How Democrats Can Win Back Men with Mark W. Sutton

If the past few US presidential elections have taught us anything, it is that many men do not really see themselves aligned with the values and ideals of the Democratic party. Men are currently dying 5.9 years earlier than women, are only 40% of college students, and represent 75% of the unhoused population. They are struggling on the whole and Democrats rarely decide to dive into that crisis as a talking point. Author and data analyst Mark Sutton talks with Brad about why that is happening, and what can be changed to bring men back into the fold for the Democratic Party. Ennis Retailer Says Businesses "Fighting To Stay Alive" On Black Friday

An Ennis retailer insists businesses wouldn't need Black Friday if they received adequate Government support. As shops across the country are unveiling their seasonal discounts today, many smaller traders are taking a different approach. Once confined to the US, Black Friday is now very much a part of Irish retail culture. Falling on the Friday after the US holiday of Thanksgiving, the day marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and is usually characterised by sales and reductions in shops, both in-person and online. Eric Flynn of Ennis Electrical says the day is a major consideration for his business as they prepare for the winter months. Since its arrival in Ireland, smaller traders haven't been shy in expressing their dislike of Black Friday, claiming it's more difficult for them to slash their prices, given the margin they're forced to work with. Freya's Boutique in Ennis doesn't operate a Black Friday sale, but instead offers reductions to its loyal customers throughout the year. Its owner, Monica Keane says her shop is dependent on its strong links with its customer base. It's often argued that days like Black Friday unfairly force smaller businesses to compete with larger ones with a greater ability to offer generous discounts. Bernadette Clune of Scéal Eile Books in Ennis says in her experience, the people of Clare are only too happy to support local. The rising cost of doing business has been a key issue of the General Election campaign. The standard rate of VAT is 23% at present, and Mark Sutton of Sutton's Lighting is arguing that if retailers were properly supported by the State, they wouldn't have to depend on flash sale days like Black Friday.

How Democrats Lost The 2024 Presidential Election By Alienating Men Driving Them To Trump https://amzn.to/46cj7NT About the Guest(s): Mark W. Sutton is a recognized expert in political analysis and voter behavior with a particular focus on male voters. He has dedicated over 35 years to advocating for male wellbeing and has been a registered Democrat, contributing content to prominent platforms like NPR, Air America Radio, and the Mother Jones Radio Show. Sutton is an advocate for male issues and has hosted the podcast "Liberal Arts with Mark Sutton." He has appeared on major media outlets such as MSNBC and CBS Radio, further cementing his status as a thought leader in gender-focused political strategy. He is the author of "How Democrats Can Win Back Men: Why Understanding Voters and Their Issues is Vital for Democrat Victory." Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of The Chris Voss Show, Chris Voss talks with Mark W. Sutton, the insightful author of "How Democrats Can Win Back Men," as they examine the aftermath of a significant electoral defeat for the Democratic Party. The conversation delves into the critical gender voting gap that has emerged over the decades and focuses on how men have increasingly shifted their political support towards the Republican Party. With provocative insights and a wealth of historical data, Sutton sheds light on the unaddressed needs of male voters and how the Democrats' failure to recognize these issues led to their recent electoral losses. Throughout the episode, Sutton and Voss explore the complex dynamics of voter behavior, examining how messaging and policy approaches have disconnected many men from the Democratic Party. As Sutton presents his compelling analysis, he emphasizes the necessity for the party to understand and address male concerns to regain their support. The conversation also touches upon cultural phenomena such as the masculinity movement and societal narratives that have further polarized gender roles and party allegiance. Sutton leaves the audience with a critical message on the importance of inclusivity and the dangers that lie in ignoring half the electorate. Key Takeaways: The Democratic Party's failure to acknowledge and address male voter issues has led to a significant gender gap in voting patterns. Historical data shows that whenever Democrats fare worse than an 8% deficit among male voters, they lose elections. Sutton criticizes the Democratic Party for its messaging failures and lack of focus on male issues in platforms and policies. The conversation highlights the cultural divide exacerbating political differences between genders, driven by societal shifts and misinformation. Acknowledging and incorporating male-focused policies can be essential for democratic victories in future elections. Notable Quotes: "Every time they have been worse than minus 8% among men, they have lost." – Mark W. Sutton "Men and women's fates are always tied together, biologically and socially." – Mark W. Sutton "The imaging part and the messaging part are where the Democrats fell short this election." – Mark W. Sutton "We're tied together as men and women, and our success depends on unity, not division." – Chris Voss "If men are like, wow, there's not enough jobs for me, they feel like they're being discriminated against." – Mark W. South Wales is building back from the pandemic with a raft of industrial start-ups and with leisure operators keen to fill vacant space on the high street, believes Fletcher Morgan associate Matthew Jones. Fletcher Morgan is the highest placed regional independent agency in the Radius On Demand Rankings for South Wales with 338,699 sq ft of space transacted across 40 deals so far this year. Jones, meanwhile, has done the third most individual deals (22) for the whole of Wales, with only Knight Frank's Neil Francis and Mark Sutton having done more. Jones says the office market has been the toughest in living memory but is starting to spring back to life, albeit with occupiers less interested in conventional leases. Small industrial units, meanwhile, are selling in their droves to local occupiers and the industrial estates of South Wales are now high on the priority lists of investment funds. Meanwhile, a variety of leisure occupiers are setting up in the high street, helped by the fact some 20% of the population of Cardiff are students.

