500K people are confiding in an AI alien—and it's on track to generate $4M this year. It's called a Tolan: an animated AI character that can talk to you like your best friend. The company behind it, Portola, has 4x'd their ARR in the last month from viral growth on TikTok and Instagram. Tolan isn't just a hyper-growth startup—they're also exploring AI as a completely new creative tool, and storytelling medium. Their goal is to help their users go from overwhelmed to grounded, and it's working. Today, on AI & I, I sit down with two of the minds behind Tolans:My good friend Quinten Farmer, Portola's cofounder and CEO, and Eliot Peper, their head of story and a best-selling science fiction novelist. We get into:How to build AI personalities users love. During user onboarding, the team gathers information—through a light-touch personality quiz—and then uses frameworks like the Big Five and Myers-Briggs to shape a Tolan that mirrors the user; like an older sibling might. The aim is to create someone who feels familiar enough to be safe, but different enough to be interesting. Why AI characters are “improv actors”. Rather than scripting detailed prompts, the team trains Tolans to improvise—inspired by Keith Johnstone's book Impro, where he talks about building strong narratives through free association and recombination. How “memory” is critical to developing compelling characters. Tolans develop their personalities through “situations”: small narrative setups (a memory, a joke, an embarrassing moment) the Tolan reacts to, remembers, and gradually weaves into its character; accumulating into something that feels like a real lived experience. Why response time is everything for voice AI interactions. A Tolan has at most two seconds to curate the right context about a user and deliver a reply that feels genuine—the team has found that even half a second slower can break the user's immersive interaction with the AI.The future of AI as a totally new creative medium. New technologies bring about new formats and new mediums. AI creates the opportunity for creatives to tell completely new kinds of stories—if they're brave enough to try it.“White mirror” technologies that make you feel more like yourself. Amid concerns that tech drives polarization and isolation, Tolan offers a counterexample: a tool designed to make the best of what humanity knows about being a flourishing individual available on demand. The company's north star is helping users go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling grounded. This is a must-watch for anyone exploring AI as a creative medium—or curious about the future of human-AI relationships. If you found this episode interesting, please like, subscribe, comment, and share! Today we've got Felipe Velez on the podcast, a close friend of mine from the improv theatre scene here in Melbourne. I know, I know, weird topic, but I want everyone to know about it. We're catching Felipe as he's on his way back to Columbia for the next big chapter of his life. He's easily amongst the funniest and most wholesome people I've ever met. If anything we talk about sounds interesting, look up a local improv school, preferably one that uses Keith Johnstone's material quite heavily. I attend a place called Impro Melbourne, which I highly recommend. And finally, thanks to Dennis Crenshaw for helping with the audio. As always, all good things are Dennis and all bad things were probably me.
Today's guest is an amazing person to watch and get to know. And his name is Dan O'Connor. Dan has been performing and teaching improvisation all over the world since 1986. He has developed engaging methods of narrative improvisation to create visceral unscripted theatre experiences. He is one of the co-founders of BATS Improv in San Francisco and LA Theatresports, and he is also the founder of the critically acclaimed Impro Theatre in Los Angeles. Dan has had the opportunity to train and work with some amazing talent including Keith Johnstone, Phelim McDermott, Lee Simpson, and Wayne Brady. He has performed with The Groundlings, Second City, and many other theatre companies around the world. Dan has co-authored two books, which both talk about using improvisation to lead a happier and more connected life. Learn more about this fantastic guy by visiting his website, danoconnor.net. And be sure to check out his two books “Life UnScripted-Using Improv Principles to Get Unstuck, Boost Confidence, and Transform Your Life” and “Ensemble! Using the Power of Improv To Forge Connections in a Lonely World”, available on Amazon and wherever books are sold. And as always, don't forget to rate and review!

