If you thought Drive was a stylish slow burn, this one cranks up the stillness, strips back the dialogue, and drops you into a hallucinatory revenge opera that's equal parts mesmerizing and maddening.Ryan Gosling stars as Julian, a quiet, emotionally blank drug smuggler running a Muay Thai gym as a front in Bangkok. When his volatile brother Billy is murdered for committing an unspeakable crime, their monstrous mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives in town demanding vengeance. Julian is reluctantly pulled into a spiral of violence and surreal symbolism, facing off against Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), a sword-wielding police lieutenant who dispenses his own brutal, godlike justice. Refn drenches the screen in glowing reds and deep shadows, pairing every scene with an eerie, droning score from Cliff Martinez. The film is light on plot and even lighter on dialogue—Gosling speaks fewer than 20 lines—but the atmosphere is thick enough to cut with a katana.Only God Forgives is a fever dream of a film—icy cold yet visually scorching. It's like a revenge thriller that's been put through a Lynchian blender, leaving behind a hushed, haunted meditation on masculinity, vengeance, and judgement. If you want action, go elsewhere. If you want mood and madness, step right in.
Evaluating Risk. When making important decisions, one should always determine strengths and weaknesses. Of course, with consistency free from corruptive values like manipulation, lies, or governmental propaganda, one should evaluate risk. When you have power and overwhelming popular support, you may not be successful. Let's face it: Politicians in power have produced a $36 trillion debt that every man, woman, and child in America owns. “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” released on January 10, 2025, is the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2018 heist thriller “Den of Thieves.” Directed by Christian Gudegast, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul T. Scheuring, the film reunites stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr., reprising their roles as the relentless Los Angeles Sheriff's Department detective Nicholas “Big Nick” O'Brien and the cunning thief Donnie Wilson. This installment shifts the action from the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the sun-drenched, glamorous locales of Europe, delivering a high-stakes diamond heist narrative inspired by the real-life 2003 Antwerp diamond robbery. Produced by Lionsgate, alongside Diamond Film Productions, G-BASE, and Tucker Tooley Entertainment, the film blends tactical crime drama with a newfound lightness, trading the original's brooding intensity for a more playful, buddy-cop dynamic. The story picks up with Big Nick, still reeling from personal turmoil, including a recent divorce, as he tracks Donnie across Europe. Donnie, now entangled with the notorious Panther mafia, is orchestrating a daring heist targeting the world's largest diamond exchange in Nice, France. The plot kicks off with a pulse-pounding opening in Antwerp, where Donnie and the Panther Crew, led by the enigmatic Jovanna (Evin Ahmad), steal a rare red diamond, setting the stage for a cat-and-mouse game. Nick, gone rogue from his department, pursues Donnie not just to apprehend him but with a surprising twist of intent—teaming up for the heist. Their unlikely alliance, cemented over drunken shawarma and banter about French cuisine, injects the film with a shaggy charm reminiscent of early “Fast & Furious” films, though it's layered with Gudegast's signature procedural detail.Spanning 144 minutes, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” luxuriates in its slow-burn buildup, dedicating much of its runtime to the meticulous planning of the diamond center break-in. From camera cycles to fake identities, the film revels in heist logistics, punctuated by tension from vengeful ex-crew members and a Sardinian mobster demanding the stolen diamond's return. The payoff arrives in the second hour with a gripping infiltration sequence and a standout car chase through the French Alps, evoking Michael Mann's “Heat” and John Frankenheimer's “Ronin.” Butler's Nick, hanging off Donnie's getaway car, firing at pursuers, anchors the visceral action, shot with a metallic realism by cinematographer Terry Stacey using Arri Alexa cameras. The cast expands with strong supporting turns from Evin Ahmad as a potential love interest for Nick, Salvatore Esposito as a mafia heavy, and Meadow Williams reprising her role from the first film. Filmed across Tenerife, the Canary Islands, and the UK from April to July 2023, the production transformed Santa Cruz streets into a French diamond district, enhancing the film's European flair. Kevin Matley's score replaces Cliff Martinez's from the original, adding a fresh sonic pulse to the Mediterranean setting.Critically, the film sits at a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, lauded for Butler's charisma and the thrilling set pieces, though some, like Rolling Stone's David Fear, critique its convoluted plot and overlong runtime. Grossing $57.3 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, it topped the U.S. box office with a $15 million opening weekend. Now streaming on Netflix as of March 20, 2025, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” refines its predecessor's macho ethos into a more elegant, if familiar, thriller—leaving the door ajar for a third installment, already greenlit, set in Africa.