The Brotherhood of Archery and the Pursuit of Perfection Jeff and Skip's conversation isn't just about bows—it's about a way of life. They kick things off with the chaos of the Iowa Deer Classic, a show that's become a pilgrimage for hunters and gearheads alike. Skip reminisces about the early days, long before GearHead Archery became a name known worldwide, back when he was just a guy with a love for bows and a knack for building something different. The talk weaves through stories of monster bucks, hunting traditions, and the economics of non-resident tags. They touch on the way states manage wildlife, comparing Wisconsin's low-cost, high-pressure system to the well-maintained draw structures of places like Iowa and Arizona. The point is clear—conservation and access don't always go hand in hand, but they should. Skip gets philosophical about GearHead's 10-year journey, reflecting on the relationships that make the industry worthwhile. He's not in this for a quick sale—he's in it to build bows that last a lifetime, to create a community that feels like family. It's a far cry from the corporate buyouts and profit-chasing that have diluted the heart of archery. He shares stories of going the extra mile for hunters—driving through the night to replace a crossbow for a guy in Iowa, handing over a brand-new bow to a customer who had his derailed at a pro shop. These aren't just good business decisions; they're what make the archery world feel like home. They wrap up with thoughts on legacy. Skip doesn't plan to sell GearHead—he hopes it'll live on long after him, passed down like a well-worn bow that still shoots true. The world of archery is changing, but as long as there are people who believe in craftsmanship, community, and the thrill of the hunt, there'll always be a place for the kind of work he's doing. The conversation ends the way the best ones do—two guys who share a passion for bows, the outdoors, and the kind of life that's measured in memories, not just money.
The hunting Community is something special! We can all see this firsthand at events like the Iowa Deer Classic and I encourage you all to go to these types of events. We talk about this in today's episode, as well as the dense topic of bears - attack stories, what is the best defense strategy, and conservation/learning about the species. Ultimately, creativity and collective efforts are what move us forward the most and that is what we hope you get out of this week's episode! Have a blessed week! On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Skip and Dan break down his annual habitat management strategy. Dan and Larry McCoy live from the Iowa Deer Classic with plenty of guests and more!
In this week's [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we dial-in with Dan Johnson from Sportsmen's Empire. We kick things off by testing the tea bag coffee from Wildland Coffee and get into a chat about the various podcast styles and why we settled on the format that we did for this show. We've been friends with Dan for a while now; we like what he is doing and he likes what we are doing, so we decided to join forces–see what that's going to look like moving forward. Is there another GoWild podcast in the works? Dan questions what it really means to be an “expert” at something. He asks Brayden about his journey into becoming a fly angler and Brayden mentions his easiest and hardest parts of transitioning from bass fishing to fly fishing. Dan also talks about the challenge of having interviewed over 1,000 podcast guests and shares his experience from the recent Iowa Deer Classic tradeshow and what makes it one of the best. He recounts his glory days as a whitetail antler shed hunter and drops a bombshell bone-finding tip. He also gives us his no-fail, dummy-proof longbeard-flopping guide to killing turkeys. Brayden set up his new rod and reel and is gearing up for a fly fishing trip with several GoWild members. He started with the Orvis Encounter rod/reel combo but is now scaling up to a DIY setup. Jacob paid off some of his marital debt to be able to join them on the trip! He also mentions his favorite flies to use this time of year. Brad celebrated his daughter's birthday and spent the weekend elbow deep in unicorns and rainbows. Dan mentioned how he got his young daughter a cell phone–and why he instantly regretted it! We've got several parents on the show today and get into the strangest, craziest, and wildest things our kids are saying and doing. Aside from these normal antics, what can we do as parents to help them with survival skills and other important life lessons? Don't forget about the UTV giveaway: Learn more and enter now and let us know how you like this new podcast format with Dan. After one week off to prepare and head to the Iowa Deer Classic, Greg and Eric found themselves without a meaningful topic and resorted to chatting about the Cocaine Bear, trail cams, and a world where bucks don't have antlers. Chris Dyer is the greatest deer hunter you've never heard of. Go ahead argue with me. I'll send you picture after picture, and story after story to prove my claim. The man lives and breathes whitetails. During the hunting season you can count on Chris to tag multiple bucks, and during shed season he will have the biggest shed pile because of quantity and quality of sheds he scoops up. In this episode though he lays down some great info on how to find more matches while shed hunting. And this is perfect timing because he just won 2nd place for biggest matched set of antlers at the Iowa Deer Classic. This week on the Missouri Woods and Water podcast the guys get to talk with Zach Mixer about an awesome 2021 giant whitetail. We were lucky enough to meet Zach up at the Iowa Deer Classic and hear part of the awesome story about an unlikely Iowa giant. Zach gained access to a new piece of property last season which is always a nice surprise, but little did he know a 210" beast was living there. A season of crazy ups and downs ended with the highest high a guy can ask for when he was able to put an arrow in a world class deer. It was great to meet Zach and his family in Iowa and even better hearing this full story. We want to thank Zach for hopping on with us and for his service to his community as well.
