Together with Jimi Hendrix's sister, Janie Hendrix and legendary engineer Eddie Kramer, McDermott has co-produced every Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD release, including 1999's Grammy Award-winning Band Of Gypsys, 2014's Emmy Award-winning Hear My Train A Comin' and the recent Grammy nominated Music, Money, Madness: Jimi Hendrix In Maui. John & Maggie discuss his latest project is Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision the new feature-length documentary film chronicling the creation of Electric Lady Studios (directed by John) Rising from the rubble of a bankrupt, Greenwich Village nightclub to the state of the art recording facility inspired by Jimi Hendrix's vision and becoming the first ever, artist owned commercial recording studio. Contained on the five vinyl LPs or three CDs in the Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision box set are 39 tracks recorded by Jimi and his band—consisting of bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell—at the studio within the last four months of the guitarist's life. Hendrix was hard at work creating First Rays Of The New Rising Sun, the ambitious double album that would follow his 1968 masterwork Electric Ladyland. Inspired by the possibilities of the new studio, the Experience built classic fare such as “Night Bird Flying,” “Freedom,” and “Dolly Dagger” from the ground up. The set offers a comprehensive look at the work Hendrix undertook during that fruitful summer of 1970Source: https://ajimihendrixvision.com/Source: https://www.sonymusic.com/legacy/documentary-box-set-electric-lady-studios-a-jimi-hendrix-vision/Source: https://www.jimihendrix.com/music/electric-lady-studios-a-jimi-hendrix-vision/Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. Today, I been anticipating talking about the Titan Comics Sci-Fi Graphic Novel inspired by the life of Jimi Hendrix-Purple Haze. My Guest DJ Ben Ha Meen, show writer for American Gods as well as Co-Host of one of my favorite podcast For All Nerds with Tatiana King. Ben partners in writing this project with Mellow Brown another masterful writer authoring the Blade runner series for Titan Comics. Ben and Mellow detail moments in Jimi's life that you know and some you want to grow to learn typically why the book is depicted as a space opera due to Jimi's love of Pulp Space Novels. With the assist and approval of Jimi's sister Janie Hendrix, Ben weaves us through the story of Jimi's forming of the Band of Gypsies, his opposition of the war, the bridges he created not only in hip hop but all music. We speak on the writers use of Gimmicks in popular artists especially when their music has a message. Overall, you see an exploration of a Black musician who changed the boundaries of Music in all genres.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-faqs-project-hosted-by-james-grandmaster-faqs-boyce/donations
Experience Hendrix & Legacy Recordings released Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967. This live concert performance was captured just five days before the US release of Are You Experienced, their album debut. Amazingly, not a single second of this two-track live recording has ever been released before in any capacity, either via official channels or otherwise.During their set, The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding) blazed through originals such as “Purple Haze,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” and yet-to-be-released classics “Foxey Lady” and “Fire,” as well as their own re-imagining of favorites Bob Dylan (“Like a Rolling Stone”), The Troggs (“Wild Thing”) and Muddy Waters (“Catfish Blues”). Having already conquered the band's UK base as well as Continental Europe over the previous ten months, the vast majority of the 17,000 plus Los Angeles concert goers were there to see headliners The Mamas & The Papas and were caught off guard by Jimi Hendrix's electrifying musicality and showmanship.John McDermott is the director, writer and producer who has long been associated with the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Janie Hendrix, the sister of the legendary musician Jimi Hendrix. And let me tell you, if you thought Zoom interviews were tough, try conducting one with a connection that keeps dropping like a rollercoaster. This was one of the shortest interviews I've had, and it's not because Janie wasn't a great interviewee - trust me, she was fantastic - it's just that the connection kept breaking and it was a tedious task to try to go in depth. Listening to the interview now, it seems all over the place, but hey, what are you gonna do? That's just the way it is. Despite the technical issues, it's still a fascinating glimpse into the short life of a genius guitar player. Janie shared with me her insights on Jimi's life and career, including her own experiences seeing him perform and the process of putting together a book on his life. We talked about the book, which is a coffee table affair featuring high quality reproductions of pictures and other memorabilia from Jimi's life and career. It includes rare and previously unseen material, like