In this year-end episode of The Physician's Guide to Doctoring, I revisit top episodes that resonated with listeners as well as MYSELF. The episode highlights conversations on nonverbal communication in healthcare with Blake Eastman, the impact of tiny habits in patient care with Dr. BJ Fogg, sensitive approaches to discussing weight with Dr. Stephanie Sogg, and the use of humor in patient interactions with Scott Dikkers. I conclude with a note on upcoming content and schedule changes, emphasizing the show's commitment to enhancing physician-patient communication and personal growth. More on each episode: Nonverbal Communication from Behind the Mask with Blake Eastman Published Jun 17, 2020 Blake Eastman is a guest like no other we've had. He is a professional poker player and founded School of Cards, the first brick and mortar poker school in the country and is the creator of Beyond Tells, a poker tells training site. He has a graduate degree in psychology and taught psychology at the City University of New York for six years. While he was doing all of that, he also provided consulting services to physicians, practices, and hospitals regarding nonverbal communication and conducted large scale independent research on nonverbal communication. The current pandemic has hamstrung our ability to read nonverbal communication and convey it. We are either behind a mask or a blurry image on a telehealth visit. He teaches us what to prioritize with regards to our own nonverbal cues, how to optimize a telehealth visit, the importance of the cadence and volume of our speech, and cues for recognizing understanding. https://www.schoolofcards.com/ https://www.beyondtells.com/ @blakeeastman Size Matters Not: Tiny Habits for Big Changes with BJ Fogg, PhD Published Aug 12, 2020 This interview is one of my most important. If you are doing to share any of my episodes, this is one that I would implore you to share with your friends, family and colleagues. This is part 1 of 2 of my interviews with BJ Fogg, PhD, author of the book Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything. We all struggle to change our behaviors, to develop good habits and stop bad habits. There is a lot of popular wisdom about this and most, if not all, is just wrong. This is where Dr. Fogg steps in. Dr. Fogg discovered the keys to changing behavior through changing habits. For those of you on medical school faculty, this should be a class. This should actually be taught in high school. Until then, as physicians, this information is critical, not just for lifestyle changes that can help patients eat better, move more, and smoke less, but even applies to checking their blood pressure and taking their medication. Popular wisdom is wrong. Guilt and shame are destructive. People don't start habits by feeling badly, they start habits by feeling successful. And we are more likely to be successful by starting a habit that is small, that we actually want to do, and the third key to this is a prompt that reminds you it is time to perform the behavior. If you are going to learn piano, you start with chopsticks. If you are going to start to exercise, you do one sit-up. The smallest increment that you can fall back on when you motivation is waning so you don't fall off the wagon completely and you keep your habit. And you do it at a point in your day that you can associate with the new behavior, even if they are completely unrelated. You'll have a reminder that is baked into your day. Dr. Fogg founded the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University. In addition to his research, Dr. Fogg teaches industry innovators how human behavior really works. He created the Tiny Habits Academy to help people around the world and interestingly, the Tiny Habits Academy long preceded the Tiny Habits book. He lives in Northern California and Maui. He can be found at BJFOGG.com and tinyhabits.com When and How to Discuss a Patient's Weight with Stephanie Sogg, PhD Published Jan 28, 2022 Back for her second appearance is Dr. Stephanie Sogg, a clinical psychologist who has been at the MGH Weight Center since 2003. One our previous episode, we discussed the importance of language when discussing someone's weight, so on this episode, we talk about when and how to bring it up. We talk about how body acceptance is actually important to sustained weight loss, although on the surface it may seem like a contradiction. We talk about the influence of sleep, mental health, and when it is time to make recommendations, what actually works. As with most things, it is complicated. Dr. Sogg earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Rutgers University in 1998 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship with Harvard Medical School. