When you're creating your world and bringing it into a story, how much do you let show? Guest John Hartness joins us to discuss balancing the off-page and on-page elements, and how that balance might shift based on what kind of a world you're working in and what sort of a story you're telling. How do you ensure that the worldbuilding serves a purpose and serves the characters? In this episode, you'll also get a peek behind the publishing curtain! John discusses running Falstaff Books, a publisher known for making space for authors at "the weird kids' table." That ethos translates into his work as an editor and publisher, and it's led him to think and talk about worldbuilding in different ways than when he's writing his own works! Sidebar: It's Hugo Award nomination season! If you're a nominating sort of person and you enjoyed the podcast in 2023, we'd love your consideration for Best Fancast. [Transcript TK] Our Guest: John G. Hartness is a teller of tales, a righter of wrong, defender of ladies' virtues, and some people call him Maurice, for he speaks of the pompatus of love. He is also the award-winning author of the urban fantasy series The Black Knight Chronicles, the Bubba the Monster Hunter comedic horror series, the Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter dark fantasy series, and many other projects. He is also a cast member of the role-playing podcast Authors & Dragons, where a group of comedy, fantasy, and horror writers play Dungeons & Dragons. Very poorly. In 2016, John teamed up with a group of other publishing industry ne'er-do-wells and founded Falstaff Books, a small press dedicated to publishing the best of genre fiction's “misfit toys.” Falstaff Books has since published over 50 titles with authors ranging from first-timers to NY Times bestsellers, with no signs of slowing down any time soon. In his copious free time John enjoys long walks on the beach, rescuing kittens from trees and playing Magic: the Gathering. John's pronouns are he/him.

Welcome everyone to this next episode of All things writing. This year I was fortunate to be a vendor at ConGregate 2021. It was my first time back in the convention waters in a long time and it was really nice to know that we are getting back to the regular routine of things. When we go to Cons, authors do spend time talking with our colleagues about what is going on in the business. I lucked out to get a spot next to my next guest.Welcome to the show, Mr. Patrick Dugan! Join us as we talk about all kinds of things including; How did your early writing experiences shape you?You read a lot as a child. What would you say was the biggest influence during that time and why? What did those early influences give you?Tell us about “The Darkest Storm” series. You also wrote “Fate and Flux”, which is steampunk. I am fascinated how connected SciFi and steampunk are connected in many ways. And, for that measure, paranormal thrillers can be added to that mix. Would you consider yourself to be multi-genre?You mentioned Fallstaff Publishing and John Hartness. In the “about” section of your website. How did that relationship start? For people looking into finding the right publisher, what would you say are the most important considerations?I know that at the Con we were at, you gave a discussion on how to use tools for helping you in your writing career. I think we are sometimes awash in tools and a new one comes out every few minutes to solve all of our problems. What would you say are your favorites?Want to know more? PAY CREATORS. PERIOD. It's a tale as old as time, folks... the House of Mouse has been refusing to pay royalties to the great Alan Dean Foster for his many novelizations of Star Wars (including 1976's Star Wars: A New Hope), Alien, etc. In the entertainment industry, this is what's known as "a d*** move." In other news, Audible (owned by Amazon) is pushing a ridiculous return policy that steals money from the pockets of authors. Fans gotta rise up... to discuss this, we brought in author & publisher John G. Hartness, he of the often-colorful hair and always-colorful language. Listen & learn what we can all do to make the entertainment industry more fair to the people who make the stuff we love.Verge Article on Alan Dean Foster/Disney: https://www.theverge.com/2020/11/19/21578621/disney-alan-dean-foster-royalties-copyright-lawMessage from Mary Robinette Kowal/SFWA: https://www.sfwa.org/2020/11/18/disney-must-pay/Susan May Blog - https://www.susanmaywriter.net/single-post/audiblegate-the-incredible-story-of-missing-salesPetition from Writer’s Guild: https://www.authorsguild.org/industry-advocacy/sign-our-letter-and-tell-audible-to-stop-charging-authors-for-returnsWriter Beware: https://accrispin.blogspot.com/File 770: http://file770.com/how-audibles-returns-policy-exploits-writers/Cory Doctorow: https://twitter.com/doctorow/status/1323469836941340672Scribd ($10/mo plan read or listen to as much as you want): https://www.scribd.com/Audiobooks for free in return for reviews:https://bookriot.com/11-websites-find-free-audiobooks-online/https://www.howtogeek.com/354016/8-places-you-can-find-free-audiobooks-legally/Find John Hartness:https://www.patreon.com/johnhartness/https://johnhartness.com/https://www.facebook.com/groups/johnhartnessbookshttps://www.facebook.com/groups/falstaffmisfitsFalstaff Books - free shipping through Dec 7!: http://falstaffbooks.com/Subscribe to Glitchy Pancakes on your favorite podcast app, and please leave a review if you like what we're doing.
