Actor, writer and director, Erin Roth shares her methods in teaching artists and non-artists the techniques of master voice and Shakespeare teacher, Patsy Rodenburg. Learn to breathe with the most ease and to support your body in releasing stress and tension to pursue your purpose. Join me in this episode of Someone Gets Me ▶️ How To Find Your Gifted Voice with Erin Roth. Key point covered in this episode: ✔️ Gifted people hold themselves back. Often, people we find with a tight jaw are those who grew up being told not to say something and trying to hold their truth in. It's incredible what happens when you learn to break that energetic pattern and find safety in expressing yourself. ✔️ Free your gift by freeing your voice. As an actor, Erin trains by working with her body, breath, and voice. She has improved through these methods on herself and by also teaching others. "There's just no separation between the two. I always start on a very practical level, working physically with people on their breath system and freeing their voices. And when I say free your voice, it's freeing it from extra tensions, extra habits that make it hard to communicate or speak…” ✔️ Learn how to be OK taking up the space you take up in the world. Fear will always shut you down. Erin reminds us to learn to be OK with taking up the space you take up in the world. That's a physical, mental, emotional, and energetic thing we must learn to fulfill our purpose. ✔️ If you want to talk to your audience and the people you serve with the most impact, you've got to learn to be present, connect beyond words, and reach their hearts. As a gifted thespian, Erin delights in how live theater delivers so much impact for the actors and the audience. Presence plays a huge part in breaking through invisible walls and inviting people into an incredible connection where we can all contemplate our shared humanity together. ✔️ Mindfulness has become a fad lately, but it's something that will never go away. Numerous studies show tangible benefits, such as relieving pain and addressing anxiety and depression. People are waking up to the power of presence and being in that moment. How do you include mindfulness in your daily life? ———————————————————————————————— Erin Roth is a New York City-based Registered Rodenburg Teacher (RRT), trained and certified by master voice and Shakespeare teacher Patsy Rodenburg. Mia Leahy hails from Ireland where she was passionate from an early age about dance; ballet, Irish dancing and American tap, singing, and music, reciting poetry, and making up plays. This led to an exodus to London after a year at Cork University studying the Greeks and dancing a lot. Formed a highly unsuccessful punk band called the Nude Usherettes and thought the better of it and applied to drama school. She had encouragement and support from great actors like Kate Beswick, Derek Fowlds, Martin Cochrane, and Gilly Gabriel who accompanied her to audition for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she spent three arduous and magic years with some of the best in the profession; Patsy Rodenburg and Sue Lefton to name a few. Followed by years of theatre and some radio in England, Scotland, and Wales with an agent who was also a friend. Then a U-turn to do a degree at Goldsmith UCL in French Stage, Philosophy, and Cinema. The reading list was eclectic to say the least. Adding French literature to her love of all things old, middle and modern English, she ran away to Paris on completion of her degree.Years of teaching business English, a little writing, and some hard times – another U-turn to train as a coach and then theatre came knocking enthusiastically at the door again twelve years ago. Co wspólnego z nauką emisji głosu ma pandemia, zamordowanie George'a Floyda, przejawy rasizmu na uczelniach, "dekolonizowanie" programu nauczania. Zapraszam na rozmowę o poszukiwaniu swojego głosu. Tym razem zaprosiłem Jarka Sacharskiego, trenera głosu i wystąpień publicznych. Członka The British Voice Association, absolwenta MA in Training Actors in Voice w Guildhall School of Music and Drama w Londynie oraz Wydziału Aktorskiego Akademii Teatralnej w Warszawie. Będzie to też opowieść o poszukiwaniach głosu: z niewielkiego miasta na Mazowszu, przez Akademię Teatralną, do prowadzenia zajęć w Guildhall School of Music and Drama w Londynie, zajęć w Kenii, Malawi, Amsterdamie i Chinach. It would be hard to look at rhythm in all its forms without observing the breath and the way we speak. For over 40 years the world’s most formidable voice coach, Patsy Rodenburg, OBE, has done just that. Speaking to Patsy from her home in London, we discover her passion for storytelling, her focus on the breath and its rhythms which link us all. Patsy has worked with politicians, business leaders and actors including Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Daniel Craig. She’s collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre and is head of voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is the author of books on speech and presence and her great literary love, William Shakespeare. TOAST Podcast Series 5 is presented by Laura Barton and produced by Geoff Bird. Music for this season was written and performed by Laura James. All views expressed in the podcast are the interviewees own and not necessarily those of TOAST.