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Sogg conducts research on obesity and bariatric surgery, and the intersection between obesity and addiction, and has published widely on obesity and related topics. She is an author of the Boston Interview for Bariatric Surgery, and of the official ASMBS Recommendations for the Pre-Surgical Psychosocial Evaluation of Bariatric Surgery Patients. She is the director of the Weight Center rotation for Behavioral Medicine psychology interns and is active in national and international scientific obesity and weight loss surgery societies. Learn to Make Your Patients Laugh with Scott Dikkers of The Onion Published Oct 19, 2021 Last month marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Two weeks after that tragic day, The Onion, the famed comedy newspaper, put out an issue with jokes about 9/11. How did they do that? Scott Dikkers, one of The Onion's founders teaches us how. His rule is that comedy is meant to “afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.” That's why they put out that issue. To comfort the afflicted. As physicians, that's what we do! How can we be funny, even in the face of tragedy? Mr. Dikkers teaches comedy writing and has turned what seems unteachable into a science. He has described funny filters and all comedy fits into one of those filters. He teaches us which are the best for the exam room, how to recover from a failed joke, how to work humor into our office visits and lectures, and what jokes comedians can't use, but we can! Scott Dikkers founded the world's first humor website, TheOnion.com, in 1996. A few years earlier he helped found the original Onion newspaper. He's served as The Onion's owner and editor-in-chief, on and off, for much of the last quarter century. He led The Onion's rise from small, unknown college humor publication to internationally respected comedy brand. He is also a New York Times best seller, and Peabody Award winner. He documented his process for creating humor in his book, How to Write Funny, and the second in the series, How to Write Funnier, and next on the way, How to Write Funniest, which are the basis of the Writing with The Onion program he created and teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Scott offers other courses and free resources for comedy writers on the How to Write Funny website. Did ya know… You can also be a guest on our show? I interviewed Mary Hynes on her birthday in April. She is a professional improviser, educator and stage manager. Her performance and teaching career brings her back and forth between NYC, Chicago and LA. She is a faculty member with the storied Second City Training Center in Chicago, Toronto and LA. After graduating with her BA in Theatre from Butler University, she discovered a love for helping students young and old discover their creative voices. The power of the “yes, and” mindset in improvisation teaches presence, acceptance, courage and creativity. She is one of the pioneers of the role of virtual stage manager. During the pandemic, she was on a team of innovators with The Second City Training Center that assessed the needs, and implemented the solutions to keep theater vital and vibrant through trying times of isolation and uncertainty. She is now both highly revered and in demand as a remote operator, virtual stage manager, and facilitator for live and online events in education, entertainment and corporate workshops. She is an inspiration. Give it a listen!
This week's episode is a FUN one with Erin Keating who talks about her tips on being "Hotter Than Ever." Erin tells the story about how she blew up her life at age 50 and started to reinvent herself to become a more authentic version of myself TODAY (rather just living in the results of the goals she had for myself and my life 20 years ago). She also describes her unconventional dating "Rumspringa" the year following my separation (her year to explore and 'sow her wild oats'), and 4 things you can do to be Hotter than Ever. This week on Yes But Why, I chatted with improviser and theater techperson, Charlotte Brown. Charlotte Brown (they/them) is a Chicago-based multipotentialite that enjoys many creative endeavors such as improv, filmmaking, photography, and teching virtual improvised shows! Charlotte got their start during the pandemic doing tech for online improv shows through the Hideout Theater in Austin, Texas (you know the one). Charlotte has enjoyed virtual theater because they have gotten to learn and collaborate with people from all over the world. (Shoutout to Kenzie and Braden). One of Charlotte's favorite credits includes doing tech for The Assembly Mexico's, The Walking Sketch show, which was performed entirely in Spanish. Charlotte is not remotely fluent in Spanish but they did an excellent job with the show. Other credits include technical direction for The World's Greatest Improv School (WGIS) and sound design for the B. Iden Payne award-winning online original musical, “Human Resources the Musical.”Charlotte recently moved from Florida to Chicago to pursue their MFA in Comedic Screenwriting from DePaul University in 2021. They are currently stage managing (in real life) at CSz Chicago and The Second City Training Center. Charlotte is also the admin of the Facebook group Tech Alliance of Distributed Artists (TADA!) which is geared towards fostering collaboration and