Interview with Robert "RJ" Thomas retired Navy Seal.Years of Service: 1963-1995This is Episode 100, featuring Navy Seal RJ Thomas, who has been twice nominated for the Medal of Honor and is a recipient of the Navy Cross. On March 23, 1969, United States Navy Seal Robert J “R.J.” Thomas was flying in one of two Seawolf helicopters that were on a scouting mission near Nuy Da Dung Mountain in Vietnam. As the helicopter approached the mountain, they came under heavy weapons fire and were shot down from about 300 feet with no time for the helicopter to autorotate. RJ was hanging out the side door on a gunner belt when several rounds came through the helo, fragmenting and hitting him in the chest. As the helicopter hit the ground, RJ was thrown about 40 feet from the helicopter crash. RJ was stripped of his sidearm, and his Stoner 64A machine gun had been bent, rendering it inoperable. He had compression-fractured vertebrae and multiple impact wounds to his torso, knee, and hand, and his nose was nearly torn from his face. RJ made his way back to the helicopter, which was now on fire. RJ was able to drag the unconscious pilot Dick Barr from his seat and drag him away from the flames. It was around this time that the second helicopter landed and was able to drop door gunner Dan Riordan to assist, and both were able to get gunner Rick Abbott free and away from the helicopter. They were unable to save anyone else as the fire engulfed the helicopter. The enemy began moving toward the survivors to kill or capture them. As RJ observed his surroundings, he realized the only thing he had left to shoot was the pilot's 1911A1 .45 pistol. The pilot had two fully loaded magazines as well as a chest strap with an extra 45-50 rounds. Shielding Barr's body with his own and using Barr's body and helmet as a stable platform, RJ began shooting the oncoming enemy. At some point, Barr regained consciousness and began loading magazines for Thomas as they went empty. One thing in RJ's favor was the fact that in order for the enemy to get to him, they had to come over a dike about 100 yards away. Each time the enemy would stick their heads up over the dike, RJ would shoot them. RJ was able to hold off the enemy for nearly 40 minutes with a handgun. A rescue helicopter was finally able to land, and as RJ gave a final push to load Barr into the helo, his back gave out, and he fell to the ground. It was at this point that an enemy fighter had rushed to the front of the helicopter where there were no weapons. As the fighter raised his rifle to shoot the rescuing helicopter pilots, RJ shot and killed him with his .45. RJ was finally able to make it back into the helicopter and took over the gunner's position and the M60 machine gun. It was in this position that RJ delivered more retribution for his fallen comrades before the helicopter flew to safety. It should be noted that as the rescue chopper came in and landed, its crew noticed many dead enemy soldiers lying on the ground. Their distances from the downed helo were from 3 to about 150 yards, all shot by RJ with his M1911 .45 ACP.For his incredible courage under fire, the Army nominated RJ Thomas twice for the Medal of Honor but both times the nominations were denied. The Navy declined because RJ was an enlisted man and believed the first Medal of Honor should have been awarded to an officer. Thomas was instead awarded the second highest Navy medal, the Navy Cross, after acknowledging that Thomas had only killed one enemy soldier who had charged the helicopter. In addition to the Navy Cross, RJ was also awarded the Bronze Star, Combat V, Purple Heart, and Cross for Gallantry.RJ Thomas retired in 1995 as a Commander. He won numerous firearms matches in the military and as a civilian. He qualified as a Distinguished Marksman with the handgun and rifle and for years was acknowledged as the best shooter in the Navy. Thomas is known for instituting the Naval Special Warfare Sniper program, and the people who worked for him say he was one of the best leaders they ever worked for.

Drawing from biblical teachings, this episode explores the divine mandate for believers to support godly governance, confront corruption in leadership, and seek wisdom for those in authority.Learn the significance of interceding for political leaders based on Romans 13 and the examples of early American founders. Together, we unpack the spiritual responsibility to uphold truth, justice, and faith in leadership, ensuring a brighter future aligned with God's purpose. On October 11, 1798, John Adams wrote to the Massachusetts Militia thatBecause We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition, Revenge or Gallantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. He has been moderator of five different presbyteries and served on the Board of Missions and the Committee on the Ministry in those presbyteries. His philosophy of ministry revolves around trying to be a pastor for every member of his congregation and not just those who agree with him theologically, politically, and socially. “Every congregation that I have served has been made up of people from a variety of religious traditions and people who are politically and socially diverse. We accept absolutely everybody, but that does not mean that we agree with everybody or that we approve of everything they do. Bob Parsons, possibly best-known as the founder of GoDaddy, is widely recognized for his entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts. Currently, Bob is the CEO and founder of YAM Worldwide, which is home to his entrepreneurial ventures in the fields of motorcycles, golf, real estate, finance, marketing, innovation and philanthropy. Bob Parsons is a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. In 2012 Parsons founded YAM Worldwide under which he owns and operates more than a dozen companies, including PXG (Parsons Xtreme Golf), Scottsdale National Golf Club, Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, GO AZ Motorcycles, and YAM Properties. Over the years, three of Parsons entrepreneurial ventures – Parsons Technology (#11, 1992), GoDaddy (#8, 2004) and now PXG (#123, 2019) – have been recognized by Inc Magazine as being among America's fastest growing privately-held companies. Parsons, with his wife and PXG President of Apparel, Renee started The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation in 2012 to reach marginalized populations and causes often underfunded by mainstream philanthropy. The Foundation provides transformational grants to nonprofit organizations successfully working in the areas of homelessness, medical care, LGBTQ youth, education and the needs of wounded veterans and military families. In his new book, FIRE IN THE HOLE!, Bob tells the story of how he went from having absolutely nothing to making more than $3 billion dollars. Joe Daly has served his country and community for 57 years! Born in West Philadelphia, Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps upon high school graduation and was soon on the ground in Vietnam, serving as a machine gunner with Echo Company 2/7. He served two tours in Vietnam, earning a battlefield promotion to Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and a Purple Heart. Upon Honorable Discharge, Joe signed up as a police officer in Lower Marion and has served at every level, working up the ranks to Chief of Police at Lower Marion and subsequently, Springfield, PA. Chief Daly's resume couldn't be more impressive but predictably, he is very humble as he provides credit to the many motivators he served with along the way, especially his family. This conversation was among my favorites to date. Joe's story provides much insight and is very inspiring. Thank you for your service, Joe. Semper Fi!

