Recent public comments from Governor Greg Abbott, House Public Education Committee Chairman Dr. Brad Buckley, and State Representative Gina Hinojosa signal growing bipartisan support for ending the use of the STAAR test, a long-criticized component of Texas public education. However, simply rebranding STAAR or replacing it with another one-size-fits-all test misses the point. Texas students need a more effective, adaptive assessment system, one that tracks learning growth throughout the school year and helps educators identify and close gaps in real time, rather than relying on a high-stakes, end-of-year exam with no sustainable plan for remediation. We jumped right in this week because most of the Texas Impact staff stayed up late Wednesday night to watch SB 2, the Texas Senate's school voucher bill, be brought before the House. There were some great and no-so-great conversations between legislators about the impact of a bill that appropriates a billion dollars that could go to public schools to privately run entities, and many amendments that aimed to fix issues with the bill be ultimately tabled with little to no debate. We are tired, we are cranky, but we are glad to have Bee Moorhead, Texas Impact's Executive Director, with us to parse through what happened Wednesday night, how we got here and what conversations might look like in the aftermath of the passing of SB2—Spoiler Alert: they may be awkward, but nevertheless important. I'm very pleased to welcome Sammy Sanchez back to the program for a record-setting fourth appearance on the Badass Records podcast. And none of our chats have been brief ones.Sammy initially came around for Episode No. 44, in which we discussed a few of his favorite records: Pink Floyd's Animals (1977), Rain Dogs (1985) by Tom Waits, and LCD Soundsystem's This Is Happening (2010).For his second appearance, we tackled the Tom Waits discography, and that was super-fun and very educational. On his last go-round, we unearthed all of the Beck albums, and I think we're both glad we did that. This time, though, Sammy took the suggestion lead, and we decided we'd examine the studio albums by one of his all-time-favorite bands, Radiohead. If you're keeping score at home, those'er these:Pablo Honey (1993)The Bends (1995)OK Computer (1997)Kid A (2000)Amnesiac (2001)Hail to the Thief (2003)In Rainbows (2007)The King of Limbs (2011)A Moon-Shaped Pool (2016)Sammy's one of the most intelligent guys I've ever met, and this rich conversation we had was full of gems, i.e. the reminder (for me) that he longs to one day be a contestant on Jeopardy!.In the meantime, he's continuing to launch a new career, set aside a little nest egg, prepare for some quasi-upcoming travels, and possibly start a podcast of his own.Anyway, thanks to Sammy for his time and energy. And thanks to you for checking out the show.p.s. I meant Yo, Flaco, not Yo la Tengo.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained in this episode. In this episode of the Dover Download podcast, Deputy City Manager Christopher Parker chats with Darren Winham, the Economic Development Director for the Town of Exeter. They discuss the challenges and opportunities of economic development in Exeter, which operates under the SB2 form of government. Winham emphasizes the importance of building consensus and engaging the voting public, especially older residents, for zoning changes and other initiatives. He highlights the region's housing affordability crisis as the biggest economic development issue facing the Seacoast. Winham also talks about Exeter's efforts to revitalize its downtown and attract more dining and entertainment options, transforming the town into a "foodie" destination. The conversation touches on the collaborative nature of economic development across Seacoast communities and the importance of considering factors like infrastructure capacity when recruiting new businesses. In This Week in Dover History, we learn about Dover's transition from a town to a city government, with Andrew Pierce becoming the first mayor. This change aimed to improve municipal services like fire departments, water works, and public schools.

