Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/rKoYL4yrNsgDespite being cited as one of the most creative and influential guitarists of all time, and his tragically short life, Jimi Hendrix's playing and composing are yet to be fully analysed. This lecture will demystify his diverse influences and reveal the full range of his extraordinary invention in terms of sonic sculpting, rhythmic feel, fretboard navigation, harmony, and composition. We explore this dazzling creativity from his early playing as a sideman to the Isley Brothers, the Experience albums, the iconic Band of Gypsys project, to the tantalising promise of his ‘Electric Church' musical vision. This lecture was recorded by Milton Mermikides on 20th March 2025 at Rich Mix, London.Milton Mermikides  is Gresham Professor of Music. He is Associate Professor in Music at the University of Surrey, Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music and Deputy Director of the International Guitar Research Centre. The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/just-ask-axis-jimi-hendrix-unpickedGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. ** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 15: Jara Harris, multi-instrumentalist founder of killer Los Angeles-based funk band SlapBak. First appearing on Randy Jackson's 1989 album Randy & the Gypsys, he founded SlapBak in 1990 and two years later delivered the debut LP, Fast Food Funkateers, which included guests Larry Blackmon of Cameo, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Since then, the band has performed relentlessly and released more than 10 albums. Speaking of which, as of this taping, SlapBak's latest project, Funk Lives Matter, was imminent and includes the booty-quaking single, “Hey Now.” Beyond that, don't miss the deep discussion of Harris' serious health scare and inspiring story of overcoming the odds to return back to studio and stage. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Send us a textCurtis and Aaron Vaughn came up with the idea for this podcast. The concept for this podcast is to give information and opinions about ten songs each month that may fly under the radar for most listeners of music. Also, we will play a snippet of each song and ask the listener to comment to us through one of our social media outlets so we can get different opinions on what you think about these songs and what they mean to you. The opinions of the music selected are only the opinions of Aaron and Curtis and may not reflect what the artist had in mind. They believe that is the beauty of music. It can mean so many different things to so many different people.  In short, Curtis came up with this quote to describe the show: “Sharing the joy of music in hopes of bringing back old memories or helping listeners discover unfamiliar artists, bands, or songs that they might want to look further into. At the same time, helping out Veterans and their families with donations along the way."Songs for this month are:1. Just Fine - Mary J. Blige2. Gypsys, Tramps, & Thieves - Cher3. Finishing With A Bang According To BILLY SHEEHAN From MR. BIG

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersMr. Big have been captivating music lovers since their inception in 1988 with an irresistible blending of rock and blues music that is as infectious as it is beautiful to hear. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1989, Mr. Big - (vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert and bassist Billy Sheehan) achieved universal breakthrough success with the follow-up Lean Into It, an album that spawned the smash single To Be With You that set Mr. Big on a collision course with destiny that has continued unabated ever since.A combination of musical brilliance, integrity and genuine love for their craft has allowed Mr. Big to perform for over three decades, but, sadly, all good things must come to an end and for Mr. Big that ending is delivered in the form of The Big Finish touring extravaganza that has wound its way around the world at select destinations from last year, winding up - at this stage - in Romania on August 27.But in true Mr. Big style, the band was not content to leave their fans with only the memories of their final live performances, but also announced their tenth studio album - appropriately named Ten - would be unleashed with a strong nod to the entire history of the band in a musical farewell that promises an eternal gateway into the sonic sensibilities of a band who may never be rivalled. With the release of Ten rapidly approaching its global birth on July 12, HEAVY had the honour of sitting down for a one-on-one with founding member Billy Sheehan to talk about the album, Mr. Big's legacy and more."It's our 10th studio record," Sheehan proudly affirmed. "There have been a lot of other records. The first time we played in Japan, we had a wonderful time. And they knew we wouldn't be coming back until the next record - which was going to be a cycle that happens - so they wanted a live record. And we didn't really have the facilities because we were on tour with Rush in America, and so the sound man took a DAT tape, a digital audio tape that they don't have many