Similar to a dramaturg, one of the primary roles of this coach and teacher is to help make the text clear—that means both in how you deliver the words and also taking care of your instrument! Ursula Meyer is currently the head of graduate acting at UCSD. She has had the privilege of studying voice with Cicily Berry, Patsy Rodenburg, Andrew Wade, Arthur Lessac and is a designated Linklater teacher. She graduated with distinction from the Advanced Voice Studies Program at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London under David Carey. Zapraszam!

In this episode, I’m joined my friend, Dominick Bailey. Dominick is an actor, dancer, writer, and clinical pharmacist who asked the question, “How do I manipulate the volume of my voice?” Most of the time that I talk to clients about volume, it’s because they’re wondering how to have more volume, but Dominick asked the question because he’s sometimes gotten the feedback that he’s too loud. We talked about the ways in which our volume might be involuntarily affected by various circumstances, and I offered Dominick some tools to give him a better sense of how to consciously adjust his volume. You can find complete show notes and links to everything we’ve mentioned in the episode on https://www.voiceandspeechwithryan.com/podcast.

On this episode of Speaking Of… I’m joined by my friend, voice and acting teacher, Scott Ferrara. Scott specializes in coaching voice as well as acting for classical texts. He joined me to talk about “Shakespeare voice”—the tone and accent that many actors often go to when first exploring Shakespeare in performance. We talked about why he believes this is so common, and he shared some tools and experience for how to guide actors toward their more authentic voice. (And it is far more advanced than saying “Hey, don’t do that voice.”) While the main conversation is from the context of Shakespeare in performance, the conversation is absolutely relevant for actors of all genres and mediums, and even for non-performers interested in finding their more authentic voice. You can find complete show notes and links to everything we’ve mentioned in the episode on https://www.voiceandspeechwithryan.com/podcast.

Today on Speaking Of… I’m joined by actress, writer, director, and producer, Cara Myers. Cara asks about some specific challenges she’s experienced in performance. We start by talking about why she sometimes has a tendency to drop off of her words in performance and how to overcome this difficulty. Then Cara mentions an upcoming project where she’ll be performing on stage, and her concern about her ability to project her voice in a larger venue. Like many Los Angeles-based actors, most of Cara’s acting experience has been on camera, so finding ease in projecting her voice is a relatively new requirement for her. We talk about the major differences for speaking on camera vs. on stage, and I offer some tools for finding ease in projection regardless of the medium. You can find complete show notes and links to everything we’ve mentioned in the episode on https://www.voiceandspeechwithryan.com/podcast.