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Just hanging out all day with family, eating and drinking. Perfect. The songs in this mix were all chosen for the titles, which all fit the Thanksgiving theme. Besides the obvious titles with the word "thanks" my favorite track titles are "my dad's famous potatoes", "Give me cornbread when I'm hungry", and "An Awkward Conversation at a Family Gathering." Today's show is the second visit in the past … we go back in time and listen to a beautiful mix of cinematic, progressive and typical electronic tunes that made this station big! Just after Apple added the ‘podcast' functionality to iTunes. We shot up in the number of listeners, from a tight 100 to well over 4000 downloads per show. After that, however, it really took off with over 20,000 downloads per episode. The music is exceptionally powerful, even now. In fact: if you listen carefully, there were very smart people 20 years ago who knew very well how ‘question and answer' works in music and why the tunes stick in our brains. Nowadays, this is different. More about this later. Now sit back and enjoy this audio spectacle in a nonstop jacket, remastered, recompressed, sublime, except for a small distortion in the first track that could not be repaired. Degenerates Andy S and Brandon Bombay kick things into fifth gear as they talk about the modern crime classic, 'Drive.' Bombay recalls how when the movie started permeating into popular culture he bonded with a stripper who loved the film and its indelible soundtrack. Then the fellas dissect Nicolas Winding Refn's gorgeously shot movie which borrowed heavily from crime films from the '70s and '80s, and transposed those aesthetics into the modern era. Arguably one of the great style over substance movies of this decade, the film stars a magnetically brooding Ryan Gosling, and is buoyed by not only an infectious soundtrack, but a mesmerizing score from Cliff Martinez. Those soothing visuals and sounds are juxtaposed against jarring violence which would go on to become a staple in Refn's later works.

Nuclear Confrontation. If I'm right and Iran now possesses nuclear weapons, the war in the Middle East is about to get a lot bloodier. Hezbollah with Iranian forces will conduct a war of attrition against Israel's northern border. And if Israel believes it's in a war for its survival, it may use its nuclear bombs to protect itself. This is a war to the death. America will not sacrifice American lives especially if another truth is revealed: The Middle East is running out of its reserves of crude oil and will prompt a financial crisis leaving America without a reason to help. Consuming. Few of us understand what it takes to render an animal for our consumption. This country slaughters billion of animals each year and 30 to 40% end up as waste deposited as garbage in landfills. That's nearly criminal if not immoral. Killing animals is a big business. We not only have a dead beat government with 32 trillion dollars in debt, we have a wasteful society. Autumn brings transformations both subtle and powerful. The shadows lengthen as the focus of the sun moves south below the equator. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we now experience rapid seasonal climate change on top of slow global climate change. It's a transition marked by familiar changes in temperature, color, and activity in the natural world, disrupted by increasingly extreme weather events. For ambient musicians, it's a time for complex tone colors burnished with glints of silver and gold, bittersweet harmonies, descending progressions, and gently melancholy emotions. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we transition to the darkening electro-acoustic soundscapes of autumn, on a program called SHADOWLANDS 2. This week, the boys watch a movie that's less Fast and the Furious and more Fuck A Guy Up With A Hammer. Don your signature scorpion jackets and a pair of creepy gloves and join us as we discuss "Drive" and its electronic-inspired score by Cliff Martinez!
Is this another episode where Seth and Jason talk about sci-fi movies or are these merely projections of Seth and Jason conjured from dreams?!? This week we head to the mysterious planet of Solaris twice so that Jason can make the case that Steven Soderbergh's 2002 box office bomb starring George Clooney is actually superior to the "original" Soviet film from 1972, which has long been hailed as a sci-fi masterpiece. Along the way we talk a ton about pacing, another banger Cliff Martinez soundtrack, Animal Crossing art, shawls, Viola Davis, Insane Clown Posse, and maybe the most inexplicable driving sequence ever committed to film.