[I'm on vacation this week, so I'm re-upping one of my favorite interviews from the last year. I'll be back with new episodes next week!] My friend and fellow Kaizen-Muse creativity coach, Nina Hart, was one of my first guests, and she comes back to the podcast today. Nina is an author and performer—including being an original member of San Francisco's experimental dance troupe, Contraband, and, playing a purple electric bass, recording and performing with numerous bands—and I invited her to dig into Keith Johnstone's groundbreaking book on theatrical improvisation, Impro, with me. I knew Nina would have a lot to say about how we unknowingly are our own biggest obstacles to our own creativity, which is a primary focus of the book. We talk about the role status plays in our lives and our perception of things like permission and perfection, how cultural and societal expectations create the fears that hold us back, the importance of feeling safe to let those fears go, and much more. Please leave a review and in it, tell us when you feel most safe to express yourself. Want more? Here's a handy playlist with all my previous interviews with guests in acting and theatre! Michael P. Farrell's Collaborative Circles: Friendship Dynamics and Creative Work (2001) is about how groups of people ("circles") begin with discomfort about the status quo and, after collaboration and discussion, make creative breakthroughs. It's based on six case studies. Four are circles of artists and painters, one looks at the early development of Freud's psychoanalysis, and one is devoted to a particular group of "first wave" feminist agitators. This episode aims to tempt you to want to learn more: by summarizing two of Farrell's case studies. My original thinking was that Farrell's model of circle development would be generally applicable to software teams dissatisfied with the status quo of development and who didn't fit common models like forming-storming-norming-performing. As I dug into the details, I realized it's not as widely applicable as I'd hoped, at least without substantial customization. So the episode ends with some reasons you might not want to listen to the next one. But I hope you do!Other sources and referencesCem Kaner and James Bach, Context-driven testing, 2012?Cem Kaner, James Bach, and Bret Pettichord, Lessons Learned in Software Testing: a Context-Driven Approach, 2001Donald Davidson, "Lee in the Mountains", 1938The "Yes, and..." rule in improvisational comedy.

In this episode, Adam and Budi discuss their first choice for The Theatre of Others Book Club, Impro by Keith Johnstone. KEITH JOHNSTONE (1933-2023) was one of the few internationally recognized authorities in the field of improvisation, great chunks of which he created, including Theatresports™, Maestro Impro©, Gorilla Theatre™, and The Life Game©. Keith has written two best-selling books about his Theatre and Improvisation theories and practices, in addition to several plays and short stories. His books, Impro and Impro For Storytellers, have been translated into many languages. Keith's ideas about improvisation, behavior, and performance appeal to a wide variety of groups: from actors to psychotherapists, improvisation companies to drama schools and theatre companies, business and management training specialists and humanities research institutes, universities and film production companies have invited him to come to teach them about his ideas, and how they might apply them. He founded the Theatre Machine Improvisation group in England in 1967, touring Europe and North America, and was the Co-founder and Artistic Director of The Loose Moose Theatre Company in Calgary, Canada from 1977 to 1998. He founded The International Theatresports™ Institute in 1998. Ajatusääniä-podcastin 47. jakso on omistettu improvisaatiopedagogi Keith Johnstonen (1933-2023) muistolle.
Stephen Nachmanovitch is the author of both Free Play and more recently The Art of Is. Yo Yo Ma wrote that “Stephen Nachmanovitch'sThe Art of Is is a philosophical meditation on living, living fully, living in the present. To the author, an improvisation is a co-creation that arises out of listening and mutual attentiveness, out of a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. It is a product of the nervous system, bigger than the brain and bigger than the body; it is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, unprecedented and unrepeatable. Drawing from the wisdom of the ages,The Art of Is not only gives the reader an inside view of the states of mind that give rise to improvisation, it is also a celebration of the power of the human spirit, which — when exercised with love, immense patience, and discipline — is an antidote to hate.” This was an amazingly inspiring conversation, extremely wide-ranging, including some musical improvisation. I've included timestamps to help listeners navigate the many topics we touched on including many important artists, which include: Yehudi Menuhin, John Cage, William Blake, Herbert Zipper, Keith Johnstone, Ali Akbar Khan The video is here, and the transcript will also soon be linked on my podcast website: https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/stephen-nachmanovitch-author-of-free-play-and-the-art-of-is Please buy me a coffee? Communicatie is per definitie improviseren. On the day before his 9th birthday, legendary improvised theatre teacher Keith Johnstone made a decision that changed his life. In this episode, I share what he did, why it was life changing and how you can do it too.
