Oku ke fefe hake? Today, travel medicine specialist Dr. Chris Sanford talks with emergency medicine physician and toxicologist Dr. Richard Clark about things that bite and sting! Questions include:Where in the US is the risk highest for black widow bites? What activities would put someone at elevated risk for a spider bite?Let's talk about scorpions. Scorpions scare the hell out of me. I'm told that the stings are incredibly painful. In the world, and in the US, where are these a threat?Let's talk about bees. Are they a worldwide issue? After a bee sting, how many folks will develop symptoms affecting the entire body?If someone has had severe symptoms in response to a bee sting—such as swelling, or trouble breathing—how should they prepare for potential future stings? How much time does someone have, with a severe reaction, before they reach an emergency room?In the US do you need a doctor's rx for an epi-pen?How often should it be replaced? How do beekeepers avoid getting bee stings, and developing allergies to bees?Where do people need to be concerned about venomous ants. What can someone do to reduce the risk of ant stings? After an ant sting, what's the best in-the-field treatment?Should we all be like Indiana Jones and avoid all snakes? Where in the world do we need to be concerned about poisonout snakes? There's a little poem that purports to describe the risk of being bitten by a coral snake, it goes Red on yellow, kill a fellow; red on black, friend of Jack (or "venom lack"). Is that accurate?Suppose someone is hiking in rattlesnake county, and a rattlesnake bites them. What can they do prior to reaching an emergency room? (And what about the cowboy "cut and suck" approach?)Is there benefit—potential protection—by wearing thick boots? And, with a hiking pole, what can I do with leaves, or other stuff on the trail, if anythingHow fast is a snake's striking speed? And how far can they strike?Sometimes people ask me if they should carry antivenom with them? Is that realistic? In the US, how many people are killed by snakes each year?We hope you enjoy this podcast! Billy Bob Thornton returns to share fascinating tales from his six-year residency at LA's iconic Sunset Marquis Hotel, featured in the new documentary 'If These Walls Could Rock.' He recounts wild encounters with neighbors like Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, and Richard Harris, plus some pretty outrageous moments on the property. Billy Bob also discusses The Boxmasters' 21st album and their incredible experience opening for The Who, where they earned standing ovations. After that, Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner sits down for a wide-ranging conversation about the band's upcoming double album MPLS Unplugged. Dave opens up about being a self-described technophobe who just recently got an iPhone, the story behind Prince covering 'Stand Up and Be Strong,' and how the new acoustic record differs from their MTV Unplugged performance 30 years ago. They dive into Dave's songwriting process, which songs work acoustically versus electrically, and the incredible impact of 'Runaway Train' on both missing children and mental health awareness. Rounding out the podcast, Mikkey Dee joins for an in-depth conversation covering his terrifying health scare with sepsis that led to three surgeries and five weeks in the hospital. The Scorpions and former Motorhead drummer explains how the aggressive infection nearly took his right leg and his life. He discusses the formation of Lex Legion, reuniting four-fifths of a classic King Diamond lineup to create old-school metal with a modern twist. Mikkey also talks about Scorpions' continued vitality (despite the band members approaching 80), their upcoming Vegas residency, and why he's now the last man standing to carry Motorhead's torch forward.  Catch Eddie Trunk every M-F from 3:00-5:00pm ET on Trunk Nation on SiriusXM Faction Talk Channel 103.And don't forget to follow Eddie on X, Instagram & TikTok!Follow the link to get your free 3-month trial of SiriusXM: http://siriusxm.com/eddietrunk Find all episodes of Trunk Nation: https://siriusxm.com/trunknation Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Strange Animals Podcast

