ic is an adjective that means very dry or having little moisture. The Greek word keros (ZEE ros) means dry. This is the basis of our word of the day which has been with us since the early 20th century. Here's an example of xeric in use: The xeric conditions didn't make our vacation much fun. I like warm weather as much as anyone, but it would be nice if we had at least a little rain for the month we were there.

Why was Voltes V banned in the Philippines during Martial Law? Concerns about the effects of violence on children, said the official statement. Perhaps the mecha anime's theme of young resistance fighters battling an oppressive regime hit too close to home for the censors, others opined. Stories have power, as we discuss with Laurianne Uy, a storyboard artist and comic creator from Manila, Philippines now based in LA whose work has appeared in film, TV, print, and online. She started drawing comics about her favorite characters in 1997 and also served as art editor for her high school and college newspapers. Laur went on to major in History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in and wrote her honors thesis on manga and female representation. In 2012, she won a Xeric grant and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for her self-published young adult comic series "Polterguys." She successfully deployed her lifelong passion for drawing and storytelling to a career in animation by 2017. She is currently a Story Artist for Skydance Animation, and has also worked as a Storyboard Artist for DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Titmouse, Wild Canary Animation, Activision, and Soapbox Films. She has worked on storyboard animation for properties such as Star Trek, Madagascar, Cleopatra in Space, Deathstroke, and Puss in Boots. She gets real about being lost in her twenties, finding her way back to her first love of drawing, turning down movie offers to adapt her comics, how the manga and anime fandom went mainstream, as well as universal advice on the dangers of burnout and the importance of boundaries between our personal and professional lives. This episode is dedicated to all artists making their voices heard and standing up for truth in darkness... and to all our Filipino listeners who showed up at the polls on May 9. Representation matters, as Laur said. Stories matter, too -- and we are still writing our collective story as a nation. We hope this episode (recorded in 2021) brings you joy in these times. --- Follow Laur on Twitter (@Laurbits) or visit her website laurbits.com View her portfolio at https://laurbits.weebly.com/ Read her YA graphic novel "Polterguys" at laurbits.com/Polterguys or polterguys.laurbits.com --- Other topics discussed: Voltes V https://www.spot.ph/entertainment/movies-music-tv/83558/voltes-v-martial-law-explainer-a4362-20200913-lfrm Philippine Animation Industry https://businessmirror.com.ph/2018/04/02/animation-and-the-filipino/ https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/FilCartoons https://www.animationcareerreview.com/articles/top-20-cities-worldwide-animation-careers Intellectual Property Suits https://bleedingcool.com/comics/comic-books-and-the-law-talking-with-michael-lovitz-about-ips-and-sdcc/ https://www.cbr.com/unpacking-the-kirby-reclamation-case/ Oni Press https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni_Pre Penny Arcade https://nwasianweekly.com/2014/01/lifes-game-leap-faith-turns-comic-strip-successful-gaming-company/ https://www.geekwire.com/2016/penny-arcades-robert-khoo-steps-15-years-helm/ --- Music: “Neon Laser Horizon” by Kevin MacLeod (imcompetech.com) licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License Sound Editing by franticsong Like what you heard? Natwarlal was the most successful con man in India's history and is still revered by many as something of a folk hero. Over a career of several decades, he mastered forgery, impersonation, and social engineering to pull off scams that are too crazy to believe including selling the Taj Mahal to foreign tourists on three separate occasions. To this day his name is used as a verb for anybody that's trying to pull off a scam.Pete is joined this week by Rebecca Kaplan. Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:02:41 - Setup of interview 00:04:04 - Interview with Pat Palermo 01:06:50 - Wrap up 01:07:33 - Contact us Pat Palermo is an artist and Xeric Award-winning cartoonist living and working in Brooklyn. In fact, the intersection of “living and working” is the subject matter of his new series coming out from AdHouse Books, LIVE/WORK. The first issue of this magazine-sized comic came out last month, and it's an ensemble narrative concerning the exploits of New York artists as they try to make their marks in the art world, while at the same time worrying about their living arrangements. In this episode of the interview series, Derek talks with Pat about the origins of his new series, how it began as a self-published endeavor, the autobiographical links embedded among his ensemble cast, and his thoughts on writing in a more realistic or slice-of-life mode – what's been called before on The Comics Alternative, verite dessinée. Along the way Pat discusses his own non-comics art endeavors, his Galveston Diary Project, and the ways in which his work in fine arts informs his cartooning…and vice versa.