For this episode, Whit has a conversation with Jay Sukow — a US improviser based in LA, but in New Zealand traveling for this recording. After catching up a bit, we jumped into an amazing conversation about his favorite (by far) of over 300 10-minute scenes that he's been doing since early on in the pandemic. This is all the more impressive given that his online series “10 Minutes with…” where he improvises a 10 minute scene with someone from anywhere on the planet, has over 100,000 views. Jay is very much about positivity towards improv and saying yes within your improv. This has led to a continued desire and enthusiasm for improv and improv community online – something that we also spend some time talking about in this episode. As far as Jay's background, he's been improvising for nearly 30 years. A few of those he has trained with include Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, David Razowsky, Keith Johnstone, Del Close, Charna Halpern, Jeff Michalski and Mick Napier. He is a graduate of training centers of The Second City, The Second City NW, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago and the founder of Today Improv. He also served as the Artistic Director/Head of Training at the Improv Comedy Copenhagen Theatre, where he taught improv and sketch comedy to expats from all around the world. He previously taught for Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater, iO Chicago (where he was also head of its artistic committee), iO West and ComedySportz Chicago, and has taught at many improv festivals around the world, including the Oslo Impro Festival, the Copenhagen International Improv Festival, the Barcelona Improv Festival and the Chicago Improv Festival. He is the winner of The Golden Pineapple, awarded to the best visiting teacher at Improv Comedy Copenhagen. At the Westside Comedy Theater, Jay is in the cast of Mission Improvable and Improv Famous, an Armando-style show featuring some of the best improvisors on the planet. He is also part of the duo Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and was an ensemble member of ComedySportz Chicago, several weekend “house” improv teams at iO Chicago and many other improv and sketch comedy groups. At least, that's the in person stuff! Also, Jay is the co-host of ImprovCast with Jay and Landon. Follow Jay and Jay-related stuff at: JaySukow.com Today Improv Facebook Twitter Instagram Jay also appeared as a panelist on the first session of the Covid-19 Improv Summit and both sessions related to online improv in the Summit.
Sean chats with Kaisa about her experiences training with Keith Johnstone and at IO Chicago, teaching and performing all over the world and setting up her own theatre in Helsinki.

It was an honor to speak with Keith Johnstone, pioneer of improvisational theatre, and creator of Theatresports. Keith describes his early life in Britain as a school teacher, his genius in inspiring the most difficult kids, then his work developing theatrical improvisation, where it was at the time, illegal! Keith eventually immigrates to Canada and initiates Canada's first improv company in Calgary, Theatresports.
Veena talks about her 30+ years performing on stage and in film, how being Indo Canadian has recently become an asset getting roles, and how improv from legend Keith Johnstone, shaped her career.

Our second episode in Season 3* is with the incomparable, Patti Stiles! Patti learned improv and theatre at the famed Loose Moose Theatre Company in Calgary with Keith Johnstone as a direct mentor. She subsequently moved to Melbourne from where she works as an actor, improviser, director, instructor and playwright. Many in the improv community know all this, as few have traveled the world teaching and encouraging improv at the level that Patti does. This particular conversation occurred in early 2020, before COVID-19 and so much more -- so this is a rich and full conversation on the art of improv that I know you'll enjoy. But you can also hear more from Patti in the first, fourth, fifth and last sessions of the COVID-19 Summit. Patti has an infectious enthusiasm for improvisation that comes through, but is equally matched by her insight into improvisation technique, strong narrative skill and her spirit of play. Prepare to be inspired, and then be sure to look for more about and from Patti at pattistiles.com and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. * Note that what was to be Season 2 was pushed to Season 3 in light of the COVID-19 lockdown and the Summit that followed. This episode, and several others in Season 3, were recorded in January and February, 2020. No doubt that different conversations and topics would have been considered if this conversation had occurred later.

Inspirational, irascible and as talented an improvisor as you could invent, Matt Besser is the kind of stand-up who can skilfully weave a set live on TV. He is also constantly referred to as a co-founder of the enormously significant Upright Citizens Brigade, which arguably serves him right for co-founding it. We take a deep dive into the genesis of the Chicago improv scene, learn about Del Close and his influence on everything that was to follow, and argue about Keith Johnstone. Matt also dissects his own bad habits in improv, ponders the relativity of success, and identifies the one type of comic he won't perform with... Matt Besser's brand new stand-up special "Pot Humour" is out now on Apple/iTunes, Amazon, DirectTV VOD, Spectrum VOD, Xbox and pretty much every VOD platform you might use. Begrebet 'Teatersport' bruges i følge Steen Haakon forkert.