The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: The 3rd called special session of the 88th Texas Legislature began today with school choice being the biggest item on the call from Governor Abbott. Today, Senator Creighton released SB2 which will give a clue as to how the Senate will try to gain (buy?) the votes of those opposed to school choice. Essentially it is a another huge money handout to traditional, socialist-model, government school districts. Many of the pro-socialist model, anti-school choice people claim the state only spends about $6100 per student, the basic allotment, and that claim is often echoed in the press. It is a lie. Texas spends over $12,000 per student and over $15,000 per student if facility costs are included. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.In another vile and bizarre move by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, aided by Leftwing press, people across the state are being linked to Nazi's, Hitler, and the Hamas attack on Israel because an objectionable person was seen going into and coming out of a Texas business. It is so bad that Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick called this morning for Speaker Phelan to resign. After the House Managers doxxed him last week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he is filing criminal complaints against them for violating state law. Gov. Newsom backs bill to place limits on where people can carry a gun in public Following up on his calls for more gun reform following the mass shootings in Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park, California Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday stood by Democratic lawmakers and gun control advocates to lend his support for SB2 — a proposed bill to strengthen the state's restrictions on who can carry a firearm in public. “We have more work to do,” Governor Newsom said of gun control laws, “And this is part of this effort.” The measure – which was written by... Governor Newsom is adding his voice to the call for a new gun safety bill for California. Newsom joined the state Attorney General and a large group of lawmakers and gun safety advocates today to urge the passage of new legislation. The bill in question is SB2, written by State Senator Anthony Portantino, Democrat from Burbank. It would update California's law that allows certain people to obtain permits to carry a concealed weapon. This was made necessary by last year's U.S. Supreme Court decision that tossed out New York's similar law and set a new standard for gun control laws to meet, invalidating California's existing law. That has left many of California's other gun safety laws in jeopardy, too. For more, KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern, news anchor Patti Reising, and news anchor Bret Burkhart spoke with State Senator Anthony Portantino, the author of this bill.

Searching for compact objects in the single-lined spectroscopic binaries of the young Galactic cluster NGC 6231 by G. Banyard et al. on Sunday 16 October Recent evolutionary computations predict that a few percent of massive OB stars in binary systems should have a dormant BH companion. Despite several reported X-ray quiet OB+BH systems over the last couple of years, finding them with certainty remains challenging. These have great importance as they can be gravitational wave (GW) source progenitors, and are landmark systems in constraining supernova kick physics. This work aims to characterise the hidden companions to the single-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB1s) in the B star population of the young open Galactic cluster NGC 6231 to find candidate systems for harbouring compact object companions. With the orbital solutions for each SB1 previously constrained, we applied Fourier spectral disentangling to multi-epoch optical VLT/FLAMES spectra of each target to extract a potential signature of a faint companion, and to identify newly disentangled double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s). For targets where the disentangling does not reveal any signature of a stellar companion, we performed atmospheric and evolutionary modelling on the primary to obtain constraints on the unseen companion. Seven newly classified SB2 systems with mass ratios down to near 0.1 were identified. From the remaining targets, for which no faint companion could be extracted from the spectra, four are found to have companion masses in the predicted mass ranges of neutron stars (NSes) and BHes. Two of these have companion masses between 1 and 3.5 $M_{odot}$, making them potential hosts of NSes (or lower mass main sequence stars). The other two are between 2.5 to 8 $M_{odot}$ and 1.6 and 26 $M_{odot}$, respectively, and so are identified as candidates for harbouring BH companions. However, unambiguous identification of these systems as X-ray quiet compact object harbouring binaries requires follow up observations. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07149v1