(TSAP S04E06) In this episode, Sam Hughes speaks with composer Raphael Reed about his journey into writing music, being a working composer in Canada, his influences and inspirations as well as his philosophies on the process! A great honest and creative conversation worth listening to! Raphaël Reed is a Canadian composer and sound artist based in Montreal. Trained in classical guitar from an early age and a graduate from the University of Montreal in Music Research and Contemporary Creation, his style is an innovative hybrid integrating analog synth, electro-acoustic gestures, and classical instruments. After being active in the underground music scene in Montreal, he's currently dedicating most of his time as a music composer. In film and television, his compositions include the soundtracks of Crisis (2021) from Director Nicholas Jarecki. Cliff Martinez being an advisor for the creation of the soundtrack, this experience has been a milestone in Raphaël's career and a consolidation of his music personality. His other music scores include, amongst others, The Walrus and the WhistleBlower (2020), Louise Lecavalier: In Motion (2018), Révolution (2018), 1:54 (2016), and A Little Bit Of Zombie (2012). In largescale live events, he co-composed the opening soundtrack for the 2014 UEFA Champions League final held in Portugal, he directed and composed the music for the Chimelong International Circus in China (2017), and composed the music for the Cité de l'Énergie in Shawinigan, Quebec (2018) and for The Carnaval de Québec (2019). For Cité mémoire, he composed the music for two events celebrating John Lennon's bed-in at The Fairmount Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal: a virtual reality interactive installation taking place in the bedroom (suite 1742) and a video playing in the hotel lobby directed by Michel Lemieux and Michel Marc Bouchard. His music has been heard in hundreds of advertisements, most notably the Skechers ad presented at the Super Bowl (2012) and the international publicity campaign for Dove Legacy (2015). DEVS, a tv series on FX/Hulu, is easily one of the best things I've ever seen on tv. It's written, directed and produced by Alex Garland the man responsible for Ex Machina & Annihilation, two of my favorite films of the last ten years. The sound design and music in his films is always perfect. His musical collaborators are Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow and they are responsible for the music in DEVS as well. Garland lets scenes breathe, lets the music wash over you as the camera lingers. It's difficult to separate the original music from pre-existing music used in the series. No soundtrack has been released so this mix has none of the newly written score. But I was able to track down a few of the pre-existing tracks that were used. The most important of which is Jan Garbarek - Regnantem Sempiterna. It makes several appearances throughout the series. One of the other pieces I was happy to find is Fortunate Ones by The Beacon Sound Choir. I ended up using two other tracks from them because it fit the style of the show perfectly. I used several tracks from other soundtracks by Salisbury & Barrow and a few from the new Johann Johannsson album. I also used some favorite tracks from Cliff Martinez because of the steel drum sound he uses. Salisbury & Barrow used that same type of sound throughout their score. And anybody that has seen the series finale will know why I used Rachmaninov - Dues Meus. If you haven't seen the series I highly recommend it. And then, of course, listen to this mix. Cheers! The title of this mix pretty much says it all - this is a collection of excellent tracks from excellent science fiction films. This isn't meant to be definitive as in "The Best SciFi Soundtracks of All Time!" It's just some of my favorite music from some of my favorite sci fi films. I purposely stayed away from stuff like Star Wars, Star Trek, Close Encounters and 2001. Those are a little too recognizable and most of the time don't fit with the ambient feel of this mix. I just had to start the mix with what may be my all time favorite sci fi soundtrack - Solaris by Cliff Martinez. I like the movie pretty well but the soundtrack is what really made that film for me. Another soundtrack that I absolutely had to include is Arrival from Johann Johannsson. Easily my favorite film of last year and the soundtrack made me love it even more. A lot of the music in this mix is fairly new, released within the last ten years or so. The exception being the tracks from Blade Runner and Dune. Are there any sci fi soundtracks that I should check out for further mixes? Any favorite sci fi film music that you have? Let me know in the comments. Cheers! As with so many of these mixes this one grew out of one particular recording. In this case it was The Revenant soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto with Alva Noto. It's an absolutely gorgeous film score and I knew I needed to build a mix around it. This mix, as the title suggests, is fairly atmospheric in feel and sound. The tracks used are a combo of newer recordings & old ones too, with The Revenant making three appearances. That soundtrack is definitely going to be on my best of list at the end of 2016.