Welcome back to the Raising Successful Kids Podcast! Are you worried that your kid is too shy or too timid to go talk to other people? It’s time to improve their social skills. In this episode, Irene talks to Paul Doust, an actor, a playwright and a TV scriptwriter, about public speaking and presenting yourself in front of your audience. Discover today how the 3 circles of attention can help you ease your way into communicating with people and engaging them for discussions. Paul shares some great strategies, including ‘being present’, breathing properly, or speaking face to face. These could be perfect for your kids who have their entrepreneurial side and wants to start their journey as early as possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul Doust specializes in public speaking and more so, teaches his students to be themselves, to be ‘present’ and to communicate well with the listeners. Circles of attention: 1st: preoccupation with yourself. 2nd: connection with another person or a group of people. 3rd: aggression and domination. There’s a need for speaking and talking to people face to face. It’s difficult to be present with someone else when we communicate through technology. Paul emphasizes the importance of breathing. This ensures that your audience pays attention to what you’re saying. It also helps you regain your energy, circle back to your thoughts, and makes your audience think about the discussion. BEST MOMENTS "Voice work is so intimately connected to your own nature.” “You’re never as attractive or successful as you are when you are fully yourself." “The problem with education is this thing of being constantly measured – being told you’re not constantly good enough.” ABOUT THE GUEST Paul Doust trained at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, where he achieved a distinction in the school’s Acting and Theatre Production Diploma. Paul also holds his PTLLS certificate (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) along with the Certificate in Training Practice awarded by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, London. He has run many theatre workshops for young people - notably with The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. Paul has also written two plays for the NYT, co-directing one of them. He has scripted for TV series such as the BBC’s EastEnders and Holby City. His stage plays have been produced on the Edinburgh Fringe, in Australia (Melbourne Festival) and off-Broadway, New York. In 2018, Paul was a lead tutor on the final BTech theatre course to run at Broadstairs FE College (16 to 21-year-olds). In the same year, he completed his tutor’s training course with LAMDA and is now very excited to be offering their demanding - but uniquely rewarding - exams. Paul also runs private theatre workshops of his own. His courses include Stanislavski, Shakespeare and Second Circle Voice Work (having trained with the world-renowned voice teacher, Patsy Rodenburg). As well as approaches to acting - from High Comedy to Low Farce - Paul also teaches playwriting, script analysis and directing. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
Is a mother only as happy as her unhappiest child? In our experience, yeah, pretty much. And studies (referenced below) back that up– although they also suggest many parents also derive their greatest happiness from their child-raising. So how do we separate out our own sense of well-being from our children’s struggles? And in a more everyday sense, how do we find happiness in the daily slog? We talk it out with guest KJ Dell’Antonia, former lead editor of The New York Times’ Motherlode blog and author of the brand-new book How to be a Happier Parent: Raising a Family, Having a Life, and Loving (Almost) Every Minute. KJ says the key is finding simple, concrete solutions for what isn’t working– and letting go of some of the rest. As KJ puts it: When we’re not putting all our energy into getting our kids to eat and study and do everything exactly the way we want them to, we can put it into a much more positive place. Nobody’s saying that you have to live in denial of your kids’ reality. But we think disengaging from our children’s struggles just enough so that our happiness isn’t directly pegged to theirs is the key to happier, more effective parenting. Patsy Rodenburg divides her time between London, New York and Silves in Portugal. While London and New York is where she keeps busy, Silves is her place to retreat, write and recharge. I met Patsy in her farmhouse in Silves - a perfect setting for a conversation about presence. Surrounded by citrus groves and vineyards, with an unobstructed view of the Silves Castle on one side and white storks of the Algarve busily flying to and fro above us, we eventually settled in her kitchen with a cup of tea. Patsy was completely relaxed when I rearranged her furniture to minimise the echo of her newly renovated house, as if having people armed with huge mics and headphones was a daily occurrence on the farm. It wasn’t until I looked at her fridge that she set her boundaries. “I’m not switching that off.” she said, smiling. I took a mental note: “This is how you can be warm and firm at the same time.” Patsy and I sat opposite each other in the least “boomy” part of her house, crammed between her fridge and the kitchen window, when I asked my first question, the one i ask every CultureLab guest. “What were the early cultural influence that shaped you as a person?” Without any hesitation, Patsy replied, “Shakespeare”. She discovered the great English poet and playwright as a 9-year old girl and her life was never the same since. Since then, Patsy Rodenburg has become a world expert on teaching voice, speech and presentation skills, initially to actors, but more recently in high profile corporate spheres. And it’s through her work with Shakespeare that she developed the concept of the Three Circles of Energy that we talk about during the interview. We also talked about other really big topics - culture, leadership, fairness, service, redemption, love, and women’s voices. Being in conversation with Patsy, in second circle, was a really powerful and intimate experience. She truly practices what she preaches and I hope that