This episode's guest is Keith Johnstone. Keith is a director, playwright and teacher who is internationally regarded as a pioneer of improvisational theatre. He is co-founder of the legendary Loose Moose Theatre Company which he formed in 1977 and his books "Impro" and "Impro for Storytellers" have become much cherished essential texts for those who are interested in spontaneity and creativity. Recorded in Raynes Park, London.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/stevexoh)

Kat and Alex speak with Theresa Robbins Dudeck and Caitlin McClure the co-editors of the new book Applied Improvisation: Leading, Collaborating, and Creating Beyond the Theatre. This is an incredible new development in the field of Applied Improvisation that draws back the curtain on an exciting, innovative, growing field of practice and research that is changing the way people lead, create, and collaborate Despite some technical difficulties, we persevered in our quest to speak with Theresa and Caitlin and talked to them about how they first began collaborating on this book. We also discuss how they both began improvising, their experience keeping the magic of improv alive in the working world, Keith Johnstone, and of course, get them to share some Dre to Be Human Stories. “Every animal has a story to tell.” And we didn’t even get to them all! But we tried. This week I chatted with Dean Noble, Director of Marketing of the Santa Barbara Zoo. With a diverse background including the movie business, improv comedy, and theme parks, we discussed live events, storytelling, podcasts, Cary Grant, and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Dean Noble Dean Noble is currently the Director of Marketing at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Dean began his career in the entertainment industry and worked in feature film development and acquisitions for ITC Entertainment in Studio City, CA. He spent 10 years with the Universal Studios Recreation Group and was part of the Grand Opening Marketing Team for the two-billion-dollar Universal Studios Japan theme park in Osaka. He was part of the PR team, marketing training team and brand-managed licensing relationships for Steven Spielberg, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Marvel Entertainment, Peanuts, and Sesame Street, among others. He has a BA in English from Pepperdine University and an MBA from California Lutheran University was privileged to teach ‘The Zoo’ class at Cal State University Channel Islands. Dean grew up in Honolulu, studied in London and Heidelberg and has circumnavigated the globe. Be sure to ask Dean about Improv-Ology the popular comedy/science evenings he hosts at the beautiful Santa Barbara Zoo and the new radio show he co-hosts, Zoological Radio, which is produced in conjunction with KCLU FM/NPR for the Central Coast. Episode Highlights So, how does one end up as Director of Marketing at a zoo? I had to ask! Dean’s creative background with standup comedy and show business provided a very different type of marketing training. However, given the diverse forms of content we have to create, it needed up being a perfect combination. Story books. A self-proclaimed “book worm,” Dean shared some of his favorite resources for telling brand stories including Writing for Dough, Bill Idelson’s Writing Class, and Impro by Keith Johnstone (a favorite of mine). He also mentioned another recent branding book by an author that may be familiar to listeners of the show. I think it was called Brand … Now …? Thanks for the shoutout, Dean! Branding a zoo. First, it’s important to understand that the Santa Barbara Zoo is a very different kind of zoo. Featuring open gardens and innovative animal experiences, Dean and his team have focused on providing a one-of-a-kind trip to the zoo. Cary Grant and branding? “Thousands of decisions come together to make one effect,” Dean introduced me to this quote from movie star Cary Grant which is applicable to branding as well. “That’s what a brand is!" What brand has made Dean smile recently? Dean recounted his international travels and experience with Universal Studios. Talk about smiles! To learn more, check out his podcast at zooradio.org. As We Wrap … Before we go, I want to flip the microphone around to our community … Gabriel Cohen gave us a shout on Twitter for my recent interview with Justin Wartell. Thanks for listening! Affirmation is the key to improv. It's a way to become more spontaneous, creative, and achieve true collaboration. But at a time when Keith Johnstone's foundational text, Impro is also on Peter Thiel's employee reading list, at what point does "yes, and..." become a tool for blind compliance? In this episode, Aliya examines three iterations of comedian Chris Locke's joke about going to therapy to understand why improv is the multitool of comedy. After taking an 18-hour improv intensive, Aliya hires four improvisers to improvise her improv class, and Misha Glouberman remembers the days when improv was punk. A retired professional woman, arrested while wandering in traffic is found to be under the influence of a potent "drug cocktail." She is ordered by the court to undergo treatment, and placed in a clinic run by a psychiatrist who has her own difficult history. Join us for an interview with Chad Elliot. He grew up a shy, home-schooled kid, but that didn't stop him from becoming Seattle's preeminent improv coach. In this episode, Chad talks about how he adapts improv techniques to help people improve their communication skills—not just on the stage, but in their personal and professional lives as well. We explore how we can adapt those