Hailing from Baltimore and with German roots, Gunther was trying to redeem himself after being demoted due to a letter he wrote discouraging the war. He was honored posthumously with the rank of sergeant, the Divisional Citation for Gallantry in Action, and the Distinguished Service Cross. The script also alludes to the tragic fact that over 11,000 Allied soldiers died between the signing of the armistice and the cessation of hostilities as French Commander in Chief Marshal Foch didn't allow a ceasefire. In this context, the death toll was even higher than that on D-Day during World War II. 00:29 The Final Battle01:27 Gunther's Last Stand03:15 The Tragic End03:46 Posthumous Recognition04:10 Gunther's Life Before the War04:23 The Last Day of the War: A Closer Look04:56 The Unnecessary Losses

If you pitched the story we discuss in this episode as a fictional film script you'd be laughed out of the room … so shocking, so unlikely is this tale of crisis. In 2005 Steve Gallant was convicted of the brutal revenge murder of a man he claimed had attacked his then girlfriend. After being sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum 17-year term, Steve made a vow to never again use violence. He kept that vow for 14 and a half years until, on November 29th 2019, he was allowed out on day release for the first time to attend an educational event at Fishmonger's Hall near London Bridge. On that day Usman Khan, a former prisoner, unleashed terror – killing two young graduates Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones. Steve, along with two others, confronted Khan, who was wearing what turned out to be a fake suicide vest, and chased him out of the building, bizarrely using huge Narwhal tusks and a fire extinguisher. With no concern for their own safety, they took him down before armed police then ended his life. The reaction to Steve's incredible bravery was mixed. For some, including then PM Boris Johnson, he was lauded as a hero. But for others it raised questions about his rehabilitation … about whether his reactions on that day demonstrated a continued willingness to use violence.Steve was eventually awarded the Queen's Medal for Gallantry and granted a Royal Prerogative of Mercy, reducing his minimum term by 10 months. He details his time in prison, essentially a story of change in the face of daily crisis, in his compelling new book The Road To London Bridge. And in this conversation we explore his journey – from a difficult and violent childhood, through the shame of his appalling crime, his determination to change as he navigated his way through the prison system, to that day of truly astounding, instinctive bravery. This is a crisis conversation unlike any we have had. My thanks to Steve for joining us.Steve's Crisis Comforts 1. Perspective – Knowing what you have and understanding there is always someone worse off than you.2. Led to 11 week treatment delay. $1.75 million in Murfreesboro March - He represented Erin Andrews in her case against Marriott regarding the peephole incident. $55,000,000. Nashville. October - Vanderbilt lost a biopsy sample. Plaintiff doesn't (and can't know) if she has cancer. $2,000,000 in Nashville. It was all emotional distress. If I needed a lawyer in a personal injury case in Tennessee, Kinnard (pictured) would be on my short list. He's like Tyler Thompson. Only from a little further down south." Prior to pursuing law school, Mr. Kinnard attended West Point. He served in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, which equipped him for success in his legal practice. He was awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Purple Heart, Bronze Star for Valor, and Air Medal for his two tours in Vietnam.  Community InvolvementIn addition to his dedicated support of his clients, Randall Kinnard is also driven to give back to his community. Mr. Kinnard serves as a volunteer for Alive Hospice, residing on the Quality Council for the organization. In addition, he is a board member of Centerstone, a non-profit organization that helps more than 40,000 individuals with mental illnesses. Mr. Kinnard is on the Board of Directors of Friends of Warner Parks and supports The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. While serving as Chair of Fundraising for Legal Aid, he helped raise $700,000, setting a record for the organization! Mr. Kinnard has also been a board member of his church and a dedicated Sunday school teacher. He is honored to support dozens of local and national charitable organizations. Currently, Mr. Kinnard is in the process of founding The Children's Justice Center, which is a non-profit organization designed to provide free legal help, advice, and court representation for children who have been abused and neglected. Mr. Kinnard enjoys spending his free time in the outdoors. He loves running, fishing, golf, and hiking. He also enjoys reading a good book, especially on the topic of history.