sharing best practices for both not only zoomprov but virtual theater. When we first started our conversation, Charlotte mentioned to me how they are anxious and shy and how that created some tough barriers to creativity. But I challenged that theory - Charlotte must not as shy as they used to be, as they are a loud and proud fixture in the online improv communities. In fact, Charlotte was so bubbly and full of stories during our chat that I was as delighted to be with them via Zoom as I have been chatting with them on Facebook groups for the past few years. Charlotte mused about their love for classic video games like Oregon Trail and Putt Putt Goes to the Moon. They told me about working at Universal Orlando and the beginnings of the path to improv. Charlotte talked about how they read ALL of the improv books before actually dipping a toe in the water and the ups and downs of that decision. Charlotte shared how happenstance got them into teching for online improv shows and how much they are totally in love with it now. We discussed Charlotte's recent move to Chicago and all the goals they are working on presently. Support Charlotte Brown by following them on Instagram (@charlottebreanne19). Iden Payne award-winning online original musical, “Human Resources the Musical.” Charlotte recently moved from Florida to Chicago to pursue their MFA in Comedic Screenwriting from DePaul University in 2021. In this episode, Laurie and Ann talk with Hope England, a brilliant and funny psychotherapist and comedian who founded Humor for Hope, an organization that prevents and heals trauma by using comedy and improvisation. Hope and her team formed an alternative inpatient therapy for trauma survivors and chronically and terminally ill children and patients. Hope holds a degree in writing and producing for television and sitcoms, has studied education and theater, and is a graduate and former employee of The Second City and The Second City Training Center. She is a practicing psychotherapist who works in trauma and crisis intervention with an emphasis on grief, loss, death, and dying. We discovered Hope after we delved more into The Witness Institute and talking with founder Ariel Burger (Season 3, Episode 6). In addition to her work with Humor for Hope, she is a Fellow at The Witness Institute. Here, we talk about the intersection of laughter and trauma and how her own melding of the two brought her through some very dark days this past Fall when she contracted Covid-19, which led her to develop Guillain-Barré syndrome, leaving her paralyzed from the neck down for a period. Hope shares how she discovered comedy and when she realized it could be used to heal the wounds of others. We also talk about her adventures, dark retreats, and laughter as "carbonated holiness" (Anne Lamott).Heromakers can be found on IG @heromakersmovement and on FB @heromakersmovement. Originally from Cincinnati, Jared Pettit went on to enjoy a prolific career in improv and comedy - both as a writer and as a performer - after studying screenwriting at DePaul University, as well as training as a comedian at the Second City Training Center. Yet it wasn't until performing in A Sketch of New York in NYC that he was inspired to co-found the Salty Nuts Improv Troupe with his fellow artists. For this week's episode, Anthony spoke with Jared about his experience training at Second City, the events leading up to the beginning of the Salty Nuts Troupe and the shows that followed, how other comedians should respond when called out for offensive jokes, and more! Last month marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Today's sponsor is CompHealth. To find out more visit financialresidency.com/comphealth
EP147: My guest this week is Jill Sherer Murray. Jill is an award-winning author, journalist, marketing, and communications expert, TEDx speaker, and founder of “Let Go For It,” a lifestyle brand aimed at improving people's situation through the simple mantra of letting go. In her TEDx Talk, “The Unstoppable Power of Letting Go” that has million views on YouTube, she shares her own difficult journey of letting go to successfully move forward. That experience led her to write her best-selling book, Big Wild Love: The Unstoppable Power of Letting Go for the many people who reached out to her from all over the world for advice and inspiration after watching her TEDx Talk. Jill studied improvisational comedy at the famous Second City Training Center in Chicago, wrote a popular blog called “Diary of a Writer in Mid-Life Crisis” for the former Wild River Review magazine, and let go of just about everything to be written about in Shape Magazine—12 times—as part of a year-long assignment to document her weight loss journey for readers. She's been featured on dozens of podcasts and in Reader's Digest, Bustle, Brit + Co, Travel & Leisure, Women's World, Thrive Global, Psychology Today, MSN.com, Happify Daily, Kintsugi, Josh Talks, TEDx, Moonshot Conversations, and more. Her life goal is to show people that if they're stuck, holding on to what they do NOT