When we say the name “God”, have we assumed too quickly that we know what we mean? We use that word quite regularly, without much strain or prolonged consideration, as if the meaning of the word were self-evident. But what if you had to explain – indeed, translate – the word “God” into a language that had no such concept? That would force you, I think, to really reckon with what you mean and what you assume when you use that word: the name, “God”. That is not merely an intellectual exercise; that was in fact the experience of the 16th and 17th Century Jesuit missionary, Matteo Ricci. His primary mission was to China, where he strove to bring and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who often had not only a different language but also a different imaginary landscape than that which European Christians were accustomed to.In our episode today, the eminent scholar of the Sino-Western Exchange, Professor Anthony Clark, talks with me about Matteo Ricci, evangelization, inculturation, and the legacy of dialogue. Anthony Clark is Professor of Chinese History at Whitworth University, where he also holds the Edward B. Lindaman Endowed Chair, and he directs the Oxford Lewis-Tolkien Program, the Rome History and Culture Program, the area of Asian Studies, and the Study in China Program. He joins me today, in studio, while visiting Notre Dame to deliver a lecture titled “In the Footsteps of Dialogue: China and the Legacy of Matteo Ricci.” Follow-up Resources:Find out more about Professor Anthony Clark at his website: https://anthonyeclark.squarespace.com/China's Saints: Catholic Martyrdom During the Qing (1644–1911), by Anthony Clark“China's Religious Awakening after Mao,” by Ian Johnson, article in Church Life Journal“Religion in China, with Ian Johnson,” podcast episode via Church Life TodayChurch Life Today is a partnership between the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and OSV Podcasts from Our Sunday Visitor. O brother! The name of God is of astonishing power. (But this name) the Lord Himself makes it heard (to a fortunate person). In this life full of conflicts, that person attains the name of God who remains in the presence of the Guru. 1. Stay.O brother! It cannot be told at what price the name of God can be obtained and how powerful this name is. Those people who have fixed their mind on the name of God are the fortunate ones. The person who accepts the advice of the Guru who never gets tired, that person constantly establishes the thought of the qualities of the Lord (within himself). But the Lord gives this thought only to the one on whom He Himself bestows. 1.O brother! We do every work of our lives only with the support of ego, (so when we think about it in our) mind (with wheat), then because of this ego, we are completely foolish. This ego can be removed (from within us) only by the grace of the Guru. (The Guru also unites) him on whom the Lord Himself bestows His grace. 2.(O brother! This worldly wealth of Maya (creates) great ego (in the mind of man). And, a man who remains immersed in ego does not attain respect (in the presence of the Lord). O brother! Leaving aside ego, one always remains in spiritual bliss. O brother! I, taking the advice of the Guru, keep praising and glorifying that ever-lasting Lord. 3.O brother! That Creator Himself creates (the entire creation); apart from Him there is no other (with such a state). The man whom the Creator connects (with His) ever-lasting Name, that man appears (in the remembrance of the Name). O Nanak! The person who meditates on the Name always remains in spiritual bliss (both in this world and) in the next world. 4.8.

The Name of God: "I AM"- | Exodus 3:1-15 | The Names of God by Hunter Bible Church
Acclaiming the Name of God

This is message 6 in The Power of His Name series. 2 Chronicles 6:12-42 Solomon's prayer at the Temple's dedication reveals the power of calling on God's name. He acknowledges God's greatness, His covenant faithfulness, and His nearness to hear from heaven. As he prays over seven specific situations, Solomon repeatedly emphasizes confessing and knowing God's name as the key to answered prayer. Whether seeking justice, restoration, guidance, or deliverance, he demonstrates that God's response is tied to a reverence for His name. His prayer culminates in God's visible glory filling the Temple, affirming that He hears and answers when His people call upon Him. We can learn a lot about the nature of God from his Divine Name revealed in Scripture. When God said to Moses, “I am who I am,” this was a revelation of a name as well as a refusal of a name. Fr. Mike explains how this mystery reveals truths about God: he is infinitely above all things; we cannot comprehend him, yet he draws close to us. This Divine Name expresses the steadfast, faithful, unchanging love of God for his people, even when we betray and abandon him. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 205-211. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. What is the name of God? Are we supposed to use God's personal name? Why does God use different names and titles for Himself?
In this podventure, we discuss the episode “The Vow,” in which Jessie sets Donna down the path of anxiety over her parents' relationship after they take the ‘first step' towards divorce. When Donna walks in on her parents arguing, she and Jimmy decide to join forces in convincing their parents to sign a contract stating that they will never separate while Donna is in D.C. with her dad and Jimmy is at home with his mom. But what they don't know is that, in a way, her parents already have signed a contract. A contract before God. Also, romantically charged arguments, leaning on the fourth wall, and correlation does not equal causation.

Everything we do should be done for God's glory, so it should be done in a godly manner. No matter how great of a task you may accomplish, if it is not done in love, it does not glorify God. We should not view our accomplishments as a way to earn recognition for ourselves, but rather as a way to bring glory to God.
It is a sacred and solemn matter to swear an oath or take a vow in the name of God. Today, R.C. Sproul explains why we should take it seriously when we invoke our Creator's holy name.