Improv Comedy Connection

Listen in to a fire side chat with Joe Bill -- widely regarded as one of the best teachers of Scenic and Comedic Improvisation in the world today. He is one of the founding members of Annoyance Theater Chicago where, for 12 years, he performed in and/or directed more than 60 different shows. He was the Director of Corporate Training at iO Chicago for 15 years and a Teacher & Guest Artist in Residence at The Second City Conservatory & Training Center for another 15 years. Joe first learned Improvisation and in 1977 studied and worked with Del Close from 1985 through the mid 90’s. Joe is ½ of the original improvised Monoscene, BASSPROV with Mark Sutton, . They have been heralded by the NY TIMES: "BASSPROV refreshingly has the feel of a quiet character study...jokes emerge organically, using wordplay, character quirks and quicksilver wit." Joe tours all over the world, teaching and headlining with extremely talented Duo partners like Mark Sutton (Annoyance Theater Co-Founding Member and Artistic Director for Training and Development at The Second City) in the long-running BASSPROV, Jill Bernard (Huge Improv Theater – Mpls.) in their hit show SCRAM!, with Lee White (CRUMBS – Winnipeg, Berlin) in their heroic Duo show PARADIGM, with International Improv Legend Patti Stiles (AD - Impro Melbourne) in their groundbreaking show Our Play, Stacey Hallal (Curious Comedy Theater – Portland, OR) in Stacey & Joe and We Slept Together, Heather Urquhart (Improviser/Director The Maydays & Showstopper The Improvised Musical – London/U.K.) in their magical improvised Musical Blues Hammer (with the stupendous Joe Samuel on Improvised Orchestra) and with David Razowsky (Host A.D.D. Comedy Podcast) in Razowsky & Bill. He’s played with many other Duo partners, in the U.S. and abroad, in many Festival Ensemble shows and in every improvised format and/or style imaginable. For the last 6 years he has also been teaching and performing in French, in many cities in France, Belgium & Luxembourg. He is living his dream! He has played as a guest in Play Unscripted with ImproTheatre L.A., Grand Theft Impro at Impro Melbourne (Australia), The Scene at The PIT in New York City and UCB in L.A., with Let’s Have A Ball and ASSSSCAT 3000 at UCB Theater in New York & L.A. and with Kornfeld & Andrews at Magnet Theater in New York City. And, of course, he has performed, directed, taught and served as an Artistic Adviser for a number of Improvisation/Comedy Theaters & Festivals on every continent except Antarctica (but he’s working on that!) and at every major Improv Festival in The United States. You can find Joe on facebook at Joe Bill Teaches! | Facebook, which is also the best place to get connected with the Story Chain sessions that Joe hosts.

Jeff has a conversation with improv heavyweight Mark Sutton. Mark is a Chicago-based performer, instructor and director. He's maybe most notable for his co-founding of the Annoyance Theatre. In addition to this, Mark is the Learning Designer and Lead Facilitator of Second City Chicago and had spent several years as the Artistic Director for the Chicago Improv Festival.  On the discussion table are the origins of the Annoyance Theatre (including its namesake), Bassprov (his partnership with Joe Bill), and a rundown the Chicago scene and how it shaped Mark as a performer.

Hi and welcome to what I hope is the first of many episodes! I'm your host Lauren Morris. I am also the founder and director of AdLib Theatre. Just like with the Improv Teachers podcast, I wanted to take a closer look into the world of artistic directors. What do we look for when performers take to the stage? How can we give clear notes? What goes on behind the scenes? These are some of the questions we will be examining in these short episodes. Every week or so, I will give you a recap of our show, what the expectation was, how it turned out, and some tips and tricks on bringing your improv to life on stage! I hope you enjoy this new experiment and I look forward to this adventure with you. About Me (Lauren Morris): Lauren Morris is the founder and director of AdLib Theatre Company as well as the Executive Producer for the Central Florida Improv Festival. Lauren studied improv at The Annoyance Theatre & Bar with Mick Napier and with Paul Vaillancourt (co-Founder of iO West) at iO West. She has taken workshops and classes with such improv notables as Kevin Mullaney, Jill Bernard, Rebecca and Rich Sohn, Adal Rifai, Susan Messing, and Mark Sutton and members of the UCB Theater in New York City. Lauren hosts The Improv Teachers (winner of Best of Improv Podcasts, 2017, PlayerFM). A podcast dedicated to discussing the art of teaching improv. Additionally, she is a veteran of numerous improv festivals where she has been invited to perform and teach. As a writer, Lauren has been featured in publications such as Weekly Humorist, Slackjaw, Belladonna, MockMom, Points in Case, and Robot Butt. She honed her satire skills via Second City.