Megarachne as we know it now: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. Megarachne is only known from two specimens, neither of which is complete, which adds to the confusion. It lived around 300 million years ago in what is now South America. It was described in 1980 from the first specimen discovered and was named Megarachne, which means big spider. The scientist who described it thought it was a type of primitive spider related to modern tarantulas, but much bigger. He estimated its legspan was 20 inches, or 50 cm, with a body length of just over 13 inches, or 34 cm. That made it the largest spider ever known by a lot. Other palaeontologists, especially arachnologists who specialize in spiders and their relations, weren't convinced Megarachne was a spider. But it wasn't until 2005 when a more complete specimen was discovered that anyone could say for sure what it was. The second specimen made it clear that it wasn't a spider at all but a sea scorpion, or eurypterid, and not an especially large one compared to some. It probably grew to 21 inches long, or 54 cm. But by then, Megarachne had gotten really popular as a giant spider. It was in the BBC documentary Walking with Monsters, although the producers changed its name to Mesothelae right before it aired, which was just after the new findings about Megarachne came out. Mesothelae is a suborder of big spiders from parts of Asia that retain many traits of ancestral spiders. It was a valiant attempt by the BBC to make the documentary less incorrect, but of course the spider they were talking about still wasn't a spider and no spider known has ever grown that large. But while Megarachne isn't a giant spider, and isn't even a very big eurypterid, it is important since not very many eurypterids are known from South America. It also appears to be closely related to Mycterops and Woodwardopterus, similar-looking euripterids from North America and Europe. But some researchers think it's not as cut and dried as it sounds. Instead of three similar creatures living in different areas, they think there's something else going on. Eurypterids were arthropods, the phylum that includes insects, arachnids, and crustaceans, among others. Arthropods have an exoskeleton that they molt periodically as they grow, and many arthropods have complicated life stages compared to other animals. When a shark hatches, it looks like a miniature adult and just grows larger as it gets older, but when an arthropod hatches, it usually doesn't look anything like its adult form. Some arthropods go through many stages of life before reaching the adult body plan. Crustaceans have numerous larval stages, for instance, that often look very different from the adult. Some researchers think that Megarachne, Mycterops, and Woodwardopterus were all the same animal, and that the differences are due to it being in three different stages of development when it died and was preserved. We don't have any way to know if this was correct, of course, not until we hopefully find more fossil remains. Other eurypterids did appear to go through some physical changes during maturation, as far as researchers can tell with the remains we have, but Megarachne, Mycterops, and Woodwardopterus belonged to a different family from other eurypterids and are much rarer. They might have been quite different developmentally. We can also look at the living relations to see how likely it is that eurypterids had different larval stages where they looked different from the adult form. Eurypterids were probably most closely related to horseshoe crabs, although not everyone agrees. Horseshoe crabs have been around for 445 million years and are really neat animals that we're lucky to still have in the world. The horseshoe crab hatches into a larva that looks a lot like a trilobite. It does indeed go through physical changes as it grows and molts over the course of three years, so it's reasonable to assume that eurypterids did too. On the other hand, some researchers think eurypterids were more closely related to modern scorpions. Scorpions actually give birth to live babies instead of laying eggs, and the female carries the babies on her back for several days up to several weeks, depending on the species. Once the babies have their first molt they look a lot more like miniature adults and pretty soon are able to leave their mother and hunt on their own. So again, it's possible that eurypterids had a system more like this instead of like the horseshoe crab's. While we're talking about scorpions, did you know that scorpions glow blue-green in ultraviolet light? The scorpion's exoskeleton contains fluorescent chemicals, but we're not sure why. Scorpions do have incredibly light sensitive eyes, and can navigate at night using only starlight. Their eyes can't form sharp images like ours can, though. And scorpions have a lot of eyes. Spiders have four pairs of eyes, but some scorpions have more than that. All species have a pair on top of the cephalothorax, which corresponds to the head, and more on the sides of the cephalothorax. Some species have up to five pairs of eyes in addition to the ones on top of the head. Twelve eyes seems like overkill but it works for the scorpion. Eurypterids had both compound eyes and simple eyes. That's all we know about Megarachne right now, at least until we find more fossilized specimens. Let's hope we do, and while we're at it, let's hope we find some more fossilized giant spiders because that would be cool. Thanks for your support, and thanks for listening!

