The man...the legend...the icon...Cyrus, is back! He dives back into the Fu for Thought foray to discuss Lau Kar Leung's comedic classic, DIRTY HO. I've avoided showing this one to Devan for years because I thought the "shenanigans" would annoy her. Well, she's finally seen it. Did she love it? Hate it? On this episode, we dicuss the concept of "covert fights," we wonder "What are the 7 Agonies all about?" and Devan expresses her dislike for the "killer cowbell." Later, we answer listener questions. Including whether we'd fight our parents in their prime and if Gordon Liu is an underrated actor. Enjoy!

Regisseur Johnnie To liefert ein melodramatisches Remake zu Chang Chehs "Disciples of Shaolin" (1975) ab. We're back after a brief hiatus with another geographically centered mini-series, this time focused on the movies of Hong Kong! And to kick it off, Nick is finally making good on his longstanding threat to talk Shaw Bros: it's Lau Kar-Leung's THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978)!36th Chamber is an enormous tentpole in kung fu film, and one of the first post-Bruce Lee HK movies to break through to international audiences. We're probing into what made it so influential, how it established training tropes, and we opine on why it's a perfect introduction to the genre. We're also talking about Lau Kar-Leung's approach to martial arts as a self-improvement tool, Gordon Liu and Shaw Bros' outsized impact outside of the kung fu world, and the Kill Bill siren. And yes, we mention Bruce Lee.But who are the Shaw Bros exactly? Nick's here with a quick rundown of their history and how there's literally a place called Movietown. We also determine what chambers would absolutely wreck us personally.Next time: we're agreeing with Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in Corey Yuen's YES MADAM (1985)!

The Martial Arts Mania Podcast

New episode alert! This week, Gavin and I are tackling one of the greatest Kung Fu movies of all time. YES, we have said this before, but this is truly one of the masterpieces of old school Kung Fu Cinema- ‘Martial Club' (1981). Directed by Kung Fu visionary Lau Kar Leung, and starring the iconic Gordon Liu as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung, this master class in martial arts filmmaking has all the elements of an all-time classic, and it doesn't disappoint! With an emphasis on 武德 or “martial arts ethics”, this picture showcases not only the physical aspects of Chinese martial arts, but also the honor and morals that go along with it. You've got North vs. South, kicks vs. fists, righteous vs. dishonest-this along with ferocious fight scenes from start to finish, and an opening lion dance sequence that has to be seen to be believed, and ‘Martial Club' delivers one heck of a ride! To add to all of that, you've got some of the most technical Kung Fu choreography ever displayed on screen, which is why it's easy to see why ‘Martial Club' might just be the pinnacle of Kung Fu cinema! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!

Formed way back in the days of silent film, two of the four Shaw brothers (Run Run and Runme to be precise) turned an unspectacular business concern into the greatest of all Asian action film companies!   Rivaled only much later (and to a far lesser degree) by Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest, Shaw productions were known for their revolving casts, stunning sets and costumerie and over the top mixtures of myth, fantasy and horror with some fairly grounded martial arts technique, with both barehanded and exotic weapons fighting coming into play! From core directors like horror experts Ho Meng Hua, Chih-Hung Kuei and the gothic-leaning swordplay of Chor Yuen, we'll proceed to the true masters of the genre, graceful fight coordinator cum director Lau Kar-Leung and the incomparable father of heroic bloodshed, Chang Cheh! Join us as we talk everything from Wang Yu and David Chiang to Ti Lung and the Venoms, only here on Weird Scenes! Week 26 Flying Fists and Shining Swords - speaking of Shaw Bros.
