and its relationship with self-growth. Drawing from her experiences at NASA and her journey in organizational psychology, she emphasizes that self-acceptance is not the opposite of self-improvement but rather a crucial component that enhances personal development. The conversation explores the psychological safety in workplaces, the journey of self-discovery, and the paradox of self-acceptance and self-improvement, particularly for high achievers. In this conversation, Dr. Laura Gallaher and Stella Rae explore the complexities of stress, self-acceptance, and personal growth. Dr. Gallaher emphasizes that stress is a subjective experience influenced by the meanings we assign to situations. She discusses the importance of self-acceptance and offers practical strategies for overcoming self-judgment, including the practice of 'taking credit' for personal achievements. The dialogue also delves into the relationship between the inner critic and the inner champion, advocating for a compassionate approach to self-talk. Dr. Gallaher shares daily habits that foster self-acceptance, including forgiveness and self-reflection, ultimately encouraging listeners to cultivate resilience and emotional well-being.Connect with Dr Gallaher on LinkedIn! https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-gallaher-phd/ Take the self acceptance quiz: https://www.gallaheredge.com/sa-quiz-lpChapters00:00 Introduction to Self-Acceptance02:00 The NASA Experience and Psychological Safety04:56 The Journey to Self-Acceptance09:53 Defining Self-Acceptance vs. Self-Esteem15:04 The Paradox of Self-Acceptance and Self-Improvement20:02 The Importance of Self-Acceptance in High Achievers23:47 Understanding Stress: A Personal Perspective28:01 The Journey to Self-Acceptance32:47 Practical Steps to Self-Improvement39:01 Navigating the Inner Critic and Champion44:05 Daily Habits for Self-AcceptanceEnjoy & dont forget to tweet/ig story me a screenshot of you listening!MY NEW WEBSITE!! It sounds weird but there is strong evidence that wearing certain clothes can change your thoughts and behavior. Here's one example: wearing a white lab coat like a doctor wears can boost your score on a test. But it gets even more interesting. Listen as I explain. https://www.fibre2fashion.com/industry-article/9410/enclothed-cognition-we-are-what-we-wear What if you could have a great day every day? That's the goal of Therese Huston, PhD, a cognitive scientist at Seattle University. Therese has some proven techniques to help you take charge of your day – particularly on those days when things don't seem to be going your way. She joins me to explain exactly how to implement them. Therese is author of the book Sharp: 14 Simple Ways to Improve Your Life with Brain Science (https://amzn.to/4jgEOSe). Dog behavior can be difficult to decipher. Why do some dogs bark incessantly? Why do others jump on people when they come to your home? How can you get your dog to do what you want them to do? And how can you figure out what your dog wants from you? Here to help decode all this is Annie Grossman. She is a journalist-turned-animal trainer who has written about dogs for the New York Times and the Boston Globe, and other publications. Stop letting negative thoughts and words hold you back—this episode explores five things to stop saying and thinking to create a more positive, fulfilling life. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the power of our words and thoughts. What we tell ourselves shapes our reality, and sometimes, we don't even realize how much negativity we let in. I recently made a commitment to be more intentional about the things I say and think—and let me tell you, it's not always easy! But the shifts I've noticed already are incredible. If you want to create a better future for yourself, join me as we talk about five things to stop saying and thinking so you can start seeing real change. Action Plan: 1 - Stop complaining about things you can't control. Complaining drains your energy and keeps you stuck. Instead, focus on gratitude and actionable solutions. 2 - Stop gossiping about others. Gossip creates negativity and doesn't serve you. Shift conversations to positive or productive topics. 3 - Stop making excuses. Excuses hold you back from growth. Take responsibility and reframe challenges into opportunities. 4 - Stop overthinking and worrying about the future. Stay present and take action instead of getting lost in “what-ifs." 5 - Stop believing you're not good enough. Replace self-doubt with affirmations and recognize your worth—because you are enough. And he knew how to do it: entering into silence. That's what makes him great. As faithful followers, you know we love journaling - all kinds of journaling. Journaling is an opportunity to pour out your heart and soul without worrying about Sr. Mary Punctuation grading your spelling or sentence structure. Journaling is also meant to be a time for self-reflection and creativity. You can journal about anything, anyone, or what you're grateful for. There really is no wrong or right way to journal. Recently, we learned of a new type of journaling called expressive writing. By definition, it is a therapeutic tool to help identify the emotions we experience as a result of a traumatic event or experience. The good news is you don't need to see a therapist or obtain a prescription for this treatment. Time, consistency, and insight are all that are needed to be successful. As you've heard us say time and time again, thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through our fingers. Join us for this episode and learn how expressive writing is yet another resource to help untangle our emotions.Show notes:How Expressive Writing Workshttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psychiatry-a-history/202011/how-expressive-writing-worksExpressive Writing Can Help Your Mental Healthhttps://www.apa.org/news/podcasts/speaking-of-psychology/expressive-writingExpressive Writinghttps://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/write-yourself-well/201208/expressive-writing

“Having a streamlined, functional, spacious home literally improves your life on every level.” –Shira GillIs decluttering your home on your list? So often I'm talking with women about big business goals and the thing that keeps coming up is their full closet, the cluttered living room, or all the boxes in the basement.I asked organizing expert Shira Gill about why we get stuck on this idea — and what we can do about it. She said: “A disorganized space signals to our brain that our work is never done. Having a streamlined, functional, spacious home literally improves your life on every level.”Decluttering your home can help you lose weight, get your finances in order, improve a relationship, or start a business. Even with that motivation it's not easy, but Shira has amazing tips for our biggest stumbling blocks. We talk about: The big reasons we have a hard time letting go: How our identity gets tangled with our stuff and the scarcity mindset of “what if I need this someday?”Asking yourself what life you want to lead now or in the future — and whether the stuff is part of that life (or part of your life for this season) How to get rid of hard to rehome things and setting boundaries around getting things out of your houseClearing a microspace (less than a room) at one timeGetting into a decluttering flow and creating common ground around what “decluttered” means for shared spaceDecluttering our digital spacesABOUT SHIRAShira Gill is a world-renowned organizing expert and the bestselling author of three books: Minimalista, Organized Living, and LifeStyled. Change comes from action. Doable changes are things that you can add into your life, one at a time to make micro shifts and really create a ripple effect that will create a big change over time. Choose one that really piques your interest and roll with it. Here are three Doable Changes from this conversation:PICK A MICROSPACE TO DECLUTTER. Instead of biting off too much — your whole house, or even a whole room — pick something more specific, like the coats in the entry way. This is a lot more manageable and you can get some wins.CREATE A BOUNDARY. Sometimes we get so caught up in selling something or getting rid of it the right way or we choose what to get rid of but then it sits in a bag....

As 2024 draws to a close, many people are rethinking their health approach, whether due to things not working as they once did or recent events prompting a shift in perspective. In today's episode, I'm joined by my good friend Meredith Kelly Oke, founder of the Quantum Biology Collective. Meredith shares insights into the world of quantum and circadian biology, the very field where I began my training in 2021. This conversation explores how our understanding of health is evolving, the cracks in the current healthcare system, and how quantum biology offers a new lens for both practitioners and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of health. If you're curious about this revolutionary approach to health or want to explore becoming a certified quantum health professional, check out the link to the Quantum Biology Collective in the show notes.