That was the day Nirvana's Nevermind hit record-store shelves (remember those?). Before then, the world was inundated with diva pop from Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul, the embers of pop metal from the Scorpions, Skid Row and Guns N' Roses, a ton of mostly awful R&B slow jams, novelty hits from folks like Gerardo and MC Hammer and some actually great stuff from R.E.M., Gang Starr, My Bloody Valentine, Metallica, INXS, Londonbeat and others. 1976 was supposed to belong to disco, soft rock, and singer‑songwriters. Yet in the shadows of “Disco Lady,” “A Fifth of Beethoven,” and “Silly Love Songs,” guitar bands were quietly rebuilding what hard rock and metal could be. Boston's basement‑crafted debut exploded onto Epic Records, Thin Lizzy dropped Jailbreak and Johnny the Fox in the same year, and Judas Priest, Scorpions, Rainbow, and Rush started sketching out the next decade of heavy music. In this roundtable, we go deep into the albums of 1976 that still matter for 70s and 80s metal and hard rock. We talk Kiss' double‑punch of Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over, the strange transitional energy of Zeppelin's Presence and Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy, and the way Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Blondie cracked open a punk and new wave future while classic rock giants were already burning out.If you love Boston, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, or any corner where 70s hard rock collides with early punk and European deep cuts, this episode is for you.Highlights:• 02:30: Billboard's 1976 snapshot vs the albums we care about• 12:10: The accidental birth of Johnny the Fox• 24:10: Kiss in hi‑gloss and raw form, in one year• 29:20: Gasolin' and Solid Ground, Scandinavian heaviness in 1976Subscribe to Dig Me Out at digmeoutpodcast.com | Join the community at dmounion.com This is a public episode. Vance sits down with data engineer Rob Long — self-described as scoring near zero on the agreeableness scale — to dig into what professional AI use actually looks like. Rob walks through his work at Bayer building "Sales Companion," an iOS app that lets sales agronomists dump field notes, photos, and voice memos after customer visits, then uses an AI agronomy agent to surface product recommendations and flag crop disease issues the salesperson might have missed. It's a grounded, unglamorous look at how enterprise AI actually gets built and deployed. The conversation ranges widely, from the local optima problem (why hill-climbing strategies trap you on foothills instead of mountains) to how AI has turbocharged both of their understanding of history — Greek empires, Byzantine splits, the hard fork of the Protestant Reformation. Rob also makes a sharp case that English is simply the next layer of abstraction above high-level programming languages, the same way C replaced assembly — and that most "software engineers" are quietly becoming software engineering leads managing agents instead of writing code.As Bitcoin joins the conversation, Rob explains that his view is simple — figure out how to get paid in it, and stack what you can. He and Vance also trade takes on AI surveillance fears, driverless cars, the cost of keeping underperforming employees, and the surprisingly good lesson hiding inside every embarrassing work story.https://Articulate.Ventures/IBC/https://LegacyInterviews.com/

It was great to connect with the legendary Mikkey Dee. This guy has been the backbeat of bands from King Diamond to Don Dokken, to Motorhead, to the Scorpions. Now you can add his latest band, Lex Legion, to that list. Made up of guys he played with in King Diamond's band, Andy LaRocque, Pete Blakk, and Hal Patino, then throw in vocalist Nils K. Rue, and you've got a band that delivers heavy-hitting, old-school rock/metal.The Motorhead YearsWe talked about his time in Motorhead, which lasted 25 years. He said if Lemmy were still alive, he'd still be in that band. He compared it to a tight family unit. He also said Lem was the kind of guy to stick to his guns. "And as frustrating as that was sometimes, because he did not know everything best, you know? We were a total democracy in this band. We voted him down many times, me and Phil. I was maybe a little bit more involved with the business as well. You know, they, we all made decisions. That's, that's now where I'm trying to get, get out. But I'm actually interested in numbers and, and, you know, the business side of it. And they were just like more, oh, what