Today's show is the second visit in the past … we go back in time and listen to a beautiful mix of cinematic, progressive and typical electronic tunes that made this station big! Just after Apple added the ‘podcast' functionality to iTunes. We shot up in the number of listeners, from a tight 100 to well over 4000 downloads per show. After that, however, it really took off with over 20,000 downloads per episode. The music is exceptionally powerful, even now. In fact: if you listen carefully, there were very smart people 20 years ago who knew very well how ‘question and answer' works in music and why the tunes stick in our brains. Nowadays, this is different. More about this later. Now sit back and enjoy this audio spectacle in a nonstop jacket, remastered, recompressed, sublime, except for a small distortion in the first track that could not be repaired. Can you forgive me, I hope? …. Ft. Cliff Martinez, Mosaik, Spielerei, RymdLego, Jason Corder, Artemis, ENV(itre), Ascian, Mikael Fyrek. Want to know why social closeness and connection in college is critical? Jason Corder, born in San Francisco in 1969, is a TEDx speaker, keynote speaker, author, cultural envoy, and coach who advises on mental and physical health. A graduate of Swarthmore College, he enjoyed a 20-year career as a visual artist, in which he was awarded a Ballinglen Fellowship and was a Sovereign European Art Prize Nominee. Having spent more than two decades living abroad, in Africa and Europe, he hones this global perspective into talks, workshops, podcast conversations and the like, to deepen dialogue and heighten perception. He lives with his three sons in Arizona. His TEDx talk is called "Social Closeness and Re-Establishing Connection". In episode 464 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Jason decided on Swarthmore College for his undergraduate experience, what is was like living in Nairobi (Kenya), what he learned about the culture clash between Blacks and Whites, what is the research that shows why social closeness and connection in college is so important, why TEDx puts warning labels on some of the talks online, how we can stop our addiction to our phones, why we need to talk about mental health and wellness, and how we can find mindfulness and playfulness as adults. Enjoy!
About the Guest(s):Jason Corder joined hosts Mike and Torya on "The Nightly Rant" to share his intriguing perspectives on societal trends, comedy, and the convergence of entertainment mediums. With a rich background in film and a recent venture into public speaking, Jason executed a TEDx talk that emphasizes his prowess in communicating complex ideas effectively. Well-versed in the art of distillation, whether in his day job involving alcohol salesmanship or presenting grand concepts in bite-sized formats, Jason's comedic and intellectual prowess illuminates unconventional connections between past and present cultures.Episode Summary:In this enthralling edition of "The Nightly Rant," the hosts, Mike and Torya, are accompanied by a special guest, Jason Corder. The episode embarks on a conversational journey exploring the cultural impact of Monty Python and its unintentional paving of the way for modern platforms like TikTok. Anecdotal and humorous, the conversation sheds light on the evolution of content consumption, societal shifts, and the adventures inherent in professional transitions and technological challenges. The group delves into personal stories, drawing parallels between Monty Python's quick-witted sketches and TikTok's swift, punchy content. Jason shares his insights into the shrinking attention spans, the surge of hyper-individualism in entertainment, and the key to his recent transition to public speaking, which includes his TEDx talk debut. He energetically illustrates the idea of distilling complex messages into streamlined yet impactful narratives that resonate with contemporary audiences. In some ways, this episode itself is like a modern Monty Python skit: a satirical take on today's society delivered with brevity and sharpness.Key Takeaways:Monty Python's ability to condense complex concepts into short skits laid the groundwork for content in today's era, such as on TikTok.The discussion highlights a cultural shift towards hyper-individualism and its side effects on community and personal connection.Jason Corder leveraged his engaging speaking skills to execute a TEDx talk, embarking on a fulfilling career pivot focusing on public speaking. The episode emphasizes the importance of persistence and adaptability, especially when transitioning career paths later in life.Anecdotes and professional experiences serve as a source of