more that cost $7.95, and put it in and hit record on our show with no multi-track, no fixes, no overdubs, no nothing. So our recording budget for the whole show was $7.95 (laughs). That tape became the first Raw Like Sushi. I think in Korea it's sold like 350,000 units. I don't know how many in Japan, but I hope we recouped our investment (laughs). But it was kind of cool that it was completely real and no fixes, no turning the audience up or any of those cheaters that you can do. So we've done a lot of records. And there's a million bootlegs, too. There was a great bootleg store in Japan - I think they're long gone now - selling CDs, and they had the most amazing set of bootlegs you could imagine. I got the Band of Gypsys, Jimi Hendrix demos and rehearsals. I got Genesis', The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway demos. It's the most amazing thing, the Montrose first record, all the demos, Boston demos that led up to these iconic records. And so we'd go there after our show, and they'd already have our record with artwork for sale (laughs)."We ask Sheehan to tell us more about Ten musically."We took a break on a tour and were able to go in and record," he explained. "I was super busy and couldn't make it for the writing sessions, so I came in and just played bass and that was kind of cool. I just could go, what do you got? Okay, maybe this will work and I would put a little bass line down. The songs were very together, but it was nice to be able to just come in and create a baseline that just came from nowhere, just from my first impression of how the song went. I didn't have a lot of time to even rehearse the songs. So in a way, that was kind of good, too, because it was spontaneous and came right, I didn't think it through. Thinking often… thinking will ruin a song pretty easily. And that happens with writing a lot. You just come up with a part and like it (but) the next day you think maybe we should hold on a second. Wait a minute. We had it. And now you're changing your mind? So that was a cool way to approach it. I just went in and played bass, and we came up with some cool stuff."In the full interview, Billy discussed a range of topics related to music production and performance. He talked more about Ten and its significance as their 10th studio record. Billy provided a detailed account of the recording process for the singles Good Luck Trying and Up On You, emphasizing the value of spontaneity and avoiding overthinking when creating music. The conversation also touched on the art of song arranging and hit songwriting techniques, exploring the concept of motifs, key changes, and song structures. We discussed the deliberate use of songwriting mechanisms to create hits and the intentional avoidance of radio-friendly song titles by bands like Led Zeppelin. Additionally, he explored the importance of live performances and spontaneity in music production, emphasizing the raw energy and genuine feel that it brings to recordings, plus heaps more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

It's something he seems to struggle with even more than most other musicians. Or, at least, it's something he's chosen to sing about more often than most. It may in fact be the most common theme of all his music, besides obvious stuff like heartbreak and love.In "Albuquerque," Young is thinking about renting a car and driving from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Santa Fe, just to be alone and "independent from the scene." He never tells us why he's in Albuquerque to begin with, but he does tell us he wants to roll a joint and rent a car and stop to eat some "fried eggs and country ham."The "country ham" bit is kind of interesting, because country ham is a food popular in the southeast, not so much in the southwest. It's probably just a simple oversight on Young's part, but it may also reveal another common thread in Young's music: the escape into rural simplicity as a cure for the craziness and fakeness of modern day life.Phish first played this song on July 26, 1998 at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas, TX.Played a total of 17 timesLast played on June 11, 2011 at Merriweather Post Pavillion outside of D.C., gap of 457 shows  SHOW #2:           Spanish MoonPHISH : Spanish Moon : [LITTLE FEAT] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/15/2023 - YouTube:50 – 2:05October 15, 2023, Second set out of Pebbles and Marbles and into A Wave of Hope Little Feat cover, one of their most popular tunes. From the album, Feats Don't Fail Me Now, released in 1974 "Spanish Moon" was written and sung by guitarist Lowell George, who was a creative powerhouse in the early years of Little Feat. The song is about a fictional place called the Spanish Moon - a seedy club with whiskey and bad cocaine, but a girl singer that made it worth it. There are many dangers at the Spanish Moon, but the ones likely to do you in are the women.Lowell George was an excellent storyteller and created the Spanish Moon from his imagination, but he lived through the vices he describes in the song, especially cocaine. Around this time, his addictions were starting to overpower him, his health started failing, and he