Imagine Wanting Only This (Pantheon Books) When Kristen Radtke was in college, the sudden death of a beloved uncle and, not long after his funeral, the sight of an abandoned mining town marked the beginning moments of a lifelong fascination with ruins and with people and places left behind. Over time, this fascination deepened until it triggered a journey around the world in search of ruined places. Now, in this genre-smashing graphic memoir, she leads us through deserted towns in the American Midwest, Italian villas, islands in the Philippines, New York City, and the delicate passageways of the human heart. At once narrative and factual, historical and personal, Radtke's stunning illustrations and piercing text never shy away from the big questions: Why are we here, and what will we leave behind? Praise for Imagine Wanting Only This: “Cities, ambitions, romances, and bodies come to ruin before our eyes, as Kristen Radtke invites us, in her beautifully understated way, to be disturbed, fascinated, and yes, even attracted to that ruin. A remarkable bildungsroman!” —Eula Biss, author of On Immunity “Kristen Radtke leads us through a bleak and beautifully crafted story of heart and heartbreak—creation, connection, decay, and loss. Imagine Wanting Only This is challenging and inspiring.” —Ellen Forney, New York Times bestselling author of Marbles “Kristen Radtke’s Imagine Wanting Only This doesn’t tell a single story but a chorus of histories, personal and familial and historical, and invents its own marvelous language for their telling—a language forged from interior thought and visual imagination, bringing together words and illustration in continually surprising and moving ways. The voice in these pages is eloquent in so many ways at once, like a shape that exists in three dimensions rather than two, and it’s utterly singular: visually alive, attentive to details, self-questioning and tender as it surveys variously haunted terrains of heart and landscape. Radtke’s world is so immersive, and so sensitively conjured, that once I entered the sketched chamber of her pages, I didn’t want to leave again—or even pause for breath—until I reached the end.” —Leslie Jamison, author of The Empathy Exams "Riveting and glorious. A book of sorrow filtered through intellect. In Kristen Radtke's hands, nonfiction becomes poetry. A tremendous achievement.” —Tom Hart, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Rosalie Lightning Kristen Radtke is a writer and illustrator based in Brooklyn. Comics Manifest | Inspiring Interviews with Influential Creators in Comics
Jason Shiga is an Eisner, Ignatz, and Xeric award winning cartoonist, known as the Crazy Genius of comics he is the creator of the comics Fleep, Meanwhile, Empire State (a love story or not), and the graphic novel Demon.
Derek talks with Marnie Galloway about the publication of her first graphic novel, In the Sounds and Seas. This beautiful hardbound text was released earlier this month from One Peace Books, but her work on this project has a long and interesting history. The first third of the narrative was a 2012 Xeric Award winner -- and in the final year that the Xeric grant was given to comics artists -- and the entire story was originally released in three self-published volumes, the final one coming out in early 2016. Marnie discusses with Derek her decision to complete her story in this manner, even after receiving a contract from One Peace for the collected edition. They also talk about the challenges of telling a compelling story through a wordless text, the question of her art as visual poetry, and the various literary references woven into her narrative. Along the way, they take the time to discuss her various other comics and why she particularly enjoys writing in the short-story form. In the Sounds and Seas debuted at this year's Toronto Comic Arts Festival, so Marnie shares her experiences at the event along with the thrills of being able to showcase her new book to such a major audience. This is an impressive work from a young creator whom we are sure to hear more from in the coming months. Check out Marnie's website to discover more of her art!
On this episode of The Comics Alternative Interviews Andy and Derek are pleased to have on the show Liz Plourde and Randy Michaels, the creative team behind the new self-published series, How I Made the World. Liz and Randy are winners of a 2012 Xeric Award — the last year, in fact, that the Xeric Foundation gave out grants for self-publishing comic books – and they share their experiences applying for the grant, complete with last-minute postage anxieties, and how the award helped to propel their project both financially and for marketing purposes. The Two Guys ask them about the genesis of the series, the protagonist's links to Liz's own life experiences, Randy's artistic inspirations, how the two of them actually met, their marketing strategies for the title, the reasons behind their choosing to self publish, and what the two of them might have in store for future issues of the series. (They already have a lot of material for issue #2 of How I Made the World!) At one point, Derek goes off the deep end with his in-depth Freudian reading of the issue's core story, “The Monster,” but Andy chooses to stay in more formalistic territory…while both Liz and Randy sit back, amused at their academic antics. How I Made the World is a wonderful new title that might fly under the radar of many readers, which is all the more reason to listen to this engaging interview with the creators. It should inspire you to go out and get a copy.