the hell, you deal with it, kind of." Mikkey went on, "You know, and he, he made me look in a different angle about it. And, he was right, you know, a lot of times about this, not compromising the band or selling out. And, you know, I learned a lot from him there."Lex LegionThe new self-titled album drops on June 12th. It's short, clocking in at around 35 minutes. Mikkey said they did that so the vinyl release wouldn't sound too compressed. It consists of 9 songs.Mikkey said he enjoyed making this album. "A hundred percent, you know, because a lot of people, rightfully so, compare us now to the old Diamond Records that we did. But that's how we wrote music those days. And we continue writing this way. We are probably a nightmare for a more regular producer who will tear his or her hair off. Because why is this part over here? Why are you doing a double solo there? Or why do you have guitar harmonies after there? And it doesn't make any sense. But that's how we wrote those days. And that's the whole point of this, you know. We continue doing this on this record. It's not just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, verse, double chorus ending."He did tell me that they're already working on the next record! "We're riffing away already. And as I said, I'll be very busy with Scorpions at least up till October. The last thing we do, as far as I know right now, is the residency in Vegas."Playing With The ScorpionsMikkey has been in the Scorpions for the better part of ten years now. They have an upcoming residency in Las Vegas coming up again this fall. "We love it. And we have so many friends in Vegas. And what a great city. Great people. Great venue." As far as the setlist for that band is concerned, he said it's close to last years celbration of the band's 60th anniversary. "But this year is an extension of last year's 60th anniversary show. And it's really, really good. I mean, we have a great 70s medley in there. And the set works really fine. Because I was asking the guys before we actually started this year, what are we going to take out? What are we going to add about rehearsal and stuff? And they said they want us to continue doing the 60th anniversary show. And it's great!"The new Lex Legion record drops on June 12th. Filmmaker Dave Markey discusses his documentary "The Secret Lives of Bill Bartell", the punk scene's most fascinating, mysterious, and surprisingly influential behind-the-scenes figure. Stream it now  |  Order the Blu-Ray Topics Include: Dave Markey has a large record collection but stopped buying recently. Vinyl prices have skyrocketed — once cheap records now cost thousands. Dave bought records directly from band members at punk shows. Ian MacKaye sold Dave a first press Minor Threat 7". Dave bought Minutemen and Descendents EPs from D-Boon for a dollar. Dave made the Bill Bartell documentary for people who don't know him. Bill Bartell was unknowable — different things to different people. Dave tried making this film in the 90s; Bill refused to cooperate. The film was made ten years after Bill passed away. Bill Bartell faked backstage passes to get into arena rock shows. Bill named the Iron Maiden live EP Maiden Japan. Bill gave Steve Harris his outfit, worn in the "Run to the Hills" video. Bill saw no distinction between the Scorpions, the Germs, and the Beatles. Bill would tell artists exactly what he thought — no filter whatsoever. Bill told Steve Perry he was responsible for the worst night of his life. Bill told Beck "I don't like you" upon their very first meeting. Bill tried out as guitarist for Public Image Ltd in 1981. Kiss circulated photos of Bill to security: do not let him in. Bill befriended Sean Lennon, which led to a friendship with Yoko Ono. Bill's 1988 Beatlefest noise performance nearly caused a riot. Bill talked Kiss manager Bill Aucoin into discovering Generation X. That connection indirectly launched Billy Idol's massive solo career. Billy Idol himself didn't know Bill Bartell's role until recently. Bill gave Kurt Cobain Os Mutantes tapes, reviving the band's career. Pat Smear and Drew Barrymore were sought for the film but unavailable. Dave's band Painted Willie did Black Flag's final tour in 1986. Dave preferred Painted Willie's early Spinhead Records releases over SST output. The Bill Bartell documentary and Love Dolls films are now on Criterion Channel. Bill Bartell's Flying V guitar now hangs in the Punk Rock Museum, Las Vegas. Bill's money, connections, and secrets largely died with him — still a mystery.