developed hepatitis. Feats Don't Fail Me Now was the last Little Feat album where he was clearly the leader; his contributions to the band slowly tailed off, and in 1979 he released a solo album. While on tour supporting it, he died of a heart attack at 34. Phish debuted it live on October 31, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City when Phish's musical costume was Waiting For Columbus, the famed Little Feat live album.Phish has performed it live only 3 timesLast before this show was on February 21, 2019 at Barcelo Maya Beach, Riviera Maya, Qunitana Roo, Mexico, gap of 170 shows  SHOW #3:           No QuarterPHISH : No Quarter : [LED ZEPPELIN] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/14/2023 - YouTube1:53 – 3:25October 14, 2023, Second Set, out of Everything's Right, into Fluffhead "No Quarter" is a song by Led Zeppelin that appears on their 1973 album Houses of the Holy. It was written by John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant. The song became a centerpiece at all Led Zeppelin concerts thereafter, until their final tour. It appears in both the film versions and both live album versions of The Song Remains the Same, released in 1976 and expanded in 2007. It appeared once more in 1994 on Page and Plant's reunion album as the title track. It also appears on Led Zeppelin's 2012 live album Celebration Day, which documented their 2007 reunion performance at the O2 Arena in London. It was re-released on the deluxe edition of Houses of the Holy. The title is derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent and from the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished. This theme is captured in several of the song's lyrics. Like "Immigrant Song" two albums prior, it evokes imagery from the Vikings and Norse mythology, with lyrics such as “the winds of Thor are blowing cold.”Record producer Rick Rubin remarked on the song's structure, "It takes such confidence to be able to get really quiet and loose for such a long time. Hendrix recruited bassist Billy Cox, who had played with him while they were in the army and his drummer friend Buddy Miles, for a new ensemble, Band of Gypsys. They recorded this as the B-side to his "Stepping Stone" single for Reprise, but it was quickly pulled after Hendrix complained about the mix. In a 2003 interview, Mick Jagger explained: "On the Forty Licks tour, when we were preparing the set list for a show in Yokohama, Chuck Leavell suggested we play 'Loving Cup,' the ballad from Exile on Main St. I didn't want to play the tune and I said, Chuck, this is going to die a death in Yokohama. I can't even remember the bloody song, and no one likes it. I've done it loads of times in America, it doesn't go down that well, it's a very difficult song to sing, and I'm fed up with it! Chuck went, Stick in the mud! so I gave in and put it in the set-list. Lo and behold, we went out, started the song and they all began applauding... Which just proves how, over time, some of these songs acquire a certain existence, or value, that they never had when they first came out. People will say, What a wonderful song that was, when it was virtually ignored at the time it was released." >> Phish debuted the song on February 3, 1993 at the Portland Expo in Portland, MaineInteresting because they did eventually cover Exile On Main Street as a Halloween musical costume on October 31, 2009 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, part of Phish Festival 8.Clearly one of their favorite covers, and a crowd pleaser, played 148 times.Last played before this show on August 5, 2023 at MSG, gap of 13 shows

Billy Brady is a son, a brother, a fiancé, a musician, and a guy -- if you're reading this at the time of release (Thursday morning, May 4, 2023) -- you might be able to catch on 90.1, KKFI FM this morning at 10:00 Central Standard. If you're catching this on Thursday or Friday, you can catch him and the Whiskey Mash Band playing live at Lemonade Park in the West Bottoms of Kansas City (tickets available here). If you didn't catch that in time, you can check out the Whiskey Mash Band's stuff here, or you can find their stuff on places like Facebook, Spotify, etc.Anyway...Billy was kind enough to stop by and talk, so we recorded Episode #64 together and chatted live music, and a little bit about a few of his favorite records, which were Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys (1970), The String Cheese Incident's Carnival '99 (2000), and Phish's Farmhouse (2000).Our conversation was a hoot and there are a lot of good things on the horizon for Billy and his outfit(s), so please give him a follow, catch him live (plenty of summer dates on the books), and consider supporting live, local music whenever and wherever you can.I know I fudged something in this interview, but I'm spacing it now.Oh, well. Thanks for stopping by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the promo or the intro/outro audio samples. I lifted them from Benevento/Russo Duo's, "Nashville" off of Play Pause Stop (2006), c/o Royal Potato Family and The String Cheese Incident's, "Bigger Isn't Better" from 1997's Born on the Wrong Planet (c/o SCI Fidelity Records), respectively.

