Jesse Moynihan is a cartoonist, storyboard artist, and writer who has worked on Adventure Time, Midnight Gospel and his own critically acclaimed graphic novel series, Forming. Our conversation gets into Jesse's roots in the Philadelphia experimental music scene, the connection of prog rock to animation, the meaning of visual noise, Ai anxiety in art and music, the wackness of '00s New Atheism, and Jesse's newest personal project, Jesus 2.

The second part of the Jesse Moynihan interview! Jesse Moynihan went from incredibly weird underground cartoonist to "household name" when his friend and colleague Tom Herpich suggested Pendleton Ward hired Jesse to join as a storyboarder/writer/artist/art director at the end of the first season of the soon-to-be legendary animated show Adventure Time. On the side of the enormous body of work that is Adventure Time (currently on HBO max), Jesse has also made his own, weird, spiritual, slice-of-life comic about bickering cosmic gods, Forming. With his brother Justin he's released the short Manly on youtube, via Cartoon Hangover. And he's been art director on the beautiful show Midnight Gospel (Netflix). Recently Jesse presented an NFT project on his instagram account @jmoyns. The ensuing debate showed that some of his regular fans saw NFTs as a betrayal of the integrity Jesse had shown through his entire career - and with great disappointment comes great interviews! I jumped on the opportunity to hear Jesse explain his thoughts on NFTs and their place in the current art scene, as I can easily say that Jesse has never been an artist known for taking "the easy route". So, what's his thoughts on the climate impact of NFTs, why he stayed away from OpenSea even though it could have meant a bigger profit, what he sees as the future for art, on building a new fanbase from the ground up, and what he wants to do next. I'm very proud to give you this 3,5 hour talk with one of the most awesome creators I know of! For practical reasons this talk has been cut in two. We return with another monumental episode - our longest ep yet! And its for good reason too, as we have a deep discussion of the Lemongrab epic "The Mountain" with pitch-perfect guest Craig Shay. This episode is one of the most surreal episodes of the series, and is packed with symbolism that we dive right into! Can't wait to tackle more Jesse Moynihan & Sam Alden eps in the future, this one was recent highlight! Listen to Craig's bands Cold Wrecks & Answering Machine! Two of my favorite brothers join me for a cannonball run through the past. We get into where they grew up, the origins of music, Philadelphia time at New Planet collective. And get a load of their amazing band names from days of future past: Anal Sausage, Hiroshima Nagasaki, and Make a Rising. Jesse was storyboarder/writer on the epic cartoon "Adventure Time" and art director on "Midnight Gospel." Justin is an inspired rock climber, woodworker, musician, artist, and he's single and ready to mingle(at least the time of writing this). www.makearising.bandcamp.com Bradford's Patreon: www.patreon.com/bradfordtrojan

Conversation Parade: An Adventure Time Podcast – Infinite Guest Podcast Network
Who are your favorite C-listers on Adventure Time? That’s the question hosts Open Mike Eagle and John Moe grapple with this week as they enumerate their top five characters who have appeared on more than one episode but are far from being the leading players. Will Tiffany make the list? How about Shelby the worm? Then, Mike interviews storyboard artist Jesse Moynihan about their shared love of Magic Man, creating Lemongrab without knowing the character would last more than one episode, and the flexibility of Finn.
On this week's episode, Derek and Andy W. are back with a Publisher Spotlight, and this time the focus is on Nobrow Press and their fall 2014 releases. This relatively small, UK-based publisher may be off of many readers' radar, but they put out a lot of great books, as this week's show will attest. First, the guys discuss Jesse Moynihan's Forming II, the follow up 2011's strange, whacked-out creation narrative Forming. They are fascinated with the myth that Moynihan has created, and they especially love the artist's sense of humor. Next, Derek and Andy move on to Moonhead and the Music Machine, a new graphic novel by Andrew Rae. They highlight Rae's clean, vivid art style, and they speculate on whether or not this book was intended for a younger -- or at least all-age -- readership. Next on the guys' plate is Roman Muradov's (In a Sense) Lost and Found. This is a striking, Kafkaesque narrative with an uneven, dream-like quality. The intended murkiness of the tale may complement the dark palette that Muradov uses, as the guys find many of his images difficult to decipher. Bianca Bagnarelli's Fish is the next book they discuss, a short story -- perhaps more of an emotional vignette -- that is part of the 17x23 series, Nobrow's graphic short story project designed to introduce young artists to a wider readership. Andy and Derek then move on to Corinne Maier and Anne Simon's graphic biography, Marx, which looks at the (surprisingly bourgeois) life behind the famous philosopher/economist, and then they look at Behold! The Dinosaurs!, Dustin Harbin's beautiful concertina that challenges the guys' definition of "comics." Finally, your tireless hosts look at Jamie Coe's Art Schooled -- one of the most sophisticated narrative styles of the week, and definitely Derek's favorite -- and then another graphic biography, Robert Moses: The Master Builder of New York City. There are eight books discussed in all, and this show has to be extra long this week to get in everything. Come and enjoy the creamy filling that is The Comics Alternative!

After a week off, we're back with a new epsiode of Graphic Policy Radio. This week we have guest Jesse Moynihan. Jesse Moynihan grew up outside of Philadelphia where he spent most of his time drawing and playing music. In 1997 he dropped out of Pratt Institute, got a film degree at Temple University and decided to concentrate on comics. His work has been featured in The Believer, MOME, Vice, Arthur, the Philadelphia Weekly, and various independent anthologies. In 2005 he received a Xeric grant for self publishing. In 2009 he released his first graphic novel, Follow Me through Bodega. His current mystical, sci-fi epic, Forming is published by Nobrow Press in London. Jesse works as a storyboard artist for the Cartoon Network show, Adventure Time. So, join us this Monday and chat with us and our guest!
Pendleton Ward (creator of Adventure time) and Jesse Moynihan (adventure time writer, creator of forming) join the DTFH and talk about many beautiful and wonderous things.
Jesse Moynihan is a storyboard artist/writer on the amazing Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. He's also an amazing comic artist and has been making his own comics for years. On last week's Beginnings episode, we talked about how his past has opened him up to new ways of seeing the world, and on this week's Field Guide, we talk to Jesse about his latest collection of comics Forming vol.1, now out on Nobrow Press!
Jesse Moynihan is a bit of a Renaissance man. He's a storyboard artist/writer on the amazing Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. He's also a comic artist who's been making hilarious, weird and thoughtful comics for years, and his latest collection Forming vol. 1 was just published on Nobrow Press. Jesse's also a musician and plays in the experimental pop group Make a Rising, who have two fantastic albums with a third on the way. Jesse sat down with us in the Wrestling Team apartment a few weeks ago while he was in town for an indie comics convention and: Jesse talked about chilling with The Dead Milkmen! He also told us about how his father's Christian visions and his mother's involvement in Aum Shinrikyo made him more receptive to the world. We even discussed David Lynch's contradictions! All this and mooooooooooore!