want, is not where they need to stay. They don't need another person to create forward motion--or permission. They just need to choose to let go and know they have everything they need inside of them RIGHT NOW to have the life they desire! Whether talking about love or work or whatever, Jill finds just talking about using letting go as a tool for creating change--and not just in conceptual terms, but in practical terms---inspires people to take action. After receiving a degree in theatre from Northwestern, I went through the Second City Training Center and then spent a couple of years performing improv in Chicago and touring with various improv groups. As part of Wavelength, an ensemble committed to creating shows for educators, my passion for teaching was reignited. I pursued a Master's Degree in Teaching from Harvard University and upon graduation, I spent a few years immersed in teaching acting and drama full time. I eventually returned to my adopted hometown of Chicago and have been blending my passions ever since. I've appeared in dozens of stage productions across Chicago, received two Joseph Jefferson Awards, and have appeared in a slew of commercials as well as various on camera projects, including a recurring role on CHICAGO MED, the upcoming features RAIN BEAU'S END and NOISE AND COLOR, and the short film STAGE FOUR, for which I recently received a Best Actress Nomination from the Midwest Independent Film Festival. I had the distinct honor of working with Jane Alderman behind the camera as she cast multiple television shows and films and have carried the lessons of that experience with me as both a teacher and actor. I'm thrilled to be a member of the faculty of the Theatre School at DePaul, the Chicago College of Performing Arts, and Acting Studio Chicago, where I teach on camera acting and auditioning for the theatre. Also, I love running, crocheting, and cats.https://www.rainbeausend.com/The Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors. Now entering Greener Pastures! Greener Pastures is a comedy and satire site run by a bunch of writers obsessed with out-writing, out-joking and out-funnying each other! And because we love to writing satire, talking about it, and the people who do it, we've expanded into podcasting! Today, we interview Scott Dikkers! Scott Dikkers founded the world's first humor website, TheOnion.com, in 1996. A few years earlier he helped found the original Onion newspaper. He's served as The Onion's owner and editor-in-chief, on and off, for much of the last quarter century. Scott co-wrote and edited The Onion's first original book, Our Dumb Century, a look at recent history through front pages of The Onion. It's sold over a million copies, debuting as a #1 New York Times and #1 Amazon bestseller. He also co-wrote and edited The Onion's second original book, Our Dumb World, a world atlas parody, which also debuted on the New York Times bestseller list. In the mid-2000's, Scott headed up the creation of "The Onion News Network" web series, serving as a director and executive producer. The series gave rise to many viral videos and a TV series on IFC. The web shorts won a Peabody Award in 2008. Scott led The Onion's rise from small, unknown college humor publication to internationally respected comedy brand. He gathered a talented team of writers and editors over the years, working with them to develop The Onion's culture of creative freedom and brutal honesty, its distinct comic voice, and its reliable process for generating award-winning satire, day after day. This unique process is spelled out in Scott's books, How to Write Funny, and the second in the series, How to Write Funnier, which are the basis of the Writing with The Onion program he created and teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Scott offers other courses and free resources for comedy writers on the How to Write Funny website. His work with The Onion, its website and other ancillary products, earned Scott the #43 spot on Time magazine's list of the Top 50 “Cyber Elite” alongside such iconic figures as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and George Lucas. Scott began his career in the entertainment business with his self-syndicated comic strip, Jim's Journal. The popular college cartoon, comprised of little more than stick figures, spawned a self-published book collection that became a national bestseller. Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Jim” one of America's top ten favorite writers in 1992. Scott continues to draw and animate cartoons under the banner of the Dikkers Cartoon Company. In addition to his other work, Scott is an accomplished voice actor who's performed in many national commercials, video games and animated cartoons, including Saturday Night Live's “TV Funhouse.” He's also written and directed several award-winning short films, and two feature films, Spaceman, and Bad Meat. Website = Fan forever Another interview coming at you next Monday, so stay tuned! Follow us on Twitter at @greenerpastsat and on Medium at Greener Pastures Magazine.