Establishing the accuracy of asteroseismic mass and radius estimates of giant stars II Revised stellar masses and radii for KIC 8430105 by Jeppe Sinkbæk Thomsen et al. on Wednesday 12 October Asteroseismic scaling relations can provide high-precision measurements of mass and radius for red giant (RG) stars displaying solar-like oscillations. Their accuracy can be validated and potentially improved using independent and accurate observations of mass, radius, effective temperature and metallicity. We seek to achieve this using long period SB2 eclipsing binaries hosting oscillating RGs. We explore KIC 8430105, for which a previous study found significant asteroseismic overestimation of mass and radius when compared with eclipsing binary measurements. We measured dynamical masses and radii for both components to be significantly lower than previously established, increasing the discrepancy between asteroseismic and dynamical measurements. Our dynamical measurements of the RG component were compared to corresponding measurements of mass and radius using asteroseismic scaling relations. Uncorrected scaling relations overestimated the mass of the RG by 26%, the radius by 11%, and the average density by 7%, in agreement with studies for other systems. However, using a theoretical correction to $Delta nu$, we managed to obtain an asteroseismic average density that is $1sigma$ consistent with our dynamical result. We obtained several measurements of $nu_{max}$ that are not fully consistent. With $nu_{max} = 76.78 pm 0.81mu $Hz, the $Delta nu$ correction provided $2 sigma$ consistent mass and radius for the giant. The age of the system was estimated to be $3.7 pm 0.4$ Gyr. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05410v2

A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The regime of President Daniel Ortega has ordered police in Nicaragua to launch an investigation into the Catholic bishop of Matagalpa, who they have detained for allegedly trying to "organize violent groups" to destabilize the government. Bishop Rolando José Álvarez, who was placed under house arrest and threatened with prison, has been openly critical of the abuses and human rights violations being committed by the Sandinista regime. In a press release published Aug. 5, the Nicaraguan national police accused high-ranking leaders of the Catholic Church in Matagalpa, and Álvarez in particular, of “using the communications media and social media” to try to “organize violent groups, inciting them to carry out acts of hatred against the population, creating an atmosphere of anxiety and disorder, disturbing the peace and harmony of the community.” Such actions have the "purpose of destabilizing the State of Nicaragua and attacking the constitutional authorities," the police continue. The Ortega regime's police force announced they have already started an investigation “in order to determine the criminal responsibility of the people involved.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251993/nicaraguan-police-place-catholic-bishop-priests-under-house-arrest A gunman shot at a Denver-area Catholic church, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in separate early morning incidents Saturday and Monday. No one was hurt, but one estimate suggests the gunshots caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Parish staff stressed the need to pray for the perpetrator and emphasized that they are taking the utmost security precautions. Two separate rounds of gunshots hit the parish church in unincorporated Adams County just north of Denver. The Adams County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. The parish church is on the same property as Assumption School, which serves about 130 students in pre-K through eighth grade. The shooting has not affected the school, as the school year has not yet begun. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251996/gunshots-target-denver-area-catholic-church The same day last week that Indiana adopted an abortion ban with limited exceptions, Gov. Eric Holcomb signed into law another measure the state's Catholic conference says has the potential to help families. Known as SB2, the legislation, which received broad bipartisan support, provides for a tax exemption for an adopted child, cuts the state's tax on children's diapers, caps the gas tax, and increases the adoption tax credit, the Indy Star reported. It also creates a $45 million fund for a variety of family-related programs and initiatives, the Criterion, the newspaper of the Indianapolis Archdiocese, reported. The legislation was overshadowed by the sweeping abortion ban Holcomb signed into law the same day, Aug. 5. The law represents the first state abortion ban passed in the US following the June 24 US Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v Wade, giving states the authority to regulate abortion. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251995/indiana-abortion-ban-overshadows-another-pro-family-law Today, the Church celebrates Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as Saint Edith Stein. If there's one aspect of audio hifi that divides the audio world it's cables! If you believe that cables make a difference, are you a hifi wizard, or a cable clown? Are speaker, interconnect, USB, Ethernet and power cables the hidden secret sauce to making a hifi system go to the next level or is it just a load of snake-oil that you rub on to alleviate the sting of how much you've spent? Listen in as two of the Sad Bastards goad each other with their fact based approach (i.e. unsubstantiated ambit claims) and almost come to fisty-cuffs. In fact SB3 had to tie SB2 and SB1 virtually up with the (inferior) kettle-cord that came with his amplifier to keep the show moving along.
Back by popular demand, the 3 Sad Bastards kick off Season 2 with an episode dedicate to headphones. Finally! SB3 is vindicated after years of trying to convince SB2 and SB1 that headphones are awesome. Blending their unique style of education, irritation, and pissing each other off, the 3 Sad Bastards consider whether closed or open headphones are better, do you really need an amplifier for your cans, and revisit whether DACs really do matter, or whether buying randomly is the best option. A must listen for any audiophile interested in headphones!