you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed spending time with her. Episode highlights What Shakespeare can teach us about power, love and fairness - and how it can be applied in modern organisations The three circles of energy and why being in second is so important, particularly for leaders Why people lose their presence and live their lives disconnected (and what can be done about that) What enables creativity and high performance in organisations How leaders contribute to creating a healthy culture What great actors, singers and great leaders have in common Lessons Patsy learned while working in high security prisons The transformational practice of self-reflection and facing our own demons Why it’s not possible to think our way of certain situations - and what we should be doing instead Generosity and creating a healthy work environment Maintaining presence when speaking in public Tips for women to get their voices heard More about Patsy Rodenburg Patsy originally trained as an actor but soon moved into voice coaching, fast becoming an associate of the Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and eventually working as Head of Voice at the Royal National Theatre for 16 years. Her first book, The Right to Speak, was first published by Methuen in 1992 and was re-printed in 2015. Patsy then wrote The Need for Words (Methuen, 1993), The Actor Speaks (Methuen, 1997), and Speaking Shakespeare (Methuen, 2001), the last of which is viewed by the theatrical industry as a seminal work on the performance of Shakespeare. She has worked extensively with actors (including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Daniel Craig, and Natalie Portman), directors (Trevor Nunn, Richard Eyre, Franco Zeffirelli and Tim Burton) and playwrights (Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett), earning her OBE in 2005 for services to drama. She has also coached extensively for high profile politicians and statesmen. Her extensive experience in examining human interaction on a theatrical level has given her vast insight into the qualities that are required for success in the corporate world, concepts which are best explored in her books, Presence (Penguin, 2007) and Power Presentation (Penguin, 2009). Patsy is based in London but has taught all over the world transforming people from all walks of life, helping them to overcome perceived obstacles by helping them to redefine their presence. She is currently Professor of Text and Poetry at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she has been for 36 years and is on the board of directors with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Patsy also works extensively in the U.S.A from the Michael Howard Studios in New York. IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been wowed by her one-to-one clients who have all been taking extraordinary action… often the actions they have been most hesitant about taking and now are seeing really positive outcomes. Sherry’s been blown away by passion and energy in the room at the NCT Annual General Meeting and reflects on how passion, purpose and even anger, can be used positively to create momentum for change. (01.36 – 08.30) How have you been challenged? This week we talk about Finding Our Voice. We explore the importance of expression, passion, presence and connection as leaders, and discuss how impactful it can be for business or organisational leaders to share their personal stories with their communities and followers, in creating powerful human connection. Stories are also a great way of learning from others, and it is for that reason that we have invited a number of highly successful and inspirational entrepreneurs & business leaders to share their stories during our upcoming virtual conference, On The Tipping Point LIVE! which starts 27 November 2017. (08.31 – 34.15) So where are you building momentum right now? As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point. Sue’s exploring collaboration and, in particular, opportunities to work with businesses to create a culture of learning through role modelling (one of the best ways to accelerate learning!) of colleagues, mentors and gurus. Sherry shares her excitement over the response we’ve had to On The Tipping Point LIVE! not only from our speakers, but also from our followers as people hear about, and apply for, the Hot Seat Challenge! (34.15 – 40.05) How have you been inspired this week? Sue shares a story from a fellow coach who has launched a ‘liberation movement’ to liberate us from our to-do lists! Having shredded his to-do list, he was immediately liberated from the ‘energy of obligation and past commitments’, enabling him to create his future from the present moment and intention. Sherry’s been inspired by the passion and energy of her fellow NCT colleagues and how, when you gather together like minded, purposeful people, magic happens! (40.05 – 45.02) What else or what next? Sue concludes with a thought from Patsy Rodenburg: Presence will transform your life. Presence will invigorate every aspect of your life. Presence will awaken, within, your full potential. Sherry is going to investigate The Accidental Creative and commits to getting creative through developing more opportunities for live classes and group work. Michael Berkeley talks to Patsy Rodenburg, the most highly acclaimed voice teacher of her generation, about the music she loves. Patsy Rodenburg has worked with pretty much every actor you can name, including Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Daniel Day Lewis. They all testify to the huge impact she has had on their careers and performances. Among the many companies she's worked with all over the world are the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and she continues to teach drama students, as she has done for more than 20 years, at the Guildhall School of Music and the Michael Howard Studios in New York. Patsy tells Michael about her passion for helping everyone - actors, singers, children, business leaders and even prisoners - find their own natural, strong voice, a frequently moving and liberating experience. Among her choices is music by Sibelius, Strauss, Bach and Philip Glass. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus Production for BBc Radio 3.

