Easily the heaviest film we've covered in the Lau Kar Leung project and very much an atypical Lau Kar Leung film and can be seen as an elegy towards the Shaw Brothers studio, which would shut down the following year. This film is based off of Chinese folklore in the Song dynasty and features great performances and perhaps my favorite fight in the entire Lau Kar Leung filmography. Donnie Yen's 2011 reinvention of the one-armed swordsman, Wu Xia, does indeed have a sword and someone with one arm; it also dazzles with the unbridled charisma of a late, great Jimmy Wang Yu. Crisp martial arts with only a hint of Donnie's artificial speed tampering makes this some of the most enjoyable and visceral choreography of Donnie's recent works. If only Donnie would push the fast forward button on his long-suffering dramatic moments. Also featuring action icon Kara Hui alongside Donnie and Jimmy Wang Yu, the bona fides are there, and Takeshi Kaneshiro brings a dark, brooding noir to his grizzly but handsome flawed detective. Doesn't quite know what it wants to be but parts of it are truly great, skip to the good bits with us below:

If you combined Police Academy, Stripes and My Lucky Stars you would probably get something very similar to 1988's action/comedy The Inspector Wears Skirts (aka Top Squad/Tyrant Flower). Sibelle Hu is tasked with training Hong Kongs first all female commando unit 'The Banshee Squad'. An ensemble cast make up the group (Sandra Ng, Kara Hui, Regina Kent and many more) as they learn about teamwork, friendship and the best way to get revenge on a lecherous lothario. Cynthia Rothrock provides additional hardcore training and theres even a dance break in a rollerskating rink. With plenty of recognisable names and stunt choreography by Jacky Chan himself, this film puts the slap in slapstick.

Aspiring filmmakers should definitely tune into this episode of the Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast, as I talk to two up-and-coming, talented, London-based directors Matthias Hoene and James Nunn, who are both making waves internationally with their own action films. Firstly, I talk to the director Matthias Hoene about his new film, Enter the Warrior's Gate (aka Warrior's Gate), a Chinese-European co-production written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. The time-traveling wuxia fantasy stars Dave Bautista, Uriah Shelton, and the Chinese actors Ni Ni, Mark Chao, Francis Ng and Kara Hui. If you are reading this in the States, you can watch the film right now exclusively on DirecTV. My second guest is James Nunn, who has become a highly sought-after director after being launched onto the UK indie scene with his first directorial effort, the acclaimed thriller Tower Block (2012), co-directed with Ronnie Thompson. He has since collaborated with top UK fighting star Scott Adkins on two films: Green Street 3: Never Back Down (2013), and Eliminators (2016), which was James' first film under contract with WWE Studios. His most recent movie, The Marine 5: Battleground (2017), featured a number of WWE wrestlers and is available to watch right now on digital and Blu-ray. We discuss his earliest film memories, working with Scott Adkins, how to make a convincing action movie in London, and the impact piracy is having on the film industry.

First up from film The Hong Kong International Film Festival, or HKIFF, is a platform for filmmakers, film professionals and filmgoers from all over the world to launch and experience new film works. It is committed to discover talents and introduce films to the Asian market. The star-studded event opened with glamour on Monday. Liu Yan has more. Reporter On March 24th, the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival and the 10th annual Hong Kong Entertainment Expo kicked off with a glitzy red carpet event. Featuring the leading names in Asia's film, television, music and digital entertainment industries, the Entertainment Expo houses nine multimedia events, including the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market, Asia Film Awards and the Hong Kong Asian Pop Music Festival. Actor Leon Lai is the ambassador of the expo this year. During the opening ceremony, he walked the red carpet briefly and stood next to Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Leung Chun Ying. The glitzy red carpet of the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival soon followed. This year, the opening films were both Hong Kong productions; "Aberdeen" and "The Midnight After". (SB1, movie clip from "Aberdeen") "Aberdeen," a drama about a Hong Kong family, reunites director Pang Ho-Cheung with his favorite leading lady, Miriam Yeung - who worked with him on his hit films "Love in the Puff" and the sequel, "Love in the Buff." Louise Koo, star of the film, jokingly said he was worried about whether Lee Man Kwai, his daughter in the film, would show up to the festival. (SB2, Koo, male, Chinese) "The thing I worry about the most tonight is that, I invited my 'daughter' to go with me to the after party tonight. She said she needs to think about it.She has school tomorrow; I said, 'Just say yes.'" His co-star, Gigi Leung, has something else to celebrate. She is turning 37 on March 25th. Though Leung has to spend her birthday working, she hoped she could spend at least some of her birthday with a loved one. (SB3, Leung, female, Chinese) "I hope at midnight, I can spend (my birthday) with my husband. Either he joins us, or I leave earlier. We can celebrate together. " "The Midnight After" also opened the show. The film is a horror-comedy about a group of minibus passengers who find themselves in the middle of a strange pandemic in Hong Kong and stars Simon Yam, Kara Hui and Janice Man. This annual movie event runs from March 24th to April 7th. Dedicated to the discovery and promotion of creativity in the art and culture of film, the festival will show 300 films from 56 countries and regions. The lineup promises to be as eclectic as ever, with an ode to local films.
