Cobra Kai is an American martial arts comedy drama television series created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, and distributed by Sony Pictures Television. It serves as a sequel to the original The Karate Kid films created by Robert Mark Kamen.[1] The series premiered on May 2, 2018, and concluded on February 13, 2025, after six seasons consisting of 65 episodes. The series stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprising their respective roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the film series, alongside Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Peyton List, Vanessa Rubio, and Dallas Dupree Young. Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith also reprise their roles from the films as part of the main cast, with many others returning in guest or recurring roles.Cobra Kai re-examines The Karate Kid films as Johnny's "redemption story,"[2] beginning with his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel.[3] The series attained high viewership on both YouTube and Netflix, and received critical acclaim for its writing, performances, action sequences, humor, character development, and faithfulness to the films. It received numerous awards and nominations, with the third season being nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.Thirty-four years after being defeated by Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 All-Valley Karate Tournament at the end of The Karate Kid (1984), Johnny Lawrence suffers from alcoholism and depression. He works as a part-time handyman and lives in an apartment in Reseda, Los Angeles, having fallen far from his wealthy lifestyle in Encino. He has an estranged son named Robby, from a previous relationship, whom he has abandoned. In contrast, Daniel is now the owner of a successful car dealership and is married to co-owner Amanda with whom he has two children: Sam and Anthony. However, Daniel often struggles to meaningfully connect with his children especially after his friend and mentor Mr. Miyagi passed away prior to the series' beginning. After using karate to defend his teenage neighbor Miguel Diaz from a group of bullies, Johnny agrees to teach Miguel the way of the fist and re-opens Cobra Kai. The revived dojo attracts a group of bullied social outcasts who find camaraderie and self-confidence under Johnny's tutelage. The reopening of Cobra Kai reignites Johnny's rivalry with Daniel, who responds by opening the Miyagi-do dojo, whose students include Sam and Robby, leading to a rivalry between the respective dojos.Pre

Prepare for an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride! Join the Born to Watch team as we revisit the heart-pounding action and relentless determination o of the 2008 hit film, Taken. Get ready to be on the edge of your seat all over again.Released in 2008, Taken is a pulse-pounding action thriller that showcases the talents of Liam Neeson in one of his most iconic roles. Directed by Pierre Morel and written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, the film catapulted Neeson into the action genre spotlight and became a box office success. Known for its intense action sequences, gripping storyline, and Neeson's commanding presence, Taken has since become a modern classic in the genre. In this review, we will delve into the film's strengths, weaknesses, and overall impact.Taken introduces us to Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), a retired CIA operative whose life takes a dramatic turn when his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), is kidnapped by a sex trafficking ring while on vacation in Paris. The plot unfolds with relentless momentum as Bryan races against time to rescue his daughter before she disappears forever. The film stands out for its tightly woven narrative, delivering a simple yet effective premise that keeps the audience engaged throughout. Bryan's transformation from a loving father to a relentless avenger is expertly portrayed, making him a highly relatable and sympathetic character. The film's exploration of the dark underbelly of human trafficking serves as a sobering reminder of the real-world issue it tackles.Liam Neeson's portrayal of Bryan Mills is nothing short of phenomenal. His on-screen presence is magnetic, as he effortlessly embodies the role of a seasoned, yet vulnerable, father on a mission. Neeson's deep voice, stoic demeanor, and unwavering determination lend an air of authenticity to the character, making his actions and the stakes feel real.Neeson's performance is emotionally charged, effectively conveying Bryan's desperation and determination to save his daughter. His delivery of the iconic phone call monologue, in which he threatens the kidnappers, has become one of the most memorable moments in action movie history. Neeson's physicality and intense fight sequences further highlight his versatility as an action star.Taken excels in delivering adrenaline-fueled action sequences that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Director Pierre Morel masterfully crafts intense and gritty scenes, incorporating a frenetic pace that perfectly matches the urgency of Bryan's mission. The hand-to-hand combat, chase scenes, and shootouts are expertly choreographed, displaying a raw and visceral energy. The film's editing deserves praise for its seamless transitions and well-timed cuts, heightening the tension and intensifying the impact of each action sequence. The cinematography captures the dark and gritty atmosphere of Paris, showcasing both the beauty and the danger lurking beneath the surface.Taken benefits from a solid supporting cast that enhances the film's overall quality. Famke Janssen delivers a heartfelt performance as Lenore, Bryan's ex-wife and Kim's mother. Although her screen time is limited, her character provides emotional depth to Bryan's motivations. The antagonists, led by Olivier Rabourdin's Detective Franck Dotzler, are suitably menacing, portraying the cold and ruthless nature of the sex trafficking ring. The film doesn't delve deeply into their motivations, but they serve their purpose as formidable adversaries for Bryan.Taken remains a standout action thriller that has left an indelible mark on the genre. The film's compelling storyline, Liam Neeson's commanding performance, and high-octane action sequences come together to create an enthralling piece of cinema that will stand the test of time. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Wax on. Wax off. Directed by John G. Avildsen and written by Robert Mark Kamen, The Karate Kid is the martial arts drama film starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. It is the first installment in the Karate Kid franchise. Luke and Jae go back to 1984 to relive their Cobra Kai days. Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), is a teenager who is taught karate by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to help defend himself and compete in a tournament against his bullies - one of whom is Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the ex-boyfriend of his love interest Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue).
Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, who are basically their own French/American buddy cop film and trade jabs at each other as often as they collaborate on scripts, wrote Taken as part of a bread-and-butter of lower budget action films meant to prop up Besson's production company. Its success was just as surprising to Liam Neeson, who took the part primarily to take a vacation in France and have fun with the stunt guys, and thought his iconic speech was corny. Liam would later menace Maggie Grace's ex-boyfriend in-character with a version of the speech. There was also a guy who claimed to have inspired the part, who was later arrested by the FBI. Besson started writing the story that was developed as The Fifth Element when he was 16 years old; he was 38 when the film opened in cinemas. Besson wanted to shoot the film in France, but suitable facilities could not be found; filming took place in London and Mauritania instead. He hired comic artists Jean "Moebius" Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières, whose books inspired parts of the film, for production design. Costume design was by Jean-Paul Gaultier. The Fifth Element received mainly positive reviews, although some critics were highly negative. The film won in categories at the British Academy Film Awards, the César Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Lumières Awards, but also received nominations at the Golden Raspberry and Stinkers Bad Movie Awards. The Fifth Element was a strong financial success, earning more than US$263 million at the box office on a $90 million budget. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive European film ever made, and it remained the highest-grossing French film at the international box office until the release of The Intouchables in 2011.

When rewatching a sci-fi movie from decades ago, it's often hilarious how the future and technology is assumed to evolve. 1997's "The Fifth Element" seems to intentionally lean into that hard, as the technology appears to have been developed by someone from the early 80's interpretation of what the future might be.

This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan wonder why kids are scared of the stupidest boogeymen. The Leprechaun haunted Ryan for his entire childhood, waiting in dark corners, making it unable for him to pee in the middle of the night. If only he had watched the movie when he was seven years old, and seen how stupid, unscary, unwitty, and half-assed this boring, lazy movie is, he wouldn't have wasted another second being scared. Welcome to the first episode of Parallel Fiction. Jeff and Heather review stories of New Beginnings to commemorate the start of Parallel Fiction. Heather will be talking about fantasy novel The Starless Sea, while Jeff will wax on/wax off the 80's classic The Karate Kid. They break down the story and theme of these stories and give recommendations of what else you may enjoy. Written by Erin Morgenstern, the Starless Sea covers the possibility of endless stories and countless new beginnings. Following the character of Zachary, the "rabbit hole" is a sea of honey that carries the characters through a fantasy where anything can happen. Morgenstern's debut novel Night Circus is also available wherever books are sold. Heather relates the telling of these stories and the notion that nothing is ever lost as long as you keep it in your heart to that of losing a loved one, and holding on to innocence you may outgrow with age. Fun Fact: Erin Morgenstern is also a painter specializing in acrylic! Director by John Avildsen, the standard bearer of old school big fight movies such as Rocky, lends his expertise to Robert Mark Kamen's (Co-creator of the Taken franshise) original screenplay. Jeff takes us through the events that lead spunky New Jersey teen Daniel LaRusso from punching bag to Karate champion. The Karate Kid shows us that new beginnings can be tough, and that the help of friends and family can go a long way to make anywhere feel like home. Overcoming adversary and counting on others bring this story to life. Jeff points out how powerful the montage segments & unexpected break out performance from Pat Morita make this movie a timeless classic. Did you know? The iconic Karate Kid headband was improvised by Morita, who had the handkerchief in his pocket the day of filming. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how The Karate Kid and The Starless Sea compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. So, one of the hottest movies at the box office at the moment is the latest in the Star Wars series, we felt this movie deserved a special episode to discuss what is happening. We asked Luke from Sons of Obiwan Lightsaber Academy to join us as he is one of the biggest Star Wars Nerds we know. So will say right at the outset that there will be spoilers in this if you haven’t seen the movie yet, but if you have taken this long to go see it then get out there and watch it. Now this might be a little different from other movie reviews/ discussions out there as we look at the evolution of different aspects of the series and also the arts of fighting in movies and special effects etc. Now we will advise that Buck and Luke are both super Nerds of the Star Wars universe and grew up watching these movies, read books (although Luke has read more than Buck, yep, someone has out read Buck on a topic) and just lived the life of a fan for decades. We discuss the highs and lows of this movie, what made us stop and wonder what the heck is happening. We also at the impact of other movies and stories have had on Star Wars. We discuss the language of fighting styles and the confused start to the final evolution of the current form of dance and prose employed in the Rise of Skywalker. Want to know what this means then listen in and try to keep up with the discussion. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, William Thrasher, and BJ discuss The Karate Kid Part 2. Mr. Miyagi (Pat Norita) takes Daniel (Ralph Macchio) to his hometown of Okinawa in Japan. They find plenty of trouble. Grander in scope than the first film, The Karate Kid Part 2 is often too complicated for its own good. Robert Mark Kamen's script deepens Miyagi by revealing more of his past, but the movie takes its damn time to get to the karate action kids crave. Peter Cetera's vocal love theme Glory of Love was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1987 Academy Awards. Writer: Tom King Artist: Mitch Gerads Publisher: Vertigo One of the most poignant retellings of the Iraq War, Tom King's critically acclaimed series SHERIFF OF BABYLON begins here, in Baghdad, 2003. The reign of Saddam Hussein is over. The Americans are in command, and no one is in control. Former cop turned military contractor Christopher Henry knows that better than anyone. He's in the country to train up a new Iraqi police force, and one of his recruits has just been murdered. With civil authority in tatters and dead bodies clogging the streets, Chris is the only person in the Green Zone with any interest in finding out who killed him—and why. Chris's inquiry brings him first to Sofia, an American-raised Iraqi who now sits on the governing council, and then to Nassir, a grizzled veteran of Saddam's police force—and probably the last real investigator left in Baghdad. United by death but divided by conflicting loyalties, the three must help each other navigate the treacherous landscape of post-invasion Iraq in order to hunt down the killers. Aspiring filmmakers should definitely tune into this episode of the Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast, as I talk to two up-and-coming, talented, London-based directors Matthias Hoene and James Nunn, who are both making waves internationally with their own action films. Firstly, I talk to the director Matthias Hoene about his new film, Enter the Warrior's Gate (aka Warrior's Gate), a Chinese-European co-production written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. The time-traveling wuxia fantasy stars Dave Bautista, Uriah Shelton, and the Chinese actors Ni Ni, Mark Chao, Francis Ng and Kara Hui. If you are reading this in the States, you can watch the film right now exclusively on DirecTV. My second guest is James Nunn, who has become a highly sought-after director after being launched onto the UK indie scene with his first directorial effort, the acclaimed thriller Tower Block (2012), co-directed with Ronnie Thompson. He has since collaborated with top UK fighting star Scott Adkins on two films: Green Street 3: Never Back Down (2013), and Eliminators (2016), which was James' first film under contract with WWE Studios. His most recent movie, The Marine 5: Battleground (2017), featured a number of WWE wrestlers and is available to watch right now on digital and Blu-ray. We discuss his earliest film memories, working with Scott Adkins, how to make a convincing action movie in London, and the impact piracy is having on the film industry.
