Daily Quotes Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 206 features an interview with Maciek Nieścioruk of Dormant Ordeal. If you're looking for an example of how Polish death metal continues to evolve, I submit Krakow's Dormant Ordeal. The long-running trio don't scrimp on the speed or blastbeats that their scene is known for, but include plenty of discordance and eerie riffing that plants their sound in the new millenium. I spoke with Dormant Ordeal guitarist/bassist/lyricist Maciek Nieścioruk about how the band went from drummer Radek's bedroom project to a full band, and how classical music informs his musical arrangements. We also talked about the writing and recording of Dormant Ordeal's latest album, The Grand Scheme Of Things, and the stories behind some of their enigmatic song titles. My thanks to Maciek for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Music In This Episode: "Stoning" taken from the album We Had It Coming "Your Mother-Slave" taken from the album It Rains, It Pours "Poetry Doesn't Work on Whores" "The Borders of Our Language Are Not The Borders of Our World" taken from the album The Grand Scheme Of Things Thanks for listening! The Director's Club wanted to do something special on what would have been legendary director Ingmar Bergman's 101st year, so we're putting together a three-part series we're calling Bergman 101, where we look at every full feature he made that had a theatrical release! In Part I, we see how he made his start with melodramas but soon branched out to an astounding variety of films (like a film noir and a screwball comedy!), until he took his career to new artistic and public recognition with "Smiles of a Summer Night". We look at the remarkable elements in these early works (including silent film segments, dream sequences, innovative montages, animation, and a stuffed cat), plus the themes and techniques that would coalesce in forming the amazing films to come! [7:31] "Crisis" ("Big City Nights", The Scorpions) [21:21] "It Rains on Our Love" ("Our House", Madness) [38:06] "A Ship to India" (Papa was a Rolling Stone", The Temptations) [49:23] "Music in Darkness" ("Blind", Talking Heads) [55:55] "Port of Call" ("A Mistake", Fiona Apple) [1:05:22] "Prison" ("Flagpole Sitta", Harvey Danger) [1:17:42] "Thirst" ("Bring Me Some Water", Melissa Etheridge) [1:23:47] "To Joy" ("Ode to Joy", Ludwig van Beethoven) [1:36:30] "This Can't Happen Here" ("Spies Like Us", Paul McCartney) [1:54:45] "Summer Interlude" ("Suddenly Last Summer", The Motels) [2:07:41] "The Waiting Women", (The Waiting", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) [2:19:45] "Summer with Monika" ("Girl", Beck) [2:40:28] "Sawdust and Tinsel" ("Death of a Clown", The Kinks) [2:56:33] "A Lesson in Love" ("Money, Money, Money", ABBA) [3:07:01] "Dreams" ("Didn't It Rain", Songs: Ohia) [3:14:00] "Smiles of a Summer Night" ("Magic Potion", Lou Johnson)

Welcome to AskALLi, the self-publishing advice broadcast from the Alliance of Independent Authors. This week it's our monthly IndieVoices' self-publishing salon with interviews conducted by ALLi Managing Editor Howard Lovy and updates from News Editor Dan Holloway. This Month's IndieVoices I’m about to say something with which just about every other person in the publishing industry will disagree. In fact, most will strongly, passionately, with much snooty sarcasm, disagree with what I’m about to say. Ready for it? Everybody has a memoir in them. Not only that, but everybody should write one. There, I said it. Every life is unique, and everybody has a story that only they can tell. As a journalist, what I enjoy most is getting people's stories in their own words. As a book editor, I can help them tell it in a way that brings out their own voice, that will invite others to relive their unique lives with them. With the rise of self-publishing, authors don't need to put up with rejection by acquiring editors who decide whether anybody cares about your story. Just write it. Oh, and hire a good editor to help you tell it. That's all. I'm Howard Lovy, managing editor at the Alliance of Independent Authors, and I'm focusing this episode of IndieVoices on memoir. I'd first like you to meet Indie author Leila Summers of South Africa, who self-published a memoir called It Rains in February, about a very personal, painful topic that she made universal. Also in this episode, ALLi News Editor Dan Holloway updates us on a self-published author who is winning awards in France (and a resultant uproar because he published it on Amazon's CreateSpace), what Amazon Storefront means for indie authors, and an update on European copyright law. Find more author advice, tips and tools at our Self-publishing Author Advice Center: https://selfpublishingadvice.org, with a huge archive of nearly 2,000 blog posts, and a handy search box to find key info on the topic you need. And, if you haven’t already, we invite you to join our organization and become a self-publishing ally. You can do that at http://allianceindependentauthors.org. Now, go write and publish! About the Hosts Howard Lovy has been a journalist for more than 30 years, and has spent the last five years amplifying the voices of independent publishers and authors. He works with authors as a "book doctor" to prepare their work to be published. Howard is also a freelance business and technology writer, and is launching a new Jewish-themed podcast on Patreon. Find Howard on LinkedIn and Twitter. Dan Holloway is a novelist, poet and spoken word artist. He is the MC of the performance arts show The New Libertines Earlier this year he competed at the National Poetry Slam final at the Royal Albert Hall. His latest collection, The Transparency of Sutures, is available on Kindle
