We study Ps 23 thru the eyes of our personal covenant relationship with the LORD = YEHOVAH, God's covenant Name. 8 compound Covenant Names cover all blessings of the New Covenant. The 1st is: “The LORD is my SHEPHERD” (v1), Yehovah Rohi. Jesus said: “I AM the good SHEPHERD” of Ps 23 (Jn 10:11,14), speaking of His loving care for us. I AM = YEHOVAH, so His I AM claims correspond to the YEHOVAH Names. As our risen Shepherd, as Ps 23 says, He leads us into our full inheritance, described by these Names. True shepherding means a devoted personal relationship between shepherd & sheep. He lives in personal relationship with his sheep & knows them all by name; they know his voice & follow him. This is seen in the word MY: ‘The Lord is MY Shepherd.' He cares for me, watches over, leads, feeds & preserves me. His constant presence protects them from danger. David, an experienced shepherd, knew of what he talked, a man (who sought) after God's own heart to know Him (1Sam 13:14, Acts 13:22) and God revealed His heart of love to Him, the heart of a shepherd, that just as he cared for his sheep, protecting, providing, leading & rescuing them, so that's how God is toward His people. As he was devoted to his sheep, so God is fully committed to us, laying down His life for us. He found comfort & security in the covenant-keeping God caring for him, as a devoted shepherd for his sheep. v1b: “I shall not want” = Yehovah Yireh, the LORD my PROVIDER (seeing ahead & providing for us by His Sacrifice, Gen 22;14). He said: “I AM the BREAD of LIFE” (Jn 6:35). By the provision of Himself, in His death & resurrection He meets all our needs (Ro 8:32, 5000). “I'll not want” confesses covenant confidence in Him. v2: “He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters” = Yehovah Shalom, the Lord my Peace (Jud 6:24). He said: “I AM the VINE” (Jn 15:1, Eph 2:14). v3: “He restores my soul” = Yehovah Rophe, the Lord my Healer (Ex 15:26). He said: “I AM the Resurrection & Life” (Jn 11:26). v3b: “He leads me in the paths of RIGHTEOUSNESS for His Name's sake” = Yehovah Tsidkenu, the Lord my Righteousness (Jer 23:6, 33:16). He said: “I AM the DOOR” into God's Presence & Kingdom (Jn 10:7,9). v4: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for YOU are WITH ME Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” = Yehovah Shammah, the LORD is PRESENT (Ezek 48:35). He said: “I AM the LIGHT” (Jn 8:12, 9:5). As sheep on their own are helpless, lost & defenceless, so without our Shepherd we'd be destroyed. Ps 23 is most beloved for believers, for it tells us we're never alone, without help or hope. Now the scene changes. The Shepherd is now a King giving a bountiful Banquet. v5: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies” = Yehovah Nissi, the Lord my Banner of Victory (Ex 17:15). The risen Christ claims this (Rev 1:18). A good host gave protection & provision for his guests. To prepare (set in order) suggests foresight & care, 'before me' means personal provision. He knows all our needs & prepared His perfect provision for us of every blessing, in this life (with our enemies present) & eternity. To dine together signified abiding friendship. In context, to sit at table with the Lord & partake of the meal He's prepared is the manifestation of our covenant relationship & close fellowship (Rev 3:20). He shows His love, by preparing an everlasting feast for us in His Presence, under His Banner of Protection, for He won the Victory for us (Song 2:4). A fulfilment of this is Holy Communion. He invites us to come & partake of Himself. Every blessing revealed by Ps 23 & 8 Covenant Names is ours in Christ. He wants us to draw near & receive of His abundance. v5b: “You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over” = Yehovah M'kaddesh, the LORD my Sanctifier (Lev 20:8). He said: “I AM the WAY, TRUTH & LIFE” (Jn 14:6). A host anoints his guest with oil (Lk 7:44-46), representing sanctification & empowerment with His Spirit. ‘My cup runs over' speaks of a generous host, ever filling our cup to overflowing (Eph 5:18), giving us life & joy in His Spirit (Jn 10:10). His abundant provision shows His great love for us, but the main blessing of the Banquet is to be with Him. Ps 23 concludes with a summary of the results of the Shepherd's Ministry to us in this life & eternity, v6: “Surely goodness (grace) & mercy (chesed) shall follow (pursue) me (with vigor) all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the House of the Lord (Heaven) forever.” He's sure of enjoying His Presence all his life, & that He'll lead him thru the valley of death to Heaven, where he'll dwell with Him forever - a key verse to comfort those facing death. Don't follow (covet) blessings, but follow our Shepherd & the blessings will follow. His Ministry as our personal Shepherd continues forever (Rev 7:15-17). Grace & mercy covers all. In grace He gives what we don't deserve & in mercy He doesn't give what we deserve.