Colin Christiansen. Nathan Matthews. Lexie Gerson. We keep hearing of more and more coaches in high school and college who are getting hired after coming out as gay or lesbian. For years we have been told that it was super hard for LGBT coaches to be out, yet more of them are finding their way out of the closet and finding their way to new jobs. We talk about whether these examples are just exceptions to the rule, or whether the sports world is opening up more to out coaches. The NFL made two big statements on inclusion in the last week, surprising some. The league released a new ad in the Love Has No Labels campaign that highlighted, among others, two same-sex couples kissing on a Kiss Cam at the Pro Bowl. The league also issued a statement in support of equality ahead of Texas considering a bill that would legalize discrimination in the state. That has driven Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to tell the NFL to mind its own business. Will we see a Super Bowl in Texas anytime soon if SB2 is passed? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Actor Leon Lai is the ambassador of the expo this year. During the opening ceremony, he walked the red carpet briefly and stood next to Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Leung Chun Ying. The glitzy red carpet of the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival soon followed. This year, the opening films were both Hong Kong productions; "Aberdeen" and "The Midnight After". (SB1, movie clip from "Aberdeen") "Aberdeen," a drama about a Hong Kong family, reunites director Pang Ho-Cheung with his favorite leading lady, Miriam Yeung - who worked with him on his hit films "Love in the Puff" and the sequel, "Love in the Buff." Today, our Siqi got the chance to land at a beautiful place called Brown Bluff. There they not only saw the lovely penguins, what's more exciting is that they were very lucky to have a glacier hiking on a beautiful day. Reporter: Landing ashore is always the most exciting part of traveling to Antarctica. There you can get the chance to watch different species of penguins and seals closely and enjoy the wonderful view of the whole island. And today we landed at Brown Bluff, a towering rust-coloured and ice capped, flat topped mountain. Our tour guide Juan Carlos gave us a brief introduction about this beautiful place. (Sb1, Juan) It's a continental landing. And Brown Bluff is also home to A**** and G**** Penguins. (penguins) Do you hear the sound? (am) Yes! They are from the lovely penguins. Now I can say penguins are definitely the cutest animal I've ever seen. At Brown Bluff, there are two kinds of penguins: A**** and G**** Penguins. It's very easy to tell. Will Wagstaff is the penguin expert in the expedition team. (SB2, Will) After observing these penguins for half an hour, I found something interesting. Compared to G**** penguins, A**** penguins seem noisier and they never stop. They always keep walking, jumping or swimming. And they always stay together with their friends or families. So you'll usually see a group of them. And today besides watching the lovely penguins, we were so lucky to get the chance to have glacier hiking, which means a guided walk up a glacier. Walking conditions here were over sections of ice and snow and could be very slippery and difficult in areas. It's much harder than normal hiking. (am Hana) During the walk, many people gave up. But fortunately, I climbed to the top. The view was fantastic above. So not being on the top, you'll never know what a wonderful view you can get. But only if conditions allow can you have the opportunity to go glacier hiking. The tour guide Juan Carlos told us there are many conditions, such as it has to to be accessible, the surface can't be too steep. (Sb3, Juan) So we are really lucky today. But we're not always so lucky. The weather in Antarctica is always changeable, you'll never know what will happen in next minute. For example, yesterday, we landed at a placed called penguin island, but right after a few minutes, we were called back to the ship because strong wind is coming. On our way back, the wind became stronger and stronger, all my clothes, bags and gloves got wet by the sea wave even though they are all water-proof. And the tour guide told us once they encountered exactly the same weather when they landed at penguin island. And they were forced to stay there for over 20 hours waiting to be rescued. So now I truly understand the saying that in Antarctica it's not the clocks or calendars, but the weather to determine you itinerary and timetable. Just like what our expedition leader said, this is Antarctica, you'll never exciting parts of this white continent.