same lessons to improve our interviewing skills, and what it means to be the best listener for our personal history clients. Some of the things we cover: Chad's childhood and the winding path that brought him to where he is today Tony Robbins, hitchhiking, and ballroom dancing Using dance as a way to break through social fears and to experience the physical power of touch Keith Johnstone's influential book, Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre Improv and its opportunity for people to be more expressive and better communicators Viola Spolin and letting go of the ego Leveraging the power of Meetups to attract new students and hone your teaching skills (brilliant idea, Chad!) Brenda Ueland's beautiful treatise on the gift of listening to others The main reasons people go into their own heads and stop listening to others Paying attention to the gap between body language and what someone says Establishing a sense of trust as a personal historian working with a new client Using counterintuitive methods to turn off your own limiting filters Story scavenger hunts Taking a lesson from the great interviewer and journalist Cal Fussman Priming your mind, then letting go To connect with Chad, visit him at seattleimprovclasses.com. If you’re a fan of improv, comedy, business, or just being a mensch, this is the interview for you. After all, how do you argue with someone who also thinks that farts are funny. They demonstrate an adventurous improv game of “What Comes Next?” (1:43), define what they mean by adventure (6:59), and describe why a Keith Johnstone quote (10:07 ) and an exercise called “The Quest” (13:08) get them jazzed about the topic. Today’s guest on “ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky” is Jules Munns. Jules is the Co-Artistic Director of The Nursery, the great improv school in London. Jules is a passionate improvisor and teacher, who has studied under our friends Patti Stiles, Susan Messing, Rachael Mason, and Keith Johnstone. He studied at the Guildhall School, which specializes in classical theater, and when you watch him play, it comes through. Jules and his Co-Artistic Director Judith Amsenga have brought me out to London to teach and perform many times. The actors of The Nursery are truly inspiring. Over too many cups of thick coffee we chatted about overcoming challenges, the journey to acceptance, and, in Jules’ words, learning to “just be with the stuff that’s happening here.” This is one great chat recorded in a flat in London.

I wanted to put together something a little different for you today. You probably don’t know (yet) that I spent some time learning the art of physical comedy - you might call it “clown school” - at the Celebration Barn, here in South Paris, Maine. Looking back on the 15 years since then, it’s remarkable how many things I learned, about being present, about being a “yes,” and about rolling with whatever happens - that actually apply in real life. I mean, it only makes sense, right - otherwise why would theater and comedy, good theater and comedy, be so compelling? In the words of Will Shakespeare: All the world’s a stage - and today’s guest is going to help you see how to use that to your advantage in life, and in your relationship! First let me ask you - what do you do to keep things playful with your partner? Are you inadvertently sabotaging the flow of good feelings, good energy, and goodwill in the way that you interact with each other? Is it possible that your fear of making mistakes is getting in the way of being fully there, in the moment? Today’s guest is going to talk about how to get over whatever fear is there so that you and your partner can keep building and growing in your connection. Our guest’s name is Patti Stiles, and she is one of the world’s foremost experts on the art of improvisational theater. She studied directly with Keith Johnstone, author of the book "Impro", at the Loose Moose Theater, and has been working professionally acting, teaching, directing all over the world - since 1983. In today’s conversation, we’re going to talk about how to foster trust, acceptance, and playfulness in your relationship - so that once you see your life as a great work of improvisation - you’ll be able to do it...better! Patti discusses the following topics: What is good improvisation? Does bad improvisation exist? Funny improv vs. reflective improv Improvisation and real-life overlap in many areas Realize it’s ok to make mistakes-this reduces fear and anxiety It’s a challenge to help people overcome the fear of failure Our partners are always making bids for our attention. Being a “Yes,” being neutral, blocking—what do they look like? What if you don’t want to be a YES? Teaching improvisation is teaching to be present. “Make your partner look good.” The dilemma for a teacher/performer when students are glued to their cell phones We don’t value the present moment in society today. How you are isn’t equal to what you’re doing. Sometimes doing something playful and joyous can bring the person back to the present. Being creative can help overcome the boring routine. Couples who are “stuck” usually think they themselves are boring. When a relationship becomes “all about me,” then the focus is no longer on the story or the present. There are exercises you can do to help your partner look good, like “Yes, let’s!” Learn to use the “Happy Nope.” Contribute value to your partner’s world by inspiring their joy. Is there a playful way to interrupt a partner’s assumption about me? Improvisation seeks to bring people into places of trust, acceptance, and play.

Zehn Tage geballter Keith-Action.