God has already provided healing for us in the Atonement of Christ, so now it is not a matter of trying to get God to heal us, but of learning how to RECEIVE our HEALING. We need to RECEIVE our HEALING by FAITH in the Word of God. Mark 11:24: “Whatsoever THINGS you desire (such as HEALING), when you pray, BELIEVE that (1) you RECEIVE them (your HEALING), and (2) you will HAVE them (in manifestation).” In order to have the confidence to believe we receive our healing from God when we pray, we need to embrace some BELIEFS about HEALING from the Word of God. There are 4 key STEPS we need to take in order to get into position, so that we can believe that we receive our healing when we pray. These 4 STEPS are 4 BELIEFS from the Word of God that we need to embrace. *STEP 1: We first need to know that it is God's WILL to HEAL us, otherwise it is impossible for us to believe we receive our healing when we pray (Mark 11:24). The Bible reveals it is God's WILL to HEAL us. Healing was purchased for us by the great sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross. *STEP 2: We must BELIEVE that God is a rich and liberal Giver of Healing. He gives us healing when we pray. He is the God of the immediate response. We must BELIEVE that He is our HEALER today: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, TODAY and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He WANTS to HEAL us now. LOOK to the LORD for your HEALING, rather than being preoccupied with the problem. If we are overly preoccupied with the problem, we will fail to receive the solution (healing). Hebrews 11:6: “Without FAITH it is impossible to please Him, for he who COMES to God MUST BELIEVE that (1) HE IS (our Healer), and that (2) He is a REWARDER (a generous giver of healing) of those who diligently SEEK Him (in prayer).” These 2 BELIEFS are the first 2 STEPS of FAITH. *STEP 3: God gives us HEALING POWER when we pray and ask Him to heal us, which then works mightily in us to drive out all sickness and to restore our health. *STEP 4: God ordained the Method of the Laying on of Hands to impart Healing Power. Romans 10:10: “(1) With the HEART one BELIEVES unto righteousness (right standing in the promise), and with the MOUTH, CONFESSION is made unto SALVATION (the manifestation of the promise).” So believe you receive your healing and keep SPEAKING God's WORD: “By His STRIPES I am HEALED. Jesus Himself BORE my SICKNESSES and CARRIED away my PAINS” (Isaiah 53:4-5, literal translation, Matthew 8:17, 1Peter 2:24). Hilary completes her study by a look at the healing of Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46--52).

Pastor Ashley continues in the Names of God series, teaching on Jehovah Rophe. The post Names of God-Jehovah Rophe appeared first on Christian Ministries Church.
One of the ways God revealed Himself to His people in the Old Covenant was by giving them a Name by which to know and understand Him. In this Mass, He reveals to us that He is Jehovah Rophe. That Name in Hebrews means I AM healing, I am both Physician and Cure for my people. The context of His healing work in our lives is always relationship. Today we examine the relationship between the Great Physician and those with illness and disfigurement of soul, mind, and body. The One Who is healing is always pursuing us, knocking at the door to let Him come in and be Who He is for us. Are we responding to the knock; opening the door so that He can come in and heal?

