Story time! One of my favourite (and top!) courses was drama, which I took throughout my high school years. Also acted in numerous school plays as well, and when I broke the news to my teachers (and even to my high school principal!) that I was accepted by U of C for Drama major, they all told me, "I knew you'd make it!". My principal even said, "You might be back here in few years TEACHING drama!" I was thinking: "Hey, I may even become a Drama prof at universities!" Anything was possible, as my confidence was in sky high! Well, by the end of my second year at U of C, I had to make some decisions, because I was flunking pretty bad! Anymore bad scores, and I'm OUT! So I had to make decisions fast. After much thinking, since I was already using my drama and theatre experience with my radio show, I've decided to go ahead and change majors. I absolutely have no regret in trying, and to this day, I still incorporate some of the teachings of late Dr. Keith Johnstone, the ONLY prof. that actually gave me decent scores! Calgary was lucky to have such an AMAZING coach! As for me, I still have NO regrets for trying, and you won't always get the result you want, but you just make the best of it, and remember to be HAPPY!Playlist: Deathraiser - One Step to the GraveDeathraiser - Thrash or Be ThrashedDeathrow - Pledge To DieDeath - Left To DieCulled - CoercionDecapitated - Suffer the Children (Napalm Death cover)Napalm Death - Inside the Torn ApartTerrorizer - Fear of NapalmJungle Rot - When the Elders RiseJungle Rot - Savage RiteJungle Rot - Murder OneFleshcrawl - Reign ForeverVader - Rapid Fire (Judas Priest cover)Slayer - Dissident Aggressor (Judas Priest cover)Arch Enemy - Starbreaker (Judas Priest cover)Judas Priest - Raw DealTwisted Sister - Sin After SinDee Snider - For the Love of MetalPrimal Fear - Living For MetalNukem - Into the Kill ZoneNukem - TV Crime (Black Sabbath cover)Black Sabbath - Sins of the FatherDio - Night PeopleDokken - Night By NightKreator - Gangland (Tygers of Pan Tang cover)Tygers of Pan Tang - BlackjackFastway - Easy Livin'Uriah Heep - Easy Livin'Edguy - Out Of ControlBlue Oyster Cult - After DarkBudgie - Breaking All the House RulesPeter Frampton - Breaking All the RulesBilly Squier - You Know What I LikeBilly Squier - In The DarkBilly Squier - The StrokeAC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt CheapAC/DC - Shot Down in FlamesAC/DC - Shoot To ThrillAC/DC - C.O.D.Diesel - Sausolito SummernightDonnie Iris - Ah Leah!REO Speedwagon - Don't Let Him GoREO Speedwagon - Take It On a RunHanabie - Gal This Summer

Meet the wonderful Bev Fox! Bev has run Boho Arts' School of Improv in Newcastle-upon-Tyne UK since 2003, serving a vibrant creative community of people from all walks of life. Bev's improv journey began in 1988 on a rainy night in London when, as aspiring actors, she and her young sweetheart - now long-term partner - Ian McLaughlin ventured out through the storm to an improv class. That “sliding doors” moment changed their lives. Over nearly four decades, Bev has performed, taught and developed improvisation across stage, film, TV and radio. She is also a co-founding member of The Suggestibles, Newcastle's professional improv ensemble. Bev and Ian's teaching, grounded in training with Keith Johnstone and other pioneers of the form, continues to evolve. They love to invent, explore and inspire. You can see Bev's interviews with Keith Johnstone that have become valuable teaching resources for improvisers worldwide on YouTube. Bev established Boho Arts as a charity in 2021 during the pandemic, inspired by the global improv community they reached and how improv connected people from around the world to their local Newcastle groups. The experience proved especially meaningful, highlighting the positive impact of laughter, human connection and cultural diversity on both their own and their students' wellbeing, while sparking fresh ideas for improv on camera and for when the world would open up again. In 2026, they will open a new community arts hub in Newcastle, a "Third Place" dedicated to improv, creativity and wellbeing. 500K people are confiding in an AI alien—and it's on track to generate $4M this year. It's called a Tolan: an animated AI character that can talk to you like your best friend. The company behind it, Portola, has 4x'd their ARR in the last month from viral growth on TikTok and Instagram. Tolan isn't just a hyper-growth startup—they're also exploring AI as a completely new creative tool, and storytelling medium. Their goal is to help their users go from overwhelmed to grounded, and it's working. Today, on AI & I, I sit down with two of the minds behind Tolans:My good friend Quinten Farmer, Portola's cofounder and CEO, and Eliot Peper, their head of story and a best-selling science fiction novelist. We get into:How to build AI personalities users love. During user onboarding, the team gathers information—through a light-touch personality quiz—and then uses frameworks like the Big Five and Myers-Briggs to shape a Tolan that mirrors the user; like an older sibling might. The aim is to create someone who feels familiar enough to be safe, but