I know I'm a broken record, but I LOVE his feel on the kit and I couldn't wait to get him on the show. He's overcome a lot in his life, including a period of 2 years where he lost hearing in his right ear, but it only made him into a better musician. We also talk about music helped him overcoming his social anxiety (something that I personally struggle with to this day). All in all, Jordan is a gem. I hope you enjoy the 5 records that helped shaped Jordan Rose into the drummer he is today. Funk was not only music made for dancing, but also to dream in colours as Jimi Hendrix would say about music. The show includes a selection of psychedelic gems of funk music breaking through to the extrasensory side. During the emerging time of African American expression and black power, funk was the soundtrack for this assertive awareness. Jimi Hendrix is one of the stars of this style. His blues guitar overdose with the Sandoz-made lysergic opened new ways to funk. Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton and Sly Stone were also three of the greatest pioneers of this formula. Their groups The Impressions, Funkadelic, Parliament and Sly & The Family Stone were the home of some of the inventive musicians of funk music. Larry Graham (Graham Central Station), the creator of the clapping bass style, the extravagant and not less ingenious bass player Bootsy Collins and the guitarist psych-funk groover Eddie Hazel are some of the most remarkable musicians. Psychedelic funk is not only a men club. Betty Davis, Miles's wife, was a great singer and one of the most outstanding funk performers with her wild stage antics of high octane energy. Plus Isaac Hayes - Mr Shaft-, the Chamber Brothers of “Time Has Come” fame and the New Orleans Voodoo funk masters, The Meters, making hypnotic music that will make you dance your mind and body. ** visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more **“The funk is the stench that you smell after you work really hard.” So says MURGA BOOKER, drummer, percussionist, shaman & card-carrying funkateer. And he would know. After all, from 1980 to ‘85, Booker was deeply embedded in the P-Funk camp, working with George Clinton and everyone else around Disc Ltd. Studios in Detroit. He was snatched up by Rubber Band drummer Frankie “Cash” Waddy and Bootsy Collins himself after they had heard him play the Moroccan clay drums at his pad. They were also impressed by Booker's work with Weather Report, bassist Michael Henderson, and Detroit soul group the Fantastic Four. By then, Muruga had figured out how to make himself indispensable to producers and bandleaders alike. “I saw everybody in Detroit at Motown playing congas and bongos and maybe some timbales.” He explains. “So I went to Israeli and Greek doumbek and Moroccan clay drums… By having those instruments, I was not in any direct competition.” This explains the sounds of albums like the Electric Spanking of War Babies, which you might have noticed has a lot more varied and freaky percussion in the mix than Funkadelic records previous. Muruga's funky hands are also busy on Clinton solo joints such as Computer Games (1982) and You Shouldn't Nuf Bit Fish (1983), the P-Funk AllStars' Urban Dance Floor Guerillas (1983), and the lesser known gem, a Bootsy project called GodMama (1981). But that's not all. Being around George during this period also put Murugua in direct proximity to Sly Stone, whom Booker was able to entice to play bass (!) on his project, Muruga and the Soda Jerks, a quirky, New Wave-sounding version of the P signed and produced by Clinton. But Muruga's contribution to Parliament-Funkadelic was not only musical but also medicinal. He served as the group's masseuse and yoga instructor, teaching Bernie Worrell, George, Sly, et al breathing techniques in between bites of Booker's mother's paprikash. But Muruga's musical journey didn't start with the P — not by a long shot. In fact, as a teenager in 1960, Steve (not yet Muruga) Booker already had a hit. The band was called the Low Rocks and the song was “Blueberry Jam,” a super-sped up reworking of “Blueberry Hill” by Fats Domino. “We were the young garage punks of the era” says Booker, who was recruited directly from the audience when the previous Low Rocks drummer abruptly quit at a house party. The gig wound up lasting only a year, but the band had some exciting opportunities, including backing up Little Stevie Wonder in a battle of the bands. Soon after that, Steve Booker began to see the drums not just as an instrument but also as a theory of life. He basically moved into Detroit's legendary blues and folk club the Chess Mate, where he would eventually become bandleader. There he would play hours-long drum solos every night. But the young Serbian stickman still lacked some key ingredients. One night, after he had finished yet another one of his extended excursions, a Black gentleman approached. “I see what you're trying to do,” he told Booker. But rather then launching into a lecture, the man handed him a cassette tape of Drums of Passion by Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji. And just like that, Booker's life changed. He spent the next two weeks in his mom's living room, eight hours per day, dancing to Drums and seeing how the music made his body move. Things were starting to make sense. “If you do not love Africa or it's people, then you cannot love the blues, or jazz, or rock and roll,” he says. The lessons came in handy when he played support for none other than John Lee Hooker, whom he grew to admire deeply. “I realized that Hooker was not just a blues man, but he was a spiritual ju ju man, a healer,” says Booker. “Also he was a storyteller… That comes from