Now the name Jehovah is filled with meaning. In our English Bible it is either translated LORD or GOD when used with Adonai Jehovah – (Lord GOD). It is also pronounced Yahweh. This name comes from the Hebrew verb hayah, which signifies “to be” or “to become”. When translated in the first person, it becomes as in Exodus 3:14 - “I Am,” said twice. “I Am that I Am”. The name LORD, therefore, points to the God who is continuously becoming – “the Self-Existing One.” G. Campbell Morgan – defined Jehovah as, “The Becoming One – that is the One Who becomes to His people all that they need!” Some interpret the name LORD as containing two truths in one name. The first meaning is: “the One who exists in Himself.” The second is: “the One who reveals Himself.” The Jews well knew the significance of this great Name. When Jesus stood before them and said, "Before Abraham was I AM," (John 8:58), they knew He was claiming to be God, in the absolute sense of the word. He was claiming that the Jesus of the New Testament was the Jehovah of the Old Testament. So it is interesting that this great chapter begins with the compound name of Jehovah which is Jehovah-Rohi. Jehovah-Rohi combines the personal name of God, Yahweh (or Jehovah), with the descriptive name of God, Rohi or Ro‘i, meaning, “my Shepherd.” Elsewhere God is simply called the Shepherd. The root word is ra‘ah which means to feed and tend domestic animals by pasturing them. This name speaks of God caring for His people in practical ways as well as providing spiritual sustenance. There are at least seven more compound names of Jehovah in the Old Testament that are reflected in the contents of this Psalm. "I shall not want", tells us that the LORD is Jehovah-Jireh, which means “in the mount it shall be seen that the Lord will provide". We learn of this name in Genesis 22:14 where God on Mt. Moriah provided Abraham a substitute ram to sacrifice instead of his son Isaac. “He leads me beside still waters", speaks of Jehovah-Shalom, Who is "the Lord our peace". When the LORD ask Gideon to attack the enemy with 300 men and Gideon was afraid, He revealed Himself to him by this name of Jehovah. This is found in Judges 6:24. "He restores my soul" informs us that the LORD is Jehovah-Rophe, "the Lord who heals". The LORD reveal Himself by this name to Israel at the bitter waters of Marah in the wilderness in Exodus 15:26. There Moses was told by God to cut down a tree and throw it into the bitter water and immediately it became sweet and drinkable. "He leads me in paths of righteousness", helps us to understand that the LORD is Jehovah-Tsidkenu, "the Lord our righteousness". This name of Jehovah is found in Jeremiah 33:16 where the LORD promises to save and redeem His people and become their salvation. "You are with me" reflects the name Jehovah-Shammah, "the Lord is there". We read about this name in Ezekiel 48:35, when the LORD restores the temple and once again dwells in the midst of His people. "In the presence of my enemies", assures us that the LORD is "Jehovah-Nissi, "the Lord our banner". This name is found in Exodus 17:15 where when LORD is lifted up, He gives victory to His people. "You anoint my head with oil", reminds us that the LORD is Jehovah-M'Kaddesh, "the Lord who sanctifies". We see this name in Leviticus 20:8, where the LORD sets apart His people and makes them holy through the sacrificial blood. I pray today that you will worship the LORD in a fresh and new way as you trust Him to be all you need. Today He is saying to you and me, “I AM your ____________.” You fill in the blank! God bless!

Part 1 in a series on the Names of God
Sunday Sermon by Pastor Chuck Constant
The foundation for our faith to receive our healing is the very same foundation as for receiving our forgiveness – the Atonement of Christ. Because Jesus died for all of our sins, therefore forgiveness is available to all of us. In the same way, Jesus died for all our sicknesses, so healing is available for all of us (Psalm 103:1-3, Isaiah 53:4-6, Matthew 8:16-17, 1Peter 2:24). Jesus took the CURSE of SICKNESS for us on the Cross, so that the BLESSING of HEALING might be released to us in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:13-14). Healing is a covenant benefit that belongs to us in Christ. Knowing that healing is in the Atonement settles the issue of God's will to heal, and so provides a firm foundation of faith for you to receive your healing, as faith begins when the will of God is known. One of the greatest proofs that Healing is in the Atonement is in Exodus 15:22-26, when God revealed His Covenant Name, His unchanging nature: Jehovah Rophe (the Lord is our Healer), at the Waters of Marah. Exodus 15 gives one of the great pictures of healing in the Atonement: (1) God reveals WHO He is – He is our Healer, (2) He also reveals HOW He heals us – through a TREE (a picture of the Cross). "Himself bore our SINS in His own body on the TREE - by whose stripes you were HEALED" (1Peter 2:24). God demonstrated He is our Healer, by healing all of Israel from sickness through a TREE. The bitter waters of Marah represent the bitter waters of humanity because of sin. The waters of the human heart and body have been made bitter (SICK) and need healing. God's remedy for this sickness was a divinely ordained TREE (a picture of Christ on the Cross), which was cast into the bitter waters (Christ was sent into the waters of humanity), and it made those waters sweet. The TREE soaked up all the bitterness in the waters and released sweetness. Likewise JESUS on the Cross took on Himself all the bitterness (sins and sicknesses) of humanity, and released the sweetness of healing to us. When you receive the atoning work of the Cross by faith into the bitter waters of your heart and body, then your bitterness and sickness is taken away by the Cross, and it releases to you the sweetness of healing. SEE Jesus and RECEIVE your healing. Receive the TREE (Christ's atoning work) into the bitter waters of your heart and body. Let Jesus soak up your sickness of soul and body and let Him release His sweet healing power into you. Receive His words, as He says to you: "I am the LORD your HEALER."