Today my guest Ele and I will be uncovering how common sounds in entertainment get made through the art of Foley. Ele is a stage Foley Designer and Performer who has designed, choreographed, and performed Foley for over 80 productions in Chicagoland, with companies including Theatre of Western Springs, Lifeline Theatre, Oak Park Festival Theatre, and The Second City Training Center. She is a Foley designer in residence for Locked Into Vacancy Entertainment's monthly live comedy serials, and for WildClaw Theatre's Deathscribe, the annual international live horror radio festival. She contributes to the next generation of Foley Artists with her guest lectures at Northwestern University's School of Sound and at Harvard University's School of Music, and with her consulting for theaters across the globe.Remember: Sound is an essential part of the storytelling experience. Whether you’re in theater or film, it’s easy to get excited about sound when it comes to sounds effects like body hits for a fight sequence or blasts in an explosion. But those are not the only sounds that carry a story forward, so don’t overlook the “everyday sounds” within your project.Research: Review a current script you’re working on. What everyday sounds that would naturally be in the scene are important in order to tell the story? What sounds showcase a character’s emotions? What sounds can be used for foreshadowing? Make sure to take note of any sounds that need to be prioritized during production or post-production.Challenge: As an ongoing challenge, focus on collecting sounds for your project. This can be done through collecting physical objects that create unique noises or simply taking notes of interesting sounds you hear that you would love to incorporate in your next story. http://www.victoriaruke.comTo learn more about Ele and her projects:http://www.wildclawtheatre.com/http://www.lockedintovacancy.com/Follow her on social media: @WorldBShiny
This week on Yes But Why, I spoke with Sheri Flanders, a Chicago-based actor, comedian, writer, and visual artist. Sheri Flanders is an instructor at the Second City Training Center in Chicago, and her performance background ranges from improv, stand up, musical theater, commercials, Shakespeare, corporate training and voice over work. Sheri is half of the interracial married sketch comedy duo, Flanders. Sheri is a writer of sketch comedy, musicals, screenplays, satire, film reviews, and artist interview features. As a freelance journalist, her work has been featured in several publications including the Chicago Sun-Times, The Chicago Reader, Rescripted The Chicago Defender and McSweeney's. In both 2020 and 2021, she was invited to cover the Sundance Film Festival as part of their Press Inclusion Initiative. In this episode, we discuss all the ways in which Sheri has made art a priority in her life. She started out with a passion for fashion design that gave her an outlet for her creativity while also satisfying the need to build something with her hands. We talk about how difficult it can be to turn your art into a business (and how sometimes that's not the right move). We talk about the consulting company she started with her husband and the work they do helping small businesses with grant writing, branding and marketing. We talk about how much she loves her community in Chicago. Sheri tells me about how her start in creative writing was working on a screenplay with her husband, and how that collaborative process led them both to take classes at Second City. Sheri talks about the Chicago improv community and doing bits with her husband. (So fun!) We talk about navigating life transitions and being patient with yourself during the process. Support Sheri Flanders by reading her recent pieces in The Chicago Reader and the Chicago Sun-Times! You can also watch funny comedy videos she has made with her husband as the comedy duo, Flanders! This week on Yes But Why, we talk to Austin based actress and voiceover artist, Danu Uribe. Danu Uribe is an Emmy-nominated, full-time voice-over and on-camera talent for commercials, video games, film, animation, motion capture, corporate training, and eLearning projects. Danu has twenty years of audio and video studio experience. Danu earned her B.A. in Drama from Texas Woman's University, received her introduction to comedy performing with the critically acclaimed, multimedia sketch comedy troupe, The Latino Comedy Project, and then, completed studies in Writing and Improvisational Comedy at the historic Second City Training Center in Chicago. In our conversation, Danu talks about 4 years of touring the world with the live-action graphic novel show, The Intergalactic Nemesis. She talks about what a toll touring can take and yet how happy she is to have been able to do that before covid. I really loved the part where she told me about when The Intergalactic Nemesis was featured on CONAN. It was so wild that she got to perform with Conan O'Brien! In our chat, we talk about Danu's natural inclination toward entertaining. Danu tells me all about the path she has found in voice-over work and how much she enjoys the creative collaborations she has found in that industry. Danu also loves acting in film and TV and she is just SO DARN GOOD at it. Unlike many of my other guests on this podcast, I have gotten to see Danu perform onstage many times and she is always wonderful to watch! This is likely due to her dedication to her craft. Listen in as she talks about the work she has put in (and continues to do) to make sure she brings her best to the table. Danu is a hard worker and a kind soul and we had so much fun catching up. And you know what? Danu can be heard all over the country voicing brands such as Staples, Lowe's, Burlington Coat Factory, World Market and many more. Listen for her while you are Christmas shopping! Support Danu by watching her act on TV and in movies! Danu can be heard as the character “Toth” in the animated series, “Nomad of Nowhere" streaming on Amazon (added it to my list CHECK). Danu can also be seen in the feature film, "Call Me Brother" in live and virtual theaters now (dying to see that CHECK).