childhood drawings and handwritten lyrics, as well as stuff borrowed from collectors. The book chronicles Jimi's life and career in a comprehensive and chronological way, making it a must-have for any Hendrix fan or anyone interested in music history. It's a high quality product, with a heavy weight and beautiful reproductions of the pictures, and I have a feeling it's gonna be a hot item for collectors. We also talked about Johnny Hallyday, the French rock star, and I was really interested to discover in the book that Johnny had something to do with Jimi's rise to fame. As a French person myself, I was fascinated to learn that it was actually Johnny who first hired Jimi on a tour in Europe. And it was because of this tour that they built the Jimi Hendrix Experience band around him! Now, I'll be honest with you, I usually prefer in-person interviews because they allow for a deeper and more personal connection. But even though this interview was over Zoom and had all the technical finesse of a drunk giraffe, I have to say it was a real honor to speak with Janie on the occasion of her brother's 80th birthday. And let me tell you, this book she's releasing for the occasion is gonna be a must-have for any Hendrix fan. Don't sleep on it. Contact: www.hendrixmusicacademy.org Hendrix Family Non-Profit Being Sued by Experience Hendrix, LLC (Seattle, WA – November 16th, 2020) – Since 2009, Tina Hendrix, niece of Jimi Hendrix, has operated the Hendrix Music Academy (HMA) in order to bring musical education to the underserved youth of the Seattle community. Many of these kids grew up in the same impoverished neighborhoods as Jimi Hendrix. Now, in the midst of a global pandemic, the HMA is at risk of permanently being closed, but not due to Covid-19, but rather due to litigation, led by Janie Hendrix and Hendrix Experience, LLC. On September 18th – 20th, 2020, the HMA sponsored and organized a Free Public Memorial & Peace and Love event in Seattle’s Jimi Hendrix Park, to honor Jimi Hendrix, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of his untimely death. This event, even though it was a non-profit event and followed social distancing guidelines, was cited in the litigation as an infringement on Jimi Hendrix’s copyright. This couldn’t be further from the truth, as the Hendrix family was given the rights to use Jimi Hendrix’s name, by the late Al Hendrix, as long as it was for a charitable entity, of which the HMA qualifies. The HMA has spent over a decade providing valuable services to the underserved youth of Seattle and has survived through small donations. The HMA has provided all of these services without any costs to the youth participants or their families. This recent attack will potentially force the HMA to cease programming for children, who may not have any other access to music lessons or equipment. It would be a shame for this valuable institution to be extinguished due to petty and vindictive litigation, that only serves to punish Leon Hendrix, Jimi’s brother. This recent legal action by Experience LLC is not reflective of the man that Jimi Hendrix was. His 27 short years on this planet was full of charity and love for the underprivileged and the youth of the world, of which he was one during his formative years in Seattle. The Hendrix Music Academy calls for all fans of the great Jimi Hendrix to stand with us, as we fight this heavy-handed and extremely punitive lawsuit and fight for the right of the Seattle youth to have access to the gift of music, of which Jimi Hendrix could only dream about as a youth. For more information, please visit our website: www.hendrixmusicacademy.org ##### Update: On January 11, 2020 Judge Engelmeyer ruled against the Hendrix Music Academy in what we feel is an incorrect decision which further violates our first amendment rights. We plan to appeal this unfair and unjust ruling and continue to fight for our rights. I will say that we are devastated and disappointed about the judge’s decision and I strongly feel that it was incorrect and unjust for several reasons. Experience Hendrix only seeks to disenfranchise Jimi Hendrix’s next of kin from participating in his legacy at all costs, for no other purpose than corporate greed and to spread public misinformation that only they are Jimi’s family in reality they are not. Our small charity could not afford attorney representation during time when the pandemic has pushed us to the brink. I had to act pro se on behalf of our charity. Having legal counsel is critical to any successful legal battle. This battle is not about money but the right to use my own family birth given name for charitable purposes. This is more about free speech and our rights are being violated by this order and the order preceding this case which was a default judgment against my father. I am astonished that the courts have sided with Experience Hendrix and stripped us from our rights to use our own family surname after a lifetime of doing so. This is a rare occurrence. The plaintiff gained the Hendrix name by virtue of adoption. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/van-keeto2/support