griot. The griot is the storyteller of the tribe.” The pairing of the two went so well they were featured as a double bill, “Hooker & Booker.” Booker also had some of the best jams in his life at The Scene club in New York, where the top musicians of the day would go to let it all hang out musically when they weren't in the studio or on tour. There the Band of Gypsys' Buddy Miles served as a musical lightning rod of sorts. “When you go play the top clubs like The Scene,” Booker explains, “it's top musicians going there, but jamming and intermingling and exchanging with each other… That's the place where a George Clinton or a Sly Stone or a Mitch Mitchell or a Larry Coryell could go. But Buddy Miles… He was creating an atmosphere that drew all of those musicians like bees to honey.” By the late 60's into the 70s, Booker's deep plunges into musical depths had evolved into an intense curiosity and appreciation for spiritual contemplation—even more so than many peers of the era. This phase of his journey truly began on Day 1 of the iconic Woodstock Festival, where he landed in a helicopter to perform with Tim Hardin. It was there that he found himself in the presence of Swami Satchidananda, with whom Booker would live in ashram for two years as a celibate monk. In fact, it was Satchidananda who gave Muruga his name.As a result of such intense studies, Muruga became very adept at tuning in rather than tuning out, and adapting his more avant garde, exploratory tendencies to a centered principle. “A musician has to listen,” he explains. “Then you respond.” But he contends that he reached his highest plateau as a drummer once he mastered the concept of ambience and space, which he defines as: “to play the space as well as the note, and to create ambience with the space within the notes.” This seemingly unlikely marriage of freedom and discipline ultimately leads to Muruga's theory of employing “law and grace” when serving up the Funk. “1-2-3-4 is a law,” he teaches. “On the one is the law… But grace is ‘I'm being in the oneness' while I am playing.” In other words, the law guides you until you are ready to transcend it, to exist in the groove. “You must know this,” he insists. “Otherwise you don't even know funk.” Today, Muruga lives in Ann Arbor and is as jovial and active as ever, an orthodox priest and patented inventor of the Nada drum with a catalog of music that is deep and wide. In this expansive, inspiring and often hilarious interview, Muruga talks about how he used to add wah-wah's and phasers to his cymbals in order to “wake people up” by reenacting the then-ongoing Vietnam War onstage—causing half an audience in the South to give him a standing ovation, and the other half to walk out. Muruga also talks about why the rhythmic concept of “the push and drag” is the essence of life, mistakes drummers tend to make when playing the blues, and why he got scared the first time he heard the drum machine. As if that weren't enough, Muruga also describes being made fun of by Don Rickles for 20 minutes straight, the magic of Sly Stone's recording techniques, why Richie Havens is an “illuminary,” and that time he jammed one-on-one with JIMI HENDRIX on bass.Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted by Jay Stonew/ Content Produced by Aaron Booker & AndreFoxxeWebsite & Art by 3chardsEngineered by Nick “Waes” Carden at the Blue Room in Oakland, CABut we couldn't have done it without Mawnstr and especially Scott SheppardIntro track “I Can Never Be” from Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth by the Funkanauts. This week we chat with Grace Clarke about which of life's truths can be learned from the musical that is all-Cher, all-the-time - the Cher Show!"Choosing to recreate the spirit of the television variety shows that Sonny and Cher — and then Cher sans Sonny — headlined in the ‘70s is a choice that lands as flat as the jokes in Broadway’s latest jukebox bio, “The Cher Show.” Its attempt to celebrate the resilience of its “bad-ass” star and her half-century career of highs and lows rarely rises above that TV series’ taste for cliches, corn and cheese. Despite an icon with attitude, an armful of pop tunes and a can-do cast, the script never quite finds a satisfying style — or a genuine heart — as a winning stage musical. As Cher might say: Broadway’s a bitch. You know a show’s in trouble when the moments that elicit the biggest applause of the night don’t even feature its title character. There’s a mini-fashion show featuring over-the-top outfits by original Cher designer Bob Mackie — who created the costumes for the musical — that’s a stunner of shameless excess. There’s also a dazzling number choreographed by Christopher Gattelli featuring a knockout dancer (Ashley Blair Fitzgerald) representing “The Dark Lady” of one of Cher’s songs."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cher_Show_(musical)https://thechershowbroadway.com/https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-production/the-cher-show-518460https://www.broadway.com/shows/cher-show/cast/https://www.facebook.com/TheCherShow/https://broadwaymusicalhome.com/shows/cher-show.htmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Elicehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_J._Blockhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Got_You_Babehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beat_Goes_On_(Sonny_%26_Cher_song)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gypsys,_Tramps_and_Thieveshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Thunderfuckhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adore_Delanohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad_MichaelsLike us on