comedic relief while offering insights into societal observations.Notable Quotes:"Jason: My dad warped my mind from the age of five, but he used a technique called Monty Python's Flying Circus.""Jason: Monty Python might have been in some ways, as you guys know, here to me, and from very early age.""Jason: …the TikTokization of our culture. But I do think there's also, just conceptually and artistically, there are some interesting things, and it reminds me of Monty Python being able to distill huge concepts down into one weird gesture or one two second joke.""Jason: …things are shorter and shorter. We have shorter and shorter attention spans. But that was the idea.""Mike: I think that's funny."Resources:Jason Corder's TEDx talk can be found by searching TEDx and his name, "Jason Corder."Jason offers professional speaking services through his website, Tactile Land, which can be reached at tactileland.com.We encourage listening to the entire episode to capture the full-spirited dialogue and gain more nuanced insights into the compelling topic addressed by Jason, Mike, and Torya. Stay tuned to "The Nightly Rant" for more thought-provoking discussions that challenge conventional thinking through sarcastic yet insightful lenses. Today's guest deejay is Thomas Meluch, AKA Benoît Pioulard. Thomas's music kept popping up on Soundwave mixes. It wasn't until I asked Andrew Tasselmyer whom he knew, who might share a mix on the show, and he said Thomas that I understood the universe was trying to send me a message: get Thomas on Soundwave. At least, that's how I interpret it. Oh, and listen to Andrew's mix here. Thomas's music is warm and intimate. I'm listening to the Communiqué album he recorded with Jogging House as I write this, and it's perfect listening for a crisp winter night. I was curious to hear who'd include in his mix. When I saw Jason Corder's offthesky project in his playlist, I knew I was in good hands. Whereas Thomas's music is warm fire to rub your hands to, his mix feels like stepping out to a bracing day with magical side quests. Again, my subjective interpretation. I'm glad I listened to the universe. Speaking of Thomas's music, he has a new vocal album called Eidetic coming out on Morr Music in March 2023. He also has a Bandcamp subscription with lots of exclusive music, and it is constantly evolving. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Ian Wellman. See you then. Jason Corder is a whirlwind of production. Over 70 releases. Tons of work with game music and sound design. Video work a-plenty. Live performances. The whole package - he's the kind of guy that is an inspiration to me. And I think you'll feel the same way. You can check out Jason's work at http://noise.offthesky.com/, or dig some of his more performative work on his Soundcloud page here: https://soundcloud.com/offthesky. There are a number of interviews of him online; they are worth reading, because they further the story of this remarkable musician and sound designer. This is a little treat from us at the AMT podcast to you: here in the US, it's Thanksgiving, which means hanging around family (and wanting badly to get back to the studio...), eating like crazy and waiting around for Black Friday sales to kick off. I thought it would be nice to have something to listen to during this mess; I hope you enjoy. And if you are outside the US, it's a nice chance for me to say "Thank You" for continuing to listen. This is one of my favorite chats ever; I hope that you get as inspired by Jason's perspectives as I did. I just picked up some MPC libraries on sale, so I think I'm going to ditch everybody and crank out some toonage! Enjoy, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Since Jason Corder decided that becoming a weather man was farcely over-rated, he coined the ambiguously fitted moniker 'Off the Sky' which was in reality birthed in transit of his experimenting with converting chaos theories (especially those relating to weather systems*) into musical forms. And really its just an apropos title summating this atmospheric and acoustic communal project emanating from his studio in Kentucky ergo USA. Offthesky is truly a humble handle that reflects both Jason's mild manered nature and his "in-the-clouds" mind-set when relating to others. His musical miasmatic manifestations are loosely inspired by chaos theory mathematics, dark foreboding jazz, and various natural substances... The Jukebox plays "From Cold Distances to a Warm Place". Like more of his tracks, this one can be seen as 'glue' between other tracks, creating the perfect sound bath, the perfect moments, the movie directed by Jason Corder a.k.a. Off the Sky.