Terry McIntosh completed Airborne Parachute School in 1967 at age 17 and was assigned to Co. D, 17th Infantry Long Range Patrol in Germany. The LRRP unit was an elite airborne light infantry force capable of conducting Direct Action Operations. The "Lurps" operated on reconnaissance and combat patrols to obtain vital intelligence or perform highly dangerous covert missions into enemy held territory, and remained on high alert throughout the Cold War.McIntosh was skilled in automatic weapons, radio communications, and special operations.Due to heavy US casualties at the height of the Vietnam War, McIntosh re-enlisted for an additional year and volunteered for a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group (ABN) in 1968. He served 6 months on A-Team 414 in the Mekong Delta 1969 as one of the youngest men in military history to wear the Green Beret and serve on a Special Forces A-Team. He commanded or participated in 22 combat missions to include Search & Destroy, Ambush, Airboat, and Aerial Assault Missions. He served with Col. Robert Rheault's espionage team at the time of the execution of a double agent (Thai Khac Chuyen) which sparked Daniel Ellsberg's compilation and eventual release of the Pentagon Papers. See also “Project Gamma.”  His tour of duty included a short term assignment to Nui Coto, a fortified Viet Cong stronghold in the 7 Mountains area at end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. McIntosh became ill and was medivac to 29th Evac hospital in Can Tho. He was diagnosed with "Fever of Unknown Origin" and returned to duty at A-414 upon recovery.Awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Army Commendation Medal, VSM w/4 Bronze Service Stars, Civil Actions Medal, Expert Badge (Rifle), United States, Vietnamese, and German Parachute Wings, and other awards. McIntosh finished his military service with the 75th Rangers, and was Honorably Discharged in 1971. He attained the rank of Sergeant E-5.Unofficial Mark of Distinctive Service:McIntosh is one of the youngest men, if not the actual youngest, to ever wear the Green Beret into combat and serve on an A-Team. Military Records verify that he was assigned to Special Forces at age 18 and at the height of the Vietnam War because of his military skills. The median age of Special Forces soldiers was about 30 to 35 years old. The Group had suffered high causality rate Tet68, and temporarily dropped the age requirement to 18 in order to fill much needed positions. In spite of the age drop, SF only recruited those qualified in a critical Military Occupational Skill. The assignment demanded skill, determination, and ability in keeping with SF standards. McIntosh was accepted by his team members without question. They were all getting shot at regardless of age, and it was during a time when a soldier was judged by his actions more than anything else.McIntosh earned his Combat Infantryman Badge at age 19 during a Search & Destroy mission in the Mekong Delta. Lt. Col. Wesley Herrlein was OIC with air support, and ten enemy soldiers were killed in action. A citation of combat was submitted, and orders for the award were cut Feb 23, 1969. McIntosh was assigned assigned to Det. A-414 in Thanh Tri, a rifle shot from the Cambodian border. He spent 170 days on the A-Team. Please like and subscribe to our YouTube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@thescuttlebuttpodcastAlso you can support us at our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/TheScuttlebuttPodcastSaving lives 1 episode at a timeAnother way to support us is by the following links linktr.ee/thescuttlebuttpodcast#Veterans #Army #Navy #AirForce #Marines #CoastGuard #22aday #pilots #aviation #suicideawareness #22 #22veteransSupport the show

Transcript:Hello, this is Pastor Don Willeman of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective. The Framers of our constitution knew that they were proposing something quite unique in the history of the world. They were proposing a free Republic, where people would not be ruled by the whims of a king or the dictates of a pope, but by the will of the people. It was to be as Abraham Lincoln would later say a “government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. Today, we take such notions for granted and are quite intoxicated with our “right to freedom”. We pride ourselves at being able to sniff out threats to that freedom from ten miles away. However, the Framers were not so giddy about how easy or stable such a government ruled by the people would be. They were just as suspicious of the tyranny of the people, as they were about the tyranny of any prince.1 Because they knew history and their Bibles, they were quite aware that a system of self-government required the people to be able to govern themselves. This meant that the people must willingly restrain their baser instincts by voluntarily submitting themselves to the rule of a moral law outside themselves. Though many of them were not personally Christian, they largely saw this voluntary restraining instinct to be the function of voluntary religious practice, particularly Christian practice. Listen to John Adams:“We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled from…morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition…Revenge or Gallantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” ~John Adams to the Massachusetts Militia on October 11, 1798 (sic)Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective”.“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech, who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways. So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words, who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God; for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life. So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.”~ Proverbs 2:1-22 (ESV)References: 1.