William Shakespeare’s work changed our theatre, language and even, some say, the perceptions we have of ourselves. His 154 sonnets published in 1609 document his passions, both intellectual and personal. They inform and merge with many of his plays. Using his sonnets as springboards into his creative and personal life, this new devised piece by Guildhall's Head of Voice Patsy Rodenburg explores the theatre, acting, passions and politics of Shakespeare’s life. Joining us for this podcast are Patsy, co-director Sue Lefton, DSM Ellie Cheyette, and actors Bessie Carter and Akpore Uzoh. Go, make you ready takes place at Silk Street Theatre from 18-23 March 2016.
This week I wanted to broach the topic of Clarity. Most of us interested in vocal production and accent management are interested in being clear when we speak, right? Well I believe clarity begins inside us with our intention -- before we can communicate clearly we need to be clear about our intention, in our message that is born in our body-mind. The teacher I mention is Patsy Rodenburg and the book is: The Second Circle, How to use positive energy for success in every situation Send me comments and questions!

Kirsty Young's castaway is the renowned voice coach Patsy Rodenburg. Her work at the National Theatre and the RSC has spanned decades and her students include Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Maggie Smith and Daniel Day Lewis. But her work takes her away from the stage too - she has coached politicians and helped offenders in prison. She says: "I did some work on Hamlet in a top security prison and the guy playing Claudius was a murderer and he spoke, 'Oh my offence is rank, it smells to heaven', and he just broke."Producer: Leanne Buckle.

This week Libby Purves is joined by Jon Cousins, Paul Broda, Suggs and Patsy Rodenburg. Jon Cousins set up the website 'Moodscope' to help people manage their moods. Through his own personal experience of suffering from depression he used research by an American psychologist to create a site that lets fellow sufferers monitor their own wellbeing through a brief, daily online test. The results produce a "happiness number" that comforts those worried about their own state of mind, and the results can also be e-mailed to concerned friends or relatives. Paul Broda is a micro-biologist. His memoir 'Scientist Spies', centres on the lives of his mother, father and stepfather, the latter two spies who passed nuclear secrets to the Russians in the 1940s. He also describes how from early childhood his own life was shaped by his family life and influences. 'Scientist Spies - a memoir of my three parents and the Atom Bomb' is published by Matador. Suggs, real name Graham McPherson, is the singer, actor, broadcaster, but is probably best known as the frontman of the pop/ska band 'Madness'. He is performing his first solo show 'LIVE SUGGS! The Rambunctious Recollections of the Madness Front Man' - a 'stand-up memoir' - as he looks back on his life as he reaches fifty. He's also in the Radio 4 Saturday play Deep Down and Dirty Rock 'n' Roll about two musicians in mid-life meltdown. Patsy Rodenburg has been Head of Voice at the Guildhall School for the last twenty-six years. She is about to direct Richard III at the school. Recently listed number 15 in the Times' most influential people in theatre list, she is acknowledged as one of the world's leading voice coaches. Richard III is at the Bridewell Theatre, Fleet Street, EC4.