different enough to be interesting. Why AI characters are “improv actors”. Rather than scripting detailed prompts, the team trains Tolans to improvise—inspired by Keith Johnstone's book Impro, where he talks about building strong narratives through free association and recombination. How “memory” is critical to developing compelling characters. Tolans develop their personalities through “situations”: small narrative setups (a memory, a joke, an embarrassing moment) the Tolan reacts to, remembers, and gradually weaves into its character; accumulating into something that feels like a real lived experience. Why response time is everything for voice AI interactions. A Tolan has at most two seconds to curate the right context about a user and deliver a reply that feels genuine—the team has found that even half a second slower can break the user's immersive interaction with the AI.The future of AI as a totally new creative medium. New technologies bring about new formats and new mediums. AI creates the opportunity for creatives to tell completely new kinds of stories—if they're brave enough to try it.“White mirror” technologies that make you feel more like yourself. Amid concerns that tech drives polarization and isolation, Tolan offers a counterexample: a tool designed to make the best of what humanity knows about being a flourishing individual available on demand. The company's north star is helping users go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling grounded. This is a must-watch for anyone exploring AI as a creative medium—or curious about the future of human-AI relationships. If you found this episode interesting, please like, subscribe, comment, and share! Want even more?Sign up for Every to unlock our ultimate guide to prompting ChatGPT here: https://every.ck.page/ultimate-guide-to-prompting-chatgpt. We're catching Felipe as he's on his way back to Columbia for the next big chapter of his life. He's easily amongst the funniest and most wholesome people I've ever met. I attend a place called Impro Melbourne, which I highly recommend. And finally, thanks to Dennis Crenshaw for helping with the audio.  Michael P. Farrell's Collaborative Circles: Friendship Dynamics and Creative Work (2001) is about how groups of people ("circles") begin with discomfort about the status quo and, after collaboration and discussion, make creative breakthroughs. It's based on six case studies. Four are circles of artists and painters, one looks at the early development of Freud's psychoanalysis, and one is devoted to a particular group of "first wave" feminist agitators. This episode aims to tempt you to want to learn more: by summarizing two of Farrell's case studies. My original thinking was that Farrell's model of circle development would be generally applicable to software teams dissatisfied with the status quo of development and who didn't fit common models like forming-storming-norming-performing. As I dug into the details, I realized it's not as widely applicable as I'd hoped, at least without substantial customization. So the episode ends with some reasons you might not want to listen to the next one. My friend and fellow Kaizen-Muse creativity coach, Nina Hart, was one of my first guests, and she comes back to the podcast today. Nina is an author and performer—including being an original member of San Francisco's experimental dance troupe, Contraband, and, playing a purple electric bass, recording and performing with numerous bands—and I invited her to dig into Keith Johnstone's groundbreaking book on theatrical improvisation, Impro, with me. I knew Nina would have a lot to say about how we unknowingly are our own biggest obstacles to our own creativity, which is a primary focus of the book. We talk about the role status plays in our lives and our perception of things like permission and perfection, how cultural and societal expectations create the fears that hold us back, the importance of feeling safe to let those fears go, and much more. Please leave a review and in it, tell us when you feel most safe to express yourself. Want more? Here's a handy playlist with all my previous interviews with guests in acting and theatre! Stephen Nachmanovitch is the author of both Free Play and more recently The Art of Is. Yo Yo Ma wrote that “Stephen Nachmanovitch'sThe Art of Is is a philosophical meditation on living, living fully, living in the present. To the author, an improvisation is a co-creation that arises out of listening and mutual attentiveness, out of a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. It is a product of the nervous system, bigger than the brain and bigger than the body; it is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, unprecedented and unrepeatable. Drawing from the wisdom of the ages,The Art of Is not only gives the reader an inside view of the states of mind that give rise to improvisation, it is also a celebration of the power of the human spirit, which — when exercised with love, immense patience, and discipline — is an antidote to hate.” This was an amazingly inspiring conversation, extremely wide-ranging, including some musical improvisation.
